Samsung Wages Blu-ray Price War on Sony PS3

Samsung has launched the first volley in what's likely to be a move to keep its product competitive with Sony's PS3. It's the first first price drop of its BD-P1000 of the New Year. The reduction is only by $100 at retailers like Best Buy and Circuit City. But, Amazon.com has dropped the price even more reducing it by an amazing $330 US dollars.

The Blu-ray player first arrived last June at a cost of $1000. But with the release of Sony’s PS3 that includes a Blu-ray player Samsung is in for some stiff competition. The 20 Gig version of the PS3 retails for $500, currently the least expensive way to get Blu-ray into your home theater.

Many are saying they’d rather buy a PS3 than a dedicated BD player. If you have a 1080P HDTV you’ll get full resolution Blu-ray out of your PS3. But there is this matter of upsampling your regular low def DVDs that PS3 might not do as well as Samsung’s BD-P1000. However, with the PS3 you also get a pretty good video game console which is sure to be a hit with the kids.

This is good news for blu-ray support : cheaper reader. But it is only a move to counter ps3 as a reader : hd-dvd reader are still cheaper...

Yeah, that unit is a little old. And notice how ALL the other players are still their original MSRP. Its good if you want a cheaper dedicated BR player as the Panasonic, Sony and Pioneer models are more then $400-700 US then this model...

This may be the beginning of a price war. A slow drawn out price war.
