View Full Version : 360 In Japan: 23.9% wants a Xbox 360.
New survey reveals Xbox 360 on the up - if only slightly - in the East, but PS3 and Revolution currently more popular
16:03 Japanese magazine Famitsu has conducted a new survey questioning 2,000 videogame fans on their likes and dislikes in the next-gen world. Microsoft will no doubt be pleased to see interest in Xbox 360 has increased, although probably not as pleased as Nintendo as Revolution is running second in the Japanese videogamer popularity stakes.
And neither will likely be as chuffed as Sony as, if we're to take the survey sample as representative of Japan's entire videogames playing fraternity, PS3 is way, way out in front.
According to the results of the survey, 23.9% of people questioned expressed an interest in acquiring Xbox 360 (sorry if this sounds a little like a Whiskers advert), a similar survey previously revealing a 22% interest - so a teeny, tiny increase for Microsoft's next-gen machine there. Meanwhile, 36% of people questioned revealed that they'll most certainly be purchasing Nintendo's Revolution and an impressive 63.2% said they definitely want to buy Sony's PS3.
Survey participants were also questioned on Xbox 360 game interest, Japanese gamers obviously big fans of 'blessed' women in beat-'em-ups as Team Ninja's Dead or Alive 4 came out on top.

The last poll was dismissed because people said no poll wasn held.
Well, there you go, the 360 keeps getting stronger in Japan.
Amazing, considering the almost invisible presence of its predecesor.
MS did a good job. What is this, like twice as much support already? It would be interesting to see if this is enough to keep the Japanese developers on board next-gen.

Yeah so i guess that the 23% of all the japanize consumers may buy the new x-box,now we must wait and see if it turns to be true.

i wonder how many americans where interested in xbox at launch it wasnt many i can say that. how fast did it grow? i see the same thing happening here.
Wow big deal 23 % 1 month from launch with the 2 other console showing bugger all and still ahead whoopty doo.
Considering that it's Japan, and that the local press over there predicted a max of 10% of marketshare if they were lucky, yes, it is a BIG deal.

I've told them but they choose not to listen  They choose to consider it a fact, but the fact is that the x-box sales were about 5%(?) better wait to see the sales before you cheer, you cant possibly compare the final sales with a poll of 2000 people....BTW here is a similar thread in the ps3 section.

Well, consider that most polls that are used only take about 500 - 1000 people.
The margin of error on this one, based on all the tactics used in polling, is probably around 3- 5%.
Still, even if you remove 5%, consider that the original Xbox only sold 0.8% marketshare in Japan and the Xbox WorldWide only took about 23%, this is a big deal if accurate (time will tell).

Ok now you are talking  Don't know how accurate polls are,but we must consider the fact that sony "cards" are not yet shown, the poll may easily change if something good arise from sony.

I'm sure you can tell me siren who the poll targeted also. The site said it was random, but walking up to a 80 year old woman about this will only give you a unresponsive result. Polls arn't accurate i never trust them. I'm not attacking the 360 on this front but my ruling stands for PS3 stats as well. Nothing is fixed, and taking this poll seriously will only force more rumers. Eventaully someone is bound to interpret this as fact and start trolling.

Agreed, we don't know the demographics they used. But one thing I did like about the poll is the apparent wording of the answers. Unlike a lot of polls, they were very unbiased.
One thing is though, no matter how much we may dislike polls in general, if conducted properly they can actually be very informative.

Actually, I'm fairly certain it took 4% in Japan, and that the 23% "worldwide" was only for regions in which the Xbox was available, (which means like no Africa).

4% in East Asia, but not Japan. In Japan they only managed to sell about 350,000 systems total over the life of the Xbox.
This is compared with about 17 Million PS2s and 5 Million GCs.
So I was off, they were about 1.6%. Still not large by any stretch in comparison to their competiton.
Polls are only as good as the sample population, if you stood outside a game arcade and asked the first 2000 people who came in what they thought you'd get a different answer than if you just randomly called houses. At best polls give a rough idea of general trends, and unless they give you the demographic and parameters have no meaning at all.
But what's most important here is this poll is based on incomplete data, if they did this poll a year after all three consoles where out would we see different results? If they did this poll a month before PS3 was to come out would they get different answers? Of course they would.
If in a year 360 has 23% of the japanese sales then I'll buy that this poll have merit. By the same account I'll wait a year to see if PS3 has 63%.

Well considering people were making a huge hoopla over a 22% mark in an earlier poll from Famitsu, pre TGS, I consider this a miserable failure.
A 1% increase in the poll even considering the massive media blitz from Microsoft and all the work to make it more appealing to the Japanese gamers? 23% is not very good at all considering the number pre-TGS was 22%.
Just goes to show that even though in comparison little has been shown of the PS3 that Microsoft will have an incredibly difficult road trying to steal japanese gamers away from Sony and Nintendo. I have a feeling Microsoft could actually do worse this time around considering how strong both Nintendo and Sony will be this generation in comparison.
MS can't get any worse than how they did with the Xbox.
But most Japaneese people are eager for Xbox 360 games coming out in 2 years time.
the only reason Nintendo is getting as much highe marks than Xbox 360 is because of the back catalog of Ninty games.
Wonder how the nature of the polls would go if Sony actually announced something?

Didn't Microsoft say polls are useless? Not to mention the fact, the only thing that is different is that the Xbox 360 gained less than 6% since the Famitsu poll held in May.
Here we go again, support support, honestly who cares?
We all know damn well that the Japanese will buy the Japanese consoles and that the Americans will buy the American console, I'm an Australian and I'm getting both.

Well 2-23% of the marketshare is alot. Microsoft must be doing something right.
Do any of you live in Japan? No? Then why do you care?
The last thing I'm going to be thinking to myself while playing some Kameo is "Dang, this game would be much more fun if more Japanese peeps would have bought 360's."
I randomly thought of this while writing up my Smackdown Vs Raw review, but I thought we could have a day each month or every other week where our readers and members can have a chance to play online with the PSU staff.
Pretty much we could announce it a week before and everyone on the staff who is willing to participate could mention what games that they have and are willing to play online. For example I have Resistance and Rock Band so in the posted article you could, put something like:
PSU Staff Participants
Phil Cory: PSU Job Role Here
Games: Rock Band, Resistance Fall of Man
PSN ID: NameTaken33
and have whoever wants to play with us send us game invites. I think this will allow us to connect more with our fanbase and show them that hey, we are gamers too.

I'm not into online gaming at all to be honest, but if we ever have Tekken 5 in this, then that is one game I simply must take part in online. Been itching to take Kazuya against someone else other than my mates!
Still, a good idea either way, Phil.

I think starting this off with COD4 would be a great idea, as it's a fantastic game that I'm sure most of our members and we own.
I don't own it for PS3, but I can easily get my room-mate who works at gamecrazy to get me a copy for a day.

Excellent suggestion for starting with COD4. UT3 should be added to the list as well. It is a great game in my opinion and one of the top 5 multi-player games out there for PS3 at the moment.
