i took tae kwon do for a few years stopped the belt b4 black belt cus my school was becoming really bad.
but i don't liek thats or karate or any other step by step martial arts like that. you shouldn't be bound to only certain moves and skills, you need to explore everything. thats why i like street fighting or something like that, something you would actually use. i dont care who you are, ur opponent in a real wont give you enough time to do a super triple axe kick(just making up a bulllshit kick that will never work in real life). the only martial arts i would like is kung fu or jeet kun do(bruce lee's own martial art)
but my far the coolest, if i could do it is, CAPOIERA.
if u wanna see soem insane capoiera, download clips by a guy named, Joe Eigo
I began taking Karate when I was a Jr. in highschool...I loved it so much, the sparring, individual classes...everything. Unfortunately I couldnt juggle it with school and football. One day I'll begin taking it again, not only is it fun...I feel it is important that Im able to protect my family if the moment ever arises.
I did Ninjitsu (likle Karate, except more of an empahsis on weapons) for around 2 years; I got to purple, the belt before black. I did it three times a week and got really into it, however it became too much with school and baseball (which I had been playing for 7 years) so I decided to quit. While I don't think I'd use any of the techniques nowadays it did a lot of good to my abs, so i'm very glad I did it. :DD
I remember being the only one that showed up to a group class once. Well in group classes we usually spar, guess who I had to spar? The frigging instrcutor. I got the living crap beat out of me, even with the gear on...and the whole time he's yelling "Get mad! Come on get mad! On the streets they're not going to go easy on you!" After taking 50 shots to the nose it worked, and I started swinging like crazy....didnt help any though.....because this guy was a stinking 3rd Degree and I was just a mere grasshoper. I came out of that class feeling so battered.

I'm getting into Chinese Gung Fu [yes, with a "G"], and I'm learning some of the teachings of Bruce Lee [his book is quite interesting, although it's incomplete]. Capoeira will give you mad abs, and is a very powerful/acrobatic style. But I prefer more of the traditional Chinese style of martial arts. Karate is rather bland for me. Kung Fu is a dumbied down version of Gung Fu, and Karate is a dumbied down version of Kung Fu, stripping away some of the best movements and teachings. There are so many styles out there that are more powerful, and also more graceful looking. But, being good at ANY form of martial arts is a great thing to learn.
You have to spar, otherwise you'll never know what to do in a real fight ;)

It's fun to see your kids watching you beat the shiz out of somebody, ain't it?
I don't take Karate, my cousins did and they said that they hated it. They thought that they were actually gonna fight not just learn how to punch and kick. So they stopped taking it. It was alright I guess.
"Okay, now we're gonna learn something brand new. We punch and then kick."
^^^ That's how it was. Not much detail and alot of bull.

Right...
Well that's them, and most people don't have respect for the culture/art like Asians do. You don't just take martial arts classes so you can kick someone's ass. It's not a "Become a master in 2 days" course. It takes time, a lot of practice, and appreciation for the art.
Karate is very step-by-step, and a lot of people don't like it. So maybe you should experiment with different forms and see what works for you, unless you're just lazy ;)

yea...sorry for all you karate fans, but it think its the worst form of martial arts. it is so step by step liek i said b4 (and liek PBM said) and it is very basic. you learn very basic things in it.
I feel it is important that Im able to protect my family if the moment ever arises.
uhhhh. sorry again for the critizism but, if you ever tried to use most martial arts, ESPECIALLY karate, not only would you get your ass handed to you, but you would prolly gets made fun of too for try to pull that shi* off. once again no offense but unless your an expert or really skilled, its not gonna work. becuase the way they teach you, its very situational and as for sparring, is light contact, and very restricting.
my advice if you ever get into a fight( and my intructor told me this too), never think about what tyou are gonig to do meaning, never be like, "ok, i'm first gonna do this this this and then this." never try to focus on a set thing becuase in a real fightt he situation can change in an instant. let yourself be "free" and just rely on your reflxes and instincts.
i took a class with this one russian guy who taught use just normal fighting and we got to spar without pads, we didn't go full contact of course but at least now you could feel it.
thats why i like jeet kun do(bruce lee's own martial arts), watch bruce lee: enter the dragon, very good movie on his life and pretty in sweet too. this philosiphy was that there is no set moves or techniques. he took ideas from every form used everytng together.
also, i know really like to use the Staff. its by far my favorite weapon but its too bad i'll never be able to really get professionally good with it(there are no staff masters who will teach where i live :( ) but i cab twril it around like kilik whe you press L2(horzontal attack and vertical attack buttons held together)

His philosophies were MUCH deeper than that, and that's not the only thing he was trying to teach.
And you will not get your ass handed on a platter if you're taking Karate. If you're very skilled in the art, you can protect yourself and others a great deal better than if had not learned anything at all.
Enter the Dragon isn't a movie about his life. His movies generally were a way of portraying some of his ideas on martial arts. And that last line...what the heck are you talking about? A video game? I bet you can take those skills with you into a real fight :suspect:
You almost tempted me to write an endless post, but I'm too lazy now, maybe later...

i know they were much deeper, i just said a general statment about them.
and i siad unless your very skilled in a martial art form, if you try any of the moves you learn, i almost garantee it will hurt you more than help unless the other guy can't fight at all. do you honestly think you would be able to pull of half the the kciks you were taught. the only oen kick i might even do is a snap kick to the stomach. if i'm really mad i'll go for the knee cap tho. if you are in a real fight and u try using just about anything other than the simplest kicks (snap kick, roundhouse, ...) it will not work. you enemy wont give u the time and its a lot easier to guard becuase take so ong to do so after you kick he can catch you off guard or off balance and take you out. but as far as kicking i would never think about kicking higer that the stomach, anything higher than that is just not a good idea. you might slip or miss but say you dont, you opponent wills till block it and you will only be on one leg and you can easily get takes down.
i'm saying unless you very skilled at martial arts, dont use too much of it in a real fight becuase most of it is crap, meaning all the "show" kicks( where you jump and spin around).
as for enter the dragon, its not a documentry but just a movie like any other, although the focus of it is his life, but since its a general movie its not detailed or nething.
as for my last line, it is from a game, i said kilik and he is a character from soul calibur 2 and i agree, i wpould never do anything liek that in a real fight. i'm jsut saying in addition to knowing a little martial arts, i also liek the staff, tis my favorite weapon. and for those who paly the game and know that staff twirl that im taking about, i jsut want to say that thats soem of the stuff i'm practicing and interested in and i can do his forward staff twirl.

Yeah, it would be a good idea to learn various close-range attacks/counter-attacks. That's why I appreciate Bruce Lee so much. It was never about blocking, but really focused on counter-attacking your opponent, and using their own movements/attacks against them, and using THEIR power to YOUR advantage. It doesn't matter how big you are, it's how you fight ;)
Anyway...while we're on the subject of martial arts movies, there's another movie that looks VERY promising starring Tony Jaa, a Thai kickboxer. It's called "Ong Bak" and will be released in the states in February. This guy rocks  Check out this trailer:

No, but its a hell of a lot better than them watching someone beat the shiz out of you.

Okay I checked him out and what else can I say but WOW! I think he should change his name to Mr. Flippy becuase all he seems to be able to is backflips, frontflips, sideflips and anyother move which involves fliping. I really doubt that than guy can even walk down the street without flipping lol.
Heres a link to see what I mean:

Ong Back looks okay, but the trailer didn't look like anything amazing. However, I do have a lot of respect for films that just portray pure martial arts with no holywood style wires or saftey net.

DINAMO788 mentioned a film which portrays Bruce Lee's life and its called 'Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story' (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106770/) not 'Enter the Dragon' which was one of Bruces films.

I know which move you mean DINAMO788 and yes I'm sure you can do that becuase it's a fairly common, simple move.

I'm sorry, I forgot where I had found the Thai trailer, it's WAY longer, and it's absolutely stunning [you can't get a feel for the English tariler]. I believe that he's doing his own stunts.
One of the best display of martial arts I've seen would be Jackie Chan's "The Legend of Drunken Master." That movie is just NUTS!! Jaw-dropping isn't even the beginning of it. If you're a fan of martial arts, or drunken boxing, this movie is a must.

"I am not worthy" "I am not worthy" "I am not worthy" I would rather have any training than none at all jocko...that's the main reason people take karate...for basic self defense if an occasional fight ever occurs. I dont know what sparring your used to but the sparring class I was in we beat the living hell out of eachother for 30 minutes straight. Get off your high horse and quit trying to make people feel lower than you just because you think you know a little more about the "martial arts" than them...because honestly I could give a crud. You take one little thing I say and try to make an example of it, you should be so proud.

i think i detect that you might be a little upset with my comments. now that i read my quote i totally see how it looked liek it was acting superior jsut becuase i have a rather high interest in martial arts and liek to learn about it. i think the reaosn i sounded like such an asshole is becuase i really like martiala rts and anything that i like and know stuff about, i get kinda excited and go off with sometimes totally thinking so thats why some of my sentances were a little, "extremish" i guess you can say.
so i appologize for sounding like a ass.
but i mean honestly, if you tried to do half of the things they taught you it would never work. think about it. simulate it in your head and please be realistic. if you ever tried a kcik other than the simplest ones, i almost garantee unless ur oppnent was an idiot, it wouldn't work. if you would kick about his stomach, the would block it some how and you would be on one leg, unbalanced, and very vunerable.
as for sparring, we never go too hard, i liek that russian place tho cus we went without pads so you do feel things and f the other guy hits you hard, you hit him back hard and the instructor understands that, but u can go crazy, then he'll break it up. it a ot more real. but we never went crazy on eachother.
Have you ever actually taken Karate? It's funny you make this assumption without any real personal expierence. I did take Karate, and the classes werent group classes...they were one on one thus meaning the studying of the martial art was much more personal. We didnt just spar with other class members we sparred instructors who enjoyed nothing more than beating the heck out of us for 30 minutes straight so we had no choice but to fight like theres no tommorow. Every hit felt real from those guys, even with the headgear on. Now you say it wouldnt protect you in a fight, I cant speak for anyone else but I can atleast give a personal account where it protected me. When I was taking Karate, like I said I never got to continue taking it and was only able to be in the class for a month or so....thus I never even graduated past the white belt. Everything I knew was very basic...well me and this kid at school had had several run ins throughout the year...we're talking about a kid that's quite bigger than me and I knew could problly tear me a new one if he really got ahold of me. Guess what, we ended up getting in a fight one day and I used the most basic Karate fighting style....you know the basic kicks, punches and defensive moves, the guys fist never even touched me. And after 10 minutes of fighting he walked away to go lick his wounds...bruises all over his face. What annoys me about you is every guy in martial arts I ever talked to has respect for the other martial arts...they never diss another one, and all believe that any of them can really help a person in the real world. You on the other hand are apparently a bit biased towards whatever class you take and seem a bit arrogant about it. I however have no bias towards Krate, Im willing to take any self defense class if I have the time...Karate saved my butt and I was only a white belt and never a good fighter. So Im pretty sure Karate can protect people bud....especially since you learn to defend from puches quite well in the class. But like I said, anything is better than nothing.

ok, how bout this, everything i said, just put an "IMO" infront of it. and yes, i did take karate and for several months and i didn't learn anything new from it that i didn't already know. the reason i don't like it so much is that IMO, i believe it is the most limited, basic, and situational. also when we would spar, we wouldn't try to hurt each other and the instructors deffinitly wouldn't wanna hurt you.
as for how you beat that kid. i dunno. all i can say is good job. btw, how old were you when you were taking those classes and when you got into that fight?
also, i have to say that you are pretty lucky to be able to find a 1 on 1 teacher. every other place i heard of is a school where you learn with a bunch of other kids. how were you able to find an individual that would work on you 1 on 1?

I didn't like Karate at all when I was taking it, but if it suits you, then that's good. You don't need to rag on other people's choice of style, that just isn't very productive. I moved away from it to learn the Wing-Chun Gung Fu style of martial arts.
Are you into martial arts anymore, DINAMO?
DINAMO788
01-03-2005, 11:40
i dont take anymore but i wish i could take kung fu or wushu and mebbe jujitstu(spelling?) cus of the sweet take downs and that whole use your enemy's power right back at him or somthing liek that.
ifi could somehow just become good at any martial arts form, it would prolly be capoiera. i download some capoiera stuff, omg those guys a frickin crazy.
like i said b4, download clips of a guy named Joe Eigo. you haven't seen anything until you have seen him.
but newyz, what i would really wanna learn how to fight with a staff, thats what i really like. the only problem is a staff is pretty big i wouldn't be able to carry it around with me anywhere.i dont take it they make any compact or fold out staffs or anything do they?
lastly, my favorite action star is jean claude van damm, i've seen bloodsport over liek 30 times and kickboxer over like 20! i mean, prolly my first if jackie chan becuase his is unreal and he still does his own stunts. he is amazing!
how bout you guys, who are your favorite action stars?
Why would you want to carry a staff with you? Do you plan on getting into fights?
I was watching mind body and kick ass moves, and Chris Crudelli was exploring a style called Dimm mac (i think that how u spell it) any ways it was really cool, what the master did to Chris was amaseing, he just sort of tapped him, and then Chris went back as if he was shot with a missile, it was all about Chi, the master put his chi into Chris, and then he did some chops to his back, and Chris was fine again (as the Chi was been taken out of Chris) there is alsorts of things about martial arts, and if you live in the UK its on BBC Three usually around midnight, its worth watching if your a fan of martial arts...

You know that "Chi" means blood in Japanese? And that "Chi" thing is a bit silly. It's like "Hey man!!! Back off my chi!!" And if you try stealing my chi, be prepared to get kicked in the nuts ;)
lmao.... No i didnt know Chi was Japanise for blood. but the belive that 'chi' comes from heven in the sky and hell from the ground, if you do your breathing in time with your movements you can feel...

Yea, I was about to say the same thing if you kept this thing going.
I guess martial arts is good though. Because it takes stress off of your chest and then look at where it got Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee. Not to mention Jet Lee.
It's still good if you learn it just in case. If it's for self defence. Just don't do all that screaming. Might get laughed at like crazy.
Another thing that Mind body and kick ass moves explored, was this bloke who can use his voice to knock people over... i personally thought it was aload of BS, but the whole Chi idea am not so sure now...

Vivendi Games has announced that F.E.A.R. will indeed be a PlayStation 3 launch title.
The confirmation comes after months of uncertainty and speculation.
The game, also known as 'First Encounter Assault Recon', is a first person shooter that has already been released for PC.
It is also being developed for Xbox 360, and Vivendi has said that both next generation versions will include exclusive single and multiplayer features not available on the original PC edition.
Earlier today we also reported that Blazing Angels will be a PS3 launch title. Hopefully more launch titles will be revealed in the coming weeks and months, as we approach the PS3's November 17th launch.
