I m happy with the same old gameplay...and just because the game is not revolutionary doesnt mean it should be a 7...its fun rigth? Its still pes.

Anyway i hope next year they push the envelop some more.

UkHardcore
09-26-2007, 16:09
So, it's good, but it could do with a graphics overhaul?

Surely they don't mean the game engine.

The game engine defo needs a large upgrade, you can only turn 8 ways ffs.

PES 2008 is an arcade game, dont know why but Seabass has throw out simulation this year.

Agreed, infact i'd say the keepers are worse this time round than PES 4

Honestly, hit the ball straight at them... they move out of the way to let it in, And Adriano still smashes the ball home from anyway :suspect::suspect::suspect:

Check out the goalkeeper vid a 3rd of the page down..

[QUOTE]Killzone 2? MGS? Gears of War? Bioshock? Motorstorm? Virtua Fighter 5? Even Fifa is a million miles away from what it was on last gen systems...I could go on...

Million miles away? Surely you are just joking:???: right? Except Motorstorm which is a new IP only thing that got big improvement so far from the last gen is graphics. Can we call it a revolution? I dont think so, its more of evolution to me.
FIFA millions miles away from what was on last gen? That's the biggest BS I have heard on this forum. I played the demo and that game sucks big time IMO. And you call that a revolution? lol

Fifa is a huge Revolution compared to the last gen games. Its not great, but its at least half decent now (better than PES at the moment). PES is still stuck in last gen mode, even the graphics are poor. They managed to even make the gameplay worse in a lot of aspects compared to the last gen versions. You'll see for yourself when you play the demo. The keepers are terrible, the passing is just wierd, the dribbling is like PES4 (twitchy and totally unrealistic) and it all adds up to a poor football game. Its the 1st PES/ISS that I wont be getting in over 10 years and that says a lot.

I dont understand your attitude sir. Are you some PES hating fanatic?

Seriously dude are you on crack on something?

UkHardcore
09-26-2007, 19:46
Zenkai do you honestly like the demo?

And yes Fifa is defo a million miles away from what it was on PS2, yes it still not very good but if you cant see the difference then am guessing you have not played it.

I dont own 360 so I didnt play the demo of PES.

All I know about FIFA is that I hate it. EA forgets that game needs to be a game and not some cluster of animations that mimic real football.

PSN Demo Not So Close... (http://www.winningelevenblog.com/2007/09/psn-demo-not-so-close.html)

Right now this is totally unofficial, but I've heard some pretty bad news for the PS3 owners who were hoping to be able to download the PES 2008 demo today. As many of you know Sony only update PSN every Thursday, meaning if the owners were going to get a demo it would be today.

After talking to a few guys in the business though things look grim. It's now most likely the demo will be released next Thursday, with the consolation of a new video put up instead.

So far this hasn't been confirmed, and to be fair I certainly hope I'm wrong. We'll let you know as soon as we hear anything.

It's another downer on Sony's behalf. We know it's something Konami have no control over, let's just hope Sony get it sorted out asap.

"...Theres no other game on PS3 that you're guaranteed to be playing obsessively

this time next year. PES is magic because it is football in all its glory and

madness, and as such you're never really finished with it."

Its from OPM and thatīs a great score!

Regarding the demo i ve already metioned that probably it will not come.

Check out this beautiful video of PES 2008. It's neard HD quality. Now can anyone tell me if it plays at the same speed as the demo? Because from what i saw it looks ok. The only thing i didn't like was the fact that i can now see how the players only move in eight directions. Sure, the animation masks it somewhat, but Seabass needs to address that to give us more options.

http://playscope.com/@@@15777-pro_evolution_soccer_2008.html&medias=Videos

It looks great and i can't wait for it to come out.

Also, is there any word on if there will be worldwide servers?

So you think it looks nxt gen but you dont think it uses 10% power of the ps3... honestly you make me laugh throughout this thread. Unless you have just stepped up from a ps2 they graphics are awful!!

And ditch the 360 to make it more nxt gen? Surly you mean the PS2 as it's the PS2 holding things back.

yeah I stept up from PS2, what's wrong with that? I find PES graphics better than FIFA.

I didn't say it doesn't use 10% of PS3 power, I said SPE-s, next time read with your brain on, okay?

And again I didn't say ditch 360 to make it next gen. I said ditch 360 in a near future possibly after PES09 and make best from PS3 hardware which is undeniable stronger than 360.

PS2 version is here because of 120 mil PS2 out there. But PS2 version is not what is holding back this game. It is Konami decision to publish PES on every known platform to make more green stuff and I don't blame them because PES never sells like FIFA on PS2.

Im putting you on my ignore list...

A huge thanks to ThomasGOAL for this news. Today in an interview with Georges Fornay, Chairman of PlayStation France, it was confirmed Sony plan to launch a PES 2008 PS3 bundle in November. Confirmed as an exclusive bundle for Sony, right now no one is too sure if its an offer that will stay in France.

Find the full interview here:

Not a biggie as Im sure retailers will be doing their own bundles when the game hits, but news nonetheless.

Your's,

I know it won't happen but if this bundle comes to the U.S then i'm getting it for sure.

Brand new commentary by John Champion and Mark Lawrenson.

No way am I putting up with him! I hate him commentating IRL, never mind listening to him in a game!

I have played PES2008 on PS3. When I first played the demo on Xbox360 I was a little dissapointed. For some reason the PS3 version feels or looks a little better. There are some framerate issues in the game. Specially in the replays. There is a slight slowdown when you play sometimes but it didnīt bother me at all. You barely notice it. Only the replays are the problem. Good news is the players look a better on the PS3 version. The graphics just look a little sharper.

I have been playing FIFA for a week now, but to be honest PES is just more fun. :-D

Edit: I think the version I played will be the final one. I donīt know if the framerate problem on the replays will be fixed.

IGN PES interview with Seabass

Considering he's the brains behind the critically acclaimed Pro Evolution Soccer series, Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka likes to keep a low profile. Indeed, when the PlayStation 3 version debuted at Leipzig in August it was notable not because it was the first time PES was playable on a next-gen Playstation, but because Seabass wasn't there to show off his highly-anticipated baby.

But, despite his knack for steering clear of the limelight IGN was granted an audience with the man that made PES, to talk about what we can expect from the next in the series and what elements of his games make him most proud.

IGN: What are the main additions to PES 2008 over PES6?

Seabass: Obviously, it will be the first next-gen format on the PS3. Since we started on next-gen formats last season we have finally had time to make big changes that are much more noticeable in the game. For example, visually it's clear to see we changed a lot. We also redesigned the menus, plus the models of the players are much more beautiful. Players will notice that right away.

We have also introduced our new Teamvision AI. This is a sophisticated AI programme that learns and adapts according to the player's style of gameplay.

http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/824/824000/winning-eleven-pro-evolution-soccer-2008-20071001051148055.jpg

IGN: Can you explain how the Teamvision AI system learns from the way people play?

Seabass: If it's attacking AI, when you get the ball back from the CPU it will remember how you did it. So, the next time the CPU attacks, it will do so differently, maybe passing the ball around faster or changing the timing of dummies. When defending, the Teamvision AI learns how a player prefers to attack and changes its tactics accordingly. For instance, if a player often attacks down the side then the CPU will try to have their defenders take care of the wings.

On top of that, each team has its own strategies, to become more aggressive when attacking or defending depending on the flow of the match. Overall, this AI helps make the flow of the game close to the real football match.

IGN: What new moves will feature in the game and how will players be able to pull them off?

Seabass: We cannot say which but there are plenty of new moves in the game. When we say moves it's not just about a single, certain move either. Instead there are more subtle things, such as the timing of passes, the start of runs… We've tweaked and changed these timings and that affects the way the game plays, so much so it often feels like some of the moves are new.

IGN: How difficult was it creating the next generation of PES while still keeping the famed gameplay and control at its core?

Seabass: It was really, really tough, because we knew that this was going to be the stepping stone for taking our title into the next gen. We realised that past PES games were pretty much close to perfect - we tweaked the games every year and continued to do so for a long time, so it was natural for the game to be good. However, we knew we'd have to start afresh for the next-gen game.

IGN: What new modes will feature in the PS2 game?

Seabass: There are two new things. Firstly, there's World Tour Mode, in which you have to go around the world and battle it out against the club teams. For every match there's a mission you need to accomplish, such as 'come from behind and win after 75 minutes into the game', 'perform a hat trick', 'score from a set piece' and so on. To win you need to fulfill these conditions against all the 50-plus club teams in the game. For core PES players, this new mode will undoubtedly be exciting to play.

The Community Mode is also new. It keeps records of all the games you play against friends, so you can see who scores the most and the percentage of wins you notch up, as well as who's the most consistent scorer and so on. You can also keep track of two-v-two matches, to see which pairing works best.

IGN: Will there be new teams and leagues in the game?

Seabass: We have increased the number of teams this year, yes, and it's not at the expense of other features either, which we're happy about. There are plenty of new licensed club teams such as Tottenham Hotspur, RSC Anderlecht and Spartak Moscow, as well as official national teams like Brazil, Scotland and Portugal. In total there are now more than 250 teams.

IGN: How has the Master League been expanded for the next generation versions?

Seabass: I finally accomplished one of the things I wanted to do for a long time, which was increase the number of teams in the league from 16 to 20. Now they look and work as authentically as real football leagues. It's not a huge point but it has always been something I wanted to do.

We have also upgraded the glitter side of the Master League, by adding weekly reports, displaying the replays and highlights of the match in the main menu… We really wanted to build something that would make users feel more involved with the players and the club teams they create and manage. We have also added a 'popularity' rating for each club, which affects negotiations when transferring players.

IGN: Is there one element of PES 2008 you are most proud of?

Seabass: I am most proud that we created something that surpasses PES6. In terms of AI and the way the game plays, I think this creates a new game to the PES of old. The traditional PES graphics have improved too and I'm proud we have accomplished both - the graphics and the gameplay - at the same time. You will have a great time with your friends, I guarantee that!

In previous versions of PES released in america, were you able to change commentary languages?I'm not sure if the NTSC version of PES2008 will have all the languages. Interesting read about the PS3 version on http://uk.ps3.gamespy.com/playstation-3/konami-ps3-soccer-project-untitled/816313p1.html

It's a new year, and a new, permanent title. For Europe, it won't be Pro Evolution Soccer 7. For North America, it won't be Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (http://uk.ps3.gamespy.com/playstation-3/konami-ps3-soccer-project-untitled/). Instead it's just Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 in both regions, so there'll be less confusion for everyone. Not only does the game have a new title, it has a new cover athlete. Manchester United's invaluable Portuguese midfielder Cristiano Ronaldo is the new face of the franchise, and we think it's a symbolic gesture. Ronaldo has been the subject of a great deal of praise, fanfare, and awards over the past year, much like the series has. With that in mind, it wasn't too hard to figure out where to hop on a kiosk at Konami's booth in Leipzig: we just had to look for a giant image of Ronaldo's face.

At last year's Games Convention, the series's producer, Shingo "Seabass" Takatsuka, made an appearance at the show to unveil the first glimpse of PES 2007 on next-gen. This year, however, there was no Seabass in sight to show off the PS3 debut. Maybe Konami preferred to spring that cash for Kojima's appearance? We don't know. However, after playing at least a round on each console, once to a crushing defeat, then a tie on 360, and finally a victory on the PS3, we can confidently say that it feels pretty similar to last year's game on 360, and oddly, it feels a little more fluid on the PS3.

Let us explain, before anyone pulls the fanboy alarm. First, ever since the game's official announcement and screens, we've been aware of the implementation of Team Vision, which will supposedly give the game some very sophisticated AI that learns your patterns and moves and adapts over time. That means that your usual rush to the other end of the pitch to make a cross to someone near the goal box will eventually get shut down hard. Your sloppier passes that aren't particularly realistic will get intercepted. Quite frankly, the computer will learn that you have some predictable moves, and it will take measures to smite them. At least, that's what we've heard.

We've also heard that the game has more animations than PES 2007. That's where things get sticky. We played two rounds of PES 08 on 360, and we noticed that the controls felt a little tighter than last year, although it wasn't drastically different. Also, we noticed that some of the visuals got cleaned up after last year's game. That's not to say that it's a prettier game than FIFA 08, but then, has PES ever been better looking than FIFA? It's safe to say, however, that the pitch actually looks like one from a next-gen game, and less like an upscaled version of Winning Eleven 9 played back on a 360.

On the PS3, we weren't happy with the fact that we couldn't configure the controls in the demo; they were defaulted to match the Xbox 360 mapping. If you've followed our coverage of PES 07, you'll know that we're not fans of the default control scheme on the 360, which uncomfortably puts your modifiers and turbo on the bumpers instead of the triggers. It makes for awkward play when you need precise, comfortable controls. On the PS3, this is made worse by the fact that the current-gen version's controller layout has always worked well. Even so, we really saw the differences between not only this game and current-gen (you'd have to be blind not to), but this version and its Microsoft counterpart. The animations that Konami has trumpeted for this game seem far more evident in the PS3 version. The number of ways that we took Kakŋ into feints and stepovers while playing as Brazil far outnumbered what we saw last year. When we sent a defender out to stop our opponent's Saviola from getting too close to the box, the way that he made a sliding tackle looked quite different from his teammate's. In spite of its controls, we really saw these improvements with the game's debut on Sony hardware.

The other big news this year is that you'll have adjustable option files. This was another big bone of contention we had with PES 07: you couldn't adjust your player names, jerseys or rosters. That meant that North American gamers had a product that gave them a decent game of soccer, but also had expired rosters (thanks to the game's release after the January transfer window closed) and there was no way to adjust trades on teams. Now, you can edit that stuff, although we wonder about the ease of trading option files, as Konami seems to have cracked down on the unauthorized trading of files that have imported logos and images from English Premiership teams.

As for the other versions of the game, we're not sure how much Team Vision will affect the PS2 and handheld editions, mainly because there was no PR at the booth to explain anything; instead, we got some guy with a key who reset a machine for us when it crashed. For now, we think that the PS2 version is probably maxed out in regard to its capabilities and what Konami can do on the hardware, save for fixing online matchmaking. Same goes for PC. The PS2 game didn't look too flattering on the LCD displays showing it off on the floor, and we hope that it will be cleaned up before its release. The PSP version seems to look the same as last year's, including our issues with disappearing hair palettes. No word on what will be different there, either. We tried a few minutes with the DS version, and it seems that Konami is fairly content with continuing to work with a similar engine to last year's game, which we weren't huge fans of.

As of now, we're not sure which countries have official kits secured, but the demo features Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, France and Turkey. We're hoping that the English, Dutch, and Italian kits are still officially licensed for this year's game, just as they were last year. Besides that, our initial dive into Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 showed us a game that's still a work in progress. The Xbox 360 version seems to build upon last year's game in a few positive ways, although we're more impressed with what the Konami team has managed to squeeze out of the PlayStation 3's hardware, where we saw much more of the promised animations in play. No matter what, however, we at GameSpy hold the series in rather high regard, and eagerly anticipate more playtime with it in the future.

i posted the same reply somwhere...and im too lazy to write a new one :P so here is a copy paste..
xbox360 is not the leading platform for sure....the only reason u see an xbox360 controller is because xbox uses directX like the pc platform which means that the pc version is probably a port from xbox....remember ps3 uses OpenGL.....i played the demo yesterday and my first impressions are it sucks!!! the player motions are realistic....but on the pitch its a chaos...i have the feeling the players and the ball are running on ice...a little too fast..the tempo should be much slower.....its hard to control the ball and the players.....its just not the same feeling when playing....
some bad textures....probably old drivers...need to upgrade...players look very nice...the A.I is ok (top player) hope it will be better with the full version....i just hope that the pc version isnt a xbox port......

Dont worry about the online, you wont need to sign in like in PES6 because you have a unified nick for every game...just enter and play online.

News update! (http://www.winningelevenblog.com/2007/10/news-update.html)

WENBs very own Mr Adam was today at a trade show in Birmingham of all places and got to play a near final build of the game that we are all patiently waiting for, here are the main points that I managed to translate during the phone call we have just had

The game actually plays slower than the 360 demo that we have been playing for a few weeks
In saying that the 360 version plays a slightly quicker game than the PS3 version(Yeah, that confused me as well. Lets move on though eh)

The PS3 version looks a bit more washed out but is still graphically sound
The 360 version looks crisper but with it a bit more cartoony. The colours seem a lot more vivid
Edit mode on the next gen has been drastically reduced as expected:
Only 9 sets of boots to choose from and kits styles are also limited to a set number of patternsAdam was really impressed with how the game played on both consoles, there seemed a more realistic pace to it. He couldnt stop waffling on about how nice it felt to play and how superb everything was! I had to cut him off before the call turned into one I would have to pay Ģ1.50 a minute for!

The version played by Ad is as close to the final version of the game available. Issues regarding gameplay and graphics could easily be resolved before release, whereas the content (teams, features etc) will be the same in the final version.

Much Love

So taking from this the final build will :

Be slower than the demo, more realistic :-D

This is hugely disappointing, boots make a big difference for me, as do kits.

I hate FIFA 08 as a game, but the kits make the game look very nice from a distance, PES 2008 will play far better but its about time it looked nice!

On the PC the game can be patched to look 100% official but without extensive editing options on the PS3 people who play with Chelsea, Liverpool, Man U or Arsenal allot, or any other premiership team infact are going to be hugely disappointed!

I have to say i m dissapointed at the Edit mode...

Most multiplatform games look "washed out" in comparison, less colour but in a football game with the different kits and the grass textures, this can't be more realistic can it? Sounds like port from the Xbox 360 version. We need this confirmed, many titles that appear like this on the PS3 were actual ports of the Xbox 360 versions.

I'm disappointed with the Edit Mode. Why is it lesser? Other than the actual game play this is what sets Pro Evo apart from FIFA. It's what many were expecting last year on the Xbox 360 version but it wasn't there for some reason. Now Konami have been working on this game for 2 years, and there is hardly any Editing?

It's rather conflicting as there was a Stadia Editor/Builder tool from the screenshots we saw a few months ago. How they can incorporate such a tool but not include a full editing mode?

Why are Konami just not bothering anymore?

You dont have to be abnoxious and you should respect other members, specially older ones.

Thats a PC screen, thatīs why it looks worse...you will have to edit the Arsenal kit though.

Why are you always bashing PES? If you are really dissapointed good luck finding a better footy game man.

And PES is not a Port from the 360...for whatever reason it has less color, but in my book in a footy game thats better, it makes it more realistic and not too cartoony like the guys in the blog say.

If you use your aussie psn you will be waiting weeks till after it is released overseas....

and anyway its only a month or so till it comes out here... November 8th is the day i got told today when picking up madden... (i know its crap but i'm just going to use eb's 7 day return policy...). Awesome demo or crap demo or no demo = all of us are getting PES anyway... It would be nice but...

demo update

As you all know, the PES 2008 demo has been in Sony's hand for quite some time now. Yet there has been no verification as to whether it will be available to download on the PSN tomorrow. We have attempted to find out news from Konami however they are not sure what the status of the demo is at this moment in time.

We will be updating the blog in about 10 hours time once we get some clarification on this highly debated and anticipated arrival. Check back in a few hours people. The PSN updates at 6pm GMT every Thursday. Fingers crossed the demo will go live, we'll let you know as soon as we know!

I don’t see why ppl are getting on Sony’s back about this!

From what I’ve been told the demo that was handed over to Microsoft and Sony is the Leipzig show playable demo, now for anyone that has seen it or played that demo can testify the ps3 version was no where near up to scratch, partly due to the ps3 version feeling so underwhelming and the 360 version looking slightly better.

So this begs the question, why would sony want to release a demo that doesn’t do the final game justice? the logical answer would be they wouldn't

On a side note, the latest build of the game was available to the press at Leipzig (this is the demo that SHOULD'VE been put on psn) as it did the PS3 version justice, it looked vastly improved compared to the show demo, visuals looked sharper and more realistic compared to the 360 but more importantly the gameplay, u knew you were playing pro evo!

I don't see why would Sony hold out demo of PES? because it's not good? 360 version is not shining star either... it's just the demo, if it have some issues we PES fans would dismiss them and just say that final version will be better. Look at HS demo. It have issues too but did it stopped people from buying game? No it didn't and I don't think PES demo would too.
Why did skate demo come 1 week before PSN on Live? They just happened to scrap demo for PSN 1 week after Live?? Come on... Some deal is definitely up between MS and developers.

I'm a massive PES fan but this game plays just as good and I know this will keep me entertained until PES 2008 hits the shelves.

I don't understand why they can only update on a Thursday? Seems lame to me, should update whenever they have something new, keep people searching through the store everytime they switch on their PS3.

Xbox live has been running for a while now so they are running smooth, it will be the same for PSN, give them time and they will sort it.

i haven't read the recently posted stuff but let me guess this is what's been posted

1.this is the reason Live has a monthly fees
2.im sorry to say this but psn s.u.c.k.s
3. these things happen during the development period just give them time we'll get the demo soon enough
4.this is an outrage im selling my ps3 for a xbox 360

PSN doesnt suck, the way i see it its picked up a lot, sony is getting good content every week, so what if it stumbles sometimes. Im sorry to say this but because we think we should get a demo for PES this week and we speculate to make sure we get it, it doesnt mean sony has to put up with it...

Good. Anyone stupid enough to even think about trading their PS3 for an Xbox because of a demo coming late doesn't deserve a PS3.

Kindly get out of this thread. Now.

The game will work on your PS3 only if you have a HDTV or a TV capable of displaying a PAL signal .I'm fairly sure the online will work, but you will encounter quite a bit of lag.

about online play will it have world wide servers or region specific servers because if it has region specific servers its going to s.u.c.k. being a u.s player theirs probably only going to be like 50 players at the most LOL

I'm a little surprised that much of the game is still shrouded in mystery, such as the features it will have, the extensiveness of the Master League, a review of the Edit Mode, and especially the Online features.

I'm with u Apollo, there is soo less info on the game released. But i guess Konami would suddenly wanna release all the info so that the game has even more hype. But i'd disagree
I hope the time and trouble for the game is well worth it, cos all eyes are on Konami now to deliver the 'new'-gen version.
jn **** u sony and konami for not giving us the demo already.

I know, this is something that I am worrying about !! I am living in U.S., owning a Jap version PS3, now I am trying to get the Eur version of PES... i am definitely not buying the U.S version because of the quote above, probably only 50 ppl online only... lol...

Some good news and soem bad news. Depending on what you want and what you expect. I'm just glad the gameplay is still intact as a simulation. Plus i'm not into the whole editing boots so that doesn't concern me.

W.E.N.B. : PES 2008 Impressions (http://www.winningelevenblog.com/2007/10/wenb-on-location.html)

Just got back from a few fun days at a trade event in Birmingham, and boy have I got a lot to talk about! After taking in the delights on offer (Call of Duty 4, Mario Galaxy, Assassins Creed etc.), I was treated to an extremely up-to-date code of PES 2008!

This was mainly thanks to both Michael Rotchell and Gareth Evans, senior members of the Konami sales team. Not an event where they were supposed to be showing off a near final version, but were kind enough to let me have a look for the benefit of the blog.

I was like a kid in a candy store when Michael booted up the game on a PS3, connected to a nice 40inch Sharpe TV. After seeing him (and me for a bit) getting beaten by Germany playing as England, I took the opportunity to take a look through the menu's and familiarise myself with the new look. My main interest, like many viewers, was to check out the editing functions available this year. Unfortunately it wasn't what it was lived up to be, editing wasn't a step up from the current gen options. Sure there's the ability to scan your own face in and pop in logo's & sponsors of your favourite unlicensed teams, but the basic functionality just wasn't there.

First off the 9 boots that we've seen are all whats on offer. Along with that the preset boots can't be edited. In PE6 on the PS2 you could at least create boots that resembled other brands, not this year on next gen I'm afraid. Then when checking through kit editing options I realised that the amount of preset designs to choose from have dramatically been decreased. Lets hope the new sponsor/logo import feature makes up for this.

Feeling a little bemused by the editing, or lack of, I started a match. Choosing the mighty Milan vs the not so mighty Tottenham, I was greeted with a new option allowing you to change the grass patterns on the stadiums. As previously rumoured, there is absolutely no option to edit stadiums any further than the design of the playing surface. Ranging from diamond, squares and circles shapes, there were around 5 different looks you could create to the 15 stadiums on offer. Yes you read right, just 15 stadiums!

After having a mixed first 5 mins with the game I was ready to kick off. Choosing 3 guys to always go up for corners (Nesta, Inzaghi and Ronaldo should do it) the match started. Quickly popping the game into wide cam I was treated to one of the best experiences I've had with a Pro Evo game...EVER. Gone was the frustration regarding the underwhelming front end, the gameplay is where its at and PES 2008 has it in abundance.

The first thing to hit me was the slow pace. It's been a while since playing an advanced version in Leipzig, so it was much clearer for me compare the two versions. All I can say is that it's very close to the speed of Fifa 08. The X360 version was a little quicker and a little brighter in its colours, but it was pretty much the same. Gone were the players zipping around at an alarming pace in the demo, everything seemed more considered and lifelike. It was great to be passing the ball about, creating some beautiful moves and scoring some special (and meaningful) goals. I even managed to dive and grab a penalty! At first I also found it difficult to score, the 'keepers are certainly miles better than the demo. They are fantastic on 1-on-1 situations, closing down the angles very quickly.

The feeling of playing PES was there. Whether that's a good thing or bad remains to be seen with some of the fans, as perhaps its a sign of the series not really moving on. It certainly feels familiar. In my eyes though that's a good thing, it was a pleasure to play, and left me with the feeling that I'd just played a game that I'll be playing for many months to come.

The build that I played was around 3 weeks old, and had some issues that I was assured will be fixed in the final versions. I noticed slowdown on replays and corners, as well as some loss of detail when in wide cam - the boots all went to black, and you couldn't even see the rain!

Overall though it was a great experience, I certainly feel honoured to have had time with the game. It's going to be keeping many people occupied when its hits on the 26TH October! Thanks again to Gareth and Michael for letting me have a bash, make sure you keep in touch guys!

More on the final version in the coming weeks, we should have them very soon.

Yours,

Adam

One more preview:

Just three weeks to go. Still, if you can't wait that long for a taste of the full game, fear not, as we've just returned from a four-hour playtest of the latest (approx 90% complete) PS3 code. We did try the 360 code, but bafflingly, the shoot and pass controls insisted on defaulting to the trigger buttons, making any kind of dissection virtually impossible. So without further delay, let's get to it...

If you've had a chance to check out the demo, you'll already know roughly what to expect from the general pacing. It's still quick but there also appears to be a greater emphasis on player skill when it comes to pulling off tricky passes and through balls. PES2008 seems to possess an ever so slightly more tactical edge than its predecessor, while never compromising on the excitement levels. FIFA 08 may have taken the realism route this year, but Konami's effort has kept one foot firmly placed on both sides of the fence, with a slight bias towards arcade action.

Example: Players were far more flexible and lithe, and were able to flick the ball off their chests then turn with greater fluidity than in PES6, making for more flowing matches. Conversely (and perhaps this will be tweaked in the final version) star players such as Ronaldinho ran like they were on rails, enabling us to smoothly pull off dribbles that made Maradona's surge against England in ‘86 look like an everyday occurrence. If you're more fond of dribbling than a toddler with an over active saliva gland, you're likely to be in seventh heaven if Konami don't make any last minute alterations, though some of you will no doubt be spitting bile at just how easy it can be to bamboozle opposition defences with more skilful players.

This next one you're either going to love or hate. Diving. Yes, after much cogitation Konami has finally decided to include the dirtiest trick in the book (bribing referees aside) though it struck us as strange that the game was bereft of an option to turn this feature off. Hopefully, Konami will have had the foresight to put this into the final game and help prevent the usual online pissing contests (between die-hard fans with diametrically opposed views) that generally arise from development decisions such as these. The question here is, does it work? Well, kind of. While it was fun to take the odd opportunistic tumble, the constant stream of yellow cards was a pretty sobering experience. In fact, we didn't have a single decision go our way and not once did we see the AI try to use this tactic. What's more - and here's hoping this is sorted before release - we were even yellow carded after taking a dive when there wasn't an opposition player within a ten-meter radius. Ludicrous!

http://www.eurogamer.net/img/ArticlePage/zoom_butt.gif (http://www.eurogamer.net/view_screenshot.php?image=assets/articles//a/8/4/8/0/1/PES1.jpg.jpg)http://images.eurogamer.net/assets/articles//a/8/4/8/0/1/a_med_PES1.jpg.jpg (http://www.eurogamer.net/view_screenshot.php?image=assets/articles//a/8/4/8/0/1/PES1.jpg.jpg) The Master League has received a revamp this year.

While we're on the subject of cards, refs still seemed a little too keen to dish out the yellow and reds for slightly mistimed slide tackles, which when timed correctly, often resulted in the opposition just getting the ball straight back anyway.

Let's move onto ball physics, which admittedly, is always a highly subjective topic. This build saw a decent improvement over last season's pinging pig's bladder and there was a far greater sense of weight to how the ball moved. Slow passes bobbled as they skimmed over the grass, while thunderous shots looked as though they'd been fired out of a cannon. Bounces were also slightly more muted (no bad thing), resulting in free flowing games containing fewer farcical pinball incidents.

These refined ball physics also complemented the revamped passing and shooting controls. This year it seems we're back to having more control over pass and shot power, while through balls are far tougher to pull off. However, when we did manage to thread the eye of the needle, the teeth grindingly annoying defender teleportation feature (whereby the last defender would miraculously outpace you once you were through on goal) from last year's version didn't seem nearly as evident here.

http://www.eurogamer.net/img/ArticlePage/zoom_butt.gif (http://www.eurogamer.net/view_screenshot.php?image=assets/articles//a/8/4/8/0/1/PES2.jpg.jpg)http://images.eurogamer.net/assets/articles//a/8/4/8/0/1/a_med_PES2.jpg.jpg (http://www.eurogamer.net/view_screenshot.php?image=assets/articles//a/8/4/8/0/1/PES2.jpg.jpg) Games are still quick and action packed.

Keepers also looked more realistic, moving with feline flexibility to palm away shots and get down low to push away stinging drives. They also seemed to react later when unsighted before flying into an Oliver Khan-like rage and bellowing at their defenders. However, there were some problems here, too. Perhaps it was just a balancing issue, but keepers tended to spill the ball rather too easily and palm power shots directly into the path of onrushing attackers, a flaw that was most evident (and exploitable) when playing in multiplayer.

Clearer in-game player fatigue, a revised quick freekick option (whereby you can now watch the player grab the ball if it's nearby and quickly resume play), increased crossing accuracy when you make the player look up, more player animations to refereeing decisions, beefier sound effects and some great player likenesses, including a double chin on Ronaldo that practically trails on the ground (though as ever, other well known players were barely recognisable) all proved excellent touches, though we have to admit to really disliking the new behind the keeper angle when facing penalties, which just felt, well, a bit crap really.

Also new this year is a revamped Master League featuring bolstered player interaction features (admittedly we only had a chance to take a quick look at this and will reserve any judgement till the finished version) and a Track Record section that charts achievements and sets specific goals e.g. win ten penalty shootouts or score a 35-meter goal. Track Record will also keep a record of how many games you win, lose and draw, and even provide you with a set of grades for your tackling, passing, and attacking abilities.

http://www.eurogamer.net/img/ArticlePage/zoom_butt.gif (http://www.eurogamer.net/view_screenshot.php?image=assets/articles//a/8/4/8/0/1/PES3.jpg.jpg)http://images.eurogamer.net/assets/articles//a/8/4/8/0/1/a_med_PES3.jpg.jpg (http://www.eurogamer.net/view_screenshot.php?image=assets/articles//a/8/4/8/0/1/PES3.jpg.jpg) You'll either love or hate the new dive feature.

As you can probably see from the screenshots and given that many of you will have played the demo, you'll be well aware that PES2008 is unlikely to win any awards in the next-gen visual stakes, especially when compared to FIFA 08's highly buffed graphics. Overall, PES2008's visual changes appeared to be more incremental than revolutionary, ranging from the more animated but still basic-looking crowds to the contemporary yet hardly eye-popping menus. Perhaps the only serious gripe was the way that players sometimes looked like they were pulling off a pair of pigs with their fists while running. Otherwise, the graphics and animations were generally solid.

While Pro Evo 2008 is unlikely to be a revolutionary leap forward for the series, it certainly looks to be an improvement over last year's version, tackling several key issues and adding some great new tweaks and features. It's too early to make concrete predictions right now, as the version we played was still around 10% off completion, but things are certainly looking positive, despite the odd concern. Just three weeks to go...

Thats what I thought before I got the 7 day ban. I was expressing my huge disappointment in Sony for not releasing the demo, and before I knew it I got the 7 day ban for 'flamebaiting'.

So criticizing PS3 or Sony is not allowed in here?

By the way, what is the best way (cheapest) of importing the UK/EU version to the US?

Heres a FAQ the WENB team compiled for importers:

Importing PES 2008 & WE 2008 FAQ's (http://www.winningelevenblog.com/2007/09/importing-pes-2008-we-2008-faqs.html)

http://bp3.blogger.com/_Qp7Fv2WWaew/RvGJSK68rXI/AAAAAAAAA7Q/ffSl9TrbuTo/s200/original.jpeg (http://bp3.blogger.com/_Qp7Fv2WWaew/RvGJSK68rXI/AAAAAAAAA7Q/ffSl9TrbuTo/s1600-h/original.jpeg)Since today's announcement that North America would not see the release of our beloved game until Spring '08 most gamers based in North America are obviously looking to import the game. I will start off by clearing up some confusion following the announcement of the Japanese release before going into details.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (PS3 & Xbox 360)
Released Europe 25th October 2007

Winning Eleven 2008 (PS3 & Xbox 360)
Released Japan 22nd November 2007

Both games will pretty much be the same, except for regional differences such as Languages (PES 2008 - Multilingual, WE 2008 - Japanese only), Commentary etc. Now the big question, can I import this game and play it on my console? Well it depends on what console you own. It does get very complicated so read carefully and if you have any problems then contact a member of the team for advice.

Xbox 360 Owners - FORGET ABOUT IT:
Due to the strict regional coding enforced by Microsoft you won't be able to play a game from outside your region e.g. North American fans can't import the European or Japanese version to play on their US Xbox 360.

Playstation 3 Owners:
Playstation 3 owners on the other hand are a much luckier. If you are a PS3 owner running your PS3 on an HDTV (High Definition - 720p, 1080i or 1080p) then you can import both European and/or Japanese versions to play on your console regardless of what region your console is from as HDTV signal worldwide follow a single standard known as ATSC.

If you are running your PS3 on an SDTV (Standard Definition - 480i or 480p) then it gets more complicated due to the whole NTSC vs. PAL issue. If your SDTV is Multisystem i.e. able to show both NTSC and PAL signals then you are ok to import the game and play it. There are some instances though where the game still won't run even though you are using a Multiregion TV. However, if your TV only works on one standard i.e. NTSC (for North American fans) then you won't be able to import and play the game as your SDTV won't be able to display the signal coming from your PS3.

My advice for PS3 owners; make sure you are playing your PS3 on an HDTV to avoid all small issues that can arise from regional differences.

UPDATE: You don't have to have an HDTV to play this game unless you are playing it on a console from a different region e.g. PES 2008 (European Import) on a US PS3 in the USA.

So now you ask, how do I get a hold of a European or Japanese version of the game? Simple! We have compiled a list of Importers where you can Preorder/Order the game online for delivery to your doorstep. Most of these deliver worldwide, but all of them deliver to North America.

Traded in FIFA and pre-ordered Pro Evo early this afternoon. Felt good about it too. FIFA was utterly poor in my opinion. I didn't enjoy a single minute of it Im afraid

hi guys, not sure if this is a stupid question or not, but i have a US PS3 and live in the UK. Will i have any compatibilty probs when playing say the PAL version online here in the UK? Im only saying this as i had a JAP version of Motorstom and couldn't play it online in the UK...any help much appreciated!

I'm fairly sure you can play PES online, the only reason you couldn't play MotorStorm online was because the Japanese version didn't include online play.

How much did you get for it? I'm so close to trading my copy in as well.

I also have a US PS3 and live in the UK. I've been playing the PAL version of FIFA 08 just fine online since it's release. I also have a multi-system HDTV* also and that helps out a lot.

*see SnakeDevil post on importing games.

It seems Sebass wont let go the PS2 versions that soon....this could be bad for the current gen version in the future.

hey Nunalho,
how about adding a section to the first post with a list of PES players so that we can organise a tournament or league? Or just friendly matches...
Then maybe the mods will stick this thread.
Is anyone else up for that idea?
