Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade my PS3 Hard drive and was wondering what the biggest 2.5 Inch SATA Hard drive is you can get. Does Anyone know?

Preferably looking for 5400 RPM one as this works best with the PS3.

Questions:
The biggest i have found is this one:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-011-FJ&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=896

Would this be ok for my PS3?

Also, Would a 7200 RPM Hard drive make any difference to PS3 performance as all the games are made for 5400 RPM??

Thanks very much

From the tips i've read before, the change from 5400 to 7200 produced minimal benefit, but having the 16MB cache proved to more than worth the cost.

ok the hard drive size and speed has nothing to do with how the games are made

you could use a 10,000 rpm hdd if you could find one

get the 5400 as the 7200 will give off more heat. and i agree with getting more cache

So what is the biggest 2.5 Inch 5400 RPM 16MB Cache Hard Drive anyone can find? Also, how does th Cache help?

I think the highest is a 200GB model but I have heard of the 250GB one. Also the amount of cach is internal bandwidth for accessing data on the fly at least that's what I think it is not too sure though.

I thought that 160GB was the most? Anyhow 7200rpm is the most and 16mb cache is the most.

But usually 16mb cache or 7200rpm doesn't hold as much storage as 8mb cache and 5200rpm.

Would this be good? Also, Can anyone see any bigger ones?

Some of the larger fujitsu ones are slightly too tall to go in the PS3 (and nearly all laptops, in fact). The standard ones are 9.5mm and the larger ones are 12.5mm. Check the specs beforehand just in case.

The (hard to find) 250GB (http://www.span.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=23_512_629&products_id=13830) and 300GB (http://www.span.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=23_512_630&products_id=13831) drives are both 12.5mm drives so aren't much use.

The biggest currently available is the 200GB Toshiba MK2035GSS (http://www.drivemylaptop.co.uk/LaptopDriveDetails.aspx?p=1788).

Also as hard drives get bigger you don't need them spinning as fast because the data density is higher - so it doesn't have the same effect... of course finding a true reading of the drive transfer speed is hard as they don't tell you that in the sales information. Personally I've never seen a laptop drive with a 16mb cache but I'm sure they exist.

The biggest 2.5 inch SATA internal HDD. Is 160GB. And dont get a 7200 rpm. Because you will risk overheating your PS3.

If I get a new hard-drive for my PS3 how do I go about installing it!

Will the PS3 recognise it, and how do I put the PS3 software on it?

Or would it make more sense to get an external one and would this just plug into the USB and work the same way as one for a PC?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If it really matters that much to you get an external - you can get larger/faster 3.5" SATA drives and stuck them in an external box with a PS3->ESATA converter and get the best of both worlds. Laptop drives are always a compromise because of their size.

What does the PS3 to ESATA do?? Does it allow you do run a 3.5 inch external like the PS3s internal? If thats the case does it run as quick as having it internal?? IS there some LAG time because its going through the convertor?

Its extremely simple to do so. Even a caveman can do it. lol But anyway they have very simple step by step instructions in one of your PS3's manuals.

Just to confuse you Fujitsu do a 160GB only 8MB Cache, but 5400rpm and claim low power consumption.

Featuring 160GB of storage space, low power consumption and reduced acoustic noise, the 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drives are an excellent choice for today’s ultra-fast, high-capacity notebook computers.

Low Power means less heat.

Yes.. it brings the SATA connector outside the PS3 so you can attach full size drives. There's no lag as it's just a connector.

I wouldn't worry too much about the speed. Differences likely won't be noticeable outside of benchmarks.

I think there are 200 GB 5400 RPM drives out there cause I saw one as an option on a Dell laptop.

i'm actually about to upgrade my 20gb ps3 to a 120gb one. and i can tell you that you really cant do much with only 20gb, most downloads on psn are 500mb , oblivion takes a huge chunk for the install and saves... i'm anticipating that i'll be using my 120gb hd for awhile, but you never know maybe i'll have to go with an external one later on.

as a bit of a reference i dont need anymore than 40gb hd on my computer, but the games and software seem to be taking up larger and larger amounts of data, so i went ahead and upgraded my computer hd to 320gb. i probably wont be using all that anytime soon, maybe 5-10 years.

But usually 16mb cache or 7200rpm doesn't hold as much storage as 8mb cache and 5200rpm.

please. Usually the larger capacity drives (sometimes termed as the 'flagship' models) have greater cache, but technically the drive can be any size storage with any size cache. Rotational speed and cache size are not directly related to how 'large' the drive can be.

Higher rotational speeds allow for more data to be read from the hard drive in a given amount of time. The cache allows for the disk to "speak" between the platform (ps3, PC, etc) and the drive's innards faster. In reality, you want all three numbers to be as high as possible, 8-16MB cache, 200+GB storage, 7200+RPM. Now, early on there were rumors that the PS3 was designed to only power the motor of a 5400 drive, and that if you placed a higher-speed drive it would not work (or at worst brick the power supply.)

Most of what the PS3 does is not hard-drive intensive, though one might be lead to believe otherwise. While it's imporant to get a quality, reliable drive, spending extra for a PERFORMANCE drive will show little difference in the end. Efficiency dictates that you pick size over cache/rotational speed.

yea the RPMs isn't going to matter due to the speed of the PS3 controller..if it runs at 5400 and you buy a 7200 its going to run at 5400 anyway..

no the biggest one available are the new perpendicular drives. i got one for my ps3 of ebay... only thing is its 4200RPM but i dont see any difference in the speed. Here's more details on the product.

Toshiba 200GB 4200RPM 9.5MS SuperSlim SATA Notebook Drive with 8MB Data buffer
Model TOSMK2035GSS

One thing when ur looking for a sata 2.5 HDD make sure the interface is SATA 2 as the older SATA has different pins that wont fit into the ps3

yes, if you want to keep your ps3 running as quietly as possible, stick with 5400 rpms, and some of the better ones have quiet drives too. I got a Fujitsu 160gb 5400 rpm quiet drive. Quieter then the OEM ps3

So once you replace the hard drive in the ps3 what's the process of loading software onto it. Does the OS reside on the harddrive or does it have its own ROM kinda like a cisco router??I'm thinking about getting a 20 GB at samms today if there are any discounted here locally. But I want to understand the process and options for upgrading the hard drive. Thanks

No, you absolutely cannot use an ATA drive. It must be a 2.5" SATA drive.

I bought the 160MB Fujitsu model a couple of weeks ago. It was very easy to install, I just had to figure out some way to back up my stuff before I swapped out the disk.

If you've got the 20 gig model, you'll probably need to get a USB flash card reader, of your favorite variety (SD, Memory Stick, Compact Flash), and transfer your game saves to it before you swap the hard drives.

The PS3 has a 'backup utility', but it is somewhat limited, in that it will attempt to backup everything you have on your hard drive.. this includes game saves for PS2 and PS3 games, any trailers you've downloaded, any music, any photos, and any game data that is cached on your system.

You'll need to delete whatever you can afford to delete, if you've got more than will fit on a single memory card.

Once you've got your disk usage down, you can backup your files to your memory card, and then proceed to shut down your system, unplug it, and set about upgrading the hard drive.

When you put the new hard drive in, it will automatically format it for you. Surprisingly, your PS3 will also remember your local user accounts, along with your PSN accounts.

You will need to restore your game saves, though, along with any trailers, photos, or music that you saved off.

Games that you bought from PSN can be re-downloaded. They let you download an individual file five different times without needing to do anything fancy. You just go to the PSN, and click on 'My Download List' or whatever it is, up in the upper right hand corner, and you can re-download your games.

What size flash drive would you recommend me getting? 2gb

It depends on you. I bought an 8GB Compact Flash card to backup my PS3, but I wouldn't have needed more than 1GB if I hadn't kept all the trailers that I had downloaded.

2GB would be a safe size, and not too expensive. Remember you'll need to have a USB reader to go along with it.

Go with 5400rpm. They produce less heat and are less prone to causing vibration(thus noise) inside your PS3.

Think about what you really need the space for. If you have a PC or Mac or something you can just store all your music/movies/photos on that and stream it to your PS3 with Nero/WMP/itunes or something.

Not sure if cache is going to help or not. I switched from the stock PS3 hard drive(60gb Seagate 2mb cache and 20ms seek time) to a WD Scorpio(160gb 8mb cache and 12ms seek time) and haven't noticed ANY difference at all.

When I loaded up Oblivion for the first time since the upgrade though, about 45 minutes into playing my game froze during a fast travel, and corrupted my autosave file because I had to turn the PS3 off from the switch on the back. :(

So yeah, not sure if I would recommend WD Scorpio now.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and guys, make sure it's SATA150 and NOT AN ATA-6 DRIVE. IT'S THE WRONG INTERFACE.

a good 80 is good enough.. if you think about it, get an 80, swap it. add an external to it. and so if you're using linux and sooner or later you start dumping bds.. i'm not saying that you should but if you'd like to dump your OWN bluray movies for BACKUP purposes, then 80 would be good. dump to harddrive, and transfer to external.

The drive I linked to is a Serial ATA (aka SATA) drive, not an ATA/100 drive.

And if you have the 20 gig PS3, you'll either need a flash drive that can plug directly into one of your USB ports, or you'll need a USB flash card reader, along with a flash card.

Thanks for the heads up i was just looking to buy this.. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-145-WD

Hi All

The main thing to remember after 2.5" and SATA interface is that the drive must
not be more tham 9.5mm high or it wont fit in PS3 i think Fuji have just launched
a 250 gd 2.5" SATA dive 9.5 mm thick link was posted on another site this will be
largest drive at the moment you can fit inside.
