hi, like most of you, i really love to play videogames. i play them with a passion and if i'm into a game, i complete it 100% and nkow the game inside and out. and since i'm a junior and have to start thinking about careers, i know i'm probably not going to becoem a videogame designer, what do you have to know in order to be one. i know you have to know C++ and all that stuff but thats boring for me. is there liek a job of liek videogame storyline writer of combat maker. i mean, i dont want to actually and physically make the game, i just want to come up with idea's for it. is there a specific title for this role?
aslo, besides videogame deisgner, what other videogame related jobs are there that have to do with making the actual game.
also, what do you guys know about being a videogame tester
i hear tester and designer are very competetive jobs.
sry this is so long but for those of you who toook the time to read it, thank you
A small hint, and please don't take this the wrong way.
Jobs will not cater themselves to you, you have to cater yourself to them.
If you really want to get into the Video Game industry. Learn C++. Learn how to right Drivers and Assembly language.
or
Learn to make 3d models and textures. Learn how to draw good storyboards. Start writing a novel or 2 based in a fantasy universe.
As far as video game testers go. Even they need to know at least a solid scripting language. C++ or C# are high in demand here.

This may offer you a good introduction . Go HERE (http://www2.ravensoft.com/getajob.htm)
But in the end it all depends on what youre interested in, and without offence intended, you dont seem very motivated and as 'siren' said, 'Jobs will not cater themselves to you, you have to cater yourself to them.' You may have to study for years for jobs in the gaming industry and right now, it wont be easy to get a job as its a very popular market.

dont worry, no offense taken. a little ciritizism is not always a bad thing. even i said that i'm most likely not going to have a job in videogames i just wanted to nkow what i had to do in order to get one. see, i'm not a big tech guy(meaning C++ and all that other language stuff). i just really like to use my imagination to create and think up idea's. like in RPG's say FFX, the storyline was excelent. it was: lengthly, had twists, always kept me the edge of my seat, had many different emotions in it(humorous, scary, dramatic, and so on), and most importantly in my opion, it captivated me. and the ending, i asked liek 10 people and all of them said if made them tear of or almost cry. see, thats what i mean, that sotry really got to you, you felt like you were a part of the adventure. it wasn't like the third time that you fought seymour you were like oh, another boss, you were prolly like, wtf i thought i killed this guy for good, how is he back (btw i think seymour 3 way the hardest boss in the game)? i would love to use my imagination and create enormous worlds liek spira or help in the incredibale storyline.
or in soccergames, since i play, i would love to help improve the games. even now as i play for fun, i can pick up on all the little things of the game that could be improved.
thats what i wanna do.
Am aiming for a career in video games, or sumthing to do with computers, i did crap in my GCSE's and now am doing NCFE IT practioner and GNVQ ict intermetiate, then after them two qualifications im take BTECH national diploma in computing technologys and languages, soon i will pick up a poistion in University easy
If I were you I'd go after a career working for a gaming magazine or big gaming site like gamespot. That would be alot of fun.

...or a lingerie salesman at Victoria's Secret ;) I think it'd be awesome to work for a gaming magazine. You'd get special privileges with interviews, E3, and all that good stuff.
You get to go to every E3 i bet if you worked for a company for example EA (i dont wanna work for them thank god)
If you work for a quite reputable fansite you also get invites to E3.
A fan site like this one? hey i think we all should be eligable for E3, but then it would get cramped, so i think all of us in this forum should be eligable.... but then the Xbox 2 booth will have tumble weed bouncing across, and of course Siren behind the booth :D lol hey am kidding there siren...
Here is some ideas for the website:
A flash image/feature image scroller similar to IGN's
example:

http://www.flash-menus.com/picstrip.asp
How about this cool flash effect for our media page...it can be the background:

I am just bored at work but I thought these were kinda cool to look at.

I absolutely hate flash menus. This is the worst thing about IGN and GameSpot - those bloody rotating flash things :x
I think the only place for flash on PS3Land is for videos.
Those are some cool effects. We might look at a Flash features thingy, akin to the very thing you hate Bhav ;) Heh. We'd make it very easy to use and fast loading.
Which bit do you hate about them Bhav?

The fact that you can't middle click flash links.
I middle click links all the time because in Firefox this opens the link in a new tab. I don't like leaving the page and having to come back to click on something else.
If it's fast, it shouldn't be a problem - but IGN's, for example, is a total pain.
In fact, it would be fine to have a flash thing as long as normal links appear somewhere. This way I can still middle click through loads of stuff
If you decide to go ahead with some sort of flash section somewhere, then that's cool. I'll just have to deal with it  But for the benefit of the visitors, please don't make it sluggish and chunky. The less space it takes up, the better.
(Actually, if this allows the easy addition of text on top of a feature image, then I'm all for it. See IGN's for what I mean)
What did you think of the Cells floatin as a flash background.
Just like we have the Digg.com link on our articles I think we should also include http://www.news4gamers.com/ since they pretty much do the same thing. Little more specific since its all about gaming.
What do you guys think?

Looking at the other side of the argument, if they both do the same thing, then why have both?
news4gamers isn't very big afaik...there are other priorities that need to be sorted.
But it's definitely something we should consider in future.
We are 3 times bigger than News4Gamers, so it's more benefical for THEM if we put a link up - heh.
I'm not keen on having a flash background for a webpage. It'll make it load slowly, look cluttered, and make the site hard to use.

The other major issue with flash is that search engines can't index flash content.

How about a PS3Land.com toolbar for people to download???
similar to ps3.net's : http://ps3.ourtoolbar.com/

Hmm....do people really like using toolbars? They just mean less space for the actual webpage.
I really think we should seriously consider streaming videos through flash. The embedding system at the moment isn't very good, but flash should help sort these issues (e.g. not working in firefox, only compatible with wmv), and also make it easier to provide video content.
I don't think toolbars do very much. We used to have one a couple of years ago but it didn't do very well (true traffic was less, but still it did very poorly in relative terms).
Streaming videos through Flash is something I'll look into. We definitely can play any video file type, and have it work in FireFox, without Flash though.
Bhav - can you add videos to the media page? If so, why not just add a new video through that - and then link to the page it creates? If not, I will PM you access. Let me know.

Yeah that's what I have done for a couple of videos.
But for whatever reason, I can't view them when using firefox.
And it only seems to work with wmv. I know there's that script for embedding mov, but it's not exactly a clean way of doing it, because you still have the WMP video area at the top, followed by the embedded mov beneath.
For the videos that are there at the moment, I have done exactly as you suggest by linking to the page that's created.
It just doesn't seem user friendly if there are compatibility issues.
Hey Rebon, I had an idea for the PS3 store thing or whatever. Maybe when we ship out the items or lets say just the t-shirts and stuff we send people a free bumper sticker that says "PSU.com --- All your Playstation news, previews, ect in one place!"
Because one, people will like getting free stuff, and two, everyone uses bumper stickers. Whether its on their school binder or on their car, its free advertising.

The thing is, we're not actually going to be doing the shipping etc ourselves - we're going to provide price comparison of the major retailers (Amazon, EBGames, Play.com etc) and then earn a commission. However, I do like the idea of stickets - maybe give them to the top 100 forum posters or something.
ok...cool, yeah it was just an idea.
