I would just goto start>run>msconfig, then goto services and click the box that says hide all microsoft programs. Then check waht you need and dont need.

Yeh basically what coltde420 said, and google around for some programs to fix your registry (defragment it, delete crappy broken links etc..)
Possibly even turn off the nice beautiful Windows effects (if your using XP that is)
Cant think of anything else really, without going really deep into disabling some other things that arent needed

Also if you want your computer to run faster, check out this link, http://gear.ign.com/articles/626/626714p1.html I know it says its for battlefield 2 but it doesnt get to that till around page 7 or 8. The first 6 pages give you a bunch of wys to make your computer run alot faster. It also has links to free programs like ccleaner, and if your using xp it has alink for tunexp. These are both great programs that will help you very much.

First

1) Run MSCONFIG and stop all unessesary start up services & programs
2) Do a disk clean
3) Download & install & run registry mechanic
4) Defrag

After all that, then check how much of your paging file is being use, if you have about 250mb of RAM free then thats alright, but it just depends on how much paging is being done, if you have 512mb of RAM your page file should be between 500 & 750mb, if you are using more then half of your page file when the system state is Idol, I would reccomend uninstalling some services or putting more RAM in the system.
