The Cell's vicious, we tell you, vicious. Vicious Cycle's middleware engine, Vicious Engine, has recently been licensed by Sony as part of the family of PlayStation 3 Tools and Middleware License Program. This makes Vicious four-for-four: besides the PS3, Vicious is also authorized for use with Wii and Xbox 360 SDKs, as well as the PSP.

(Vicious Engine also runs on PS2 and PC, but no PR for the PC yet. No PR for the PSP either, but hey, with Dead Head Fred in development, why would Vicious be locked out of the handheld?)

Okay, we're not going to make that comparison with Unreal Engine. In an interview with Gamasutra we covered earlier, they revealed that Vicious Engine has a different approach compared to Epic Games' middleware offering. Vicious is more general, not just limited to maxing out FPS/TPS gameplay, which would see the middleware being used in a variety of IP genres. Vicious is also promoting their engine as an easy-to-use, fully supported middleware for indie developers wishing to try and break into any of the now approved console SDKs that will run Vicious Engine.

I just hope it's not as overused a unreal 3. This could be more widespread than I know of, but with all of the different games who use havoc or unreal or whatever imo it takes away from games being truly unique, not to say I wouldn't buy a game built around these I just want good variety.

Hey I know if I was a game developer, I would want the largest possible market for my product. If the Vicious Engine is up to it's snuff, it sounds like a real winner. As long as the engine is using a common API on top of controller optimized code. I mean you wouldn't want to be limited to the lowest common denomenator for the platforms you plan on supporting.

The more tools the better. Less and less reasons for PS3 development to bee too expensive for more devhouses.

i notice that most of the tools available on the PS3 are also available on the xbox360 and the wii...i'm guessing this would make porting the games easier and hence we'll probably see a lot of multi-platform games this generation...

It sounds interesting... but the one engine I have my eye on is the frostbite engine. The frostbite engine is the one that Brothers in Arms uses. The one that enables destructible environments. This one sounds cool, too. I can't wait for Unreal Engine 4... does anyone have news on that? I heard Epic's on it.

They still have their ninjas working on UT3 for the PS3 because they want to have a good platform running on the PS3 to sell middleware to more companies based off that.

After the PS3 optimization process for UE3 is finished then they will go full bore on UE4.. A fly on the wall told me ;)
