So the batteries in the controller died and we put new ones in, now it won't detect the controller!! we've tried re-syncing it with no avail. Any ideas?

Call Nintendo ask them for help, they should replace the controller. If they won't do anything, buy a new controller.

Disconnect the console's power supply for a few seconds then reconnect it.
Well, more details would be useful. Does the controller flash its lights as though trying to sync up with the console? Do you have other controllers, and if so, are they working?
Power the console off completely (hold power button until it turns red). Press A on controller. If it doesn't flash its lights, the batteries are dead or backwards, most likely.
Yeah check it with different battery's and if it don't work call Ninty.

Yea the lights flash as if it's trying to sync up. Checked the batteries, they're the right way.Either the controllers not sending the proper signal or the system isn't accepting the signal for some reason...

unplug the system then plug it back in. I had the sane problem and that is what fixed it for me.
