This story came out two days ago had a look through the threads and its seems this article is different than the other G71 posted. What puzzles me is that they are talking about the G71 being on 110nm. I also thought the info on the dual slot cooling was interesting. Could this type of tec being used on the RSX?

You see, G71 is the secret code name for a green answer to red danger. The PCB on which G71 chip resides is almost identical to the one used in GeForce 7800GTX, with the only thing really changing the cooling and number of memory modules, of course.

After the company from Satan Clara learned that R520 is going to use dual slot copper cooling in X850XT Press Edition-style, it gave the green light to the engineers that are trying to make the board to break every speed record set by Nvidia's G70 and ATU's R520 - OC gurus such as Macci and Oppainter excluded, of course.

The "Faster G70", which is how the G71 is being called internally now, targets almost insane clock speeds. We have learned that several boards achieved a clock speed of 800MHz, which just goes to prove that tweaks being done in 110nm G71 core will make R520 tremble, and force ATI to respond with its 32-pipe R580 as soon as possible. However, we have to warn you that we haven't been able to find out in what environment this clockspeed was achieved. But it was achieved using new and improved two-slot cooling, not water or phase-change cooling.

On prototype boards, cooling solution is separated in two halves, with nicely sized 72 or 80mm fan in the middle. Both halves feature large number of aluminium fins, through which two heat pipes lead the heat from the center block (hidden under the fan) which covers the GPU completely. Also, background of the board is identical to the one found on 7800GTX (plastic "heatspreaders" on GDDR-3 memory, plastic stabilizator on to release strain on the PCB).

So, to sum what we know about G71, possibly dubbed the 7800 Ultra:

- 110nm process, modestly revised GPU
- unexpected clockspeed (up till' this story, of course)
- dual-slot aluminium cooling with at least four heatpipes
- ultra-silent, large-fin large-diameter fan
- 512 MB of GDDR-3 memory, provided by Samsung. Capacity of the chips: unknown

RSX is 90nm.... So, the RSX WILL be capable of even more theoretical performance..

Dear Lord.. What is the RSX?? It's going to be like ForeRunner technology or something?

that good, then should make sure it work to full power if it's going to help sony.

Do you think Sony has enough room for the dual cooling? It also talks about pipes taking the heat away from the GPU. I would imagine that would cause a problem with overheating to the other components if this was the case (i.e. they used dual cooling).

Not unless they up the specification... as of right now, it's at 550 MHz.

Wow, so it may very well be the case that RSX will run at higher than 550Mhz. Even heat shouldn't be an issue, because if it can really hit 800Mhz then 600-700Mhz should be doable in its sleep at 90nm. I can hardly believe that they can really clock these babies up this fast!

Is this the new RSX or something, I am confused?

no its a graphic chip for only PC, and NVidia said that the RSX is going to be the most powerful on the market when it come out and this card from my knowledge is coming out soon.i might be wrong on when it comes out.

jeez louise i absolutely hope Sony come out with the final specs of whatever they got now!

i was thinking, maybe Nvidia released the specs of RSX at 550Mhz, because if they announced the GPU at a crazy speed like 800Mhz, than ATI could be crapping their pants in the PC market, and get prepared to outdo this type of performance.

i really hope at E3 they threw that 550Mhz to protect Nvidia for the PC market, because remember Sony didn't disclose what was in the Beta kits of the PS3, until the 7800GTX was released.
this is more hope than anything though.

this is near killing me not knowing where the final specs of the RSX lie. :?

ATI's R520 has already been overclocked past 1ghz.

800mhz shouldnt be too far out of the question.

Yes, but R520 technology is not being used in a console.

Wonder how big the fans are on that beast lol. Anyone think were going to have some type of cooling fan in the back of the PS3 or Xbox 360?

how much cooling is that needing!?!

the team, optimistic that higher speeds could ultimately be achieved with the Radeon X1800 XT, attained the record speeds using a custom-built liquid nitrogen cooling system that cooled the graphics processor to minus-80 degrees Celsius. "We're just warming up," joked Kurri. "But we believe that the Radeon X1800 XT has even more over-clocking headroom, and in the coming weeks we expect to achieve higher clock speeds and even greater performance levels."

lol i'd love for anyone to use that in a console

makes me wonder if this dual slot cooling feaature would be practical use in a games console.

Probably not. You must remember there is a hell of alot more air circulation in a PC tower compared to the PS3 case. This is most likely why we will see the RSx clocked at 550mghz.

whoah.. How do you know about airflow in the PS3 case?

 Compare the sizes of the two. It isnt that hard

The Intel AMD wars proved that Mghz wasn't necessarily the be all and end all of power. Whats really interesting if the RSX is going to be better than these GPU's what exactly have they done to it?

Compare the sizes of the two. It isnt that hard

yes but take into acount we have no idea how well the PS3 will be at bringing Outside air into and then out of the console it is not how big the system is it is how fast you can move that warm air out and new air in . yes the towers are larger but also need a larger fan to make a decent air excange think with the smaller system you can use the Venturi effect to speed the cold air up as it is brought past the hotter parts of the machine and then ehaust it out into the atmospher..
the fact is we and you have no idea how well the PS3 will be at this so it isnt just size that matters it is efficancy at exicuting the task..
faster moving air in a smaller area will be more effective than slow moving air in a larger area as long as the heat sinks have the same surface area to do the heat exchange with the air..

From the pictures ive seen there is only one side with air holes. Will the PS3 use heat pipes? If it does i could believe this theory other wise i think it will be very hard to do this. My main point in what i was saying was just trying to answer this question BTW...

yes i understand that but it just depends on how they implement it i am sure they have people that could figure out how to make it work better than you or I could ever imagine.

I was more impressed with the fact that the G71 is a 110nm architecture after all. This means the RSX really was built from the ground up and the technology should be very interesting. In truth, I was kinda upset when the rumor was going around that G71 was RSX.

Now the RSX is back to square one :) None of us know what it truly is, and that makes me happy.

yeah and you've got to remember that the PS3 is "subject to change"

intel and AMD are CPU maufacturers not GPU.
