Las Vegas (NV) - While we are just noticing a greater adoption of the first-generation high-definition media formats and a new wave of 50 GB Blu-ray will be shipping in the first quarter of this year, we have spotted the next generation of Blu-ray at CES.
TDK previewed a massive 200 GB Blu-ray disc, which the company claims has enough room to store approximately 18 hours of high-definition video (encoded at 24 Mbps). The company did not say when such media may be commercially available.
Awesome. Betcha anything the PSP2, with its mini-cell and mobile Nvidia GPU will have mini-Blu-Rays. :)

The only problem with the slot drives in the PS3 is that it doesn't support non-standard disc form factors. While I do think the slot drive is cool and beneficial in terms of reliability, it would have been ideal to be able to use mini Blu-ray movies that you might buy for PSP2 in your PS3 as well - thus getting rid of the problem with the UMD format, paying full price for something you can't watch on any other platform.

HD porn all day long LOL just Kidding
See... now this is far more impressive then the recently announced 50 gig HD-DVD
That would be FULL Prison Break season on one disc ! cool
imagine the potabilities of a BR burner and a pc  this is why I prefer BR over HD-DVD and would prefer to see it prevail

That's pretty sweet. Now if they could make portable Blu-ray players with the screens and all then that would be a major milestone. Or some really long games.

I hope so...... That would also mean psp2 would be able to store games almost twice the size of that on a DVD9 using a single layer mini-BluRay (16.5GB). :D
with the possibility of 8-layer discs in the future.

The mini BD discs excite me more
PSP2 could benefit from this and a mini cell if there is one and a mini RSX. (Sounds corny saying mini all the time;))
Portable BD players also Sony should take advantage of this.

+rep, was gonna say the same thing, and I think that's a brilliant discovery by TDK and would be a brilliant move by Sony. One has to wonder though...how much longer would it be until the PSP2 comes out? Would Sony drop support ala Microsoft, or try to maintain some dedicated dev support ala Nintendo with the Gameboy Advance? In any case, I hope this prospect sees the light of day.
There's so much going on in technology right now, I really think this is the among the most exciting times for gaming.
you probably wont see the psp2 for at LEAST 2 or 3 years. The prices on bluray technology would have to come down exponentially to allow for a decently priced handheld (if it would use such a thing). The news is exciting!

I wouldn't want my PSP2 to have a mini blu-ray in it. all that disc spinning would just eat up for of the battery and battery life on the PSP sucks as is. Instead of more power the next PSP needs to follow in the footsteps of the DS and come up with something innovative. Like the next PSP should come standard with GPS and a camera and a touchscreen so every game can use those features at will. Alot of power isn't needed for hand helds. damn man. mini cell + mini RSX + mini blu-ray = 0.003 seconds of battery life.
whats the point of 200gb discs if no players will read the discs?
go buy a new ps3?

Hey, PS3 accepts mini-dvd disc. Thus, why not mini BD?

thats cool and all but will the ps3 be able to read these new dicks or will we need speacial players. similar to how you need a dual layer dvd player to read dual layer disks.

My ps2 reads Dual-layerd DVD's... a feature that i didn't even know until i tried it... :D
The PS2 reads multi-layer DVDs (GoW2 is double layered), why shouldn't the PS3 do it with Blu-ray?

PS3 does read dual layer Blu-Ray discs, a 50gb disc is a dual layer and they should be able to read thes 200gb disc when they hit the market....in like five or six years.
