I've notice many type of aspect ratios on BD
1.85:1/2.35:1/2.40:1
which one is full screen
and will I be able to use Zoom option on my Bravia to cut off the boarders on enhanced widescreen BD's?
and please tell me that no BDs use the same ratio as SCREAM did on DVD cuz that took the piss (massive boarders/itzy bitzy picture space)
sorry I just wondering
also hows the PQ in 1080i?
I've never notice the difference in "p" & "i"

i dont own a ps3(yet) but i can assume it would have an option somewhere for widescreen output or something..

NO, its on your HDTV.... you can zoom, but for the love of god why!? Aspect ratio was the original artists (directors) intention! By changing the ratio you cut off pats of the movie and you cannot see it, thus ruining many shots. I have no idea why people like to do that.

 take it easy my TV don't cut off bits
it has many options and none of them actually cut off the ends
also I have a smartfit & 14:9 option
however Samsung TV's do cutoff bit cuz it actually zooms right in
I believe they have a 2× zoom however mine just removes the boards
even on them films with big boarders I lose no picture
plus widescreen boarders on a widescreen tv looks dumb

Well you cannot change the picture without stretching or cutting some off, its impossible, So either way you are ruining the original intent of the film maker and the way it was meant to be seen.

And "black bars" on movies is how they are supposed to be seen.... its not dumb, its called cinema.

Yeah, this drives me nuts as well...If people don't like bars...then Zoom away, but now you're cropping the image.

And for the most part...BR and HD DVD titles are 2:35:1

I agree, I don't know why it makes people mad, but "widescreen" is supposed to have the black bars...

Cinema is cinema... not supposed to be messed with!

To make it very basic
ZOOM = Degrated picture quality...

2. to see the difference between progressive and interlaced is not easily noticable with specific attention being paid to it

It depends on what you are watching rather than being hard pressed to tell. I only have a 1080i 65" HDTV, but my friend has a 56" 1080p HDTV and when watching the same movi on Blu-ray, I was able to tell minimal lines in some aspects of a program. It is nothing to write home about, really that bothersome, or even noticable to the untrained eye... but I know when my TV does it!

ultimately we want 1.85:1. This mean that studio edited the film to fit on our widescreen TV. 2.35 and 2.40 is the lazy way out for studio.

I want studios to keep using whatever aspect ratio they want, I could not imagine some classic films in complete 16x9 full widescreen it would look so weird.

I agree with this post 100%

And so many people STILL seem to ask stuff like

"I keep on gettin black borders at the top and bottom of my screen on some DVD's. How do I make them go away - they shoudn't be there cos it's a widescreen"

There are 2 main widescreen formats! 16:9 and 2.35:1

When you watch either - leave them the hell alone! Don't set your screen to super wide, mega zoom, or whatever the hell your screen offers you - set it to the "let me see it like the film makers intended"

Then if it's a 2.35:1 widescreen presentation - then even on a widescreen it will have letterboxing. Don't be tempted to stretch, skew, zoom or anything!

Personally, I cannot stand the way it looks when you "zoom" or stretch the image, it looks terrible and I cant stand knowing that while im watching a movie that Im missing some of the picture. Plus..... it bothers me that im missing out on the IDEA of the shots.... the scenes. Some of the aspect ratios make a huge difference in a way you see the movie.

I couldn't agree more...I can't remember the movie of hand, but they are having a distant dialogue and if you zoom in on the picture one of the people disappears out of the back of the scene. You are left with a person talking to themself....Just doesn't look right

That applies to most films that arent comedies ...... but even some of those. How many times have you seen shots in movies that would be ruined by this? All the time..... so many shots would be changed... it would suck.

Heh. If you really want to watch a high-def movie in 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 aspec ratio, and don't want the cinema bars, then watch it from a projector. If you have a good dvd player and a good projector, it won't display the black bars and it will show the movie in it's original format as intended.

Although when watching a regular dvd movie or something in HD, I like to see it in 1.85:1 so it fills the TV out. But that's just me.

I agree! I love having "black bars" on my movies, it makes them look so much better..... I can only imagine what some classic films (or even new ones like Kingdom of Heaven) would look like ZOOMED or shot in full 16x9..... it would look bad and take away COUNTLESS shots from even 1 single movie.

When you stretch a 2.35:1 film up to 16:9 you stretch everything vertically.

If you are prone to such a completely stupid practice, you need a brain scan.
