UGH!

I scrapped and saved the $600 it takes to buy a 60GB PS3 with the wireless card.

So, I get it home, and I love it. However, it doesn't work with my router... I have a Linksys WRT54GX4. I've read through a few other posts, and for whatever reason, this router doesn't like the PS3.

Okay, I think, no big deal. I've got a D-Link DI-624 in the basement not being used...

So, I fetch that out of the basement, and start updating the firmware. However, about ten minutes into the setup, the thing gives out a smell of burning electronics, and a large POOF of white smoke emerges from the router. For those of you who don't know: Routers run on white smoke. If the white smoke escapes, the router stops routing.

DANG! Okay, no big deal. I'll buy a new router. I search and find that the DGL-4300 has received critical acclaim for its ability to prioritize gaming packets. I'll buy that!

Alas, New Egg tells me my debit card was declined. How is this possible?!?! I know I have TONS of money in the bank. OH: It's possible because my employer's last paycheck to me BOUNCED! Yeah, my boss floated a rubber check to me. So I have negative amounts of money in MY account now. :(

Sounds like a rough day. If it's any consolation, PSN is down today.

Did you install the software for the new router correctly? Also go into the router settings an make sure ou have the wireless turned on. I have the same LInksys router and have no problems with it.

Yeah, my Linksys has all the new firmware its settings should be golden. I setup networks for a living (at least...when I'm ACTUALLY getting paid I set them up for a living) so I know my settings should be good.

UPnP is turned on, but the PS3 fails the UPnP test 98.9% of the time. I've tried everything from putting the PS3 in a DMZ to turning off wireless encryption. The only thing I've not tried is a wired connection, but that isn't feasible with my home setup (which is one reason I went with the more expensive PS3).

WOO HOO! So, today, I decided to make by bad day from yesterday go Bye-Bye. I picked up an el-Cheapo $35 router from Walmart and lo and behold: The connection works PERFECT now. :P

Congrats on the cheap, but faithfully working router! Have fun with your new PS3! I hope you picked up Motorstorm so I may see you online and you can run me off a cliff to release some of that built up rage inside of you  You know you want to, hehehe...

LOL if I had someone to play against, maybe I'd go buy it. :) Is it any good online?

um you set up networks for a living but you didn't know that upnp is unecessary? I disable it on purpose in my router as it's a security risk.

The WRT54Gx4 router didn't work with the PS3...with or without UPnP. It is an issue with the router itself.

There are several others having this issue (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=754875&page=1).
