View Full Version : Microsoft's Peter Moore Praises Revolution Controller.
Xbox boss reiterates Bach's "touch a billion consumers" E3 message
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz at the Tokyo Games Show, Xbox VP Peter Moore has praised Nintendo's "innovation with the new [Revolution] controller", and reiterated the need for the industry to grow into new markets.
"I want to give kudos for Nintendo for its attempt at innovation with the new controller," Moore commented, saying that the new device would -"bring people in that, as Iwata-san said, are either lapsed gamers or gamers that are intimidated by the complexity of the controller."
In the second half of our interview with Microsoft's head of worldwide marketing and publishing for Xbox, which you can read on the site today, Moore went on to argue that the digital lifestyle functionality of Xbox 360 will offer non-gaming consumers a similar incentive to get involved in the market - and reiterated the company's controversial message from E3.
"We said at E3, we want a billion consumers touched in this next generation by our industry," Moore said. "That was an industry message. Certainly, we can see Nintendo rallying to that cry and reiterating what Robbie said on May 16th; I heard the same words come from Iwata-san of Nintendo yesterday."
He then revealed that Microsoft is also looking into ways ot make games on its platforms more simple and approachable, while still retaining a level of complexity that makes them difficult to master.
"We need to grow as an industry," he concluded. "Having a simplified controller is one tactic in what is a larger strategic battle we need to face to grow this business."
In this second half of the interview (click here to read the first half, which was published yesterday), Moore also discusses the company's relationships with Japanese publishers, and goes into depth about the firm's strategy for Xbox Live and downloadable content on the Xbox 360.
I know some guy here who's gonna love this news. =)

i must admit the Nintendo(gs) have done good research at the revolution controller, it's very suprising indeed, but this article looks like Peter Moore want's to make some friends on the Japanese market, maybe to (C)ell some more consoles of them, or mybe getting very very very good friends with Nintendo and team up?
just kidding Nintendo ha's delivered great work, and i can't wait to sit on a nice couch, with 3 friends playing on the revolution the flies game BBBBBZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZzzzzzzzzzZZZZ SPLAT! SPLAT SPLATTER!!!
hahaha in the video it's looks so funny!!!
From a strict marketing stand point we could also think that Moore is also kinda supportive towards Nintendo because they think that they are more a direct competition for Sony than for the xbox 360?
As I see it, Microsoft has many chances to win in America and Europe. Although according to Famitsu, the x360 popularity have been boosted from 2% to already impressive 18%, the rest is being shared by Nintendo and Sony, as long as Nintendo pushes back Sony, Microsoft would have more opportunities to knock them out, something like "The enemy of my enemy is my friend".
Just a theory.

Maybe they have a 2% gaining but they still have much work to do to achieve the goal they are searching for in Japan, this doesn't mean Xbox 360 doing bad, maybe some more RPG's can make them get more ground in Japan. I can say to you Microsoft will do just fine in Europe and maybe do good in America aswell. In europe they will do good that's the fact!
Man, there's just no way to hate Nintendo. Whether you are a PS fan or an Xbox fan, you will at least think about getting a Revolution because it looks so gash frikken darn fun!
No matter what kind of hate that MS and Sony drum up in the console war, Nintendo gets nothing but love from me. I might be going to bat for Sony, because I really do like the PS3, but Revolution is my first love.
Lefein, 2 questions just hit my mind:
1. Don't you think that with this revolution controller Nintendo could be limiting themselves to exclusive titles only? I mean, that maybe some AAA games that once were multiplatform now are just gonna leave Nintendo?
2. Do you have any idea of what kind of storage media will the Revolution use?

Nope, they are already talking about making a normal controller add-on. So, you will see all kinds of games for the Revolution. If they get EA aboard, they will do just fine. Expect their first and second party titles to really shine with the new controller, though.
2. Do you have any idea of what kind of storage media will the Revolution use?
Due to the fact that the Revolution won't be using any HD textures, it can get away with using something resembling the DV9. It still remains to be seen what kind of graphics they are going for, but even if they can make games of similar size to the PS2 and XB1 it will be a nice leap forward from the GameCube. I also expect a concerted effort by Nintendo to remain developer-friendly in this aspect.
Again, I'm not expecting an HD-playback style drive from Nintendo. They are going in a different direction. What I am curious about is how they plan on storing downloaded games. Perhaps the Rev will have some kind of HDD? If not, it will be interesting to see what they do with that.
I can help you with that, Nintendo plan on using a 512MB memory card, oddly enough that's way larger than the Xbox 360's memory unit.
But seeing how small games would've been back then i guess it's a good enough size.
Rock on Steroyd! Thanks for the info. I hope that card isnt a rip.. Oh wait, Nintendo is always good on their peripherals 8)

Come on guys! This is like giving your enemy a Trojan Horse, then... BAM! You would be ignorant to conclude Microsoft is doing this for good will. As the end of the article points out, he is only trying to get closer to the Japanese market. His strategy here is to try to make the Japanese assume since they are such "good buddies" with a japanese company, that it might be worth it to buy a 360. That's just desperate! :?
I think he's just sucking up to be honest. You should have seen the reaction Sony's Phil Harrison got when he dismissed the NDS as "gimmicky", Moore apparently appears to appreciate that Nintendo are above reproach amongst hardcore gamers.
Oh man, that sucks. Truth be told, you can pretty much sneak into
everything at GameCity! And we were an open event!
As for an interview - yeah absolutely. Sorry you missed out at the festival.

So I was thinking I would focus the interview around blu-ray. See how many Gigs Haze uses and ask questions about why he thinks other developers are not using the extra space on the PS3. Especially when looking at multiplatform.
Also see if he thinks Blu-ray is required for next gen gaming.
Seb said to ask a few q's about Timesplitters as well. Any ideas on what we should ask?
Hi Rob,
Here are our interview q's. Let me know when you think you should have them completed. Thanks!
1. What are your thoughts on Haze being a system mover for the PlayStation 3? With a slew of multiplatform FPS titles coming, how will Haze (a PS3 exclusive) entice gamers to buy a PS3 over anything else?
2. Do you think that Blu-ray is a necessity for next gen gaming and will developers require Blu-ray size storage for games in the future if they don't already?
3. Why do you think multiplatform developers choose not to utilize the extra storage capacity on the PS3 for their games and add extra content? If the space is there why not use it?
4. How many Gigabytes of space does Haze require?
5. What was the reason behind dropping development on the Xbox 360 and PC?
6. Do you have plans to support Haze further with downloadable content?
7. Will Haze have dedicated servers for multiplayer?
8. Will Haze support clans, buddy lists, and parties? What kind of customizable options will be available for these?
9. Have you hit any technical roofs with the PS3 hardware during development (memory, bandwidth, PPU, SPU, GPU)?
10. How do you guys feel about Bungie copying the Mantel troops helm design?
11. Has your experience working on Haze for the PS3 helped in development and planning for Timesplitters 4?
12. Will Free Radical be using the same technology and game engine used in Haze in Timepsplitters 4?
13. Anything else you'd like to add about Haze or Timesplitters?
Thank you again Rob! Let me know if we can get any new Haze screenshots to go with the interview, and if possible maybe some concept art or goof images of Timesplitters 4.
