[quote=Nunalho;2068293]A new review poped in:

Im not seeing that review

LoL...sorry, the forums had some problems

Now there are two reviews...one of them quite bad and quite ridiculous. Heck, Play magazine gave 90 to Sonic and Lair! LOL...

http://www.winningelevenblog.com/

I just want to get my paws in the game...the game doesnt need to be revolutionary to be great and to make me love it. Just has to be PES.

just ha a thought, instead of being excited bout pro evo, w shudda been gettin gta4 tomorrow or the next day:( imagine if we had, a week later pro evo:( wudda been unbeleable! ohh well more time to play pro evo!

i dont tink i wudda had a life atall if gta came out friday ha cos football manager wudda came out the same day

gta4+pro evo+ football manager= abosulty no life, apart fromwen u go the fridge for ribina ha

Given the choice between a new Pro Evo or a new GTA, it's Pro Evo all the way.
I do understand why people like GTA but I still play PES6 for hours at a time.

Soon there will be masses of choice for PS3 gamers.

Bring on PES 2008!

Check out the latest ( i think its the latest, its good at least) WEB Podcast, pretty cool, it sums up very well everything going on around PES.

Dont forget, PES 2008 might not be a huge leap from the previous versions, but at the end of the day its still PES! Most of us will play it 24/7...

My advice to Sebass: LEt go the PS2 engine.

PLAY Magazine Calls PES 2008 'Shameful'! (http://www.winningelevenblog.com/2007/10/play-magazine-calls-pes-2008-shameful.html)

http://bp1.blogger.com/_kK9fqCc3hy4/RxadZF1hTKI/AAAAAAAAAKQ/UEbwHig_nUQ/s320/playlogo.jpg (http://bp1.blogger.com/_kK9fqCc3hy4/RxadZF1hTKI/AAAAAAAAAKQ/UEbwHig_nUQ/s1600-h/playlogo.jpg)

Another PES 2008 review, and unfortunately it seems another poor review score. I received my copy of PLAY through the post, and was stunned when I saw that the game scored a lowly 70%!

Here's how they summed up the review:

'PES 2008 stumbles, rather than sprints onto the PS3, leaving us with the first Pro Evo game that falls short of the Fifa franchise. We expected a revolutionised football title that'd set the series back on course, but this is just shameful'.

So very much a ****ing review.

Everyones knows how I feel about the game, so I'm sure I dont have to go into how much I disagree with this score. Firstly I dont see how the series needed to be put 'back on course', I thought PES6 was a success and a great game to play. Secondly in the review they show awful examples of the face import feature, when eveyone here knows it worked pretty well when the WENB team were put into the game.

But whatever my views we cant get away from the fact that its another poor review for PES 2008, the first of its kind from a UK magazine. Is this a sign of things to come? We'll keep you posted.

However, I do agree with you Nunalho! At the end of the day its PES and its going to be better than PES 6, with better graphics and in HD! Thats enough for now!

Although I wish Konami werent lazy!

PES will always be the same. There will be no revolution ever, just evolution like its been the past. Im sure that this PES is good enough evolution over PES6. After all it have new AI system and better graphics. I think some people asking too much. And comparing it to FIFA is laughable to me because FIFA is a utter crap.

OWWW....7 is a pretty bad score. I guess everyone was expecting PES to make the huge leap like FIFA...though i really really wish they'd let go of the ps2 engine, its making things worse for us early next gen owners

I was not impressed with PES demo on the 360; the animation was robotic and lifeless. I hope the final version is better. The gameplay seemed pretty ok though. I will definately get the ps3 because i prefer the SIXAXIS for footy games.

Yup. That´s what i mean. The game is better than PES6, that´s what we want, i dont mind with no revolution but rather simple evolution. The game is called Pro EVOLUTION soccer, not Pro REvolution Soccer...

And that review is ridiculous, 65 for graphics and 80 for lifespan is absurd! Dont forget that this magazine gave 70 to PES but 90 to Sonic and Lair...

At he end of the day only the on-pitch stuff maters, who cares if the crowd is ugly or the menus are bad? I never had an issue with those before.

But i agree Konami must put some effort to it next time, specially on the PS3 version after Sebass saying he knows he can do much more on it.

Hmmm this game sounds awful...

Rob McLeans comments on the game...

Right.

Had my first proper session last night, around 6 hours.

Here are my conclusions.

1) im too good at the game because finishing and counter attacking is my strength and the speed of the game is ridiculous to be frank. I have now played too many games to count and still not lost, and my mates are quite good tbh, well some of them.

2) Barca/AC Milan/Man United are the best teams for me. Barca and Milan in particular.

3) Chelsea stats have taken a POUNDING. I dont even think they are amongst the best teams in the game anymore. They are 2nd tier.

4) The scorelines are getting beyond ridiculous. We were both playing flat out attack (i do this all the time anyway) and one of the games ended 12-4. This is just stupid. There were far too many high scoring games.

5) The high scoring games were peeing me off but once you accept it the game is actually great.

6) The free kicks are hard to master but are definetly masterable.

7) il think of more later.

8) i also tried everton. Mcfadden is v good, Achinbe (sp) is awful, Johnson is awesome, arteta is awesome, van der meyde is awesome.

The scorelines are cricket scores... what the **** is going on? Fifa is hard to score but Pro Evo you can score 12 in one match? Seabass you idiot lay off the crack... I cannot belive that Pro Evo has been turned into a goal frenzy arcade game!!

And that review is ridiculous, 65 for graphics

Mate i have played the demo, and the graphics are shoicking for a next gen game, 65% is very genourous, compared to Fifa it looks like a PS1 game.

I say 65 is ridiculous because the game on pitch looks cool, specially players faces and some animations...they said that in the review but slashed the score due to the ugly menus and crowd in their opinion.

But yes, i agree the game is not next gen, but i dont care, i will still have a blast.

12 goals in a 10 minute match...****, in amateur no? That hardly seems like PES.

The only hope i have for Pro Evo now is the 360 version has alot less slowdown and it's much harder to score, if it is harder to score then it could well be a whole different game.

Why would it be harder to score...? The game is absolutely the same as Sebass states so dont get your hopes high.

Regarding slowdown i dont know since no one has the 360 version yet, but you might be right since the PS3 version was rushed.

Seabass has to state that all versions of the game are the same, if he said either one was better than the other it would really suffer financially, fact of the matter is the 360 doesnt suffer from slowdown so in that respect they are defo different.

On the fifa note, played the full game today on PS3, wtf is up with the graphics on it, really poor compared to the 360 version, they look half finished.

According to IGN you are exagerating quite a lot...
The Xbox 360 version has slightly better detail on the character models than the PS3 version, but the difference is so slight it's almost not worth mentioning :suspect:

And this is EA...lol.

But i know you always favor the 360 versions, so no surprise there mate.

Regarding PES, i wont believe that one version is better than the other until i try both to check those slowdowns.

The graphics were really jaggy, could of been the 40" Sony Bravia tv i guess but we were switching between both console's/channels and the PS3 version didnt come off well at all. 360 version looks like a real football match while the PS3 looked like a jaggy computer game.

I dont favour any console mate, i'd prefer if the PS3 versions were better to justify me spending £425

Review just up on IGN!

UK, October 18, 2007 - Expectation is a difficult beast to manage. Whether it's the latest blockbuster failing to live up to its pre-release hype or the look on your girlfriend's face when she unwraps her birthday present, only to discover it's another weight-loss DVD, meeting expectation is sometimes harder than keeping David Bentley under control when he's wearing an England under-21 shirt.

Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka had a mountain to climb when creating the next-gen versions of Pro Evolution Soccer, then. Last year's Xbox 360 game delivered a high-definition experience but fell short with respect to PES's trademark realistic gameplay and sharp AI. It was by no means terrible - as you can tell from our PES6 review (http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/742/742005p1.html) - but it wasn't the Pro Evo we've come to know and love over the past few years.

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/828/828327/winning-eleven-pro-evolution-soccer-2008-20071018094651954-000.jpg (http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/775/775498/img_4984084.html)Catch out the opposition with a quick free kick.

A year on, however, and the essence of what makes PES so undeniably superb - the instinctive controls, the way you almost feel at one with your team when you're playing well - is very much back in evidence. Indeed, playing next-gen Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 is a warming, blissfully familiar experience that will make you wonder if you've accidentally slipped the old version of the game into the drive.

That's not to say Konami hasn't moved the series forward. In fact it's a noticeable improvement over last year's next-gen effort for a number of reasons. Firstly, the loose controls have been tightened up and are much more responsive, providing greater on-the-ball and close control. The AI - the foundation upon which PES has been built for so long - is markedly better too. Your players make more intelligent runs, they work together as a team more proficiently and the opposition puts up a much better fight, especially on the higher difficulty settings against the best teams.

The enhanced AI is undeniably the result of PES 2008's much-lauded TeamVision feature, in which the opposition learns and adapts to the way individuals play the game. Having said that, the AI still feels more like an evolution rather a revolution, which is no bad thing. Defenders will track back more aggressively if you continually attack in the same way and, likewise, they'll take advantage of weak spots in your defence unless you adapt to the way they play. However, it's not so overwhelming that you need to change your tactics every time you run out onto the pitch.

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/828/828327/winning-eleven-pro-evolution-soccer-2008-20071018094650439-000.jpg (http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/775/775498/img_4984086.html)Penalties aside, set-pieces are the same as ever.

In practice it's probably the most authentic football experience yet, not just on next-gen but even compared to Pro Evo on PS2. Whether you're playing a slick one-touch passing game or using the strength of big defenders to push players off the ball, everything feels spot on. Your players react the way you'd expect them to, not just as a team but also as individuals. Rooney is a bruiser on the ball and can ride the challenges of most defenders and still net a goal from 35 yards. Fabregas, on the other hand, occasionally needs protecting from overly enthusiastic opposition but technically he's one of the best players in the game, making rarely a stray pass even under pressure.

Nowhere was this level of authenticity more evident than in the Euro final we played between England and Portugal. With England dominating the centre of midfield, Ronaldo darted along wing before cutting into the box. But, as Ferdinand and Terry closed in to cut out the run - and with Ronaldo almost certain to lose possession - the Portuguese winker faked a foul and dived to the ground. Rather than award a penalty though, the ref was well-positioned and gave the filthy cheat a yellow card for his play-acting. Admittedly he was instrumental in getting Gerrard sent off five minutes later but, for that precious moment, justice was served.

On the subject of dives, there's already much debate on whether or not they should've been included. The fact is they don't play a huge part in the game and much like any other new feature in PES you really need to learn how to use them effectively if you're to get away with it. Even then it doesn't always work so, in that sense, cheating is just another (very small) weapon in your tactical arsenal and, as such, the only sure-fire way to score and win the match is to play well.

As well as smarter players out on the pitch, keepers have been improved between the sticks. A proficient shot-stopper is more likely to palm the ball behind for a corner rather than knock it back out into the six-yard box (and into the path of an opposing striker looking to snatch an easy goal). They work with their defensive line much better too and, on a number of occasions, we witnessed a centre-back covering the goal line after the keeper had come out too far and fumbled the ball.

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/828/828327/winning-eleven-pro-evolution-soccer-2008-20071018094649189-000.jpg (http://uk.media.ps3.ign.com/media/775/775498/img_4984088.html)Dirty cheat. Thankfully diving doesn't affect the gameplay that much.

Set-pieces are pretty much identical compared to previous PES incarnations: free-kicks can be taken quickly or, alternatively, you can take your time and play around with the set-up. Corners, too, are taken in exactly the same way, but penalties are slightly different. To take it's business as usual, the camera sitting behind your player. But, if you're playing alone and are controlling the keeper, the camera is more dynamic, positioned to the side of the goalie on the line, looking out at the penalty taker. It doesn't affect the way you save a shot - move the d-pad or stick to dive in that direction - but it sure looks a lot nicer.

And that is really the best way to sum up Pro Evolution Soccer 2008. It's very much business as usual, but with better graphics. On that note, it does look decent - not incredible but certainly a step in the right direction. Player likenesses are a bit hit-and-miss - Ronaldinho is on the money but Frank Lampard looks like Stuart Downing and vice-versa. The crowd is pretty ropey too, but you only ever really notice during replays and some set-pieces.

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/828/828327/winning-eleven-pro-evolution-soccer-2008-20071018094647907-000.jpg (http://uk.media.ps3.ign.com/media/775/775498/img_4984082.html)The official clubs in the game look great. Shame there aren't more.

The other sticking point some might struggle with is PES's lack of official Premier League teams. With only Spurs and Newcastle on offer, a lot of English football fans may well feel put out playing as London North and Manchester Red. Personally it doesn't really bother me any more, because there are plenty of other licensed teams in the game and it's also incredibly easy to rename the teams and replicate the kits almost perfectly. There's even the option to use the PS Eye to take a snapshot of a logo that can be slapped on the chest of your collective team. Indeed, we took a pic of the Fly Emirates logo, tweaked the colours a little and had it on the shirts of Arsenal within a matter of minutes. Closing Comments
Seabass and his team have come good, then. Next-gen Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 captures the essence of the original games perfectly, gives it an HD injection and takes the AI to the next level. It’s by no means perfect: the frame-rate drops when the screen gets really busy, usually during a quick clearance when the box is flooded with players or, occasionally, during a replay. But, when you’re actually stuck into the action, it’s likely you won’t really notice or indeed care. Of course, some players will think that a drop in frame-rate on a machine as powerful as PS3 is an absolute travesty and, in some respects, they’d be right. But if a flaw as incidental as this prevented said players from buying PES 2008 altogether, they’d be missing out on the most realistic, intelligent and enjoyable football experience on console yet.http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?p=2071217#post2071217

WTF was this about? Seriously, some english ppl just don't get ove the fact that Portugal beat England twice (in Euro 2004 and in the World Cup in 2006). I mean, why would they put it that way in the review?

It should be Mr. Filthy Cheat for them...I bet english ppl would give their left nut to be able to have C. Ronaldo on their national team. At least after I saw England getting beat by Russia yesterday, its clear you need some help from really talented players like him ;)

Envy is a very very sad thing...stupid thing to put in a review.

Ah well, what matters is that PES 2008 kicks a$$ :D

P.S. UK, man, seriously... It looks like a PS1 game?! Geez... BTW, I thought according to you the game was 'sounding awful' At least thats what you said yesterday...guess you are one of those guys which gets his mind changed by reviews...i was always meant to buy PES regardless reviews.

Yeah, like that. I mean it would suck for me having to add you guys and then not know who exaclty i can get into a game with. Unless someone wants me to move to Europe and live in their basement.;)

BTW i think the IGN review was unbiased and well balanced. It seems my plan to buy both PES and FIFA just went out the window. EA can keep their game.

Its nothing to do with envy mate!

Im not envious at all of him playing for Man U in the premiership and not Newcastle!

The fact is people recognize that he is a cheat! Not only is he a cheat, but he cheats every single game, without fail!

In England we don't respect that kind of thing, just as we don't like it when foreign players shake there hand in an attempt to get a player a yellow card or even sent off!

In Spain and other countries cheating is part of the game and is actually welcomed, Not In England!

Honestly, its nothing to do with envy, hes a cheat, plain and simple!

Who said i've changed my mind? From what i've read from PESFAN from people who have the full game it is far far too easy to score, Imo what made Pro Evo much better than Fifa was it was much harder to score while fifa you could close your eyes and score

I've just had loads of multiplayer games on Fifa tonight and not one game ended with any more than 3 goals, most matches ending 1-0 or 0-0.

Now if Pro Evo is cricket scores which people are saying is happening then no review will change my mind. For me scoring 10 goals a game is NOT fun!!

How many people on PESFAN are we actually talking about who have the full game .... 100,1000 .... 2? Maybe those people are actually really good at the game, they have the difficulty level at uber easy or there just talking BS. Seabass said himself they improved the keepers and we all know the keepers in PES are top notch anyway.

On another note don`t you find it ridiculously hard to score in fifa. Putting the ball in the net is easy when you are 1 on 1 with the keeper but its actually getting into the box thats hard to the point its infuriating.

Oh and do you have a problem when you take a corner and the opposition clears the ball out you cant get control of any of your players outside the box especially the player that the ball is gonna drop too? That really annoys me so much :(

It's Rob McLean from Scotland and another guy that made the euro finals that have the game, Rob is the Euro champion and Uk champ so he knows what he's talking about, the scores he's on about are from multiplayer matches with friends, nothing to do with the difficulty on uber easy.

Sry to keep asking fifa questions in the PES thread but hey.... Do you have player changing set to auto ( player nearest the ball ) or do you set it to manual you change player yourself, im thinking this may be causing my corner problem as I have it set to manual ?

Just to make it clear are you all talking about normal(at least to me) 10 min PES match against top difficulty comp or your friend on the same level?
Because in those matches I usually score 3-4 goals at the most. But if you play 20-30 mins matches you will probably score 8-10 goals. Very unreal if you compare it to the real match but point is to play football GAME and have fun. If I play good and my skill is good than it's natural to score goals, and I wouldn't want to have it any other way...

It was online dude but have no idea how many minutes each half, maybe UKHardcore could clear that up. Im a 10 minute man myself too, when you have mates round playing 10 minutes is sufficient for a game.

I did have it set to manual but now i have it 3/4's manual, so thats it 1/4 full if that makes any sense lol

I understand I`ll give that a bash tomorrow, Ive always set football games to manual since ISS days, ive never liked auto i feel as tho you aint really getting the full control of your team as you should.

Honestly, its nothing to do with envy, hes a cheat, plain and simple!

even toh he's a cheater, hes the best player in the uk and most prob in europe/world

Did anyone check out the PES08 review on IGN UK.....they totally seem to love it

But if a flaw as incidental as this prevented said players from buying PES 2008 altogether, they’d be missing out on the most realistic, intelligent and enjoyable football experience on console yet.
IGN UK Ratings for Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (PS3)

7.0 Presentation-More official teams than before but the Premier League still feels fake. How bothered you are by this is entirely down to personal taste. 8.0 Graphics
Visually sharp with superb animation, let down by the clunky crowd and occasional drop in frame-rate.
7.0 Sound-The commentary is decent enough, as is the in-match chants and crowd noise, but the menu music is awful unless you have a penchant for Euro pap.
10 Gameplay-Nothing comes close to PES in terms of the way it plays and how connected to your team and players you feel during a game. Absolutely magnificent.
9.5 Lasting Appeal-The single-player game will last months. The multiplayer – both on- and off-line – will take over your life for the next 12 months. 9.2

Overall Outstanding

Look these guys afterall like the game...

Marko Gardinic and Rob Mclean are two fellas many will have heard of, and now you know what they look like thanks to the pic above! Both of the guys were kindly given a final version of PES 2008 on PS3 by Seabass at the PES League 2007 tournament held in Sevilla, an award for reaching the final.

Over the past week they have been posting on a dedicated thread in the site's forum giving feedback on their experiences on the game. After fighting off many fans trying to buy the promos from them(!) they both manged to take some time out and let me know me their thoughts on the game so far.

First up is Marko (left in the pic):

"It feels a much faster game this year, pacey dribbling looks to be the best way to get goals. Ive had some issues with framerate and slowdown but not enough to ruin my enjoyment of the game. The new diving feature is a bit controversial but I like it as long as its not overused in online play. Its an improved game over PES6 in my opinion and I'd definitely recommend everyone to buy it."

Marko, who was the runner-up (no.2 in Europe ain't bad!), has spoken many times about the slowdown. It's also something many of the fans are concerned about. As was written in the IGN review though, both think that particular issue isn't bad enough to ruin your experience.

Here's what Rob had to say:

"I have probably played PES 2008 enough to make a judgement now. This is the first PES i have immediately been able to pick up and do what i want with. It is very different from what i am used to, very fast with dynamic end to end attacking. I have reservations over whether the blinding speed will be a good thing or a bad thing but after some time playing the game, you learn the ins and outs of it and it is the PES you know and love.

The shooting is superb, the goalkeepers are realistic and it is much easier to build attacks quickly from the back. This will definitely appeal to the casual gamer and hopefully with time, it will seem the perfect football game. It seems great just now but the sheer speed of the game is making me worried it could turn out to be a bit too arcadey. However, don't think i am being negative. PES6 was marred with some bad flaws and this game is a huge step up from PES6 and the latest Fifa. If you are a football fan, like i am, it is essential to own this game."

An extremely positive take on the game so far from Europe's no.1 PES player, who incidentally has recently joined with a professional gaming team. More on this here http://www.fnatic.com/ (http://www.fnatic.com/). (http://www.fnatic.com/.)

PS- to me PES faces look much better than fifa. It deserves an 8 in graphics. And HS a 9!

I wonder how much you guys give for Halo 3 graphics...i dont give more than a 6.5, while PES i agree with the 8.

The game is miles better than PES6, everyone who has played it says so. And the review is great, just face it. 10 for gameplay, 9 for lasting appeal and 8 for graphics thats great in my book and its exactly what a PES game needs!

Well thats what I did.
I bought Fifa08, and its worth the money while PES in my eyes is not.
PES will still be the better soccer game for me.
But I'll pass this year, I hope they really can make a next gen PES next year.
For now i enjoy Fifa08, always hated fifa for the sucky gameplay(for ref. my last fifa game was Fifa world cup 98 :D ). But this year I'm really surprised its that good. (wasnt convinced with the first matches on the demo, but how more i played how better it got)

There are people in north America who know a lot about football you know. I almost have more fun playing with PES options/tactics than the actual matches. I hate all American sports, I only love European football, maybe because I am from European decent?
I think people who buy this game are football fans no matter where they live. Thats the beauty about this sport, there are fans all around the world who share the same passion.

I'm keeping my order from Shopto as I can wait an extra few days. Not to mention it saves me £10!

You can use this link to find your local ASDA's phone number. Ask them if they have the game in stock. But I personally doubt they'll have it anytime before Thursday/Friday.

My father is a manager at an ASDA superstore and they don't recieve their games until the Thursday, and at midnight they put them on shelves because they are 24 hour stores, so if you do have to wait until Friday at least you can have it Thursday night/Friday morning.

I pre-ordered mine off play.com earlier so hopefully they will ship it out tomorrow and I will get it by wednesday.

Just listened to the podcast and it sounds like a disappointment to what we expected. The Edit Mode, you cant untuck the players shirts. I'm still getting the game because it's better than FIFA but Pro Evo; where will it be next year at this rate :-?

It'll lose alot of respect from this and fans won't be as passionate about the game considering FIFA is always improving

9.6</STRONG>Playability
Pick this up and you wont put it down until next year.
8.7</STRONG>Originality
The Teamvision feature is a nice touch although there isnt really much else too different.
9.0</STRONG>Graphics
Some of the players are disappointing and there is some slowdown, however the onfield action isn’t really affected.

The commentary has improved a great deal and the soundtrack compliments the game well.

Best soccer game on ps3 or not, but the game doesn't deserve such high scores. Bad message to send to Konami as well that a game with such big flaws is still getting such ratings. The gameplay is good though which is the most important.

WENB Receives PES 2008 On PS3! (http://www.winningelevenblog.com/2007/10/wenb-receives-ps3-version-of-pes-2008.html)

Finally!

A few hours ago the PS3 version of PES 2008 arrived at our offices! I'm currently playing the hell out of it for review purposes (obviously), but took some time out to let everyone know, and to post some pics of it

In the first pic you can even see my shadow taking the pic with my phone!
Right now I'm impressed with whats in front of me, but also a little concerned with the framerate issues. It was pretty bad at first, but the ability to install the game onto the HD certainly helped. Still trying to figure out how bad it really is. Its not affecting the way that I play, but something that simply shouldn't be in the game.
Anyone with questions, queries etc, leave a comment or drop me an email and I'll try answer the question on the podcast tomorrow. And yes the podcast has been delayed, we're going to do a special one for you guys tomorrow about our experiences with the game.
Make sure you tune in for that!

WENB Review

The Review: The Adam Perspective (http://www.winningelevenblog.com/2007/10/review-adam-perspective.html)

This has been one of the most difficult reviews I’ve ever done. Even more so because it’s on a game from the PES series. What is usually something easy to write, (write superlatives here etc), became something much more thoughtful and time consuming.

There’s no doubting many of you will have skimmed to the bottom to see that I gave the game 8/10. The difficulty of reviewing PES 2008 his year more than any other is rather than trying to justify why I didn’t give the game a 9 or even 10, I find myself trying to explain why it didn’t score much lower. How you find PES 2008 is going to be how you approach the game. Expect something groundbreaking and revolutionary then look away now. Expect the same addictive gameplay that will have you hooked until next year’s version, then you won’t be disappointed.

Without beating about the bush, PES 2008 on next-gen isn’t the title that it should’ve been. The most recent version on the PS2 gave Konami a fantastic starting block for the new next-gen era. To their credit they’ve developed the core gameplay from that version and evolved it into the most complete PES yet. One thing you will notice when you get onto the pitch is the feel of the game. It’s much more considered and heavy, with the ball and players carry much more weight to them. Besides this initial adjustment time needed, the game is the same as it ever was. You’ll be passing the ball about like a pro and stringing together some inspiring moves in no time. This similarity may be a sign of not much ambition shown by the developers, but to many it’s a case of ‘if it aint broke…’ etc etc. You can agree to both points, but you can’t get away with the fact that Seabass and his team have created a special game engine. To change it and risk losing an incredibly loyal fan base would be a catastrophe, and they’ve certainly played it safe.

While you may separate camp by sticking with the tried and trusted formula, everyone who picks up the game will be very satisfied with their experiences. And it’s on the pitch where the game still shines. As mentioned passing is still as crisp, with nice new animations to go with each distribution. The same goes for shooting, although you’ll need to give yourself some time to adjust to the slight change in its mechanics. In previous versions the outcome of your shot would depend on various situations (player skill, opposition pressing etc), and it’s much more integral now. This goes hand in hand with the goal keepers, who now are more skilled in shot stopping and one on ones – even if they do parry back into dangerous areas consistently. They anticipate where you are going to shoot much better, while covering all angles amazingly well. This leads to an even more satisfying feeling when you do score, if that’s possible. The ‘keepers animations also have been given a boost, making them look incredibly realistic when making those ‘for the camera’ saves. The same can be said for all the players, also specific player animations haven’t really been upped since last-gen. With more power to work with though they look even more lifelike, with players having more exaggerated movement when turning and tussling for the ball.

There’s something that many games can’t quite encapsulate, and that creating an emotional attachment with the player. It’s something PES does incredibly well, and something that gripped me the first time I played the game. Playing a Milan derby, I was locked in a tough battle until I scored a peach of a free kick with Pirlo minutes from the end. To say I jumped out of my seat and ran around the room screaming is an understatement! This had more impact with the player due to the incredibly detailed goal celebrations. When scoring a goal you really are treated to amazingly lifelike reactions, with the stars all having signature celebrations. These go out of the window when you score an important goal however, with players going mental and running over to the subs bench to get everyone involved!

Along with the feeling of scoring Seabass & co also have managed to make every player feel and play differently from one another. Players like Kaka and Seedorf can hold onto the ball easily and dictate the pace of the game, while Inzaghi can be brushed off the ball - if he’s not busy being caught offside! Perfect player representation has always been a factor in the series since it first emerged many years ago both visually and how everyone plays. And it’s visually where the game can, at times, look very much next-gen. Zoom into any of the well known player faces and you’ll witness an incredible attention to detail. Players like Michael Owen and Kaka are photo realistic, as are (unfortunately) the handsome Man Utd striking partnership of Tevez and Rooney. Like I mentioned, these details are only impressive when you zoom into the action. Once you pull the camera back the visual quality drops immensely, having the ‘what happened?!’ affect. It doesn’t ruin the experience by all means, but certainly leaves you questioning why the game suffers from slowdown. The same can be said for the crowd detail. While in the pre-match build up they look as detailed and animated as the players on the pitch themselves, once the game starts they become heavily pixelated and very ugly to look at.

Staying on the pitch, Konami have added something totally new to proceedings…DIVING! One subject that has been on the forefront of complainers minds is the ability to simulate. By pressing L1+L2+R1 your player falls to the ground trying to win a free kick or penalty. 90% of the time you will be cautioned by the referee, although I’ve been able to win quite a few penalties when playing the game. So far in my time playing PES 2008, I haven’t seen the computer try it on me yet. It will be interesting to see if it becomes an issue after prolonged play.

Another thing you’ll notice is the commentary change. For many years now Brackley and Brooking have been the two guys in the PES commentary booth, so it’s very sad to see them go. The new duo of Jon Champion and Mark Lawrenson do a decent job (Champion more so, Lawro not so much), although it’s a case of bad script more than anything else. While Champion seems to flow in his assessments quite well, Lawrensons ‘round-up’ ramblings feel like they’re straight from a script and get annoying very quickly.

Onto the front end, the game modes available in PES 2008 aren’t anything new. Whilst Master League now has a proper 2nd division and a few pics here and there to try and make it more involving, the impetuous to go on season after season doesn’t remain. Especially seeing as the teams that go into your intending league are never from the same country! The edit mode this year on next-gen gives with one hand whilst taking away with the other. The ability to scan your own face and team logo into the game is an important and much welcomed feature, and certainly adds to the realism you can re-create within the game. This unfortunately is the only high point in the mode as so many options have been minimised. Shirt templates and player edit functions have been severely stripped without reason. Along with this the menu screens are over complicated and bland, looking like an afterthought rather than a thoughtful inclusion.

Something that you won’t be able to get away from is the notable slowdown issues that the game suffers. When I played the first game I was stunned and shocked about the frame rate, its something I don’t expect from a next-gen game of any kind. After using the option to install onto the HD though things got considerably better, even though replays still are extremely choppy. You’ll also realise that playing in particular stadiums causes the slowdown to increase and make it more notable. The simple answer is to stay away from them, but to have to do that simply isn’t on. Added to the fact that the game only has 15 stadiums in the first place makes it totally unacceptable.
This considerable flaw to the game is the only major gripe that I have with PES 2008, and one of the reasons I wasn’t sure about whether to score it lower than an 8. In my eyes we shouldn’t have to accommodate slowdown and frame rate issues in next-gen, when it’s quite obvious the hardware can easily handle it. Lazy programming? Not understanding the hardware? Not enough time/people to complete the game? Whatever the reason, it’s certainly going to affect how many fans perceive the game.

Gradually for me the slowdown factor became less of an issue. After the initial shock of it being there, I started to enjoy the game for what it was. There been much talk about the core being too similar to its PS2 roots, but these roots actually save the game in the end. For all its flaws the same addictive PES gameplay is there underneath the underwhelming front end. It’s something you can’t get away from, and the reason why we’ve been playing the series for an incredible amount of years. Where this game lacks it much needed element to justify its existence on next-gen, the ‘soul’ of the game more than makes up for it. The essence of PES will strike a cord with everyone who picks up the controller and, while sounding like a cliché accustomed to the PES series, will keep you hooked until next years version. Surely, you can’t ask for much more than that?

And make no mistake, despite its superficial shortcomings; this is the best version of the game to date.

The game moves a bit faster, passing feels distinctly crisper, shooting on the Xbox 360 version (while still not as good as the PS2 d-pad) has been refined and the animation range, and hence moves, increased ever so slightl

And it’s buggy too, with disturbing frame-rate issues (especially in the replays), jaggies you could slit your wrists with, and the same bland stadiums and misinformed commentary that we remember from five years ago. In fact, we’ll go a step further and suggest that based on the presentation, PES 2008 was developed for the PS2 and ported to the PS3 and X360.

Apparently the 360 version ALSO has some framerate issues, not just the PS3.

When i get the game i ll post my own short review.

LEtdown because its not what they hoped for, still it got a 9.

Two guys here seem to hate PES 2008, UK Hardcore and Alsab...

You never said anything positive on the game, if you dont like it why keep posting here? Why never say anything good about it? I think the problem is you had you pre made assumptions on the game.

All the reviews say its fast but its still an amazing playable game.

I will love it for sure, specially with time put into it.

What i do hate though is they have turned it into a super fast arcade style game, for me Pro was easily the best football game because it was the most realistic.

PES is such a let down I just bought it today and it sucks. The Graphics sucks the gameplay is too fast. I am gonna say it, and it hurts me to say this cause I'm winning eleven fan since PS1, FIFA 08 is way better and I can't believe I am saying it FIFA is more realistic.

Fifa is horrible.

IGN scored the 360 version the same 9.2 as the PS3 version.

Apparently the only difference, besides obviously controls, is this:

compared to the PS3 version it runs more smoothly with far fewer drops in frame rate, but on the flip side there appears to be a weird distance filter which overlays the pitch, so the grass near the camera looks sharp, halfway up it’s a bit more blurred and in the distance it’s fuzzy. Normally that wouldn’t be a problem but the depth changes are fairly visible – two curved lines arc across the screen - especially on an HD TV, and while it won’t ruin your enjoyment of the game it does look a little odd.
So the PS3 version has more frame rate drops but does not suffer from this distance problem. Bottom line, both games are extreamly playable and manage to get the PES felling greatly.

Now that i think of it, Konami PRs lied about the game when they gave the first infos on the game...

PS3 Lead platform- Bogus.

PS3 Version 3 times better- Bogus.

New Engine for next gen- Bogus ( still PS2 engine)

Sony Helping out Konami- Bogus ( game has frame rate issues and it should be perfect).

Oh well, at least its still PES at the end of the day.

Has anyone heard about the PS2 version? If the PS3 and 360 version are sufferring from these issues it might be best to just get the PS2 version. It has more modes and the only thing it's missing is the HD look. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

I'll probably get it on the PS2 and get PES 2009 on the PS3 since konami know they dropped the ball and will hopefully fix it next time.

greetings from greece, just to let you know that i have the original game in my hands since last friday (also few hundred countrymen as well).

**important**

there was a huge issue of framedrops while playing however this was solved with the following action.

BEFORE PLAY THE GAME GO TO THE OPTIONS IN THE MAIN MENU AND SELLECT "INSTALL"

after installation the game is tottaly different. furthermore you must disable the staduim effects again from the options menu.

now a short review is that the game is way better than fifa and the gameplay is most likely the best that we have seen in the series, eventhough i would prefer a bit slower gameplay.

it is a 100% worth buy so dont worry, go for it.

the only minor problem is that when you watch a replay it seems that in the first replay there is a framedrop problem which cannot overpassed, that's all.

Konami have really ballsed this one up, haven't they?

The PS2 version is STILL the definitive version, with the 'next-gen' versions both lacking features.

Plus the PS3 version suffering from the slowdown like last years 360 effort. At least they've managed to iron out the slowdown in the 360 version this year.

I'm starting to think Konami should just give PES a year off next year and beef it up quite a bit to a true nxt gen game, because if Seabass is starting from scratch like he sais then this time next year we'l get the usual excuses about not having enough time.

After all was said and done, they gave it a walloping 9.2. If that doesnt change your minds than so be it. You can leave it, but i'll definitely take it over any other football game around, on any other console.

Tedmaul (a mod on PESFAN) has just got the game and reckons

Having now had a chance to play the full game of PES for about 6 hours tonight, i'd have to say FIFA.

Next gen FIFA on xbox 360 is a fantastic game, and it's great to seem them finally take the gameplay on to the next level. It's well balanced, the AI is good and the pacing is spot on. There's real satisfaction when you craft a goal.

PES is just too arcade this time - too fast, too easy, the ball moves like a marble on a skating rink and the goalkeepers are dreadful.

Add to this the fact that the presentation is awesome on FIFA (aside from the dodgy faces, which is where PES does win hands down) and once again pretty poor on PES, plus the fact FIFA have a great career mode that puts Master League to shame.

Nope, FIFA wins for me this year....I really think am going to need to buy fifa this year. Dont know why they have turned Pro Evo into a crappy arcade game???????????? Are they trying for more sales or did they see Fifa is now realistic so they went the oppisite way????????????

Another thing that is annoying me; please can we stop using the term 'next gen'. As far as I am concerned 'next gen' = PS4 or XBOX 3/720/Infinity. The current generation of consoles are PS3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. Thank you.

Pro G review i up and it aint looking pretty gentlemen

We were so shocked by the slowdown and frame rate problems that we dropped the resolution from 720p to standard to see if it had any effect. All it did was take the HD sheen off proceedings. Then we tried using the AV lead the PS3 comes bundled with to see if that helped. The only difference here was the graphics looked even worse than they do normally. Stunned, we plugged the HDMI cable back in and put the resolution back up to 720p just to give the game one, last chance. PES has given us so much pleasure down the years that it at least deserved that. We set up a game just as before, in the rain, in the same stadium and with wide view, and we experienced the same problems again.

Not bad at all, and worth it if it improves the slow framerate issues.

from what ive seen/read, really does seem like pro Evo has fallen short for its next gen debut, would have personally preferred it if they had delayed it 3 months and ironed out all the glitches!

By the sound of it they have........ This version is basically what pes 6 SHOULD have been on the 360..... they have sorted it out this year on the 360 but the problems that the 360 version had last year seem to have hit the PS3 now with all the slowdown problems :???:

All this BS is annoying. How can it have got a 9 from OPM and a 9.2 from IGN if it sucks? From OPM:

The game plays a lot slower than its PS2 counterpart, but that doesn't matter as there is always a tranisiton period between PES games. And some say it's too fast? I just want to get the game so I can see whether it was a decent purchase. But TBH, I don't buy a footy game each year so I don't really have much to compare it too.

EDIT: A GAFer posted this:

spent more time with the PS2 version again today.

The improved animation and ball physics is a huge step towards more realistic and methodical play. This IS the best PES/WE ever.

One of the important aspect of football is the positioning and angling of the body, and the movement of the ball at the players foot to keep possession, and to make good passing lanes. This has never been done so well in any of the previous WE games until now.

The ball doesn't stick to the dribbler's feet anymore. Even the best dribblers will have problems stringing move to move or even simply changing speeds. This is even more pronounced when defenders are running up against you trying to take the ball away.

Playing near the sideline is much much more realistic, and the way the dribblers move the ball to create space is so much more well done this time around. I really feel like the game took a big step towards replicating real life.

The difference between a highly ranked team and a lower ranked team is also more dramatic this time around I think, in more ways than simply worse individual techniques/abilities. The better teams are more organized, play with more variety and exploit defensive mistakes with higher accuracy. It could just be the new physics that makes me feel this way. Since you really feel the difference between teams that can employ its talents (better teams) and ones that do not (worse teams).

I'm really looking forward to playing this at home on PS3 now. I hope it's the same experience as the PS2 version.

Overall the game is great again, altho I wish they made the selection screen a bit less arcady.

I thought you couldnt play online yet.

BTW do you like the game?

Regarding Slowdowns i think Konami should release a PATCH to take care of it. Its the least they can do to PES fans.

I already sent them an e-mail...we should do something about it. They have to release a patch.

I never thought about a patch but Im still shocked there releasing a game with Slowdown!

There is no excuse for slowdown on a console IMO They have the hardware to work with and if it means dumbing down the AI or lowering the graphics, then that is what they should do.

Its a disgrace.

Yet Im still going to give them my money!
