Definitely get HD over SD, but for that size, you should consider getting a computer monitor. It's cheaper and still looks just as good.

You definately want to get a HDTV. I just got one myself for my PS3 and it makes the world of difference. Even on 26inch you will notice it. It not just the high resolution that inproves the picture, but the colour depth is so much better. HD is a money well spent.

if you buy a 360, you can get the vga cable and use your computer monitor as a "higher definition" display, you wont get true high def resolutions but you will get much better quality than sdtv. If you get a ps3, go to www.x2vga.com and get that unit, it does the same thing as the vga cable but it will run you abuot 90 usd, compaed to 40 for the vga cable from microsoft. hope this helps, rep me if it does

You have many options. Many mid-range LCD monitors can be used with the PS3 in true HD. A 1920x1200 monitor (expect to spend $600-700) can do 1080p, smaller ones can usually do 720p and 1080i. Your best choice is a HDMI to DVI cable; don't pay more than $20-30 for that, but you may have to shop online. That won't do anything for audio, but a good monitor will be just as good as a TV, and possibly cheaper in the size range you're looking at.

There are gizmos to convert component to VGA. If you go with DVI, make absolutely sure your monitor has "HDCP" support; if it doesn't, it won't work with the PS3. (VGA and component will be fine as long as the monitor supports them.)

what's the smallest size (ex. 20 inches) of a 1080p tv you can get? and how much generally do they cost?

HD is the only way to go!

@vish: both of those cables are overpriced, there are much better VGA solutions.

For PS3: why use crappy VGA? If you buy a monitor just get an HDMI to DVI cable

15ft, gold plated, $4.69:http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10231&cs_id=1023104&p_id=2505&seq=1&format=2&style=

For Xbox 360: Don't buy first party cables, they are always overpriced! I'm sure you can find a third party solution for a fraction of the price.

EDIT: 1080p TVs start at 37 in. (Westinghouse model)

You can only use DVI if the monitor supports HDCP. Otherwise, you'll have to use VGA with a conversion box.

but if you're buying a new monitor why wouldn't you just make sure it supports DVI-D?

Almost all monitors do except maybe some ancient models at the 20in. - 26in. size range.

YO DANZIG-MOTHER CHECK OUT THIS ONE: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824112009

1. 2ms perfect response time for gaming
2. closest resolution to 1080p that you can get at this size
3. 2000:1 contrast ratio that pwns other monitors and also HDTVs at this size!
4. HDCP compliant!

Almost all monitors do except maybe some ancient models at the 20in. - 26in. size range.DVI-D is not the issue here, it's HDCP. HDCP is still fairly new to monitors.

If you're going to buy a new monitor (like I did), of course you should try to get one that supports it, but I'm saying for people who already have older monitors they want to use PS3 with. If it doesn't support HDCP, the other route is VGA through a conversion box...

I agree completely I've been looking into HD sets for months now and have realized for my needs a computer moniter is perfect. If you don't get many HD stations just use the tv you have now to watch tv as SD sets have a BETTER picture on SD broadcasts buy a $300 monitor a couple wires off newegg and a decent set of 5.1 computer speakers for like $100 and your set, plus you can still watch your tv while using your video game consoles good for sports!!

You will notice on a SDTV that in some levels on R:FOM single/multiplayer there dark somerset forest area...ect. If you get a good sized LCD HDTV it brings out the picture quality better and you can see everything. I will admit I was totally blown away while playing R:FOM in 720p I started a new game just to play the whole thing agian in HD its awsome.

I tried PS3 and XBOX360 on SDTVs, the words on screen is unreadable. you need to get a HDTV, plus, in 2009, the air broadcasting is going HD as well.

In 2009 they're just shutting off over the air broadcasts, meaning you won't be able to use a TV with bunny ears to watch TV anymore. It doesn't mean SDTVs won't work anymore. I've never heard that they're going to start broadcasting HD over the air, but that could be true.

Definitely get a HDTV if you can afford it. They run for about 800+. The TV I recommend is the Sony KDL-V32XBR2. It's in the Bravia line of series, one step below the 40" 40XBR2 1080p set but still one of the best 720p LCD's you can get on the market for an affordable price. The 32XBR2 will run you about 1300 online and 1500 in store. The 40XBR2, while more extravagant, will run you about 2500 online and almost 3000 in store.

If you just want to get something to play games on NOW, then I suggest a monitor. Here is the one I'm gonna get
http://www.samsung.com/Products/Monitor/LCD_Digital/LS22MEWSFVXAA.asp?page=Specifications

as you can see, HDCP is there, and will have no issues on PS3 if you decide to get HDMI > DVI-D. You won't be able to watch Bluray the right way though, but at least for games it's just fine.

They are currently broadcasting HD over-the-air and will continue to do so past 2009, but after 2009, everything will be HD or else yer screwed..

I have my PS3 hookes via s video on an SDTV and it looks decent....the words are a little fuzzy but otherwise it looks good.

I have my premium 360 on VGA 1280x1024, it looks amazing, just beautiful.

And my other core 360 at my mom's house is at 720p on my HDTV, the dashboard is a little hard to read but the games look incredible.

I got a 24" Gateway monitor, composite/DVI/component/S-video/VGA, for $679. 1920x1200, so it can do full 1080p. It's not TV-sized big, but I don't have a lot of room.

What in the world does this have to do with what he asked? He wants to know if he should get an SDTV or an HDTV. Not how to get the PS3 or xbox to play in hd on a standard VGA monitor.

EDIT - Oh, I see, you are trying to save him some cash by not having to buy a new display at all.... /EDIT

To the point for the OP -

Get an HDTV or an LCD monitor that supports HDCP like the Dell e207fp - I got it for $275 from dell direct a few weeks after I bought the PS3. It connected via an HDMI>DVI cable and worked great until I got my actual HDTV. It only displayed in 720p, but it made a huge difference over the SDTV that I was playing on before. (now its my second PC monitor)

yes, ps3 can do 720p if you get the x2xvga converter, www.x2vga.com
if u have a 360, you can just buy the official microsoft vga cable and run on like 1024x768 or whatever native resolution ur monitor supports. Hope this helps, +rep if it does.
