View Full Version : Is it possible that Nintendo Revolution...

...vs. PS3 will be more accurate than Xbox 2 vs. PS3. It seems that they are all using IBM to make their respective chips. I also imagine that they will all be incredably powerful. I don't think the disparity in power will be as apparent as it is in today's consoles. However, Microsoft may be taking themselevs out of the contest early by the adopiton of HD DVD as medium while PS3 and possibly Nintendo using Blu-Ray. If Blu-Ray emerges as the industry standard M$ may be crippled. In the end I think the PS3 will emerge on top, but with Nintendo's focus on gameplay, fun and whatever else they have cooked up to create a gaming "revolution/something new and different" (their words) then I speculate that Xbox 2 may end up as #3. What do you guys think?
Understand that Nintendo's revolution is more than likely Hardware based. They already tried this with the N64 (THe analog Stick and Rumble Pack). It took all of a year or 2 to copy Nintendo and...

I know what you mean by gimmicky, and no that will not save them. I gave some thought to the post titled “do you think the age of gaming is dying” and felt it had a ring of truth. Couple that with the fact that all three consoles are in a sort of power ‘arms race.’ Now I like great graphical games as much as the next person, but I’ve never had more fun than playing NHL 95’ on the Genesis. When I played hockey on an Xbox I had no fun and didn’t play again.
My ‘technical’ comments on the new systems were based on the following articles:
http://cube.ign.com/articles/529/529130p1.html
http://cube.ign.com/articles/522/522559p1.html
http://xbox.ign.com/articles/553/553059p1.html
Of course this is all speculation (which I happen to enjoy), but I feel it is more than plausible that medium choice (HD DVD or Blu-ray) could determine the outcome the next-gen race. The “Playstation” name alone is enough to make it PS3’s game to lose. Presupposing Nintendo doesn’t use their own proprietary format, if they choose the ‘winning’ format they could be vaulted into the #2 slot. I also think if Microsoft is bent on beating everyone to market, it follows that their system will be less powerful than either the PS3 or the Revolution.
I also understand Nintendo’s 3rd party woes and licensing problems, etc., but I would bet they don’t screw up like that again.
Everyone thought they wouldn't screw it up again this generation either.
Also why would Nintendo choosing Blu-Ray give them such an advantage? Did MS using DVD like Sony really help them that much?
I do not believe that power alone will be the deciding factor. You could build a car with 4 V-10 engines each hooked up to one of your wheels. But if you required the driver to push 4 different gas peddles and time the presses perfectly, it's not going to work. At best they may push the pettles for 2 of the wheels and let the others go unused. Now if someone built a device that helped you press all 4 at once and simplified doing so it would be really powerful.
WHat am I getting at. Sony's PS3 could be all powerful, but the Multi-Core design is going to be really difficult to harness unless they build some great tools. MS is building those for their design and people know they can do it. Can Sony?
When talking about Nintendo keep in mind that just because they are releasing later does not mean they will be more powerful. The GC is a prime example, outside of RAM and the fact that it has a real GPU, it's overall power is comperable to that of the PS2. It came out the same time as the Xbox and doesn't really hold a candle.

The reason DVD didn't help Microsoft out was because it was an already established standard. Within the articles it talks about the new standards on the horizon which will pit Blu-ray against HD DVD. The reason that this makes a difference is that if people have to buy new systems to watch movies on these standards then it would be advantageous if that feature came with a new gaming unit, much like DVD playback with the PS2. At that time very few people had DVD players which added value to the PS2. The new standards are very comparible to the beta and vhs standard battle. As high-def televisions become more common eventually movies, etc are going to distributed on either Blu-ray or HD DVD. This fork in the road did not exist when both GC and Xbox were released making DVD playback a moot point. However, this time, the new gen consoles are going to be released near the government's Dec. 31 2006 deadline that television signals be broadcast in digital. What does that mean? That means there is a push to sell televisions capable of handling the transition, specifically, manufacturers are pushing Hi-def tvs. Todays current DVD's produce a picture that is inferior to what current TV's are capable of handling. This all adds to the undercurrent for new standards, specifically HD DVD vs. Blu-ray...which one will emerge? Who knows, but if Microsoft chooses HD DVD, which they indicated they are going to and that standard does not emerge, then Nintendo will be prime for the #2 spot.

Frankly I would truly love to see Nintendo back in business. I own a GC alongside my PS3 and I will tell you it is a very under-rated gaming console. The graphical power is right up there next to X-Box, and I am not kidding you, that tiny system can pack a massive punch! It also has some fun games:
Resident Evil
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
Monkey Ball (terrific arcade game, one of my favorites ever!)
Metroid Prime (beautifully done, graphics are so nice)
Plus they have several good multi-platform games like Splinter Cell, and James Bond.
But mainly, I just hate Ecch-Box with a passion. Nothing would make me happier than to see it crash into video game hell. I think it is over-hyped like non other. Yes, the graphics are better because DUH! IT's NEWER!!! Plus they act like they have the greatest game ever: Halo. Yes it's fun, but ummm, I own a PC so I don't really need an Ecch-Box. Oh! what 'bout Halo 2? Ummm, wait a couple months and I can enjoy that right here on my PC. Owning an Ecch-Box is about as pointless as buying that Ab-Fabulizer crapola.
Theres really no need to criticize another system in such a biased way. Just makes you appear as fanboy. I for one..really enjoy the Xbox and what it has to offer, but now Im taking this off topic so back to the subject at hand.
FYI - Microsoft has in no way whatsoever indicated they are going to go with HD-DVD.
Also there has been no announcement concerning Halo2 going to PC. The only official discussion concerning Halo2 and PC is that they are not currently working on it or have plans to do it.
Back on Topic.
I do agree that if Nintendo chooses correctly, it will give them a boost in the market. What I would argue is that a company should design their console in such a way that it doesn't matter which one they choose. They design it in such a way that they can benefit from either's victory.

You're right. I thought Microsoft had chosen HD-DVD, but they haven't. However, Toshiba and NEC are pushing them to choose the standard. However:
"The Consumer Electronics Show has confirmed that Microsoft chairman Bill Gates is set to give a pre-show keynote speech in Las Vegas on January 5th next year - with a public announcement of Xbox 2 widely expected."
Plus this fact:
"...Microsoft confirming that Longhorn will be compatible with the HD-DVD format, a competing technology backed by Toshiba and NEC."
As Blu-Ray technology isn't complete, it would seem difficult for Microsoft to use Blu-ray. Sure they could switch, but if M$ really is planning on going to market first, then game developer's probably need to know asap.
Kaz Hirai and David Reeves get promoted
By: Justin Pinter
Kaz Hirai, President of Sony Computer Entertainment America has been recently promoted to executive vice presidents of Sony Computer Entertainment's corporate executive group. Along with him was SCEE president David Reeves.
Both men have been defending the PS3 in the later months, Kaz with comments on PS3 game pricing and Reeves with comments on the sales of the PS3's sky rocketing even if there were no games for the launch.
So only with time to tell, this could be a good desicion for Sony or this turn of new events could lead to more problems.

Wasn't written too well, so had to do some significant editing.
Yeah, I know. I am glad you took off the end sentence. I hated it, although I didn't know I should just leave it with the 2 paragraphs.
