For those who dont know MLG is the largest console gaming tournament. They currently only use SSMB and Halo2. Last year they gave out about 1million in prizes for Halo2 alone! They have now started a GoW online tournament with 5000$ in prizes. Take note this is the first game they have added to their tournament since SSMB and Halo/Halo2 back in 2004.
“Gears of War has a huge community of active players and has a good chance of making the 2007 Pro Circuit,”
With the rise of competitive gaming, this is another thing Sony will have to pick up on. So far MLG only uses xbox games beside ssmb.

So anyone can be in the tournament if it happens?
I'm still a little pissed about the NXL thingie, why don't they make tournaments for "normal" gamers too:-|
No sony game will be in MLG. Just in case you didn't know that it is owned by MS. Also lame thats the only 2 games they have.

This is great news. MLG only uses the best and most balanced games (for competitive purposes) but at the same time will only use fun games too. Gears certainly fits into that, and not many other games do...
Tekken used to be part of MLG, but because it lacked any serious fanbase, was discontinued. Gears should be a long lasting edition to MLG, especially since there are going to be 2 more Gears games, and of course, since MLG will have to lose Halo 3 in a few years (once it becomes outdated).
MLG has saved Halo 2 online and kept it as THE longest lasting game on number 1. Why? Cause many fans were asking for changes to the online system, and Bungie wouldn't do it. After MLG regulars organized (myself included I'm proud to say!) Bungie finally recognized the fan base, and that was the first time they made a playlist that the fans ASKED for. Before, it was simply whatever Bungie thought was fun.
Also, some of you may find the name MLG to be somewhat odd, and you've never heard of it or anything... or maybe only heard it once or twice...
Well, actually, they have an active community FOUR TIMES the size of PS3forums.com. That is, ours is 26,000 members. So over 100,000 is theirs. Lol, check out the site, at www.mlgpro.com
I just went over there for the first time in months. And I must say, business for them looks very, very good. The website WAS running on some pretty basic stuff, but now they are very professional looking.

MLG is not owned by Microsoft. Why do people feel that they can just make up BS all the time and get away with it? As I said, Tekken used to be a game in MLG, but it didn't have the fan base... The reason there are no Sony games in MLG is because of Sony has no games that fit the criteria.
1. Multiplayer
2. Highly strategic
3. Fun
4. HUGE fanbases.
Sony has more games, and more market share. But because they are spread out so much, each game gets a smaller piece of the pie. Unlike Halo, which has more first day sales than any other media ever, and yet it is on the Xbox, which has a smaller userbase.

did ps2 drop lan support.
Yeah MLG is big though I wonder how much those players get payed. Didn't some news a while back concur that MLG payed $1million towards their #1 Halo2 team?
Their are separate fighting game tournaments run for Tekken5/DR by the fighting game community ie Evolution2k in the States, Absolution in Canada, and Super Battle Opera in Japan just to name a few well renouned ones. One reason Tekken failed to become an MLG tourney game was that it had a low player turnout (most fighting game tourneys are run by the fighting game community in Family Fun in the West Cost and not sure for the name for East Coast arcade tournaments and as well as on Xboxlive.)
Gears will definitely be a great addition towards the MLG tourney, can't wait for it.

Yes, MLG recently payed $1 million to Final Boss, the number one Halo 2 team (though they ironically lost the championship game!). This is a contract though, and while I don't know the terms, it IS a 3 year contract.
I imagine this excludes prize money. I had heard that at a time (and this is when the tourny was smaller), some players were making over $100,000 a year, easily, and one person (i think) made like $300,000 dollars. If you can make it, its really, really good money.
MLG and gaming tournaments in general I believe are trying to make it into a X-games sort of thing with bigger sponsers. Also making more mainstream will help lose that appeal of gaming to not seem like a "serious sport." Hopefully this is one of many steps in doing so.

True that. Scion and boost mobile and red bull are all sponsors that have nothing to do with gaming, but they are sponsors. MTV has had MLG players on it a few times also.
And as for the serious sport thing... I am split on that idea. It certainly deserves a "sport" status, for the gameplay strategy, teamwork, and hand eye coordination, but I still don't personally consider it a sport. If archery at a still target is considered a sport enough to be in the olympics, then gaming sure as hell should be too.
Not only that, getting it into homes (TV) where millions of people can view this event like the X-games would raise awareness for those around the globe and bring about a new age of competitive gaming. About the serious sport issue, to me it is considered one for the time spent training, devising strats, and competing against other countries to be world champions is one to note ie Counterstrike at the WCG, ESWC, and many more.

What you mean Halo 2? Thats a really good question. I'm still not sure how MLG pulled that one off...

No I mean Gears of War. Last I recall, I could hear people who joined my server in Halo 2...
Last I recall I can hear people on GoW just fine too.

Not in LAN games, which are the only way MLG tournaments are played. Unfortunately, Gears' flaws are still existant in LAN games.

Yeah I know... it sucks and thats why I'm not playing online yet, but my point was that Halo 2 was MUCH worse when it first came out.
I remember sitting in matchmaking for 15 minutes and still not getting into a game.
I remember (like gears) not being able to hear people.
I remember constantly not being able to join my friends games cause of "server issues".
That all along with:
1. Modding of all sorts
2. Super bouncing
3. The guardian glitch
4. Standby and secondary standby
5. Being able to FORCE a certain map to be played
6. Being able to grab flags through walls/floors/ceilings
7. Being able to bounce flags across levels
8. BXR
9. BXB
10. Double shot
11. Quick reload
And those are just the ones off the top of my head.
Honestly, Gears is not all that glitchy. It needs to be fixed, but its really not that bad in comparison.

Well for one, MLG tournies are mostly LAN, but have been played over Live before, so that isn't totally the case. Also, most of Halo 2's glitches are actually use able in LAN games. I didn't even list the ones that they fixed (ala sword flying and such). The reason Halo 2 still works... is because of refs for the game. They watch every game and make sure no one is cheating. Doing so can cause a forfeit. If this online tourny is popular, it will then become a regular MLG game, and in that case it will have refs.
Also, you have to give Epic mad props. Not only for offering their DLC for free (whatever it ends up being) but also for getting the update out so fast. I know its not out yet, but its coming. It took Bungie till like February to ACKNOWLEDGE that Halo 2 had problems... and even then it took until like May (e3 right?) to get the patch actually in place. Epic is doing a really great job, especially if they can get the patch out before new years.
