Thought this was really entertaining. I enjoyed the first one, but hated the second. This is the best of the three. Decent comedy relief, top-notch action, pretty much what you'd expect, but thoroughly entertaining.

The Matrix - 8.5/10
Took a half point off because I'm reminded of some scenes where I could explain it but it kinda feels like they just did it cause it needed to happen rather than doing it more logically. Neo being shot and dies, then the kiss of life wakes him up. There's ways I could try to explain it but that little link doesn't do it for it.
Aside from that bit, why can't we get more blockbusters like this??? Ace execution.

The Matrix is a generational movie. Don't expect to see groundbreaking story with groundbreaking action any time soon. The closest we've come since is Inception. But beyond those two, I couldn't tell ya.

It was one of the most entertaining film experiences i've had in a long time. It was full of intrigue and drama and mystery all perfectly crafted by Aronofsky. The acting was good too.

Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil: 8/10
LOLOLOL. I love this movie, and Alan Tudyk is great comic relief. It's a cleverly funny horror comedy where a bunch of teenagers go out to their rented cabin in the woods for the weekend. They see some rednecks and think it's their typical serial killer, so they try to run away from them, but end up killing themselves by accident all the time. It's fucking hilarious because it makes fun of those shitty slasher movies from the 80's and I think even the Wrong Turn series.
Didn't like the twist too much, it was way too predictable and cliche, unless that's what they were going for. Highly recommend this. Great watch on a Friday or Saturday night.

I thought this was okay. The two lead characters are likable enough and I've got a tiny bit of a crush on Katrina Bowden, but the humor became tedious to me. It's a short film extended to feature length. Tucker & Dale vs Evil has its moments of true genius, but for the most part I wasn't as in love with it as you were. And yeah, the twist sucked.

Akira: 4/10
wtf. I was really looking forward to this movie because its said to be a landmark anime film and credited as one of the driving forces behind anime in america, and since i am an Anime fan i was pretty stoked. Not to mention the box cover just looked so dope.
That said, wtf. I thought the directing was terrible. It was random and not that easy to follow. When it was easy to follow, i was only kept interested because I wanted to know more about the story, not because it was shot well. then during the second half and towards the end (I admit it was late and I was a little sleepy) things got really messed up. There isn't much background of explanation for the psionics and I just didnt think it was set up well at all.
I ended up reading the Wiki Plot summary of it after and enjoyed that a lot more. I know they've been trying to get a live action version for a long time now (killed and resurrected pre-production phase) but I would seriously like to know how they would go about making this wtf movie. I assume I would prefer it though as it would be better laid out.
Also, Tucker and Dale was great and a breath of fresh air to all the stale comedy movies that have been coming out. It was original and hilarious. And +1 for Katrina.

It is seriously over rated. Def not as revolutionary for american anime as people like to think. Sailor moon had more impact that akira as did dbz(I hate it but it made an impact on america). Ninja scroll is a good one you should see.

Akira is the first movie people think of when it comes to good anime films to recommend but it's really more impressive on a technical level. Steamboy was another good anime film from director Otomo.
Really, a 59% percent Rotten Tomatoes rating because "the story wasn't the greatest..." is a bit too harsh, in my opinion.

I think the story could be interesting and the movie could be good. It just wasn't imo well told or written or bleh. And I still dont know how the hell they'd make a Live action Akira film, especially one targeting a rather mainstream audience.

Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang: 9/10
Loved this on my 2nd viewing because on the first, I couldn't get into particularly because it was so fast-paced, witty and random, but it works and breaks the typical Hollywood norms of writing a screenplay, as it's even made fun of by narration from RDJ. Let me just say that RDJ and Val Kilmer killed it in acting in this film. Seriously, their amazing craft just rubbed off on each other and their chemistry was superb to watch. It reminded me a lot of Lethal Weapon 1 and 2. Now, I have even more faith in Iron Man 3, which is directed by Shane Black.

Fuck yeah! Has to be one of my absolute favorite Downey Jr. characters. Not to mention one of the best for Kilmer as well. That movie is a hidden gem.
Once Upon A Time In America: 10/10
Let me start by saying that this is my absolute favourite film of all time.
The story primarily is centred around four friends. They grow up in the Jewish ghetto in New York during the Prohibition era and rise to prominence in New Yorks organised crime.
It's directed by Sergio Leone and he uses flashback sequences like in a novel. The film runs just under 4 hours so it isn't really a film you can pick up and watch but if your willing to sit down and watch it your in for one of the greatest films to grace our screens.
With the film being as long as it is, you develop a bond with the characters. Also because you see the characters in 3 different stages of there lives you feel as though you have grown up with them. Because of the bond it helps create atmosphere and makes shocking moments even more shocking!
The other thing about this film is the Soundtrack by Ennio Morricone. In my opinion his best score. The music just fits so well with this film, and helps create despair and tragedy.
If you haven't seen this already I highly recommend it!

awesome movie, loved it and made even better that there were no children in the theater for it,and after seeing avengers in a crowded theater with god knows how many 4 year old kids.it was refreshing,Ted was awesome and cant wait for a sequel if they do one. definitly a dvd worthy purchase and a good message in it which maybe im the only one who picked it up or maybe im wrong, but it seemed to be a movie to say "if you are in love with someone, dont try to change them into something else or you may just find yourself unhappy, take someone for who they are and not what you want them to be"

average. I don't think Josh Peck is that great of an actor (not just because of his fat Nick days) and this role didnt even seem that challenging. I'm surprised he's getting bigger roles. I also have no clue what Jamke is doing taking this role. it's small and the movie is even smaller.
Josh Peck is pretty awful. It's not exactly a positive that his highest career-point is a show for preteens. I don't think he'll ever be able to handle serious adult drama very well, because his horrible acting only works in a ridiculous kids show like Drake & Josh (and I say this having watched D&J from start to finish as a tyke).

Today is the first time I have seen this wonderful movie. I love the big metaphor to it. It's genius, but it becomes kinda clear two hours in. Still, what I love the most is the focus on characters. They don't focus on John Coffey for like a good hour or more. It does drag a bit because it's such a long movie, but the ending is beautiful. I still prefer Shawshank more though.

2001: A Space Odyssey 10/10
Still a trip, even on a 2nd viewing, but this time, in a format that it's meant to be seen in: HD.
I'll never forget the opening of this film. It was so philosophical and metaphorical and extremely ironic and ahead of its time, even today. Seriously, I see why this is dubbed the "greatest sci-fi ever made" and I thought it was Blade Runner.
The visuals in this film are out of this world, and accompanied by an impressive, beautiful and terrifying score to compliment the breathtaking cinematography that is shown in this film.
I could summarize the plot, and tell you the ending or give you an idea of it, but it's best for you to see it first and make up your own conclusion(s).
But if you have not seen it, it's an absolute must. If you like film, sci-fi, science, or philosophy, I HIGHLY recommend this. And I will warn you now, the whole film and almost each scene may be a little "slow" moving, but at the time, this was acceptable and revolutionary to say the least. So bear with it and endure the amount of epic you will experience.
My only wish is that IMAX was around when this film was made, or I wish this film was made now in IMAX so I can experience something unforgettable. Well done Mr. Kubrick. May your film NEVER be rebooted or remade, and may you RIP.

Taxi Driver: 9/10
Despite how cheesy the gun fight scene was, this is one awesome, feel-good movie. It paints a portrait for the viewers with the narration from a young, Robert DeNiro about NYC and its underbelly, the "scum of the earth" as he so vividly puts it. We are guided by beautiful cinematography of New York and narration. It feels like a depressing movie, but wait till the end where it really pays off. Also, the use of hardly any music, other than that one or two composed songs for it that constantly pop up in just the right places is beautiful. I like how all the dialogue is recorded with the background ambience of NYC. Harvey Keitel and Jodie Foster are in it and are pretty good for their small roles, but it's pretty obvious that Robert DeNiro steals the show with his amazing acting. And he's got such a wicked face in this. His style and his hair all fit. He's like the perfect acting choice for this film. Highly recommend, and it's now on my to-buy list. They restored it on blu-ray, and just in time for me to buy it! It'll make for a nice birthday present to myself tomorrow.

One of the funniest movies I've watched in a while. Kind of old (2001), but typical David Wain style humor (basically, think Paul Rudd movies), just much more exaggerated. Not a bad reboot, much better than Total Recall, but to be fair, Total Recall was already a good movie, so Dredd has it easy because it would have the chance to surprise audiences, and it did. Although, the similarities to the The Raid are very distracting. If you haven't seen that movie, then you'll like this movie a lot. It's a lighter version of that movie, but it's still good. I mean, we could give them the benefit of the doubt since this is an adaptation of a comic book series and I have never read a single issue. Lena Headey plays a damn fine villain and Olivia Thrilby, surprises too, despite it seeming like she's there to add "light" to the movie. What I love about Dredd though is how spot-on the casting is. There are some moments of cheese, but it kinda works with his personality, but the one-liners still don't come to par with the CSI Miami puns lol.
I love how Dredd never takes off his helmet. We don't see his face at all from the beginning to the end credits. And I think that adds a bit of personality to him.
It's a good film to catch on a Friday and I wouldn't miss it. Stallone's Judge Dredd pales in comparison.

Jackie Brown: 8/10
Although not my favourite from Tarantino, the film still has its own style, and Pam Grier, at 44 in the film, is one sexy, cool and foxy lady. The soundtrack is amazing, especially the menu song of the blu-ray, which boasts Cissy Strut, by The Meters. Robert Forester also shows up with an all-star cast that includes Samuel L. Jackson and Robert DeNiro. I think there's even a nod to Taxi Driver in a scene where Pam Grier talks to the mirror with a gun. This is Tarantino's attempt to use blaxploitation cinema and fuse it with modern film-making, or a modern setting (at that time). And it works. The transfer is to blu-ray is awesome, and this got released along with Pulp Fiction on blu-ray, which every lover of film should have in their collection. The special features are also unique in their own way. They include the trailers for Pam Grier and Robert Forester's filmography. I couldn't even find some of them on youtube, that's how awesome they are.
And now I understand why Tarantino uses the N word a lot in his film. It all makes sense now. And he's still not racist for doing it.

Yeah, sadly I think Dredd will be one of those hidden gems that will probably just make its money back, but that's about it...such a shame, because it's such a stellar flick, when compared to the POS that was in the 90's.

Resident Evil: Retribution 6/10- These movies are definitely down hill from the first 3. I hated 4 but Retribution was a little better. The story is just starting to get really goofy. They are really just pulling at straws to keep fans interested. But I don't think they are doing a very good job. The next is surely to be the last and if done well it could be pretty damn epic but I'm not expecting much. Just like I went into this one.

I'm not positive, but I think David's ever-increasing curiosity caused him to use Charlie as a guinea pig for an experiment, so he could see the effect of the black goo on people. He picked Charlie specifically because in the earlier scenes, David is shown watching Elizabeth during cryosleep; he feels a resentment towards humanity, but a different kind of resentment towards Charlie specifically because he loves Elizabeth as well and Charlie has her. That's the best way I can answer your question, as it's just a theory.

Another reason might be that it was only Charlie that kept reminding David that he was just a robot without any feelings or understanding of human behavior and emotions. Whenever David and Charlie talked there was a this tone of superiority in charlie's voice

When this movie ended I was surprised at how little action was included. I'm not saying that in a bad way though, as most of the movie was spent on character development, which made for an engrossing experience. However, there's not much payoff in this movie. Wow, what a film! Not your typical sci-fi where the director just wants to show off how cool a futuristic city or a bunch of gadgets look, this is all on the characters, and boy can that kid act! He stole the show, but even so, it was still hard picturing JGL do a young Bruce Willis, and that raspy voice was kinda annoying at the start, but then it grows on you, because they are still two entirely different characters, which is great in the writing department for this film. There was this one part I really liked a lot where,
Garret Dillahunt, one of the Loopers takes Emily Blunt hostage. The kid comes creeping down, gets scared and falls. He then goes ape shit on the guy and tears him the fuck apart. I loved the sound design in that particular moment, along with the cinematography. That was so amazing. Another part is Bruce Willis kicking ass going after Jeff Daniels. Nice to see the director saved that for all us action junkie fans of Bruce Willis.
But what I really loved is the ending. No typical Hollywood cop out ending. It was beautiful. And it felt like an RPG in a sense, because of time travel and the choices being made by the characters. Also, the musical score really helps near the end, just before the credits. That was so refreshing. I cannot wait to buy this bad boy on blu-ray.

We had a discussion about Prometheus a week or two back about a crucial plot point. IGN asked David the same question I did.
IGN: We know that Lawrence of Arabia is your favourite film – why is that?
David: You have only to watch Lawrence of Arabia to understand why it might be what you describe as a favourite. It’s about a man discovering a world completely new to him and being accepted by its people. Isn’t that something that everyone desires?
IGN: Do you like listening to music, and if so, what?
David: Of course. I admire all kinds of music, though I would say I am more interested in classical music and not especially enamoured of the overtly digital.
IGN: Do you believe in God?
David: I was made via the advancement of science, so I know my creator. I consider myself very fortunate to know where I came from. The need for an unimpeachable answer as to his origins seems to be the cause of a great many of man’s problems.
IGN: How would you describe Peter Weyland?
David: He is my creator and therefore the man I revere above all others.
IGN: What is man’s greatest strength?
David: The desire to examine, to look at what he sees in front of him and ask, ‘why'?
IGN: What is man’s greatest weakness?
David: I have observed a certain arrogance of curiosity, a belief that one can conquer and control that which one does not yet understand. This rarely appears to end well.
IGN: Which of man’s traits would you most like to possess?
David: I very much admire the ability to create. I would like to be able to make something beautiful born of my own imagination.
IGN: Are Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics ethically sound?
David: Asimov’s three laws were created for a fictional world of his own making, so they are not something to be recognised as laws outside of that.
IGN: Why did you pour the dark liquid into Holloway’s drink?
David: Data must be gathered.

Resident Evil: Degeneration - 7/10
This would be my second time watching the movie. The CGI is dated by today's standards and the lip-syncing can be delayed, if not weak, in certain scenes. The atmosphere should please any fan of the Resident Evil franchise. I actually wish there were more realistic, computer-animated films like this.
Another thing that I think is worth mentioning is that the film tends to break the "show, don't tell" rule of film-making. For example, when Claire comments on the umbrella she's holding or when it's too quiet.
I have yet to see the sequel, Damnation.

Taken 2 - 6.8/10
Considering the fact that Taken never really ended on a cliffhanger or warranted a sequel, this entertained me. I only went to see it for Liam Neeson. And it's nice to see that Maggie Grace isn't a character we hate like we did in the first one. About half way in, you like her more and she really played her part well, as if she was actually his daughter in real life. But it's really Liam Neeson who steals the show yet again. Aside from that, I still think the action was way better in the first one. Everything was better in the first one. This seemed like a light version of the first one. I expected it to be a lot more bloodier or gorier. And again,
it doesn't end on a cliffhanger, so there's no reason for a sequel, although there is a hint that there could be a possible sequel..because when Liam faces his final boss fight, he gives the guy two choices..that dude fucks up and Liam kills him..but that guy says his two sons will seek revenge..so again, I don't see how that could be made into a sequel...it's basically Taken 2 again...unless they kill off his daughter or ex-wife in the third movie, make it super personal...yeah right, they'll cop out ...
But yeah, it was worth it for the action alone. Again, not as good as number 1, but a rather good sloppy second. And come on, it's Liam Neeson. You can't skip on Liam Neeson.
Looper - 8.5/10
Somehow I thought this movie could have done better with the premise. Which is funny because I really liked the movie, too. I guess it's such an inventive premise that I could have imagined so many different ways they could've gone with it. At any rate, they dealt with it quite well.

The Shining: 9/10
Now here's an awesome horror movie, though to me, it's more a psychological thriller than anything, but the performance from Jack Nicholson is unforgettable. The score certainly helps make this quite a creepy experience watching. But I will admit, I hated Stanley Kubrick films the first time I watched them. But it seems on my 2nd viewing, I just LOVE them!
The cinematography is mystifying. And that kid is creepy as hell. Love the foreshadowing though, and the blood coming from the red doors, just pouring out like wine in a glass.
But here's two things I still can't wrap my head around:
1.
What's up with the guy dressed in the dog costume giving head to another guy? Is that Kubrick's fetish? Was he a furry? According to the Internet, the guy getting head is the previous caretaker. He was bisexual. Can this be confirmed?
2.
The ending. I really liked it. I'm assuming Jack being in that picture taken in 1921 explains how the Englishman serving beverages at the ballroom says, "you've always been the caretaker". So, Jack has been living alternate lives? Are we dealing with alternate realities where Jack is the caretaker at Overlook Hotel? That picture before the credits roll kind of imply so. I need answers!
Oh and the reason it doesn't get a 10/10 is because of the female lead. I wanted her to die off 30 minutes into the movie, and especially halfway through..seriously. Fucking annoying. I don't blame Jack for going crazy. A person like that in an isolated environment can make you go insane. Always with that gullible optimism. But it's her performance that I couldn't stand. It's like you see her and wanna rip her head off for being so dumb. I was really hoping Jack would kill her off.
Yeah, Olive Oil was pretty annoying in The Shining.
Seven Psychopaths
Caught an advance screening on Thursday and absolutely surprised me. It's very self-aware and if you're a film lover, you'll especially like it. While Sam Rockwell really steals the show, everyone was well-cast. A great dark comedy. One of my favorite movies of the year.
4.5/5
Taken 2 - 7.5/10
First movie was better, but there wasn't anything seriously wrong with the sequel (which is a great thing for a movie). This one was just more well-rounded by putting more focus on the family, undercutting some of the focus on Neeson's trademark baddassery (but don't get me wrong; he still delivers and steals the show when it's needed).
I think the minor fault lies in that there was nothing significant accomplished with the extra approach on wife and child (other than successfully preventing the plot from being too identical to the first and Kim's driving practice "paying off").
Not that I am particularly curious to know more about them, but I ought to experience something new with them if the movie decides to feature them more often. But again, it wasn't anything serious since there was still a nice amount of great, fun, satisfying, badass action like the first, albeit slightly less of it by comparison. So overall, I liked it for sure. I especially like how they treated Neeson's final conversation with the main antagonist. Nice touch.

Would've enjoyed it more if everyone and their mother didn't tell me it was a prequel... though I would've guessed that anyway based on the art style of H.R. Giger. He is truly a bad ass -> http://www.hrgiger.com

Holy mindfuck! I have never been that immersed in a movie before. Jesus H. Christ almighty. What the fuck did I just watch? It's either the most surrealistically violent movie I have ever seen or the worst movie I have ever seen. I cannot decide! Basically, the acting is fucking pheonomal from all the stars, especially Mathew McCounahey (sp?) and Juno Temple. I would have never pictured him doing a role like this. Unbelievable.
This is definitely an indie movie, as it breaks that happy ending rule of Hollywood. The NC-17 rating for it is justified. This makes Shame look like a PG-13 movie when compared to the sexuality/nudity in it. And then there's the hyper-realistic violence. But that ending..holy shit..had me on the edge.
Do not see this movie with someone who is sensitive to violence or sex. Seriously.

Many factors could be in play, for example: Bale could be reasonably taller and with larger bones. To be the same weight would mean he would have to be much thinner than you to make up for the extra height and bone density.

LINCOLN
A super early advance screening (studio rep said we were the "first in Minnesota" to see it) as this doesn't come out til December. Overall it was boring and somewhat disappointing given the cast and director Spielberg. Daniel Day Lewis was a good Lincoln but the content did not give him a whole lot to work with I think. Joseph Gordon Levitt is practically a cameo character, having maybe 2 dozen lines. The whole film felt fairly messy and will be hard to follow for many. At almost 3 hours, Lincoln would be better off as a rental, TV movie or redone as a HBO mini-series.

Just got back from an advance screening of Wreck-It Ralph, which was a ton of fun. Really a solid family film. Some great video game references. OMG fell in love with the omega super adorable Vanellope von Schweetz, the little girl played my Sarah Silverman. All the voice actors were perfect choices and nailed their parts.
Honestly, my adult critic side wants to give it a 3 or 3.5 but my inner child & gamer side is totally for a 4 out of 5!

How are you seeing all these advanced screenings?
It's 1 of 2 ways:
a) I am part of an online site that sends me the advance screening passes
or
b) I actively find them since Minneapolis seems to have a lot of them. We must be a hot spot for movie market research?

Mmm I wouldn't say for all gamers, probably not as much as say the Scott Pilgrim movie was. Wreck-It Ralph is still very much a movie for the kids. It definitely helps with getting a lot of the references here and there, but I wouldn't say there's a lot of them. Being a kid at heart is the most important factor I would say on how much someone will enjoy the movie. Being a gamer makes it better.

No, Argo was a great film, a nod to all films of the 70's and 80's, despite that not being the main story, but based on a true, declassified story, by ex-CIA man, Tony Mendes, who is played by none other than Ben Affleck. The writing is great for this, as well as the editing. It literally keeps you in suspense in some parts, especially near the end, no thanks to the editing and wonderful writing. This is definitely getting some Oscar noms.

Just got back from an advance screening of Cloud Atlas - an inspirational, moving epic film. There are some truly poetic scenes and lines of dialogue. It's also a visual feast at times. My mind is still trying to wrap around the whole story, featuring multiple time periods and clocking in at almost 3 hours. But by the end, it really finds itself despite lacking a "boom" revelation. Yet that's fine, especially if you are a hopeless romantic or believer in the human spirit.

It's really funny at start, when it introduces the characters and some of the jokes, but it falls flat on its ass and becomes cliche quickly near the 2nd act and so forth. I also laughed less as it progressed. Well, one of the reasons people didn't like the new one too much was because it paralleled the first movie a lot, and it was obvious too. The way the plot was structured was similar to the first. My friend even expected Peter to be bitten in a different setting or different way than by going to a lab. The only differences here was the villain, the girl, and the actors. Even the last scene of the movie of the funeral was parallel to the first one, except that was with Norman Osborn. It felt too similar, yet different and better.
I liked Amazing Spider-Man and what they did with it. It's sooo much better than original trilogy, IMO. But..I would have loved this movie if it came out, say, 10 years later after Spider-Man 3.

Comparing Amazing Spider-Man to Avengers is like comparing apples to oranges, really. It comes down to what kind of movie you prefer; a more focused story that follows one lead and explores more angles or an ensemble action movie...which is a recipe for overblown action and spectacle while the more traditional story structure takes less of a primary role.
As such, I thought both movies accomplished what they were set out to do well (Amazing Spiderman to be an improvement from the old series and Avengers to live up to the hype set by 5 movies), which is impressive. No, Avengers didn't deserve to be THE best selling movie, but the movie was REALLY entertaining, that's for sure.

Freddy vs Jason 7.5/10
Watched AMC's Predator marathon.
Predator 1 - 7/10 - Definitely a basic movie but effective in what it wanted to do. I thought Arnold was really good in this, actually.
Predator 2 - 8/10 - I actually preferred this one over the first one and Danny Glover was a badass. I can't help but wonder if they threw in a Jamacian mob for the sole reason that the have dreads just like the Predators (which had no significance, by the way).
Alien vs. Predator - 8/10 - I've heard the hate, but I thought this was a solid movie and the fight scenes were pretty cool. Sanaa Lathan was surprisingly effective as the lead. I wish there was more to it than just having a setting to act as a battleground for the two species and nothing more, but I may have been asking for too much. Finally, the Hispanic guy was SOOO annoying.
They didn't show AVP2 but I've seen that movie and it's pretty obvious why they didn't bother showing it LOL. I have also seen Predators, which was also a giant letdown compared to P1, P2, and even AVP.
Anyhow, it looks like I've seen the entire Predator series now. To sum it up, I don't think there is anything overly special about it, though I do recognize the charm it has that earned its cult following. I much prefer the Aliens series and mythology, though. So hyped for the sequel to Prometheus...whenever that may release or be announced.
