View Full Version : Blu-ray users, do you plan on buying a stand alone player?
I remember when DVD first came out, I wanted a player so badly, I almost bought one then I got the PS2 and was really happy - but I wanted a stand a lone player, and I got a really good one, it was a Sony flagship DVD player at the time and cost quite a bit of money - but it was worth it. The PS2 really helped DVD sales a lot and pushed a lot of people to get stand alone players down the road...
So my question is this: Do you plan on getting a stand alone Blu-ray player in the next 2 years or so?
My answer is yes. I plan on getting one in the next year or so, Im waiting on a newer player that has better processing for BD discs, something "better" - I guess.... then again there is always something better. But you know what im trying to say, I will want to get one yes. The next wave of Blu-ray palyers will probably have atleast 1 or 2 that are considered better than the PS3 (which somewhat holds the crown at the moment for best BD player).

I don't see a standalone player as a sound investment right now. I get my HD fix with the PS3. When and if Blu-ray wins the format war, then I will consider a standalone player. The prices will have gone down quite abit by then.

Fair enough. And I understand, I was actually thinking about that while CES was going on, I already have a HD DVD player (stand alone Toshiba) and im upgrading that to their flagship model the XA2.... so why gamble (when I clearly dont need to anymore than I have) with the formats and their success, most likely ill wait on the stand alone BD player until 2008 when I really know whats going on, because right now no one has "won" the war.
I wouldn't buy one before we know for sure. Though I wouldn't buy a HD DVD player either, my PS3 is enough to play HD movies.
But in the future when there are a lot of players and movies on the market then I would buy one.
Edit: The PS3 can compete with the most expensive Blu-ray players anyway.
It can compete with them NOW.... thats true. But much like the Toshiba series of HD DVD players - there is always something better on go... The A1, and the XA1, and just recently the A2 and the XA2, and as a weird twist they released the A20, a middle step between the A2 and the "enthusiast player" XA2.
The PS3 is on par or even considered the best BD player now.... but it wont hold that forever, its merely a point Im trying to make. I might get one if something comes out that is superior though.

Absolutely not. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, this is just my personal preference. Reason being is that my PS2 has been my DVD player for the past 5 or 6 years, and with that said, I've seen no reason to purchase a stand-alone personally. If that's your decision though, that's great, but not for me personally. I'm all about multi-functionality, as long as it's practical, anyway.
Sure... each to their own. ONE of the few reasons I wanted a good DVD player when they first came out is because my PS2 acted a bit strange sometimes when playing DVDs, I know many did.. and many did not act funny with DVDs. It was just something you had to accept. So I decided to go get a full on player that had all I wanted and more, it was a very good player back then too. I had it up until I bought a upconverting DVD player 1 year ago, and I got rid of that player 3 months ago when I bought my HD DVD player... I just end up this way I guess. ;)

I will buy just a Blu-Ray burner for my PC, as you know PS1 was my 1st and only CD player,PS2 was my 1st and only DVD player,PS3 my 1st and only Blu-Ray player.
Cool hahaa.... really stick to your guns then huh! I really just wanted to know for personal reasons what a lot of you might do if given the choice, which you are... so yeah... but youll get a BD burner! Thats cool, they have BD Drives out now.... looks pretty interesting.

Different strokes for different folks, right? For me, it hasn't had any issues, and I don't have a very large movie collection in the first place, even to this day. I understand though that everyone has their preferences and reasoning behind it, well said.
Eventually I'll get a standalone player with DVD upscaling, but I want to wait until they are like 2 or $300

Yeah, that would be nice. We don't notice the difference though because we didn't have an upscaling player before the PS3. Hopefully, upscaling is added on with a firmware update.
I'll probably get one in a couple years, when I buy a second HDTV.
Of course, I might just get a second PS3 then... who knows? :)

yeah i will get one or 2......Just for Entertainment needs
I will get a stand alone, when they are cheap enough to be an easy purchase. Maybe when they are $199 and have upscaling, then I would be forced to get one...

If Sony can update the firmware than there's really no reason why the PS3 shouldn't be able to compete with any standalone player for the next five years. The Cell+RSX combo has way more processing power than what is in those standalone units. Although Sony may not update the PS3 playback quality at all in order to encourage people to buy their standalone players.
ill get one when they are under £100, until then ill just stick with my ps3 when i get it.

I'm planning to get the Sony BDPS1...I've got a bunch of Sony points that I've been saving from the Sony promo running at my work. I think I have about enough to get it for free (I have to check).
If I was not getting this I would buy the Pioneer standalone model. I've been reading that its the best model out (also the most expensive)...

I will definately get one if I get a second HDTV and that prices drop significantly below the price of a PS3. I think it would just be nice for people in my house to just pop in a disc to watch movies, without touching my PS3.
While its true that the PS3 has the capability to out do most BD players for the next while Im not sure they will update its functionality to actually out do them, ofcourse this is just a guess and its not actually based on anything!
Its interesting to see a few of you will get them, but based on what ive seen most of you will wait to see what happens first.
I'll buy a standalone when enough advancements have been made to warrant the purchase. I don't think that will happen in the next 12 months, but probably soon after that, by then they should be in the $350 range.
True. I think thats the general concensus.... either your NOT getting one or you are getting one when they get better than they are now or will be soon.
I'd consider getting one in a few years (assuming it "wins"), but only if i could get a multidisc one.

for the time being i dont think most people are going to get one for the simple fact thats its just alittle over priced at the moment, maybe if it went down maybe. but i dont see why i would need to get one just yet, my ps3 works great with blu ray and for what it cost i for one will be making sure i get my moneys worth out of it lol.

Yeah ... they just cost to much for a stand alone blu ray player ... but when they get better and cheaper I might.
For my own personal use
The Playstation 3 will be the central of all my entertainment
thou I wont buy another BD player I'm sure someone else will in my house

I agree wholeheartedly, i am going to wait to see who wins to buy a second 1, unless blu-ray wins soon, then i will wait for prices to grace the $100 mark. Or if hd-dvd wins, i will wait until i get a hi def tv, then i will wait for them to go down to around $100-$150. I would only pay a little more for the hd-dvd player becaus ei have a PS3/Blu-Ray player, and dont need a second one, but if hd-dvd wins, i will pay a bit more if its my first.

Yeah, I really could use a second, but I definitely don't want to buy one until they improve to beyond PS3 levels. No reason to have 2 (essentially) first-gen players. The Pioneer Elite model is tempting though. I'm thinking around 18 months from now, when manufacturers are releasing their third gen players (also likely when we'll see stratified models -- high end, midrange, basic -- from each manufacturer).

As good as the PS3 is, I don't have any need to. If I became aware of some great feature in a standalone player that I just had to have that might change my mind, but most likely I'll have no motivation to even look for more. Plus, I'm finding that regular DVDs look fantastic on the PS3 with my TV. Maybe it doesn't upscale, but it sure looks good to me.
