Ive been looking around for advice but i cant seem to find any lol.
So im using this as a last ditch effort.
I installed vista and man its sweet, i dont care if its a OS X rob but its good, anyways.
it runs like a dream, UNLESS! i load steam and start to download something, it just locks up. It will let me surf the net, but on certain webpages, say youtube, if im trying to stream a big file, it just locks up.
I built a whole new comp for this, ive tested the hard drive, and its fine, i did memtest and it seems fine.
My setup is:
Abit IN9 Max 32 680i mobo, only using 570/580/590? vista drivers?
conroe duo core E6600
2 gig of corsair dominator
Xfi fatality with front bay (Beta driver)
dvd writer
dvd drive
floppy
XFX 8800 gtx (Forceware 100.65 driver)
730 watt hiper power psu
any one suffering from similar problems? Do i just ned to wait for updates

Without being there with you, I could only guess right now that your system is probably fine. I highly doubt there is a problem with the hardware. While I know my share on computers, I'm definately not the biggest Vista nut on this forum and wont pretend to be. Perhaps someone knows more. My guess...maybe MS just need to path the OS or they need something equal to that of a service pack like in XP.

Have you tried some other drivers for that Videocard?
Apparently there are some issues with nVidia drivers under Vista.

no not tried any other video drivers. you think it could be that? it seems like a network problem more than anything. THanks for help though

Sounds like a PSU problem
Steam runs fine on my vista pc.

Sounds like a PSU problem
You honestly think ti could be psu problem, BECUASE! i had to send my psu and gpu back to my supplier becuase my gpu makes a zingin noise when under load in 3d apps. they said it was fine and didnt replace it though!
I dont get what it could be, ive been running it today with no issues at all, it might just be some settings i have wrong in steam. Like vista runs with no issues, nothing, no locking up, but after 2 minutes in steam, of downloading, it just locks. HD LED goes off and nothing, whole system grinds to a hault.
But if its a PSU problem that could answer allot, as XFX thought my psu was gfaulty when i reported the zinging! Thanks for all the help though!
I cant reeally afford a new psu! It should have a warrenty but www.scan.co.uk are being gay and said there were no problems with my hardware!

I can see that you are running an SLI setup. The problem you may be having may be all driver related. Vista is NOT ready for primetime. In fact most Nvidia and SLI drivers aren't even close to being ready for Vista. I'd say if at all possible, waitoff and use XP for a little until Vist comes out with some real driver support or Nvidia does. Without being at the actual PC it's impossible to troubleshoot your problem...but this is definitely a culprit.

IOm not running dual 8800gtx, just a single card, I have a dual boot system with xp on one hard drive and vista on another, so its not like im crippled. I also think its a driver problem, I hope it is anyway, becuase i dont mind waiting, but i cant be bothered pulling my hardware out and sending it off like i had to last week, No pc for 10 days is a pain, then they said there was nothing wrong anyway lol.
So yeh, only one card running, but it could be the nvidia drivers. I hope it is, i dont get why it would effect netwroking though, but it might not be networking maybe its just something stressing the system. It seems to run fine if im not downloading anything etc. But i did have it hang on me this morening on the password screen, for no reason.
Anyway, thanks for all the help guys!
Any one with anything else to add is much appreciated. Once again thanks,

I hate you, you have an XFX 8800 GTX...:(
My take on this is the Vista's cache setting are set too low, or the processor is due for an update. Or maybe you need to clean your temporary folders.
It's definitely not RAM, you have 2 GBs and Corsair is some of the best. (Low Latency I assume)
But one thing I am sure of is that it's not hardware-related, otherwise your PSU would've tweaked a while ago, but as always the GPU is the exception, what with the beta drivers and all. Just to be sure, if you are able to run XP just fine as opposed to Vista, then you already know the answer to your question.

coool/ yeh xp is running a dream with no problems at all. Not one problemo!
The only thing is is my vista is running on a completely different hard drive i got 2 WD cavier 320 gigs. One with xp on the other with vista on. I did a hard drive test and it passed fine, so i dont think its that. I probs just gonna have to play the waiting game :D
thanks for all the help though guys. to fantasy, Thx :D the XFX 8800 GTX is a beast, i love it. Was gonna wait for the r600 but couldnt be bothered, not for a few fps more and a stupid price/Energy tag. anyway hope you get one soon, they are defo worth it. Not come across a game ive had a single drop under 60 fps yet, thats with full everything 16xAA and 16x AF so we will see :D it runs well over 200 fps average on every ingame benchmark ive run and around 80 fps minimum. Its sweeeet!
