I have been absent for a while from the forum, so i don't know whether this information has or has not been posted yet, and i can't be bothered to search the forum, so here is the great news any way.

Apparently GT4 supports resolution 1080i. yes 1080i !!!!

For those who have no idea what this means....1080i is the resolution 1920x1080....almost all console games have resolution 640x480 (with few exceptions). It is very surprising to see GT4 at such high resolution of 1920x1080...and it's even more surprising to see that the PS2 can handle that resoltuion on a game of the caliber of GT4 (with all it's beautiful graphics) and still run at 60 FPS.

here is a screen shot taken by a jap dude of his GT4 (if you don't know already it's released in japan).

Right now you might be wondering how the game will actually looks like....well here it is....

(this screen was taken by a camera off a tv so it loses quality...it's not a direct screenshot, in other words you can expect the game to look at least this good and probably better)

And thats at 60FPS.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
don't believe me that it's still at 60 FPS?...well here:

I didn't experience any framerate problem yet on 480p with a lap in the Nurburgring. Played with 1080i for only a minute and no framerate problem yet. 1080i is very clean and sharp.

And thats from some who has played the game.

Right now i'm thinking..."this games isn't real...the PS2 just simply shouldn't be able to do this".

I gues Polyphony Digital really know how to work the hardware better than anyone else.

Yes, Polyphony are one of the few companies that actually make use of the PS2's performance analysing tools that Sony provided to all developers. They estimated a couple years ago that GT3 was only using about 30% of PS2's power. This ties in with what everyone already knew about developers under-utilising the power of PS2's two vector units. Most developers don't use the vector units at all and some use them for completely different purposes than they were intended.

Besides all that..GT4 looks amazing for PS2.

As obviouse as it may sound, this new 1080i resolution does require one hell of a TV, or even a HD-TV (something that most of us are short of).

But just for the sake of it here are a few shots of the game running on the standard resolution of 640x480:

Still looks the business if you ask me.

not much point taking a shot of a game running in 1080i on a HDTV when it loses quality though the camera and then the picture on the forum itself has a resolution of 707x422
but anyway yea its pretty amazing how polyphony did this
all i can say is that the custom engine which they use must be the best PS2 engine ever made
now just think of GT5 :D :!:

I will have a friend translate the UI there by the 6th and get back to you guys.

What I am betting is that the 1080i is for the screenshot capture, but I could be wrong.

To generate 1080i, they would have to take at least 12mb of their already limited system memory just for a frame buffer.

So if they are doing 1080i for other than the screenshot program, expect to see a lot of low res textures all over the place. (which you can see already in even the screenshots you provided). So it is likely it is running in 1080i.

In my personal opinion, if they are wasting the resources on the PS2 to accomplish this in game when most people would be content with 16x9 480p and would rather have crisper graphics, then someone needs to get fired. The amount of work that would have been needed to pull this off would have been better spent getting the long promised online mode in the game.

actually come to think of it i do remember mr. k.... saying that the photo mode would render in 1080i etc etc and i think it would make sense that in game it would be lower
Still a great looking game though

Yea, it is amazing what Poly was able to get out of the PS2 powerwise.

Polyphony has always been able to get the most out of the PS2 and PS1, in my opinion. They should teach others how to make use of the PS2.

The only other company that I would say could possibly pull off graphics like this is Naughty Dog. They have done an amazing job with draw distance and overall graphics quality in their platformers while maintaining a high framerate.

They made Jak III didn't they? That game had awesome graphics.

Those screenshots are mind-blowing. For PS2 they mark five years of getting to know the PlayStation 2 architecture. If only Sony had made PS2 easier to develop for perhaps we could of seen these levels of graphics many years sooner.

Indeed.

Honestly GT4 looks like an xbox game, i am still clueless as to how PD is able to do this on the PS2.

I guess it seems that GT4 is the pinnacle of PS2 graphics.
Yes we have bright developers such as naughty dog (with jak series), konami (with MGS series) and others who really know how to get the best out of the PS2....but i think we can all agree no one does it better than Polyphony Digital.

I have to absolute and up most respect for them.

It kind of makes one angry to think we could of been playing games that looked like this all along.

If Sony had put out some decent development tools at launch you may have been playing games like this.

It is pretty sad when even companies like Square-Enix have trouble getting good graphics out of the system.

For the next console Sony is having some help from nVidia on the graphics front. I also hear that they are working with IBM on some low level development tools. We will have to wait and see just what becomes of both of those.

Yeah, I agree that with the help of NVIDIA and IBM this time around, developers are going to enjoy making games for Sony's console with more ease-of-use. I believe they've released some information on their dev tools, but I don't remember where. *goes and looks for the linkie link*

Wow, that's amazing because I didn't think that the PS2 could be capable of such high performance...but I'm still gonna wait until GT4: Online comes out because this one doesn't support it from what I heard :D but I can still wait.

That's true and they also said that it will go easy on the developers because they made the Cell easy to understand or something like that.

PlayStation 3 chip will go easy on developers (http://ps3portal.com/?view=article&article=71&PHPSESSID=72f056d51f664cbca74ffdf35268035c)

So it shouldn't be too hard for developers to get the most out of PS3.

It's still nice to see great graphics. To prove some Xbox fanboys wrong. PS2 CAN have amazing graphics also.

well it took almost 4 years of development to get this game out. If it didnt look this good polyphony's name would be dragged through the mud and it still might catch a little heat because online play was ommited out.

An online disc just sounds like to me a way to milk GT4 for all its worth due to the ammount of time and money put into making the game. We have already waited SO long for the game. What does it matter anouther 2 or so months of delay to inlcude online play? Whats already a work of art coulda been the all out masterpiece of racing games. :|
