View Full Version : Ripping my hair out over this FAKE memory card.

Oh MAN I'm such a dweeb. I bought a new 4 GB Memory Card (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=002&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=120103990445&rd=1&rd=1) off ebay for like $50 shipped. I figured...eh, what the heck. Well, it's $50 down the drain, unless Paypal or ebay can get me a refund.

It took 30 minutes to put 4 gigs of data on to the card. My PSP shows the memory card, but can't actually run the programs off it. After hitting Information it shows "unknown" for MagicGate support (my authentic 1 GB Sony card shows "supported").

What is worse, is I also have this OTHER (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=003&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=130096218363&rd=1&rd=1) card on the way... I bought them both on April Fool's Day. I can only assume I won't fair much better with it.

So far, I've left negative feedback, emailed the seller, put up an item dispute with Paypal, and notified ebay of the fake imitation.

*beats head on wall* Stupid move, stupid move.

Man that sucks if its true you can not use the mem card but you should really try to format the card I bought a 512 card from BB and it would not work until I formatted it
You might not have thought about this because the sony card is formatted out of the box

Yeah, first thing I did was format it w/ the PSP, because I wasn't certain if these things must be formated first or not. All my issues are post-format, I'm afraid.

I guess I can try to re-reformat, can't really hurt anything at this point. I just hope the second card I've got on the way isn't a fake too. It is from a different ebayer.

I got a memory stick off eBay, and its strange. In my PS3, it recognises it straight away, i can format it, and use it. However, in my PSP, it says that there isn't a memory stick inserted :s. Both my PSPs are 3.03oe-c and are not faulty :s

I'm disputing the purchase with Pay Pal, and hoping that works. If not, I may go buy an authentic Sony card at Best Buy, then use my receipt to exchange the bad card for a new one. But, I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with that morally... oh, dilemma.

it might be like that is because its from hong kong. I got a memory stick from the exact same seller and it works like a charm...the again I don't use it on an english PSP

Really??? Can you do me a favor? If you put your memory stick in your PSP and go to "Information" does it say MagicGate: Supported, or MagicGate: Unknown? Mine says Unknown...

The 4gb memory sticks are formatted in fat32 for compatibility issues, it makes them really slow, here's a link on how to format it into fat16, see if it speeds up the data transfer times. http://www.pspmod.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16597& (http://www.pspmod.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16597)

There are no regions for psp's, they are all the same.

I think there is something up with your fake. I have a fake one also, MagicGate- Unknown, it's been working since Dec.

I'm also using Sony Firmware, are you sure it's not an issue or oversight on your part?

Did you already leave Neg. feedback?

What I would have done is blackmail the seller to send you a working replacement or else you would report them to Ebay.

Yeah, I think my route will be to complain to everyone, including the seller, eBay, Pay Pal, and my bank (where the funds originated from) until someone reverses the charges and I get my money back. ...

Sorry for the double-post, but I just tried out your little FAT 16 trick, and for the time being the card is reading properly!!! I'm still not happy with my memory stick, based on the fact it is a Sony knockoff (otherwise MagicGate would register in the affirmative), but at least for now I have a working 4 GB card. +Rep +Rep +Rep!!!

Good to hear that you have it working... But like I've been saying every time I get the chance: DO NOT GET A FAKE MEMORY STICK!

Next time, I suggest sticking with official ones ;).

as THE ONE suggested.. do go for the cheapo memory sticks.. i for one was going to go cheapo and buy a 1GB-2GB memory stick at futureshop when i get my PSP(core pack) and i was going to go cheapo with those lower unknown name brands.. already from what i read on this section(PSP section) its STRONGLY!! advise to only go with the Sony memory pro duo sticks.. they work the best with the PSP from what i have read and heard already.. those are much more expensive but certainly worth it.

Mine says unknown all the time but, its because I make and use homebrew on the PSP(It interferes with some things on the PSP.
There are no regions for psp's, they are all the same. Very well, I didn't think that memory sticks were region free.

Hmm, odd; I use 3.10 OE firmware, but despite that my 1GB Sony memory stick registers as MagicGate: Supported, while my 4GB "Questionable Sony" card says MagicGate: Unknown...

Now I'm at odds with what to do. The card does hold 4 GB of data, and now that it is in Fat16 the files run on my PSP. I only laid down around $50 with shipping, where as I'd be over $100 easy retail. But I -was- told this was an authentic Sony card, and I just don't know if it is...

My friend ran into him and he is the one with the bricked PSP.

He claims that his MS's are "official", but in fact, they are not. My friend actually returned his first shipment for an "exchange", but ended up bricking his PSP with the exchanged "alleged" official memory stick anyways. Which pretty much prove that he doesn't have any "official" ones, and all he has are fake MS's.

Might be a different seller, but if you got it from a Hong Kong seller, chances are, they get their stuff from the same source.

Yeah, he is telling me to return the MS to him in exchange for a "concrete answer." I'm like... ah, no, that's my only piece of evidence that you sent me an imitation stick, lol.

I think in the end, he'll give me a refund but expect me to pay to ship it back to him. Grr, not sure how this will play out.

I'm still halfway tempted to just forget about it and buy a 4GB stick from Best Buy, then exchange the imitation for another one.

I'm glad that I could help, thanks for the rep! If I were in your shoes (which I will be within the next week) I would leave negative feedback and keep the stick, just use the 1 gb stick for updating and stuff that deals with the flash.

Yeah, certainly need to stay away from using an iffy mem-stick to flash my bios... THAT could be costly!!!

EDIT: (Wanted to avoid a double-post) - He says he'll refund me $25, and when he get my card he'll refund the rest.

I just recieved my MS, its a 4gb and its fake. I'm still happy with it though, you can't expect to get a genuine stick for only 33 bucks off of ebay when retail is $150.

I can get a 4GB MS for $120CAD, retail. It should be around $99USD, give or take.

The prices of memory stick has come down DRASTICALLY over the past 3 months, and getting the official one is worth it (less hassle later on, and less chances of it bricking your PSP :)).

i got duped for a 2gb MS on ebay recently filed my complaint with paypal and a month later had my money back ... no matter what hte outcome is with the seller report him .. there is a thread in the ebay forums that keeps updated with fraudulent MS sellers to help others keep away from them.. if i were you i would not deal directly with him for a return .. file hte complaint with paypal they will send him an email that he can respond to and how he wants to handle it .. if you deal directly with him there will be no records if he should still burn you on it ... the email they send him he will be able to request what he wants done ( wether its return the MS or whatever ) ..

Thats the thing that drew me away fromt he PSP in the first place... those memory sticks!

I have a question: Is there anyother way to save on the PSP without a memory stick?

I bought a 2GB back when 2GB's were the highest and were expensive as hell, off ebay for like $40 bucks. It worked fine, but I saw this thing on ebay to check. I checked and it was a fake! I didn't want to return it though, it works fine (has 2GB and I tested it also (used its max capacity). It's pretty cool :)

The write speeds are slower I believe, but I don't really mind.

Why the heck would you NOT want a MS anyways? Homebrew FTW!

my 2gb worked fine too until i bought a PS1 game off the PS3 .. when i hooked up my PSP to the PS3 and tried to download the game it kept giving me an error saying the card was locked ... otherwise it worked fine with all my PSP game saves and downloading off the PSP site and even worked fine in my dig cam .. if not for downloading off the PS3 i would never of even known
