Analysts in Japan are currently pushing for a price cut on the Sony (http://www.ps3center.net/story-389.html#) PlayStation 3 (http://www.ps3center.net/story-389.html#) console. The price cut could allow Sony to gain ground on both Microsoft and Nintendo with their Xbox 360 (http://www.ps3center.net/story-389.html#) and Wii platforms which has a much larger installed user base than that of Sony. Japanese analyst Nomura stating at this point that Sony has only sold about half the consoles it has shipped out thus far. Sony has shipped 6 million PlayStation (http://www.ps3center.net/story-389.html#) 3 units to date meaning that the sales of the console are only at around 3 million. This is a respectable number but not the market penetration Sony and its shareholders were looking for this generation following the immense popularity of the PlayStation 2 (http://www.ps3center.net/story-389.html#).
he analysts stated that "We do not see the necessary drawing power in the title pipeline at this point," said analyst Eiichi Katayama. "We expect Sony to take measures to increase market penetration of PS3 hardware, including extending the software line-up, and expect to review our medium-term estimates for the game segment if and when such measures come into view." The PlayStation brand will always have drawing power to a great extent but at what price the consumer is willing to pay for that brand is being put into question here. It seems that Japanese analysts think a lower price point will help the PlayStation 3 reach the market penetration they desire.
This is good news for Sony.

I would say it's neither bad nor good. It's good that Sony has been able to supply so many PS3s to stores, so that anyone that wants a PS3 will be able to get one without problems. It's also a bit bad, since they haven't sold as well as many hoped.

...So this means 6 Million sold right? We're making great strides catching up to MS's "10 million sold" figure!!!!
^JK I'm sorry I had to say it. But this is good news nonetheless, once some killer apps come out for PS3, the supply is there.

...and most are sitting on store shelves...
At least they are providing a good supply of their units.
They won't be on the shelves long.
By this time next year, the console landscape will look very different.
In fact - by Christmas, the PS3 will be the "must have" item.

people cant afford the prices thats because most of em especially in England have spent it on Alcohol and boozing. Lets be real if someone been saving up for the console for years they would afford it. But they been spending money on either paying bills boozing or buying clothes they dont need! Plus sony needs a price cut as well.

Sales in Europe alone are above 800k according to Stringer and easily another 100k in the other PAL territories according to some of the first day sales reports.. Add this on top of Japanese sales and the new NPD data that is about to come out and we are muuuuuuuch closer to 4Mil if not breaking it!
I do believe a 3/4 unit sell through is unexpected but some of you guys stating that Sony hasn't sold half its consoles need to pull your heads out of your ass! These analysts are soo three weeks ago.

That's great that so many have sold in Europe already in such a short time and at such a high price. People should stop whining about the price and just get one. If you haven't been living under a rock for the past 3 years you would've known about the PS3 and started saving for it. I already had the money and just had to wait for the system to become avaliable because the stores were sold out for a month. It's not the end of the world if you support Sony by buying their "expensive" system. And how is it some of you can't find anything to do with your system? I've only got Oblivion, RFOM, Tekken DR, and MKII and can't find enough time to play any of them. Maybe some of us need jobs!:D

I don't know about MS...but I'm yet to see a Wii in stores.
From what I have heard from a couple of friends that have tried to get PS3 units, its not easily available in the stores here in Norway.
I also did a quick check on the webshop for the largest consumer goods chain and they did not have it available in any of their stores in the capitol city. But they claimed it was in stock for the webshop.
And the store I have been to, to get an extra sixasis was sold out of those to.
So atleast here the stores are not flooded with unsold PS3.
Hmm this is good. It shows that they can supply everyone, and you can just walk into a shop and get one when you want one instead of having to wait for months and months to get one.

I guess it is better than Wal-mart getting one Wii at a time, then selling it within minutes..took forever for me to get one for my bro..
Ps3 is already half way to xbox360 shipped numbers in only 4 months. xbox360 is goal is to announce 12 million shipped by June
For anyone that doesn't think shipped is important this is what Peter Moore of M$ thinks
What we're talking about is "sold." "Sold" means that we're a wholesaler of hardware and we sell it to a retailer, and that's the important criteria. - Peter Moore

Sony should waite for a price drop..
they drop the price of the PS3be for summer.
then sony would look like there desperte......
they should drop the price in the fall

But less than half of that has been sold...
It's funny whenever the topic of shipments comes up someone always confidently announces 'yeah but Nintendo (most common example I see) announce SOLD units while Sony (most common example) only announces SHIPPED' units. They are not counting units sitting in their own backyards, they are all sold from the manufacturers perspective!
So if Microsoft have truely only shipped 10million, and Sony have truely shipped 6 million (regardless to how many sell), that's going to be a big kick in the backside for the 360 and wii fanboys when Vgcharts updates (assuming it does!) Go Sony!
Well I Gues This Is Good News For Sony But Yeah Ok!

what the hell?
JAP dont need lower prices! if they wanted they could get it, just one game boosted the sales by 2x and that says it all, sony needs game not more losses they they can never drop the EU prices, i say cut prices in pal thats ure primery target now!
PAL buys for almost 1k $ and in japan less then 400$ i get that the shiping wont cost lot i get the PAL cost lot cause of shiping and the extras but get real the components allready cost more then 500 and why the hell would u take it out on the PAL while the JAP pay half?
this is just insane, sony use ure money on more games to sell ure system u wanted take over EU and ure doing so stopp the looking back at what "we could" have lost.
btw how many live in japan? it cant be more then 20mill i think and why would it be so big thing if the PAL got more sales to offer?

Im getting a bit tired of hearing about the price. i really do not see the PS3 a expensive... or rather if it where a mere Game console it would be expensive.. but it is som much more than that. I have changed my dkr to usd..to make it easier for all
- I wanted a good media center in my living room that could play games too.
Price: 2000$
- I wanted a HD/BR Player.
Price: 1427$
Full Price: 3427$
Then I just bought a PS3 and got all that i needed in one.
Full Price: 785$
So I do not find it very expensive at all.. sorry
Again this is just IMHO!
Cya!

The only reason that PS3 is not sold out is because people are waiting for the big titles like MGS4, Killzone 2, Lair and others before they jump onto the ban-wagon. Some other people feel like the price tag is not justified right now.

This may shock you but Japan is home to almost 150million people. That's a little less than half the US population on a few islands. Crazy.

I disagree. i count sold as sold to customers. Yeah the Best buy reps may be considered customers when buying wholesale, but i count sold as in the consumer's hands. and last i heard it was around 2 mil. if we are counting sold as sold to the store, M$ has a lead so massive that it's not even funny.
BTW...NSTRIKER.... I dont think that people are waiting for the killer apps to come out to drop 600 on a console. There is plenty to mess with until then. BLu ray and the other good games out now.

Actually, Nintendo has actually sold most of their shipments. Through Media Create, more than 2 million Wii systems have been purchased since launched. With February's NPD (the latest available), Wii has sold through over 1.85 million in North America, although according to Nintendo rep. Perrin Kaplan on April 10th, since then total North American sales have crested beyond 2.5 million and more than 2 million in Europe and other territories. (such as Australia)
Ok where is the NPD report for March?... I mean how reliable is NPD nowadays?. I'm leaning towards vgcharts.org as more reliable I mean I cannot believe i'm saying this myself...

The point here is not how many units Sony SOLD, rather the number sony promised they WILL SHIP by march 31, the ending of Sony Fiscal year 2006. Sony kept their original target...Full credits should be given to Sony for their hard works. Do you honestly think the 3 millions units sitting on store shelves will NOT SALE by christmas? Get real.

March NPD comes out this Thursday according to people over at NEOGaf. Also how can VGCharts be more accurate than NPD? NPD actually tracks data from a pool of retailers, VGCharts merely compiles it and other data from regions outside of North America to give a more comprehensive approximation. VGCharts doesn't actually attempt falsely track sales like nexgenwars.com does. VGCharts only updates when there are hard numbers to update with which usually comes from official agencies such as NPD, ChartTrack (when available), Media-Create/Enterbrain or from PR reports themselves.

Exactly. VGcharts compile data from a much larger percentage than NPD. On top of that, NPD made a mistake not too long ago and from there on they're taking close to two months to release their data... Why should I trust everything prior to that mistake?... I mean it's a lil fishy.
They're the "official" ones tho and even if they're a false thats what everyone goes by. So I guess no matter what, NPD is the "only" one in the eyes of many.

That's right and on the other thread somone was saying SCE is doing channel stuffing.
First of all SCE won't and can't do channel stuffing.
Simply due to the fact SCE runs on supply by order,
that is once the item sold to retailer it cannot be return to SCE anymore.
Frankly most of the home electronic are sold this way,
so manufacturor won't carry the wearhousing cost on stocking the item on store shelve.
Only super market items, and interlecture products (books, magazine, CD, games,...)
are sale via store renting out the space or, bundle return.
Different products sale in diiferent way,
with home electronic you rearly sold with returns.
That's why a lot of stores do huge price drop when model change are coming.
I think this varies between countries and what is SOP there, I know in Norway stock rotation is normal for the large chains and for certain product groups or brands stock return is quite common.
Would be very interesting to compare MS, Nintendo & Sony numbers for
Total production to date
Daily,Weekly, Monthly production numbers
Shipped to date
Daily Weekly, Monthly shipped numbers
Sold to date
Daily, Weekly, Monthly sold numbers.
That way we could actually make some sense of this "war"
Thats googd know they all have to sell and sell they will8)

Shipped doesn't mean sold so it really doesn't matter. All they have to do is sell the consoles and then it will matter.

Good job, Sony. Keep putting them out there, but lets get going on that Marketing strategy!
But less than half of that has been sold...

Are ya F***in kidding me?
Nintendo may as well put Sales and Shipping in the same slot because those Wii immedietly get sold once they ship
I hope your right, all my PS3 is good for right now is Folding and collecting dust..
I know, I haven't played on my PS3 in a week. I just turn it on to fold when I come home from school.. I can't even play my favorite PS2 game FFS! I can't believe I paid so much for PS3!! :( There is nothing to do with it
They are pretty scarce around here, I went 60km and 5 shops to get mine. But then again, this is Finland.

Right now their is not really any good games for the PS3, when their is finally a couple of good games, more people will buy it. Just wait till MGS4, FF13 comes out. Also PS home might boost the sales a bit.
So does this mean we can now state 6 million PS3's as sold in the same way certain 360 fans stated 10 million sold by January07?
