i was checking insomniac newsletter (the old march one) and while i was reading i came across this :
There is some exciting unannounced Insomniac news coming in April, so keep checking back here and don’t miss out on one of the most rewarding projects we’ve had a chance to be a part of in our company’s history. Sorry, gotta keep that one secret for now…
That’s all for this month’s edition of the Buzz, but remember to check back throughout this month for new screens of Ratchet & Clank Future, our new podcasts, as well as info on our big project!source (http://www.insomniacgames.com/community/buzz_full.php?bzid=33) (i think you have to be a member to view the page)
of course it has nothing to do with ratchet and clank!
so what could this project be?

probably a playstation network title they've been working on

Maybe they are referring to a new JAK game? or a Daxter 2 for the PSP? they don't specify the system they are developing it for? it's a rewarding project so probably it is a game with a lot of buzz around it?

Hopefully Insomniac will be fully prevalent in texture streaming by the time they release their next project. Resistance was notably devoid of texture streaming (hence it's slight visual inferiority to Gears), but once they nail that plus a couple of other new techniques, they should be able to really showcase some of the PS3 as-yet untapped powers.

R: FOM, Ratchet and Clank, SPYRO, Disruptor.
i think its SPYRO the dragon, a new platformer

i wonder if the trailer of Rachet and Clank that was released was a build that had texture streaming impemented. the trailer looked awesome dont get me wrong, but textures were flat for the most part.

Should be ineresting. I haven't played a platformer for years, but the Ratchet and Clank series and the older Spyro games were fun (well, Spyro was terrible after the second one). Still, I'm hoping for a nice looking version of Resistance, especially if they get the same kind of quality GoW has.
I'm thinking PSN game either R&C or Spyro hell it might be new IP and that would be kool also but PSN game seems likely
R&C mmorpg? I'll be Captn Quark any day!

"for new screens of Ratchet & Clank Future" this was about the psp version of R&C and this new big projekt was the showing of the R&C tools of destruction trailer....for ps3
so this is the new thing, nothing else will show up anytime soon from insomniac... well they really sould make resistance 2 as soon as posible...great game!

I bet in a PSN downloadable game. Insomniac isn't a huge company. They are working on Resistance updates and Racthet PS3. They don't have resources for another AAA project.
dannyphantom105
04-04-2007, 14:35
It could just be an announcement for resistance, though they cant go full out on that game until ratchet and clank is done, so its either a new IP or i thinnk a resistance 2 announcement.
Probably a PSN game. There is an outside chance that they may be further along on a Resistance sequel than we think, but I doubt that as it's been announced already.

I think it will be some kind of downloadable PSN game. The guy who made up the '10 reasons why the PS3 will win' praised Little Big Planet because he said Insomniac had been brainstorming ways to make a game driven by user created content. He said they're always looking for the 'the next big thing' so maybe they will announce a game, probably in a different genre than Little Big Planet, but one that relies on user created content.

Resistance 2 is already confirm
It's some kind of promotional event. They mentioned it in the first Full Moon podcast. I'm paraphrasing here:
"The largest promotional opportunity Insomniac's ever been a part of."
"It involves the efforts of the entire company."
sorry for been ignorant, but what is IP?
I believe it stands for "intellectual property."
In law, intellectual property (IP) is an umbrella term for various legal entitlements which attach to certain names, written and recorded media, and inventions. The holders of these legal entitlements are generally entitled to exercise various exclusive rights in relation to the subject matter of the IP. The term intellectual property reflects the idea that this subject matter is the product of the mind or the intellect, though the term is a matter of some controversy.
PS3World

I believe it stands for "intellectual property."
So in human words it means..........................
I wish it where a fully blown Captain Quark Platform adventure on PSN like they did in R&C 3, that would be the coolest thing ever, that said it doesn't sound anything like that.
Perhaps they are developing middleware for the PS3 or helping with the development of EDGE?
So in human words it means..........................
Code, computer code. Software development that they own the rights to because it was developed via their "intellectual property", otherwise known as brains.
My guess is some inovative PSN download.

probably a playstation network title they've been working on
Yup. :)
Think about it. Think about the way they worded it. They make it sound like they are the guy at the office that goes and gets the coffee for everyone and the CEO of the company just asked him to go sleep with his wife.(analogy)
They gotta be doing something super cool for Sony on the side, and my guess is a new IP/PSN title. They did say that they would be expanding their horizons and taking on more IPs, so naturally Resistance and R&C aren't going to be the only game series they do for nextgen.
I can't wait to hear what it is, but I hope they just announce it at least before my birthday! I won't be on the forums much around then.... :(
I doubt it'll be a new IP, as they just came out with Resistance. The only way I see it being a new IP is if it's a PSN game.
Maybe they are referring to a new JAK game? or a Daxter 2 for the PSP? they don't specify the system they are developing it for? it's a rewarding project so probably it is a game with a lot of buzz around it?
They don't make Jak and Daxter, you're thinking of Ready at Dawn.
It'll either be a PSN multiplayer game, or a PSN user content created game with some co-op. Spyro is dead for this company and they no longer have the rights to it. They said they reached the limit for those games. Hard to come up with something new when Spyro doesn't have any arms. LOL

I doubt it, but if they did team up with Naughty Dog then you'd have one hell of a game for PS3. I also doubt that it is a game for PSN because they say they are working on an established franchise which could only mean the R&C franchise.

04-04-2007, 16:09
They have been saying they were going to be working on an PSN game so that could be it. Which would be great. That's where I'm going for. a new ps3 title not so much right now. Unless they plan to work on R&C and the new project at the same time O.o and release the secret next year but that doesn't sound right.
Spyro PSN game! That would be sick, even though I'd like them to make a full blown Spyro game with all the next gen bells and whistles! :D

Yeah they said they wanted to do a PSN game so it's probably that or some sort of PS3 Engine enhancement you guys got it.
I agree, I want them to take there time and polish up the next one make it even better than the first. I just hope that it wont turn out to be a halo2.
Being that it's an unannounced project, I'm doubting it's RFOM 2 as that's already been announced. But if it is RFOM 2 it doesn't mean it's coming out in April, it would just mean that they'd be putting more details out about it and whatnot. They wouldn't necessarily have to rush it out there. I can guarantee you it'll be at least a year from the launch of RFOM until we see a sequel. I'm thinking probably Spring of 2008.
I'm still leaning towards the PSN thing, unless they're possibly teaming up with another dev house for a new project.

I don't think it's a new game for the PSN or anything else. Something about the way he says "we've had a chance to be a part of" makes me think they are working on something with Sony or other developers that will add enhanced functionality to the PS3. Either that or because it's so rewarding they made a game that features a kid from the Make A Wish Foundation as a character in a new resistance level. ;)

So in human words it means..........................
intellectual property
Seriously though, it's an original idea for a game. More specifically, Metal Gear is an IP. Metal Gear 2, 3, & 4 are all different versions of this IP. Every original game, and it's sequels and different versions, is an IP.
Definately a new IP, you dont say those kinds of things about sequels.
So in human words it means..........................
The rights to an idea and/or physical invention and all that's in between that has to do with this idea/invention.

Disruptor, wouldnt be far fetched since they can use Resistance engine and modify it and it would be a good thing for them to make Resistance 2 more and more perfect.

Finally someone that made sense to what Insomniac said.
"one of the most rewarding projects we’ve had a chance to be a part of in our company’s history."
Meaning their are not creating a new IP, its something big that they are contributing help on. A HUGE game? probably... or it could be middleware, and/or better development tools, 'cause thats huge. Especially if SCE has created [or is upto] a middleware tool better than the Unreal Engine.
"as well as info on our big project!"
That also can't be a new IP... its probably Ratchet and Clank announcement... maybe if they said "...on a big project!" it could've meant a new IP.
bet it is a compleatly new series that combines jak and ratchet into one massive super thing
If Insominiac and Naughty Dog teamed up it would be great. Its probably a PSN game.

One of my jobs at Insomniac is to try to come up with “the next big thing.” This is something everyone at Insomniac does......[edit].......Over the last couple years, many of us at Insomniac have come up with lots of different ideas on how to make such a system for consoles. So when Little Big Planet was announced I felt like Orville Wright tinkering on a bicycle-powered balsa wood plane as a learjet suddenly flew overhead.i think they are doing something with Home. or little big planet, i think sony set them up to help in one of those project

Nah I doubt it, Home and LBP are huge, yes. But Media Molecule, and SCE got those two things under their grasp, why the hell will SCE get help from Insomniac? I think Insomniac is working on something different. Their very talentent developers and they could really help out on something different than just games...
People are stupid to think that their working on a PSN game... Wtf? A PSN game is something HUGE?! ... Plz... Insomniac is going to be really helping Sony (as a company) out by creating something big and unique, I doubt a game would do that. I think its a middleware or a great development tool...
Sony should debunk PSP and release an Insomniac Handheld.
deadsoul (http://www.ps3forums.com/member.php?u=26940) pretty much got it, it's something for LBP or Home.
-.- Why would you think its LBP or Home? You think Media Molecule can't do LBP on its own? Or do you think Insomniac has been a part of Home for the last two years that they claimed was in development? Its not LBP or Home...
Guys a PSN game is probably not one of the most rewarding experiences in insomniacs life.
Agreed. Also, note that they say this:
...and don’t miss out on one of the most rewarding projects we’ve had a chance to be a part of in our company’s history.
I'm guessing it'll be a collaboration with another Sony developer... probably for a new IP.
All I know is, the engine in Resistance didn't have texture streaming but Ratchet and Clank will. It seems to me that these guys are hanging in there with the first party developers from a technology aspect. Don't be at all surprised if Sony approached these guys for a little bit of insight on PS3 development. Genji was a miserable flop but Resistance was a million seller. These guys know how to make a game, that much is pretty much unarguable. Making a good game takes more than just good technical skills, but also requires excellent management skills and being able to handle development from a back- end aspect as well.
All of this takes a lot of work, skill, and dedication. Obviously, Insomniac can't devote their development team to every title maker out there, but they can certainly share their expertise on exploiting the PS3 hardware and team performance tooling if the price is right. This could turn out to be something that's not only good for Insomniac but for the entire industry if it is what I think it is. If these guys were working on Edge, then I see good things to come for gamers and game makers. If even a sliver of their quality can be handed down to struggling devs, then the PS3 will be well on it's way to living up to its promises.

If you have played both games, you would know Genji beats Resistance's graphics hands down.
The camera is what was awful about Genji. Nothing else is bad about it, comparable to Onimusha.
So what would Sony ask for help with? Camera work and presentation?
Well Resistance is an FPS so camera work is a mute point.
Resistance sold a million because it was a shooter and was hyped, plain and simple.
Genji caught flack from xbots and media looking to rag on PS3. They never even attempted to give the game a chance.
Did you notice they didn't do the same to Ninety Nine Nights? A very boring repetitive hack 'n slash.
So in human words it means..........................
A franchise.
I don't think it will be a new franchise, because it looks like Insomniac are gearing up for a game-a-year routine, alternating between Ratchet and Resistance.
Which is a great idea for them.
A new IP would push that to a 3 year cycle, putting two years between each Ratchet game.
And with Resistance 2 next year, we're not going to see an announcement this April for a game due out in 2008. I hope.
More likely an MMO made in conjunction with another studio (Sony 1st party) or a PSN game. Given they regard this as their most ambitious project to date, I'd say a PSN game was less likely.
Any idea when we'll find out exactly?

anyway its not resistance add ons they have a couple of news maps thats it.
whatever is Insomniac is GOOD.
Did you notice they didn't do the same to Ninety Nine Nights? A very boring repetitive hack 'n slash.
Oh, I won't really argue on that point. All things green and X have been a get-out-of-shennanigans-free pass and all that, but I also think you aren't giving Resistence enough credit for what it is.
Remember, a lot of developers have been complaining that the PS3 gums up their development and have been pointing the finger at the hardware for some of their games issues. Meanwhile RFOM, a launch game, has been shining on the system and ALSO delivers a fantastic online MP experience (need I remind you of Valve's trepidation about PSN?)! It's too easy to dismiss RFOM as "just a shooter" but it is clearly an early look into exactly what Sony wants to accomplish with the PS3! On the back-end a lot of things happen to the development process itself to accomplish these kinds of things and its that expertise that leads to the creation of development tools and productivity tools to support that process that Sony would be interested in.
The success of RFOM is definitely more than just media hype. This is coming from a fan of PC FPSes and an avid lover of Halo1 as well. I've seen plenty of games that fall under the realm of "just another shooter" but the things that Insomniac have planned for the engine created from RFOM have me salivating. When you see Ratchet n Clank FToD in action in that trailer, you have to remember that RFOM laid down the foundation for that. In short, Insomniac knows how to lay a framework down that should be able to expand at least three big project games and deliver a knockout each time. That is the kind of expertise and power you should PRAY makes it into an SDK update at some time or another!
DP... Firefox crashed and I didnt think it made it in
Genji's control and general gameplay were pretty poor too, but yeah, if the camera had been fixed, that game would have scored in the 8s. The production values were through the roof, and graphics and art design really top notch.

Something about the way he says "we've had a chance to be a part of" makes me think they are working on something with Sony or other developers that will add enhanced functionality to the PS3. Either that or because it's so rewarding they made a game that features a kid from the Make A Wish Foundation as a character in a new resistance level. ;)
A bit of a letdown but I guess I wasn't that far off after all. http://www.gametrailers.com/umwatcher.php?id=59708

Hopefully Insomniac will be fully prevalent in texture streaming by the time they release their next project. Resistance was notably devoid of texture streaming (hence it's slight visual inferiority to Gears), but once they nail that plus a couple of other new techniques, they should be able to really showcase some of the PS3 as-yet untapped powers.
just a couple of other new techniques? ...maybe you forget that Re is a launch game...and technically is already more impressive than Gears for all the stuff going on on the screen...graphics is not only "textures"......
IMO people continue to compare PS3 launch games to 2nd gen X360 games...
...and there is not a clear winner...can you imagine if we wait 1 year and we compare the best 2nd gen PS3 games to X360 launch games ?
...only my opinion.....

roobieroo is absolutly right - it was the inclusion of little James in the game, that was mentioned as the most rewarding. A guy from Insomniac confirmed it in a thread over at neoGAF.
