Sony Corporation consists of 4 major divisions: Computers, Electronics, Movies and Music, and Games. There is a Financial division to provide financial services to the other divisions.
It is becoming pretty apparent that a lot of people are unaware or ignorant of the sheer size of the Games Division, at only 3% of Sony Corporate. This list below summarizes the Games division studios and the IP (Intellectual Properties) that Sony owns. In contrast, Micro$uck has Bungie, Rare, Lionhead and the now dissolved Digital Anvil plus their PC games studios. That is it. The list below is not even all inclusive and the IP are established franchises. The new IP are not even listed or known yet but basically every SCE studio has at least one or more new IP in progress -- and they are PS3 IP.

Yep - SCE is one of the largest games studios in the world (only topped by EA and Ubisoft I think).

Don't forget EA! Although they make suck games, they are still one of the biggest, if not the number 1 biggest, game studio in the world.
yeah, EA sucks. NFL2K was much better tham Madden
Oh yeah - replace Activision with EA - I messed things up. I think EA and Ubi are the #1 and 2, respectively. I read it a while back, and I can't get a grip and find a link ;o)

so what happen to half of those games, on vacation. they need some serious games for the PS3
The main reason why I said MS isn't in the same league with Sony when it comes to game quantity or quality. The amount MS has now isn't anything to brag about compared to how any Sony will have released by the end of the year.

Sony as a gaming platform provide the best services out of all the competitors. But Everyone knew the first year would be realitevly dry. They need games that warrant the cost of a 600$ piece of hardware. Its much easier for the consumer to swallow, when u have Incredible games ANND BLu-Ray and Media Functionality, i mean sheit, if they jsut have a few more Outstanding games...LBP,MGS4,Warhawk,Heavenly Sword,Assasains Creed,Haze etc.. THe PS3 will sell like hot cakes.

Don't forget that they are mainly(only?) developing for psp/ps2/ps3, unlike Ubi and EA which are PC/DS/Wii/Xbox/360/Ps2/ps3/psp/cellulars. Makes them I think, the biggest supporters of their own platforms.

No need to worry about the link. You were correct and maultiple people know that EA is the number one biggest and Ubisoft is the number two biggest studios respectively. The sad thing is both of those studios suck for the most part whereas Sony's studios make the best quality games.
Nice to see he forget to mention that they have 3800 staff.
7% of which just got booted.

That my friend is why Sony will win. If you can't offer choice, you end up like Nintendo.

That was another thread, no reason to go off topic. But since you want to make something out of it, I pointed out Sony Corporation (all of Sony) has about 150,000 employees world-wide. The Games Division has around 3% of those employees or roughly 4000. The layoffs were about 80 to 100 at the main office in the US, not a game developers studio. There were about 160 laid off at SCEE, still mainly office people, again not game developers.
Since some people are making such a whoopy-dee-doo about how these layoffs mean Sony Studios is going to have a big effect on 1st party games, then it is necessary to tell these people they are full of hot air and don't know what they are talking about.
Those employees are permanent employees of the Sony Studios. Game development these days is not totally done within the studio. A lot of the work these days is contracted out, especially the labor intensive 3D modeling, level building and texture painting, sound effects and musical scores. A lot of this work is being contracted out to Asia now. So, a small amount of permanent employees can be representing several thousand more contract workers do the labor intensive work while the designers, lead programmers and directors supervise from the studios.
Sometimes these people that try to make a big deal about small events only expose how little they know.

Exellent post Bigmerk,
The/se peson/s you refer to have been nitpicking every thing possible.
ie bacwards compatability glitch- now resolved
lack of ram debate/ramblings - debunked
BD Drive speed fud - debunked
upscaling - resolved
Now that many of their fud arguments have been taken away they scratch for new FUD to generate.
The good news is now pretty much all they can fall back on now is the price and lack of AAA titles. The titles are comming so that will leave price. Not bad considering all the FUD thats been floating around the internet since the launch of the ps3.
Things are on the up and up :)

Nice counterpoints. The outsourcing has been taken one step further by MS, which seems to be where you disagree with the MS approach of sourcing game studios to devlop. I mean Bizzare Creations etc are fimly funded by MS's game contracts. Which kind of puts the whole "Sony is huge" thing into perspective. Perhaps this is the route Sony may head down.
What I would like to know from you is, what Sony owned studios have released titles in the past 6 months, and compare them to say Ubisoft and EA.
It would be an interesting comparisim, certainly from a PS3 point of view, considering the size of the company, PS3 titles actually released by these studios seem to be few and far between.
Show us that a huge company is translated into productivty.
And just rember Ubi/Ea publish games on multi platforms.

You do realize you're asking to compare a company making games built from the ground up to take advantage of the ps3 to the 2 companies known for just shelling out crappy ports right. How about asking about quality titles in the last 6 months from all 3 and I think that would put both UBI and EA at 0.
Im seriously baffled why Sony hasnt continued on their elder succesfull series (its like as if they neglected Ape Escape for the PS3). Making new concepts is cool and ****, but that doesnt really get them selling the PS3.

Crappy ports, or no crappy ports, the games count, even if they a multiplatform, simply because they ARE multiplatform. Sure you wouldnt want to go and count Rainbow 6 twice (xbox360 and PS3 verison) but it at least counts for one title. As far aw Im aware Ubisoft have had stellar titles out in the last 6 months (R6, Splinter Cell, GRAW2)
The OP insinuates that Sony are bigger player than MS in the games studio business, which is fine, however backing this up with some sort of anedotal evidence that this big company is actually making some games for the PS3 would be nice dont you think?
It's not like we are talking about a console that is "coming" the PS3 has been around for 7 months and counting now...
Launch titles:
R:FOM
Untold Legends
Genji
Compare that to MS's titiles at the same time...
Kameo
PGR 3
Perfect Dark Zero
3 vs 3, well I dont really see all that power and might coming to bear fruition at this point.
See the difference is MS is a PUBLISHER not a DEVELOPER.
And it only gets worse for Sony, they have precisily 7 confirmed titles coming out this year.
Motostorm (out)
F1 (out)
Lair (July)
Warhawk (Sept)
Heaveny Sword (Sept)
NBA 08 (Sept)
Ratchett and Clank (Sept)
Possibly Folklore, Uncharted.
Why can one of the biggest software developing houses only manage to get out that many titles, why is it Insomniac are the only ones who seem to be able to pull finger enough to actually get 2 games out within a year???
And why the hell would you publish all your titles in September?
Maybe Sony are putting their resources into Home, I dont know.
But all that man power is not translating into games. And wont do untill September.
What else is coming in September???
Why is it that the very first titles (Warhawk, Lair) I ever read about for the PS3 arent even ****ing out yet???
Is the PS3 THAT hard to develop for??
If so then Sony's throngs of employess may well be needed just to get titiles out the door.
Look at MS's offerings until October...
Tenchu Z
Mass Effect
Vampire Rain
Halo 3
Too Human
Lost Odysey
Blue Dragon
About the same amount of titles, so I'll ask again, if Sony are so very much bigger why havent we got more titles coming this way this year?
Time to develop?
Poor strategy from PS2 to switching to PS3?
I know there will be people out there that point out the obvious...
"But these titles take time to develop, you cant epxect all games to be release din the first year."
And thats true, the 360 wasnt exactly flush, but whos fault is that?
Sony knew they had a year start, they knew they had to hit the ground running, why oh why have they tripped up?
Is Home taking all the reources up?
This thread is yet another one of those, LOOK AT THE POTENTIAL threads.
Seriously, Sony can be the biggest game developer in the world but if they cant schedule games to be released untill September (Why Sony? Thats Suicide).
It's not about whos the biggest, it's about who uses the resources they have the most efficently, and that clearly isnt Sony at the moment.
And that may well be why they have restructured, maybe even Sony can see that manpower they have is not translating into a shear volume of games being relesed in a timely manner.
Is it coincidence that the 2 biggest titles form Sony this year will be independant games developers (Factor 5, Ninja Theory) , not inhouse devs (yes I know Ninja Theory are Sony nowdays).

Don't forget EA! Although they make suck games, they are still one of the biggest, if not the number 1 biggest, game studio in the world.
Yes, compared to EA, every other developers are tiny, inlcuding Sony.
EA also own part of Ubi.
To bad EA cant make a decent game though, everything is flawed/

Also i agree with the first two lines in post above my own, Ubi make great games, they have the best games available at this point.
GRAW
GRAW 2
Rainbow Six Vegas
Splinter Cell
They also have to more coming out, which will most probably be hits also.
Point im making is that just because for the PS3 they are/will be ****ty ports, for the 360 they are amazing top selling fun action packed games.
And to me, (Cant believe im saying this) are better then Gears of War, especialy Rainbow Six Vegas, and i know they dont look as good, but to play and get into the game you will have so much more fun.
I cant see any publisher puttin out a better game in that genre apart from the next set of the same games from the same developers, Ubisoft.

Yea people will find anything to pick at.
To me it just sad really to be wasting my time thinking about a company I dislike.
I said to those that aren't patience enough.
"Be patient. You'll know when it's time for you to wake up and move ahead."

.
I agree that GR:AW2 and R6V are very very good games and totally walk all over GeOW.
As I have said many times before, GeOW is fantastic in some aspects, but as a whole game leaves a lot to be desired. And in that way, it was disappointing for me personally.
I wonder if R6V and GR:AW2 will be crap ports?
I will be getting them for definite when I can. However I have played them on the 360 and enjoyed them well. The only issue I had was the stiff and sluggish movement from GR:AW2, although it was an improvement ove GR.
I also noticed on the 360, that when playing co-op and travelling on the helicopter in R6V that the backdrops became extremely undetailed. Whether this is a 360 power limitation or a mistake in the coding, I don't know. But the game is the best out of the lot for great action & co-op fun.
it is supposed to a great online game also, although I haven't had that pleasure.
We can only hope that the ports are decent enough quality to allow us all the fun of the gameplay.
Back to topic
SONY does have an impressive list of games to their name can take credit for their successes.
Mynd however does have a point.
At what point do you compare the lists? They are taking different routes about their consoles and MS does have the upper hand with game library atm.
I can only wonder when SONY is actually going to start catching up?
As the PS3 can be complicated to code for, will this take longer to release games than in the past?
Of course, the PS2 was worse....but it required less data.
SONY have also stated that they wll release games when they are complete to the best of their ability, rather than through out some half done - half assed code ( Or was it SONY that said this?)
So that willl add to delays, especially if they encounter any problems.
Is it just taking too long with everything considered? Or will the end product be worth it in the end? ( I believe so).
I just wish I had SONY's schedule. the anticipation of some games and wondering what they are working at atm is the killer...lol.

Those are just a list of franchises that Sony Studios owns completely and not an indication of the franchise status. Some are active, some aren't. But they could bring back any one of those franchises that aren't active any time. I for one wouldn't mind seeing a Dropship PS3, gameplay reworked and a combination of Space Marines with SOCOM SEALS. Siren was also a very successful survival-horror and it seems possible there will be a Siren PS3. Sony Studios tend to work in quiet until they are ready to reveal what they have been working on. Remember how God of War almost seemed to come out of nowhere? Maybe it drives gamers crazy but that is the way they work.

Impressive list.... look at all the games to choose from...Maybe 4th quarter game sales will post something more than 3%
