Ok,my router is to far away from the ps3 so we could not use the ethernet cable. We used a regular Data cable(The blue kind).Every time we test the connection it says it cant find the IP adress. Is there a difference between the ps3 ethernet cable and the kind im using?

I think u can only use a ethernet cable with PS3. If u got a wireless router. Y not just get a wireless ethernet client for the PS3.

If your PS3 cannot find the IP address, I'd say you havent registered your playstation with your service provider. They usually allow 2-3 MAC addresses per household for residential use. call your ISP and give them your PS3 MAC address, then you should be good to go.

Is the cable you are using a "Crossover" cable?

If so, then that is most likely why it isn't working. I couldn't explain why very quickly, and it doesn't matter anyway. Looks like you might either need a new, longer ethernet cable, or you have to do some arranging to make everything connect.

i would have to agree with Grinchy on this one. The blue cable you're using is probably a crossover cat5 cable, not a true "ethernet" cable. I'd suggest swapping it out with one of the ones that connect another computer on the router and see if that works. If it does, then its the cable.

we could not use the ethernet cable. We used a regular Data cable(The blue kind). After re-reading your post I have a potentially stupid question to ask, just to cover all of the bases. My DSL+wifi router came with a blue usb cable for setup. You state that you can't use the "ethernet cable" so you used the "data cable". I just want to make sure that you're not trying to connect with the usb cable and are, in fact utilizing the network port on the BACK of the PS3. Okay, again, sorry if its a stupid/obvious question, but you never know! :)

Ps3's a patch cable? isnt it an ethernet cable? or are they the same thing.

I'm pretty sure you can walk out somewhere to a computer store or something and get like a hundred feet worth of ethernet for cheap. I have 2 50+ feet cables going around the first floor of the house for my ps3 and another computer... even though I have wireless router =D

All u need is an ethernet cable. PS3 does not work with blue data cable.

Same thing.

It all depends on what you mean by "blue data cable"
Is it an ethernet cable? USB cable? Phone cable?

I can get you an ethernet cable in about whatever color you want so the color dosnt help.

What kinds of ends does it have?

Well we put the ends on ourselves but its the wire used in almost all computers.Pretty sure its Cat5.

Uh..Cat5 has more than one physical cable inside of it, you can't just "put on the ends" you have to line up each wire in the correct order...

Yeah me and my dad lined up the wires the same way they were lined up on the Cat6 Ps3 wire.Still didnt seem to work.On sonys website it said not to use residential cable or telephone wire.Would Cat5 fall under that category?

my brother in-law tried the same thing when they had LAN parties with Xboxes. It wouldn't work, even though the wires were all lined up properly.

Try putting the PS3 by your PC and hooking it up with a regular CAT5 cable that already has ends on it. If it works then the cable you made is the problem.

Ok,and if the connection is working properly the green light should be flashing next to the LAN port correct?

Well. if the connection is working properly the PS3 will tell you after it runs all the tests.

No, a Cat5 is fine.

My guess is that you have a cable issue.
Try using a known good cable, or go buy one that already has ends on it.

for what its worth, I've had zero problems with the cable that I crimped together myself, so it does work fine as long as the cable is well made. There are a bunch of things that can go wrong like having the colored wires out of order of not having the metal tabs punch through the wire all the way. One common mistake when making cat5 cables is people will try and strip the colored insulation from the individual strands. Don't do that. Just strip enough of the outer sheath to fit the connector on, line up/straighten your colored wires, trim them flat so they're all the same length, and push on the connector. The wires will need to go all the way to the back of the connector, and in their own "track". Only once you're sure everything is lined up should you crimp them down.

Ok,new problem lol.Instead of fiddling around with Cat5 wire my dad brought home some Cat6 wire the same used in the ps3 ethernet cable.I plugged it in and the light on the back is blinking this time. But it still says there is no ethernet cable connected and cant obtain IP adress.

Turd Fergueson had this this problem a while back. download the latest update to a flash drive, run the update and try it again. this worked for me. I was so frustrated but i got mine to work. cat 5/6/50 doesnt matter. just make sure you follow the directions of saving it on the drive.

Do this in Memory of me.

take the cable you just made and use it on a computer in your house. If it works there then you can rule out a cable problem and go from there
