View Full Version : PS2 games on the PSN
Is there any chance of any PS2 games ending up on the Playstation Store?
I'll come clean, I'm getting a PS3 in HK, and as faf as I know there are no region 3 PS2 games in english - anyway, the PAL PS3 doesn't seem to be particularly backward compatible - but this means I won't be playing retail PS2 discs on my PS3.
But there are some games like FFXII, GoW I&II, Ico and SotC and MGS3 that I want to play so bad - might I ever be able to pay and download them?
EDIT: Btw does anyone know if any of the games I just mentioned are available in region 3 with english language - either subtitles or voice overs etc.?

umm... if my memory serves me correctly, theres supposed to be about 1000 ps2 games available for download at the time of the euro launch. dont know how much they will cost, probably around $10-$15.
There will not be any PS2 titles on the PSN at EU launch. There probably won't be any til the PS2 is dead.

They won't be available for download. PS3 will have over 1000 PS2 games that work with the software emulation at launch. They won't be downloadable. You have to have the original copies of the PS2 games you want to play.

It's 1000 PS2 games that'll be compatible with the euro PS3, cause it's using software emulation instead of hardware (the US and Jap version use hardware).
But back to the point of the post, currently Sony have said nothing about PS2 games coming to PS store. Personnally I think they will eventually but not for at least 2 years because they are undoubtably much much larger than PS1 games, ergo Sony needs to get storage space (both digital and locational - to house the digital storage), the servers, the bandwidth and so on.. it takes time and a lot of money, so they're probably going to wait to see if there is indeed demand for this feature.
And damn I hope there is!! Downloading several GB's will take a lot of time, but hell it'll be worth it!
I think the internet is already at the stage where people are willing and able to download multiple GB files. Direct2Drive and Steam are very successful, and look at what people are willing to put up with torrents.
Still, there's only a reason to download PS2 games if you have imported a PS3, I guess, and Sony aren't going to be to concerned about making those (us) customers happy.
So, I guess I'll have to find region 3 games with english translations, or english subtitles.
Does anyone know if the Asian copy of Ico or Shadow of the Colossus have english subs? I don't know a whole lot about those games, is it even necessery to have english language in them, ie. is there even any voice acting or dialogue?

i dont see the point in this why would you buy a playstion 3 just to download ps2 games it makes no since you should be buying a ps3 to play ps3 games. To be honest i wouldnt really care if ps2 games went up for sale on the Playstation network.
But dude... Shadow of the Colossus... I've never played it.
I just found out that HK PS3s are (if I am wrong, please correct me) able to play Japanese PS3 games, due to both being NTSC J in PS2 region, so therefore...

just pick up a 200 dollar ps2 or use your old one
'
or dont import
i dont see why sony should accomidate you just cause you cant wait or dont like the fact that very few games wont work on your ps3
it isnt really there problem and there is a reason things are released in different regions

BACK ON TOPIC: I believe Sony said a while back that PS2 demos would eventually be able to be downloaded via the PSN, but full titles are probably a long ways off.
Wish PS2 demos would come sooner rather than later though.
