Eagerly-awaited Gamecube title The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will mark the end of an era for the hit series, according to a transcript of a recent radio interview with Shigeru Miyamoto.

"This will be, without a doubt, the last Zelda game as you know it in its present form," Miyamoto is quoted as saying.

He declined to reveal any more details as to how the series will be reborn, but did go on to assure fans that Twilight Princess will be absolutely aces: "Our goal was to make the best Zelda game ever. The most rich, satisfying and [melancholic].

"I worked on it personally, moreso than Wind Waker. I haven't invested as much into any game as I have this one," Miyamoto said.

"We've really improved it in just a few months. Everything's coming together, much quicker. We may have some last minute ideas," he added.

And it's not just Zelda who'll be getting a next-gen makeover - everyone's favourite Italian plumber is set to star in a new game that will "surprise many people," according to Shigsy.

"Mario is and always has been a concept title from his birth. We are always looking for new ways of playing with him, manipulating him, to create something new and unique. We're in the midst of preparing something special for his future, something never before seen.

"Give us the benefit of the doubt. I think we'll present you with a new way to have fun."

Miyamoto also revealed that Mario is getting a brand new sidekick, but kept firmly schtum on the details. However, he did confirm that Mario 128 is simply a working title for the forthcoming game.

"Of course we will rename it, obviously. That won't be the only surprise of next year though.

"Mario 128 played a large role in the Revolution's conception, much like Mario 64 in its time. But we won't just be focusing on Mario. We're working on some very impressive games which push interactivity to the max. Games of a new era," Miyamoto said.

"We will be revealing many details soon... While our gamers are sleeping, we're busy thinking up new ideas. But while they're playing, we're playing as well," he concluded.

Let's just hope they're not too knackered to finish Twilight Princess - the game was recently delayed until next year, with a Nintendo bigwig saying it won't appear until April at the earliest. Roll on 2006...

"Mario getting a new sidekick", "The last Zelda as we know it"

What the heck is going on!!! What could Nintendo possibly do to either of these franchises that they havn't done!?

Hopefully it's for the better!!!

It really makes me wonder what they are doing with the Revolution. They must be cooking something up with that thing if it's changing the direction of their games.. Nintendo is going bonkers, and hey, maybe thats a good thing!

Maybe what they're tryin to say here is that it's probably the end of Zelda for this gen and might revolutionize it by next-gen or when they plan to release a Zelda game on the Revolution.

Well if the controller will truly be revolutionary (heat sensors, customizable buttons, gyroscopes - these are just a couple of the crazy ideas that have been suggested), then I think that games in general on the Nintendo Revolution will have a huge makeover. This could turn out to be good or bad for Nintendo, but either way it will be very interesting to see how Nintendo "revolutionizes" the gaming industry.

What Zelda is the only reason I got gamecube and now they aree booting him off. THat's it revolution is out of my list.

Zelda was one of the few reasons I bought a Gamecube (other than Super Smash Bros. Melee). Once Wind Waker came out, I was really hyped. Don't get me wrong, the game was great, but it was definitely no Ocarina of Time, and to alot of people it was a huge let-down. After I beat Wind Waker I gave my Gamecube to my sister and bought myself a PS2, and never turned back from there. But hey, I plan on buying a Revolution and a 360 once the price drops, and I'm sure it won't be a problem to pickup a copy of Twilight Princess for $10 in a few years.

now Nintendo better have make an anouncement at TGS (even though they barely attend)

this revolutionary control pad is giving me a headache.

I think it was very sad for nintendo to only have made only 2 games for each of there first party games that were good Franchise.

I would almost be certain that Zelda will make a huge impact in the next-gen system. I just hope that the whole "make over" is speaking more of the graphics. I would love to see Zelda come back as a game with a more adult rating. I just hope Nintendo knows that their fanbase is growing up.

DUH they aint Axing the Series, he saying its the last one on Game cube and the next one will be on the Revvy, you really think Nintendo will Axe one of their most popular Franchises!

That would be corporate suicide!!!

I'm sorry but Metroid and Zelda kept Nintendo afloat this gen, and there's no doubt they're going to keep them afloat next gen (unless the "makeover" will kill off Zelda as we know it... an exceptionally great game).

Donkey Kong was a workin formula on the N64 but then they put Bongos in it... WTH!?
Smash brothers was a smash hit!! (sorry  ).

Hopefully they don't alienate their franchises from the Nintendo fans, or they're doomed.

In order for Twilight princess to be the best zelda game ever it would have to be better than the Ocarina of Time and I do not think nintendo can ever surpass that game.

Don't forget the Good Charlotte ad campaign.. I almost threw my GameCube out the window right then and there.

i think it will surpass Ocarina of Time (bold statement i know), it's just a question of will it get noticed with all these next gen games. :?

Think about an updated ocarina of time (graphically), with a huuuuge middle field, and a battle system similar to Wind Waker, and we've got an Ocarina of time killer. And i think the wolf system is going to be killer 8)

It should definitely be a great game. Nintendo screwed up on the last two Zelda games, they owe it to use to create an incredible Zelda game.

The anticipation for this game is the highest I've seen. This game is looking to be a long-awaited, true Zelda game.

I think you may be right, because I just looked up some info on Twilight princess and it looks like it may surpass the Ocarina of Time.

yeah it's got the ocarina of time formula, but he's grown up all the way 8)

my only worry is that it doesn't get noticed because of all this mayhem with next gen consoles

I don't think it will just fade into this gen. They spent a whole lot of time on this game, I have a feeling it will top the charts for rentals, purchases, at least for the Gamecube. The PS2, PSP, and Gamecube all have excellent lineups to tackle the launch of the Xbox 360. GTA:LCS, Socom 3, Socom PSP, Kingdom Hearts 2, Zelda:TP, and my personal (2nd) favourite, Phantasy Star Universe.

Lp Chris XII

Oh yeah, I'm not sure how I forgot that. In fact that was one of the reasons I wanted to buy a Revo, so I could get Twilight Princess for $5 used and play it on the Revolution.

If the REV controller has a gyroscope in it (which is the latest rumor, no?) how do you think that might effect the re-birth of Zelda?
