Hey guys, I haven't been here for a while but i had a question that some of you will easily answer. I want to be able to run programs off my ps3 and watch avi files without rencoding to supported media files. I know this thing works almost like a computer so i want it to do just that and at the same time, play PS3 games. Im not to familiar with linux but if it's the only way to go, then i will take that that path. Is this possilbe yet and is there a newbie guide somewhere on this site?
Thanks so much.

I'm sorry, I'm no expert on alternative operating systems, but it is certainly worth it to convert your video. You can even upload it to google video, and it will convert it for you.
Xilisoft makes some great convertors, including a DVD ripper for a very reasonable price.

Mpeg4 AVC is only format i've gotten to work thus far. So your .avi would need converted over. I've been using ps3video converter 9 from red kawa(which is free) , & Xvid4PSP which produces way better results but also takes atleast 2x as long.

Thanks for your response. What if i want to run programs? For example, i play party poker alot. What's the most easiest way in doing this?
Thanks

Can you give me a time estimate?

you will need to use a linux distribution to run any unsigned code on the ps3.

You can only run Party Poker if you're playing a Flash-based version online. The PS3's default OS is limited in what file formats it can store, and what programs can be run (so far, the only 3rd party app for the XMB is Folding@home).
You'd have to install Linux on your PS3's hard drive if you want more computer-like functionality.

Thanks guys. Questions Answered.

Depending on the file size and lenght of movie it can take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours to transcode a video to mpeg4, mpeg2 however will take less time (which is the format i use better quality) a 2 hour movie will take 1 hour or less.

The PS3 is basically a PowerPC-based computer (the core of the Cell is a PPC derivative, altough somewhat simplified). This means that you cannot run any stuff, be it for Linux, Windows or whatever, that has been built for Intel processors (x86). So, if this party poker is some kind of Windows game, there's no reasonable way. If it's a Linux game, someone could re-compile it, but then you still need to install Linux to play it. And switching between Linux and the PS3 XMB (for playing PS3 games) is still somewhat clumsy for the average user.
And as for AVIs, it depends on the codec, probably. These need to be re-implemented by Sony for the PS3 as well, since the codecs on a Windows system are x86 specific too. A regular Linux on a PC can use these codecs, because it runs on the same processor hardware, but Linux on PS3 cannot do that. And as for running movies in the XMB, it's all up to Sony to provide codecs.
