Valkyre - 6/10
Very good cinematography but questionable acting techniques/choices (IE - Hitler is the only character with a German accent) let this one down for me. The motives driving the main character are not explored fully, and the some parts of the narrative were sloppy. Some people even had captions to remind you who they were.

The amount of controversy this film is currently causing in Germany is unreal. Not just because of the subject, but also because of Scientology which is actually banned in Germany.
I have never seen my granddad as angry as he is every time they show something about it on TV which is a lot. In his eyes they are desecrating the image of Stauffenberg whom he met during the war.
I kind of want to see the film, but I'm not sure as I think I'd feel bad if I was to enjoy it..

zodiac - 9.5/10
this movie is a powerhouse
Zodiac is so creepy and so chilling. It's a murder myster based on a true story, fyi.
Taken - 8.5/10
Its like watching Bourne who is now in his 50's. Fantastic except for the lead female, she is a weak actress and in no way believable as the age she is supposed to be in the movie.
Ironman - 9/10. Almost as good as the dark knight. Tony Stark is badass.

I got this film because I had heard rave reviews of how much of a horror classic it is and because of my love of vampire films. No. It's rubbish, just rubbish, such a pointless movie. Do not watch!

Excellent film. Well made and very deep. Paddy Considine portrays his character brilliantly! A must watch!

The ending was brilliant.
Make sure you read the book. Not only is the ending more effective, but Aaron's back story is much more developed and interesting.
I watched Underworld 3: Rise of the Lycans on saturday and it was a great film, cool action scenes and the werewolves looked awesome. Some tiny cheesy bits but it didnt spoil the film, and they didn't milk the 'turning into a werewolf' scenes either which was good. I'll give it 8/10
Pretty cool soundtrack to the film as well so i'll have to check that out, the only thing that annoyed me were the idiots behind me.
Quarantine - 2/10 and thats cos the lead female is quite fit !
lasted 30 mins before i turned it off
i personally hate these 'as seen by a cameraman' films and didnt know it was one or i wouldnt have bothered at all

Role Models - 8.5/10 - Thought the film was pretty good, the humor in this film was really funny and you can't go wrong with Paul Rudd and the dude that played Fogal in Superbad. Stiffler was okay but the guy seems to always have the same expression on his face, the rest of the cast though were excellent.
Outlander - 6.5/10 - This film wasn't too bad, it was just a bit too long I think. There were some really good effects though but the alien to me didn't look all that. Some of the acting wasn't that good and the only draw for me was Ron Perlman, who as always, manages to play memorable and bad *** characters.

Slumdog Millionaire: 7/10. I enjoyed it, but I can't jump on the bandwagon as far as it being considered the best movie of the year.
Here's a couple of things I didn't like:
There wasn't enough character development to get me fully engaged. Salim.. this guy's a goldmine and they hardly touch on him. His part should have been more fleshed out, and if it was I probably would have had an emotional response to his death. Instead, I felt nothing.
Also, the acting from the older versions of Latika and Jamal was a little distracting. I thought the younger kids were much better.
And... the story takes place in India, right? Why are they speaking English exclusively? I can understand if there are some English words or phrases thrown in, but come on... Slumdog Millionaire should have been Hindi. It loses credibility otherwise.
Other than that, the music was great, the story was simple yet effective (even if completely implausible). It IS worth watching... just not as good as I was made to believe.

The Spirit - 3/10 : I thought it was going to be a great film since it was made by Frank Miller (300 & Sin City). I was wrong, very wrong.
3 points are for the art direction/SFXNo, 300 was directed by Zack Snyder whose current work is Watchmen.
Sin City wasn't completely done by Frank Miller. Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino also had a hand in that film.
The only film Frank has done himself is The Spirit.
I recently saw Push - 8/10 - Surprisingly good. I like the cinematography of it. The characters were far better than most recent "superhero" movies like Jumper. Acting fairly good too considering the same reasons. The plot was the most surprising part, in a good way. I'm still not 100% clear on it though. One of those you probably have to see more than once to fully understand it. At least for me.

Valkyrie - 9/10 - This was a very good film, the fact that this was based on real event to kill Hitler and how close they actually came to accomplishing it is what makes the film so intense, even though you know already, from history that it did not come to fruition. Unbelievable cast, mostly British but well picked, especially Bill Nighy, although everyone speaks in their native tongue rather than putting on a German accent to me did not hurt the film or make it less believable.
Punisher War Zone - 5/10 - What can I say, we came into the film about 5-10 minutes late, and about 5 minutes into it already it seemed like a pile of ****. Let me just state that Ray Stevenson to me was the Punisher but everything else just failed. They did get the violence right, gore was pretty good but again what a waste of a good Punisher...

Well I saw quite a few movies this weekend, so here we go:
Slumdog Millionaire: 9/10
I was sold in the first 10 minutes. The scene in which the police are chasing young Jamal and Samir through the slums was AMAZING. Not only was it a beautiful example of a good action sequence (it reminded me a bit of the chase in the construction site in Casino Royale), but the way that the heavy beats of the music resonated with the emotion of the scene was outstanding. The acting from the youngest Jamal and Samir was fantastic; young Jamal was actually my favorite of the Jamals. I absolutely loved the way that the narrative played out; explaining the reasons Jamal knew the answers to the questions through flashbacks was a brilliant move. I also loved the way the film opens with a Millionaire question, and ends with the answer. Just beautifully done. The dance sequence at the end was a great Bollywood moment.
There were a few holes, and I could have done with a bit more of older Jamal and the head police officer, as well as the Millionaire host. An extra 10 or 15 minutes would have made this an absolute perfect underdog story, but it's still 10x better than Rudy can ever hope to be. By far my current pick for Best Picture, and Danny Boyel should be very proud of his creation.
The General's Daughter: 6/10
There really isn't a whole lot to say here; very generic murder mystery. What gave it a 6 was a great performance by James Woods, but that's easily the best part of the film. Travolta is decent, as is the supporting cast, but nothing really wonderful about going on here.
In The Valley Of Elah: 7/10
It's strange that I would see two films involving military police murder investigations on the same weekend, but this was by far the superior of the two. Tommy Lee Jones gives a very good performance as a determined father trying to find out what happened to his son, and the supporting cast does a very nice job as well. My main problem was with the narrative's pacing. It moved at a snail's pace, and even the climax was quite anticlimactic. The directing was quite good, and the film had an interesting message.
Devil In A Blue Dress: 7/10
Second best movie that I saw this weekend. Denzel Washington plays a black man in 1948 that gets caught up in a sort of mob, political, murder mystery when he takes a job as an informant of a white gangster. The film is a period piece, and that aspect is done wonderfully. It has that great post WWII detective mystery vibe; first person voice overs and eerie city lighting. Not only do you get the great mystery feel of that era, but you also get to see how rampant racism was in America at that time (some great Driving While Black moments with police). Don Cheadle makes an appearance as Washington's mobster friend, and he provides some great comedic moments in a very dramatic setting.
Juno: 7/10
This wasn't the first time I saw this movie, but the first rewatch. I had grown somewhat iffy on this film after seeing all of the buzz it generated, but it really is a very good watch. Ellen Page's Juno is lovable, eccentric, but at the same time very genuine. Jason Bateman plays a wonderful character that boarders on very endearing to complete sleezeball. I was upset that he never got any form of redemption, but it was Diablo Cody's first script. The rest of the supporting characters are great, specifically J.K. Simmons. All in all, a very good film.
I feel the need to say a few words on Michael Cera though. He's becoming a HUGE one-trick pony. His character in Juno is nearly identical to Evan from Superbad, and from what I hear, also very similar to Nick from Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist. He has a new film coming out, and hopefully he doesn't try to pan this same character off again.

Oh come on, Zack and Miri had a bunch of good things going for it. Justin Long was great, as was the relationship between Darryl from The Office and his wife, Seth Rogan getting poon at their class reunion, Jeff Anderson, and not to mention the great chemistry between Rogan and Elizabeth Banks. I really liked this film; maybe my favorite comedy of the year.
And for whatever reason, I cannot bring myself to watch Nick and Norah. I'm 18 and I feel way too old to ever sit through a viewing. That Inde culture just really gets on my nerves for some reason.

1408 2/10 Poor film poor story. The story was confusing as hell and there was no gore. Nothing at all going for this film.
Cass 9/10 Great Film. Had a good story and was a great portrayal of the hooligan football of the 80's.
Vacancy 5/10 Decent. But what genre was it? Little gore and a lacklustre story it was alright but nothing more.
The Hills have Eyes 2 1/10 Awful Awful film. Poor Story. Poor Acting and even the violence aspect was poor.
Halloween (2007) 7.5/10 Impressive was hyping myself up for a huge disappointment but it was good. No trying to create a good story it knew what it wanted to achieve and that was a good slasher film.
Scarface 10/10 What can be said about this film? Fantastic Story. Fantastic Action. Fantastic Acting. Al Pacino was fantastic it was a truly epic film lasting 2 hours 30 mins and still after 25 years the best film about.
Carlitos Way 9/10
Another masterpiece with Al Pacino. Good Story and a truly brilliant film.
Untraceable 6/10 Decent film. Good story but a bit predictable. Had some good gruesome moments a is a pretty good film.
Paparazzi 5/10 Ok but the Story didn't tie up all the loose ends. But it did a good job of exposing the paparazzi for what they are. Scum.

1408 2/10 Poor film poor story. The story was confusing as hell and there was no gore. Nothing at all going for this film.
Okay, I have to completely disagree with you one this one; I LOVE 1408. The story isn't complex at all, there is a guy stuck in a haunted hotel room that won't let him leave; it doesn't take a genius to follow the story. There is no gore, because it isn't that kind of film. Thanks to the Saw series, modern culture seem to have forgotten that the horror genre isn't necessarily synonymous with gore.
I thought the story was interesting, it was written by Stephen King after all. John Cusack gives a superb performance, as does Sam Jackson in a good supporting role. I thought it could have been a little more creepy, but it does a good job of building tension and keeping the audience attentive. Though if you watch the film, make sure you watch the theatrical cut, not the director's cut. The endings are different, and I just really hate how the director's cut wraps up the story.
And Point-05; I find it hilarious that out of the films you mentioned, the Coen Brothers film is rated lowest.
With 1408 a lot of things confused me.
What was doing that to the room was it haunted? Or was it something else? Am I right in thinking nothing actually happened in the room people just halicunated?
Also when he is going through the vent was that all in his mind because he was seeing things from his past.
And then at the end when he heard his daughters voice on the tape recorder. So was the whole thing real or not?
I no some films don't have to have gore but heres my problem.
What genre was it supposed to be? It wasn't horror because it wasn't scary and it had no gore. Was it a drama? I don't need a film to have gore but I feel a lack of a story in a horror film can be made up with in gore. But 1408 didn't have anything to do with Horror which is what Stephen King is about. There wasn't gore or anything scary.

The hurt locker: Really enjoyed this movie, especially the very well done soundtrack! Everyone in the cast performed well, and you could really feel the tension in the scenes. I loved the ending, though it my not sit well with all. The special effects were not overdone and looked pretty natural, the dialogue was a bit iffy, but there certainly were some gems among the tripe. My rating for this one is 8/10.

It was a psychological horror film, which means that it's scariness is entirely subjective. You didn't find it scary, but I know quite a few people that were very disturbed by certain elements, and that was the point. A huge portion of Stephen King's horror genre is psychological; Misery being perhaps my favorite example. I thought the old man in the vent was really scary, as was the concept that in death his little girl is interacting with the twisted souls of those haunting the room, as though to suggest that death isn't the eternal bliss we're meant to expect. That itself is a horrifying concept.
As far as his little girl on the tape recorder, I think that we're meant to believe that what happened in the room was real. When his wife makes that realization after hearing it, I thought that was a great ending.
Yeah I understand sort of I just guess this kind of horror isn't my cup of tea. The ending just confused the hell out of me it went through the whole film as though it was a hallucination sort of thing and then at the end it just went actually it wasn't.
I can sort of understand the appeal but it just isn't my kind of film I guess. Also the ending when he set the room alight confused me. Because the room was screaming with pain. So was it haunted or was it just a mental room. Another thing it took a while for the hallucinations to start so why did one of the maids gouge her eyes out after being locked in the bathroom for just a few seconds?
I suppose im more of a physical horror man than a pyschological.

Friday the 13th remake - 6.5/10 - I was expecting it to be much more gruesome so it left me disappointed in that area but besides that it was quite decent.
He keeps this girl alive in his basement and if you dont pay attention you have no idea why. The reason is that this couple find a locket that was Jason's mothers and apparently looking at the locket the girl looked like a young miss vorhees so jason thinks its his mother but he puts her in chains so she wouldnt escape. This makes me think "If jason thinks shes his mother why bother chaining her up at all? if shes trying to escape shes not your mother." so i just thought that part of the story was quite stupid

Charlie 8/10 Good representation of London life for the gangsters. Little gem of a film.
Insanitarium 7/10 Decent film. A surprise really. A decent story even though it wasn't a fantastic story it was solid. The gore really make this film a 7 and its well worth a watch.
This Is England 8/10 Fantastic film. Good solid story and a fantastic ending. A really really good film.
Quadrophenia 9/10 Even 30 years after its release it is the best film representation of the Mods and Rockers fued. Add to this a good story and some good acting this really is a brilliant film. Add in a fantastic soundtrack by The Who it really is an unmissable film.
American Gangster 9.5/10 Denzel Washingtons best ever film. A fantastic film with an awesome story. Fantastic part played by Denzel and I really am becoming a fan of Denzel Washington.
Remember the Titans 9/10 Different sort of film to what I normally like but a great film. Great acting by Denzel and a fantastic story amazing to believe this is a true story.
Borat 9/10 Best Comedy Film Ever.
My Kingdom 2/10 Awful Film. Confusing Story and it fails to work on any level. Its supposed to be a gangland thriller I think but it doesn't achieve that. A fantastic performance from Richard Harris really deserved a much much better film than this.
Got lots more films to watch. I have to watch Animal,Next, Chronicles of Riddick, 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, The Prestige, The Invasion, No way Home, Animal Factory.
I done a full review of American Gangster. Its not a fantastic review and its gonna have a few mistakes. The review contains major spoilers.
American Gangster Review.
American Gangster is a film based on the life of the notorious drug dealer Frank Lucas. The film takes a look at his life through two different aspects. Through Frank's eyes and through the eyes of detective Richie Roberts the man intent on catching drug dealers. American Gangster is a epic film in every sense of the word. The film is 2 hours 40 minutes long and is a fantastic film. A brilliant story is well complimented by some fantastic acting by all of the cast but the man who stands out is Denzel Washington who makes the role completely his own.
The film starts with Frank with his mentor and friend Bumpy Johnson. Frank worked for Bumpy who was a popular gangster who used to help the locals of Harlem. When Bumpy Johnson dies of a heart attack this leaves Frank to take over and start a crime empire. Frank respected Bumpy's style and modelled himself on bumpy. Frank learned to dress modestly and keep out of the spotlights to achieve what Bumpy had achieved.
After Bumpy's death Frank travelled to Bangkok to see his “cousin” who works for the army. Frank wants to purchase a huge shipment of drugs but the only way for him to achieve this is to cut out the middle man. Frank goes direct to the jungle to purchase his heroin. This proved to be what made Frank successful. Whilst other drugs on the streets were about 40% pure these drugs were 100% pure and by cutting out the middle man he could sell better quality products at half of the price. But how would Frank get the drugs back into America? Simple his cousin in the army would fill the coffins of dead soldiers with drugs. Within weeks Frank had two tons of Heroin in the US. Frank says he was making $1m a day selling drugs and within weeks he had bought a mansion and several nightclubs. Frank had effectively done what no one had done before he had successfully gained monopoly control of the market due to the high quality and cheap price. The whole opening of the film is well done. The film is a captivating film and will hold your attention for the whole 2 hours and 40 minutes.
When Frank gets wealth he brings his entire family over to live in his mansion with him. He also gets married and owns many properties. Frank keeps his low profile image and this means the trail never goes back to Frank but on the night of the first Joe Frazier versus Muhammed Ali fight Frank breaks this image to don a $50,000 coat which his wife had bought him. This proved to be his downfall. Detective Roberts was at the fight to be on the look out for possible drug's lords. When he sees a man wearing a $50k coat and shaking Joe Frazier's hand but has no real business he knows something is up. When a unknown man has better seats than the Italian mafia something is wrong. He broke the first thing Bumpy had taught him and he realised what a grave mistake he had made.
Frank had more to deal with than just competitors. The corrupt police where always threatening him and he had to pay off many police. Detective Roberts was one of the only non corrupt policeman in the state and this was the only man who could stop Frank. Frank had to contend with another gangster, Nicky Barnes who was selling worse products under the Blue Magic name which Frank had made his own. Shortly after this Frank's wife was nearly assassinated by unknown assailants. This made his marriage take a turn for the worst. Everything was going wrong for Frank and when the US troops were to be withdrawn from Vietnam it looked like threatening his drug supply. Frank flew to the supplier but his supply had to be cut off.
Frank's cousin was arrested for shooting a woman and this would turn out to be a bad thing for Frank. They use this to make Frank's cousin wear a to try to get information from Frank. This allows Ritchie to find out that the war planes were bringing in the drugs in the coffins but Ritchie is told to stop searching the coffins. Corrupt policeman Trupo raids Frank's house and steals his emergency money supply. Frank is enraged and want's to kill Trupo but his mum convinces him not to.
Ritchie still convinced the coffins contain drugs follow the truck containing the coffins. He strikes gold and finds the Heroine in the coffins. This nails Frank and his family who were associates. Frank tries to threaten Ritchie but it doesn't work. He has no choice but to turn in all of the corrupt police men he knew of. This was the biggest bust on cops the city has seen and Trupo kills himself to avoid arrest. Frank is convicted for being a drug lord and is sentenced to 70 years in jail Ritchie becomes a defense attorney and his first client is Frank Lucas. Due to Ritchie Frank gets off lightly and gets 15 years in jail.
American Gangster really is an amazing film. A riveting story along with lots of action make this a truly brilliant film. With the fantastic acting all round it really is a brilliant film. Denzel Washington was amazing as usual and really made the part his own. Russell Crowe who played Ritchie Roberts produced a fantastic performance. The amazing life story of Frank Lucas is well told and fabulous acting and great production make this one of the best Gangster Movies of recent times. The film is similar to Scarface despite being very different in certain ways. Scarface is my favorite movie of all time and American Gangster is the closest film to knocking Scarface off. The films are similar due to the genre of the film and the films really are similar in the fact that the performances of the lead actors are sublime. American Gangster caters to all tastes of movies and really is an unmissable film.

The movie itself wasn't awesome, but I have to say, the special effects were AMAZING. I'm talking Micheal Bay/Transformers status. And the ending was kinda unexpected for me. Not bad, give it a rent.
Jason Statham is way better as the Transporter though :D

It was the english remake i have never seen the original but i felt this film is one of the best i have ever seen, there is no soundtrack apart from the songs played within the movie which is almost never, meaning no background music which i feel works really well.
The two bad guys played their characters very very well and really made the film creepy! there's a slight twist in the film that has you going WTF and the camera angles are really differant from any other film i have watched
If you havent already seen this GO GET IT!

Hahahhaa, I can't believe "How High" and "In The Land Of Women" were mentioned right next to each other. High High is one of those movies that you assume you're going to hate until you catch a part of it on TV, and realize that it's either garbage, or sheer brilliance. And In The Land Of Women is a sweet film: good performances and Meg Ryan is still adorable.
Frost/Nixon: 8/10
I had hoped to see all of the Best Film nominees before the Oscars, so I went to see this last Friday with the intention of seeing Milk the following morning, but I never got the chance. Aside from The Reader this was the nominee that got the least attention, in fact, the lack of people despising it probably assured it the least attention of all the noms.
Go see this movie. Obviously the acting is fantastic, and Ron Howard even manages to do some very interesting directing. There are Fourth Wall breaks throughout the film with the characters, very similar to that of a documentary. This was obviously the intention, and it works extraordinarily well. The movie feels real, which is something that couldn't say about any of the other Best Film noms.
My only real complaint is that it seemed the planning of the interview seemed to go by much too fast. Finding funding for the project was such a huge problem in the film, yet it didn't seem like much time was spent on it. An extra 10 or 15 minutes would have been nice; the 2 hours goes by faster than you would believe.
last movie i watch was Nightwatch

God On Trial - Loved it, really liked how it handled the sensitive topic of religion. The production wasnt much, but the look of the film was quite amazing! The acting was authentic, with some good names being put to use here. 8/10
The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button - Very much enjoyed this movie, was a good cinema experience. I've seen people comparing it to Forrest Gump, and I cant even begin to imagine the comparison, its so skewed! The cinematography and special effects(at one point I couldnt distinguish!) were awe-inspiring, but the editing was lacking at certain spots. Overall a really simple storyline, but was done very gracefully. 9/10
Frost Nixon - Another movie which I enjoyed very thoroughly. Even though it was just people talking, it was really interesting to see the buildup to that point and how Frost perseveres. The look of the era was very much authentic. I especially enjoed the bits of comic relief scattered all through the movie. The music was really uninspired and felt like it was ripped off from TDK OST. But it didnt distract from the movie at all, rather added to it. The acting was really top notch. 9/10.
The Boy In The Striped Pajamas - The best one i've watched this week. The view of the holocaust through a boy's eyes was amazing and enchanting. I felt attached to the characters throughout the movie, the acting was nice. The cinematography was nice, and the editing was top notch. The ending had me tearing up, and was done beautifully. 10/10

I just watched High Plains Drifter
I'd give it a 7. Clint Eastwood directed it, and it was a very dark story, almost like a Japanese Horror, without the effects. The plot was very bleak, and of course there was a twist, but it was made little too obvious. Typical vengance/horror, but made in the 70's and set in the Old west.

My friend saw Push over the weekend and told me about Dakota Fanning's legs as well. He thought they were too skinny and odd looking. It's a little bit creepy to think about it, considering she was probably 15 when it was being filmed. This is a great piece of Dakota Fanning though:

I saw two movies this weekend:
Flash Of Genius: 6/10
I cannot stress enough how much I don't enjoy Greg Kinnear. I absolutely adore Little Miss Sunshine, and You've Got Mail is probably my favorite guilty pleasure movie, but I hate Greg in both movies. His one-trick-pony character is still present here: an idealistic, self-centered ******. Based on a true story, this film covers a part-time inventor's struggle against the Ford corporation in the 1970's after they allegedly stole is design for the intermittent windshield wiper. You see how his life falls apart as he sinks deeper into his obsession with gaining the credit he feels he deserves.
The performances from the actors are actually pretty good, though the supporting cast I felt was very underutilized. Not that any of them really stood out, but they just weren't there. To his credit, Kinnear does do a very good job of really showcasing his character's downward spiral, but it just takes too long to get to. The courtroom scenes are done quite well, and are easily the highlight of the film; unfortunately, they don't come until about the last half hour of the film. My biggest problem is that the issue of combating the power of a large corporation was boiled down to the most basic of arguments: they can't just screw the little man, they have to abide by the law, ect. I felt that there was a lot of room to expand on power that large corporations have, and how they can effect the world around them for either positive, or negative ways.
I'd say give it a rent, but if you can see it for free, that's the way to go. It's not a film I would ever watch again, but I think that it will speak to a lot of people.
Before The Devil Knows You're Dead: 7/10
One of the greatest opening sequences in any movie that I've ever seen. The first shot is literally a back-view of a naked Phillip Seymore Hoffman, boning Marissa Tomei doggy style. It's pretty shocking right away, but there is a note of comedy to it. It may sound weird, but I saw a lot of similarities between this films and Vantage Point, which is a movie that I vehemently abhor, and to a very small extent, Pulp Fiction, which is one of my all time favorites. All three of the films use a style of narration in which the story is told largely out of order, and as you go on you're given the perspectives of more and more characters which serve to fill in all the gaps. BTDKYD uses this style VASTLY better than Vantage Point, but it becomes so fragmented and frequent that it really fails to be as effective as Pulp Fiction.
The story is an interesting one: two brothers that need money plan to rob their aging parents' jewelery store, but during the heist things go horribly wrong, and then the lives of everyone in the family seemingly fall apart. I thought that the acting was superb, the story and characters were interesting, and I commend them for not going with a nice Hollywood ending. That said, it has some serious flaws. As I stated above, the constant moving back and forth through time and characters becomes somewhat of an annoyance towards the end. The ending, while I liked the idea, does leave some serious questions unanswered. By the end of the film you're so invested in the story and the characters (some of them anyway, a few, like the father and Marissa Tomei were very underutilized) that the ending seems a bit like a cheap shot.
I say give this one a rent, although I would actually pay for it if necessary. I may watch it again one day, but it really isn't something I would ever buy.

Second time seeing it and still one of the years best movies. Only things I didn't like were the acting in some parts and that damn Bollywood dance scene during the credits. That scene alone ruined the end of the movie

Faithful adaptation, to faithful in some parts were the dialogue was word for word as the graphic novel. Fight scenes were good, not to much slow motion like in 300. Malin Akerman..... so hot.... I hated My Chemical Romance's version of Desolation Row that played during the end credits... such a ****ing horrible song.

lol i love it how we all talk of "character development" in this thread! I bet half of you don't even understand character development.
Woa holmes, slow down. While I agree that a lot of the films mentioned in this thread are absolute garbage, you can't just attack people for using the phrase "character development." Unless you're a critically acclaimed writer, or perhaps a professional film or literature critic, keep that kind of stuff to yourself.
Milk: 8/10
Well I hate to say it, but Sean Penn was worthy of the Oscar. I really don't like him, but after two hours I had barely realized that it was him at all; he simply WAS Harvey Milk. One of the best performances I've seen in years.
Much of the talk about this film deals solely with Penn's performance, the rest of the cast and crew did a wonderful job. James Franco and Emile Hirsch were fantastic; Franco in particular is coming into his own as a wonderful leading man, and I'm really looking forward to see what he has in store over the next few years. Josh Brolin is another guy that is really taking over Hollywood one film at a time. I'm really upset that he wasn't in the film more, but every time he came on screen with Penn he added this wonderful, seemingly claustrophobic aspect. My only complain with him was that he seemed to lose it way too easily, but that could have easily been fixed with more screen time.
Gus Van Sant really tried to make this a more Hollywood acceptable film. His last few films, Paranoid Park, Elephant, and Last Days all seemed very preoccupied with watching people walk for minutes at a time; those kind of experimental techniques are largely absent here. One thing that he does do wonderfully is interjecting some faux Super 8 footage of gay pride rallies and speeches by Milk, which all appear very genuine, until you see James Franco or one of the other cast members.
I really loved this film. I think it is easily the second best of the Best Picture nominees at this year's Oscars, and had Slumdog not been there, I have no doubt this would have won. I would have given it a 9, but I felt that more time needed to be spent on the Brolin/Penn dynamic, which ended up hurting the emotional climax of their relationship. Aside from that, GO SEE THIS FILM!

I love this film.
John Malkovich portrays the mentally insane Cyrus 'The Virus' Grissom perfectly. I don't think anyone else could have pulled off the role.
Cage plays the good guy, and throughout the film you have nothing but sympathy for him lol one thing after another goes wrong for him.
It's not an award winning film but for what it is, give it a chance, it's a 2 hour crazy plane ride

The comment you made isn't exactly something that a smiley face fixes. Maybe it was my mistake, but it just seemed a bit like an angry rant. If I made the mistake, then that's my fault. And I didn't jump down your throat, just made a civil comment. And I would have expected "Don't call me holmes," to be followed by "I'm not Latino!" ;)
Anyway, I saw another movie last night, and I'm going to get reamed for not saying that it was horrible. Just try to read what I say before ripping me a new one.
Confessions Of A Shopaholic: 6/10
Chick flicks are a guilty pleasure of mine. I actually own You've Got Mail, had a Sex And The City girl's night out over the summer (8 girls and me, it was awesome), and I saw 27 Dresses twice in the theater. I have no idea why I am able to tolerate these kind of films, but I just am. One thing I will say, if you're going to see a film like this, you have to see it with the target audience. Don't rent it and watch it alone when it comes on DVD, go to the theater with a girl, see it when a bunch of girls are in the theater as well, and then you'll really get a good perspective. Everyone in the theater with me was really into the film, and that made it much more enjoyable.
My love for them aside, they all have their faults, and CoaS is no exception. First I'm going to go with what I liked. Isla Fisher is charming as all hell, and can play a wonderful, jovial girl. She really shines in the scenes when she's pretending to be an expert at finance; this girl has some comedic chops. She's also a surprisingly great fit for the slapstick kind of humor that permeates a good portion of the film. I also really like the lead male Hugh Dancy. Normally it's the guys in chick flicks that I really hate, but this guy works. I suppose the fact that he's British in the film gives him a certain credibility that is usually lacking, and he's also a character that oddly has some depth. He isn't just some good looking business man, but a guy that is really trying to fight the legacy of his rich and famous parents and do things his own way. The film expands on him much more than I thought it would, and it was a nice touch. The film also featuers Joan Cusack and John Goodman as Rebecca's parents, and they're great. They play a wonderful, cheapskate older couple, and should have been in the film more than they were.
There was something in this film that I thought was borderline brilliant. A big part to the character of Rebecca Bloomwood is that she legitimately does have an addiction to shopping. She has an idea that she might, and there are moments where she experiences some cognitive dissonance when it comes to shopping. The way they handle this inner conflict she has is just wonderful. She envisions the mannequins in the stores moving, and they try to coax her into spending even more money she doesn't have. They'll say things like, "You could wear it with anything." Being someone that loves shopping myself, I can't tell you just how much this resonates with me. There is also something very creepy and almost a little bit sinister about mannequins coaxing her into shopping, and it adds an interesting dynamic. I only wish they had been in the film more.
The film had some other redeeming qualities as well, but those are the most important. This really could have been a good movie, but I hate to say that the script is just bad. It seemed like the writers just had 50 ideas, and instead of working it down to 10-20 and developing them, they just decided to stick all 50 in and see how it goes. There were themes dealing with addiction, a love story, a man's struggle to get out of the shadow of his parents, a fight between Rebecca and her best friend that just comes out of nowhere, the concept of holding companies responsible for their actions, the policies of debt collectors, America's credit problems, America's materialistic culture, and quite a few more. The script is just all over the place. It seemed like whenever they would start hinting at a really good concept, that was it, and they would move into something else. Hardly any story or character development aside from one scene at the beginning when you discover the origins of Rebecca's shopping addiction. If this script was whittled down to just three or four of those ideas I mentioned above, I think you could really see a quality film.
I had such a good theater experience, and I really wanted to love this film. 6/10 might be a point too high, but there were just so many things that the film hinted at, and never used. A script rewrite would have made a huge difference; all the materials they needed were right there. If nothing else, the stuff with the mannequins is brilliant, and hopefully those clips will be on YouTube soon. Isla Fisher and Huge Dancy have a good chemistry, and the supporting cast features some great comedic actors like, Ed Helms, Fred Armisen, John Lithgow, John Goodman, Joan Cusack, and Wendie Malick. It's not a perfect film (or even a good one by classic standards) but it has some good stuff. Take your girl, or just go with some girls, and you'll probably have a good time.

Past few nights I've watched a few, I'll add them here.
Ghost Town - 7/10
I enjoyed watching Ricky Gervais and the lonely theme to the film but the ghost comedy seemed a little to silly for my liking. Once I finished watching the film though I really enjoyed listening to the soundtrack and thinking of parts of the film, worth a watch.
Gran Torino - 8.5/10
Clint Eastwood pwns! Very well made film, I highly enjoyed everything about it, I'll definitely be watching this a few more times and I want all my family to watch it too.
The Chumscrubber - 9/10
Awesome film, it's got a feel to American Beauty to it but a totally different film, I think it'll appeal to the younger audience since the main cast seem in their late teens. It's not a trippy film but I can tell any weed smoker would really appreciate a lot of the scenes and the overall story, it's got brilliant directing and enjoyed every second of it. This films going in my top 10 of all time. :p

They are doing a remake already? It will be crap. The movie was good, though they skimped on some key information that I learned afterwards on IMDB like...
Eli was a castrated boy :liar:!? When she said she wasn't a girl I figured she just meant she was a vampire and the snatch shot was so brief I didn't think castrated boy at all. Then there was the guy she was living with in the beginning. At first I thought he was her father and also a vampire. Nope, turns out hes some human pedophile servant of hers. Does the movie make any reference to that? Nope.
Using a dummy for a dead body made me lawl and ruined the scenes they were in. Still a good movie, but it felt unfinished.

Really good film and the arty type characters look well awesome, the story confused the hell out of me at first though, I didn't know the names of the characters till half-way through. But it's got some twists in it and makes you think into the future, pretty trippy film.
Twilight - started off as an 8 then fell into a 6.5 for me from the middle onwards. I thought the movie was interesting and had a pretty good amount of original moments for me in the first half but then the second half just seemed to be full of cheesy romance cliches.
It's a fine movie. Just wish is was as good as the first half all through out and it could've been really good.

I saw The Day The Earth Stood Still, and it's mediocre at best. I think I reviewed it a few pages back actually.
The Shawshank Redemption: 9/10
I'm ashamed to say that I hadn't seen this film until last weekend. My mom was actually so disgusted that she bought me the two-disc special edition DVD when she drove me to Best Buy to pick up Resident Evil 5. I watched the film that night, and I understand why it is currently ranked #1 on IMDB's Top 250 list. Though he has seemingly disappeared in recent years, Tim Robbins gives a wonderful performance as protagonist Andy Dufrain, who is convicted of murdering his wife and her lover, and then sentenced to life in Shawshank Penitentiary. There he encounters a plethora of interesting characters, including hardened prisoners intent on violating the sanctity of his rear-end, prison guards of questionable moral character, a domineering warden, and the wiley prison smuggler Red Reddings, played by Morgan Freeman.
Never before have I seen a movie that comes to such a wonderful full circle. At the end you learn the significance of what appear to be seemingly insignificant little details in the plot, and how they work towards the ending is remarkable. If you haven't seen this film, go out, buy the two disc special edition, and enjoy.
Watchmen: 6/10
I have a feeling I'm going to get some negative feedback about this one, but I just didn't find Zack Snyder's "Watchmen" to be a very engrossing film. For the record, I DID read the graphic novel, and yes, I understand just how faithful it was to it. That's actually my first complaint. There is a reason that books and film scripts aren't the same length, and that is that what makes a good book (or in this case graphic novel) doesn't necessarily make a good film. I always like pointing to the first two Harry Potter films as an example of films that were very faithful to the original source material, but failed to capture any of the real magic of the books; the Watchmen is like that for me.
I had really high hopes after the first 15 minutes or so. I thought that the fight at the beginning with the comedian and his masked assailant was done very well, and the opening credits to Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A Changing" was beautiful. But after that I felt I was treated to an episodic internet video podcast (with very high production values) of character back stories. It worked in the graphic novel, but in a film it just appears fragmented, and the intended effect of making me care about the characters completely failed; by the midpoint of the film I was looking at my watch to see how much time I had left.
There were a few other things that really bothered me. I thought that Ozymandius was poorly cast; I didn't think he was remotely intimidating, and I just couldn't by that this was the smartest, and most athletic man on the planet. I also wasn't a fan of Dr. Manhattan. I understand the appeal, but I really don't think it was necessary to show his schlong, especially that many times. The actor's voice was also way to soothing; it only became annoying after a while. Rorschach was suffering from The Dark Knight syndrome; that voice was way too gravely when the mask was on. And is it just me, or did the original Silk Spectre's old-lady makeup look awful?
I feel I need to say that when Rorschach was sent to prison, I thought the film really picked up. I enjoyed all of the things that happened after that, aside from some of the Antarctica stuff. There were some serious moments of brilliance in this picture, but as a whole, I just don't think it worked. I loved all of the Comedian's scenes, specifically the scene in Vietnam, and the rape sequence. I thought that most of Rorschach's stuff was pretty good, especially everything in prison, and I loved the opening credits. It isn't a bad film, but there just weren't enough good moments to justify how boring I found the first half of the film.
I saw a bunch of movies over my spring break, and hopefully I'll get those reviews up soon. I also saw Coraline in 3D, The Last House On The Left, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Let The Right One In, and The Prestige.

Good, but not as good as Casino Royale. Great action scenes however there wasnt any real plot. Sort of a filler movie. Hopefully the next one will be better.
loved this movie fair score but i disagree with your review. The title means "period of consolement" the movie is about how he consoled himself with the death of his girlfriend from Casino Royale. He spent the entire movie tracking down those involved with her death. I think the plot was excellent and digs deep into the character development of James Bond and how he became the person in earlier movies(as these are prequels).

Knowing - 8.5/10 - This movie really surprised me. It was actually quite good compared to the typical Hollywood apocalyptic movie failures in the past and considering how cheesy the trailer seemed. The story had me guessing how this was going to end till the very end when I was surprised in certain aspects.
Some of the lighting and scenes with these "messenger people" were well shot, but that should come to no surprise since its the same guy who did Dark City.

LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT 6/10
satisfying enough, simple plot a bit too graphic with the anal rape scene but other wise worth a rental. Good action
KNOWING 8/10
Nice sci-fi flick. I'm not a Nick Cage fan but he didnt ruin it for me. interesting story but became predictable 1/2 way thru but was still fun to watch it play out. The disaster sequences were expertly done. Worth a trip to the theater IMO.

I saw a bunch of movies over my spring break, and hopefully I'll get those reviews up soon. I also saw Coraline in 3D, The Last House On The Left, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Let The Right One In, and The Prestige.
THE PRESTIGE 8/10
I saw the Prestige a while back it stars Hugh Jackman & Christian Bale and the plot was great i never saw the end coming. Great performances by all involved. But this movie reminded me of...
THE ILLUSIONIST 8/10
On the same level as the prestige but a little more predictable but only in the last quarter of the movie so it doesnt sully the experience.Stars Edward Norton also very well acted

I've seen so many movies these past two weeks, it's crazy. I'm taking a small break so that I can watch the second season of Lost, but I still have a few films in my collection that I haven't even spun yet. Those are up next. Thus far this week:
Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives Of Others): 8/10
The 2006 Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film is a really wonderful little film. It takes place in East Germany in 1984, and is an exploration of the life of a government surveillance officer. The plot focuses on one particular case, involving the surveillance of a play write and his actress girlfriend that are suspected of Western leanings. The surveillance officer Hauptmann Gerd Wiesler finds solace from his life of extreme loneliness in theirs, and slowly starts to soften his political views to help them evade arrest by the government he has sworn an oath to. The film is in German, which is generally a turn-off to the American audience, but it's well worth your time.
Cidade de Deus (City Of God): 9/10
I picked up this gem of a film at Blockbuster last week and finally got a chance to view it. I'm a sucker for any film that showcases impoverished countries, especially during the 1980's. Based on a true story, director Fernando Meirelles' most well known film tells the story of gang violence in the City Of God, a brutal neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, from the perspective of a young boy named Rocket. The film takes place from the 1960's through the 80's, and follows the evolution of the gangs and drug trade in that area. The narrative is told from a first-person pov of Rocket, but it takes the time to tell each characters story, and then weaves them all together. Very cool script, some pretty brutal moments of violence, and overall definitely worth your time. Again, it's another foreign language film, but don't let that dissuade you.
The Wrestler: 8/10
I've been so excited to see this film, and I finally got the chance earlier today. Obviously most here heard the buzz over Mickey Rourke's triumphant comeback performance, and the buzz was well deserved. This is perhaps the grittiest film I've seen all year; Slumdog had some really gritty elements, but it was stylized and precise, this is almost entirely handycam, and I loved it. It really feels like a documentary at points, especially all of the professional wrestling stuff. Oddly enough I think the film, and Rourke's performance works best outside that world in his scenes with Marissa Tomei (so hot), and Randy "The Ram's" daughter, played by Evan Rachael Wood.
Overall, I wasn't as wowed as I thought I'd be, but it is a damn good film, and I think should have gotten a nomination at the Oscars. As to the whole Penn/Rourke thing, I am a HUGE fan of Milk, and both were fully qualified for the award. People talk about Slumdog being the little darling of the year, but I think this was it. It isn't as epic as Slumdog or Benjamin Button, it didn't have the wonderful production design of Milk or Frost/Nixon, but it is by far on par with those films, and any other film that I've seen this year. Try to see it before it leaves the theaters completely, but if you can't make it, it'll be out on DVD April 21st.
Twilight - 4.5/10
Acting all around was horrible, bad writing in parts and there was some scenes that were so horrible, the apple scene and baseball come into mind.
Quantum of Solace - 7/10
Not better then Casino Royale but still a good fun Bond movie.
Dragonball Evolution - 0/10
God awful movie, worst movie I've seen over the past I'd say three years or so. Acting was horrible, SFX were horrible, the script was beyond horrible, etc. Seriously, it's like they only used $50M of there $100M budget.
Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skulls - 8/10
On Blu-ray it looks great but it has a lot of dodgy lighting in some scenes which makes the actors seem like they have a light shined on them and other noticable mistakes. Like when the area 51 guards are shot an the Russians just shake the guns. But since it's a family film it'll get away with it.

But since it's a family film it'll get away with it.If I recall right, it looks like the backdrop in the Area 51 segment is just a painting of the desert behind them and may very well be. There's various parts of the movie I think may have purposely been done old-school, but it just seems weird now with all other Hollywood blockbusters using the best modern day techniques/technology.

Crash (2004) - 9/10
Brilliant film. All actors pull off stunning performances. Can't believe I never watched this film before. A must see for anyone. If you liked Gran Torino then this film is for you.

Wolverine Origins - 6/10 - This was a very good quality copy but it was a workprint version in very early stages as some of the CGI wasn't even finished or applied yet. Didnt particularly like how they handled the Wolverine and Victor as kids, some the action scenes were okay. Was Disappointed with Gambit and Deadpool was interesting to say the least. Wife said it was okayand reckons we should still check it out at the theater when it comes out...

I would warn you guys that a 14 min sequence with more deadpool time was not included in the workprint. I quite enjoyed the movie to be honest, it'd make for good action on the big screen.
Don't Mess With The Zohan - 6/10
If you take it for what it is then you'll enjoy it. Good Laugh.

2/10 is too harsh. Granted it was nowhere near Zoolander, not even in the same league but it was funny! I'm sticking to 6/10!
Punisher Warzone - 5.5/10
The action was great but everything else was pretty meh, couldn't give two ****s about any of the characters.

Ah great film, I'd rate it the same. Reminds me of a party where I stuck a tea towel around my head and pretended to be Cleon. Those were the days...

The Gladiator! 11/10!
One of the best movies ever.
Close Encounters of a Third Kind - 8.5/10.
Not bad but the PQ is rather grainy on BD. But I guess it's about 30 years old so it understandable.
Die Hard 4 - 9.5/10.
Great film and it's got the best PQ I've seen yet on Blu-ray. No grain and no menus for selecting to start the film.
