View Full Version : Hard Coating for PSP and PS3
"Same technology – different application. As many of you know, Sony will be applying a coating to the screen of the PSP in order to protect from everyday use. They will also be using this technology to protect Blu-Ray discs, and the results are amazing.
One of the major disadvantages to going with a non-clamshell design, is that the screen is open to scratches, scuffs, and marks which can make viewing the LCD difficult if enough damage has been done. To remedy this, Sony is using a new technology to protect the screens from such occurrences. Applied as a single layer, it will prevent scratches. When layered, it will withstand steel wool and permanent marker. In fact, the only damage done to the layered coating was with a knife – which is highly unlikely an occurrence (unless you have homicidal tendencies towards your PSP).
Sony will also use the technology to protect Blu-Ray discs, which is why the current version has disregarded the plastic casing of the original prototype."

Fine...don't take my poll...see if I care...cuz I don't...I REALLY REALLY don't...:?
Ok I care... :(
Nice article Munkey. Hopefully this will solve a lot of scratch related disc-read problems in the future.
 Was that a reply??? Woohoo!!!
I hope it does solve all the disc scratch problems. I'm getting tired of my friends ripping my games out of the console and hitting them up against the plastic...and then I have to bust out my Skip Doctor every friggin time. I also enjoy ppl who drop them on the floor. This hard coating seems like it will solve all of that...for the most part.
yeah this will solve many of the scratching problems. I dont really kow if the Gameboy was prone to a scratched screen but i knew that CD's were. I heard about sony making a super hard material to protect the screen and I think its awesome i just never knew that they would transfer the technology to CD's or should i say Blu-Ray. Man Sony is the best thing since... not sliced bread ... but the whole of MAN KIND. :D :D
Well...it's about time that someone finally created a protective coating...and the one that Sony's using is incredibly durable. I wish they would use the same technology on CDs...as long as it doesn't jack up the price. I'm getting tired of lending CDs to friends, only to get them back and having them appear as if they gave it to their cat for a while. Maybe I should just stop lending my CDs? Friends can be unreliable sometimes =(
lol i totally agree what you mean. My friend asked if he could borrow GTA:SA the day i got it. Im like "have you lost your freaking mind?!?!?!?!!? go and buy one damn!!" I cant let that baby be scratched. I would be so furious.
I hate it when I'm at a friends house and I bring my games. They will just rip them out and throw them to the side. It makes me so fricken mad. This looks like it will be great.
Sounds like you need new friends...
Hmmm...what was the point of bringing them if they were gonna rip them out and throw them to the side is what I want to know. :D But anyways, I'm glad that sony came up with this...I was actually quite concerned when I first saw the picture of the PSP, the first thing that came to my mind was "Gee...that'd be easy to scratch." But yay! Now I can sleep peacefully...
actually the first thing to my mind was like a plastic covering that you can replace if it's scratced all the time...because sony is a person who loves to sell perhipals to everyone
Super, high-tech, advanced, 99% scratch-proof coating = better than plastic.
I think its a GREAT idea because i would hate it if i scratch my PSP screen....that would really suck!!! so i really think sony did the right thing.....i mean, y would u want your screen to be scratched...i dont really get this poll...
i dont really get this poll...It was supposed to be for fun. If you notice, all the answers are sarcastic. Gimme a break
why would you scratch it in the first place??? but if its on accedent its a good idea but theres no problem with being to careful
I always used to scratch the crap out of my old handhelds :/ It's inevitable. It had no cover, but neither does the PSP; hence, the protective coating. My Gameboy Advance never had that problem, because it closed, just like the DS. But I think the coating is cooler and seems more high-tech ;)
lol ok... its all good i guess
I think Sony made a smart move. Even I am going to get a PSP! I swear that this is gonna kill gameboy lol.
I truly DISLIKE Nintendo......the Nintendo DS, the Game cube etc. The only thing I liked from Nintendo was the Nintendo 64 but I only got it because I didn’t have enough money to get a PS2 and eventually I DID get a PS2 :D
I said "dislike" because I don’t necessarily hate Nintendo....they're still trying to be a big competitor...
Nintendo was good when i was little but now that im growing up PSP/PC/PS3/PS2 will be my entertainment. Plus tv and other little things.
I think Sony made a smart move. Even I am going to get a PSP! I swear that this is gonna kill gameboy lol.
Please leave the immature fanboy statements to yourself.
This protctive coating is going to save me what could have been buying 3 or 4 psp's. I'm not the best a keeping my stuff in the best of places and my mp3 player will show you that. But man with this on the games too. that will save me from killing my friends to.
I have gone through 3 different people to get to the PR at Pandemic...here is what she said...
I was forwarded your email from my client at Pandemic Studios.
I'm happy to help answer your questions, just send them to my attention.
Also, can you please let me know if you're working against a specific
Looking forward to working with you.
Say you're looking to have an article written by mid-late next week. Send them a good list of questions. Good luck!
I sent an email asking about what all they can say because I want more than just the normal interview everyone's been getting. I want straight up PS3 vs Xbox 360 and all about RSX and Cell and all about the game...so I ahve to hear back before I send the Q's.
I work with Brooke here at Access and am helping you get your questions answered for
PS3 Land. To answer your second question about upcoming titles for PS3 other than
Mercenaries 2, nothing is announced at this time but we'll be sure to keep you
updated. You can always check on the Mercenaries 2 community at Mercs2.com for the
latest news and check out the developer's video blogs.
Regarding your first question about releasing information about PS3, we have not
released any information beyond our initial Mercenaries 2 announcement that is being
developed for PS3. But if you have specific questions pertaining the developing on
the PS3 platform, could you send me some specific questions and I can get them
answered from the Mercs 2 development team via email?
ps3 Wanna be

Subject: Pandemic Interview
Well, here are the questions I came up with, hopefully you can answer
most, if not thats alright. Also, the more detail or addition to the
questions works too. :)
1. How long has Pandemic been around, how did it get started?
2. What are some of the games that Pandemic has under their belt?
3. How many staffers make up the company?
4. Is Pandemic hiring, if so, what do you guys typically look for in a
5. What platforms has/will Pandemic develop games for?
1. Mercenaries 2 is the current title that is in the works, recently
is reporting that Merc2 is no longer PS3 exclusive. Is it true? Why?
2. Are there currently any other games in development other than
3. Now the first Mercenaries title features some awesome explosions and
cool viechle combat, will we see the same but vastly improved things for
4. What are going to be some of the newest features or gameplay elements
Mercenaries 2 will have?
5. Will there be multiplayer in Merc2?
6. What is the best thing about next gen consoles, more specifically the
PS3, that enables great game development?
7. If Pandemic is working on multiplatform versions of Merc2, how does
PS3 differ from the Xbox 360 in terms of running the games elements and
shear power of the system itself? Or is there any difference at all?
8. Is the PS3 hard to develop for? Are there enough tools around that
enable you to harness most of the PS3's power?
9. How is Mercenaries 2 be using the PS3 to be best effective?
10. What is the basic storyline behind Mercenaries 2?
11. How many characters will be included to play as? Any background
12. What new or old weapons will we see in the game?
13. Will Merc2 feature 1080p?
14. Does Pandemic plan on using the PS3's tilt controller feature? Were
you shocked by Sony's announcement at E3 to feature it?
1. What caused Pandemic to bring thier game multiplatform instead of
keeping exclusive to the PS3?
2. How do you feel about the price of the PS3? Value, tech, ect.
3. How do you feel about Sony's strategy the past few conventions, do
feel they are lacking and need to step it up, or do you think the are
4. Where do you see Microsoft taking the Xbox 360? Do you see them
gaining/passing Sony in the console market?
5. Has Pandemic heard of these two other consoles, the EVO:Phase One and
Inifinium Labs The Phantom? Does Pandemic have any plans perhaps to go
see what they offer?
6. What about Nintendo Wii? Any plans to bring any games to the console?
1. If you would like to add anything else about Mercenaries 2 that would
be great. Like for example: viechles, multiplayer features, how the PS3
and Xbox will run multiplayer (if any), ect.
Thank you so much for doing this and I will send you the link once the
article goes live. In terms of when I need it back, anytime next week
work. Also, do you think perhaps PS3Land.com could get some exclusive
images or perhaps a new video of Mercenaries 2? That would be awesome!
Once again thank you, and I can't wait to hear back from ya!
My co-worker Angella (copied on this email), is helping to answer your
questions and she'll get back to you as soon as possible.
She is out of office until Monday so unfortunately we won't be able to
get back to you until then.
Thanks for your patience.
new email from two days ago:
Sorry I haven't responded yet. I need to do some research for your questions and ask
different people and that's why they're taking so long! My apologies but just wanted
to let you know it's something I'm def. working on.
