Bonuses for good posting

In order to encourage quality posting moderators have the power to award bonus points to members as an incentive. If you read a post and think it was:

- Insightful
- Very well written
- Original
- Highly informative

Then at your discretion you can decide to give the member skill points. As a rough guide, 100-200 is a good level of bonuses. They can be higher in exceptional cases, but rarely above 500. Points can also be awarded for members who continually post well, or those who have drastically improved their posting quality.

Deductions for rule breaking

In converse to the bonuses, moderators also have the power to deduct points from people who are consistently making poor posts. These include:

- Irrelevant & don't contribute to conversation
- Very short
- General rule breaking
- Very poorly written

The key point here is that they are consistent. A one off post by a good member certainly shouldn't warrant a deduction, however a on-going low posting quality should be addressed.

It is vital, however, to contact members by PM BEFORE points are deducted, except in extreme cases.

Also, you must write why points were deducted in the Modify Skill points comments box. Otherwise they won't know for next time!

The aim of these endeavours is NOT to create a system of beaucracy and punishment, it is simpy to improve the quality and experience of all the members of the forums. Use common sense when making your decision!

Thank you.

Umm this might sound Newbie...ish. But hey, i'm a new Mod so what the heck?

But what exactly does the

Omit
and
Set options do to skill points?

Also, If I leave a comment in the message box (in the Modify area) is that just displayed at the bottom of a member's reply or do I have to press EDIT to leave a comment (and to obviously edit the members post)

You don't need to worry about omitting and setting points, but so you know omit means to leave unmentioned.

Hello guys,

Everything I am about to update you with must be kept confidential - not shown to anyone or posted on PS3Forums. If this is breached, I will not feel confident keeping you guys informed with confidential information in future.

:P

Right, so massive progress in the new web development area of things. I have signed a contract for the exremely professional company www.acromediainc.com (http://www.acromediainc.com) to develop the new site. This will include a new - exremely powerful - backend, as well as a new site design. I know we recently just had a redesign, however I feel that we can easily improve on the current one.

Here is what the homepage will look like: http://www.ps3land.com/Homepage_Layout.jpg

Please feel free to suggest any ways in which we can improve things. We're looking to have this launched asap, though this will likely not be until a few days before the 17th of November - a date that should in all of your diaries!

There's going to be a lot of change over the next few months as we run up to the PS3's launch. You guys are doing an amazing job keeping this site fresh with latest news stories, spiced with new videos, screens and previews/editorials. In a few weeks we should look at recruiting a few new faces, and you all will be involved in selecting the candidates who get the job.

Over the next 2-3 months we're going to be maturing from a medium sized fan site, into a professional gaming news, informatoin and media publisher. A powerful backend, new and detailed design, as well as more staff and a strong vision of where we want to go will get us there.

We're coming up to very exciting times and I hope you all are as excited as I am about this next part of the journey.

P.S. JUSTIN NO HYPING!

Thanks for the detailed update Rebon. As always I'm available if you need a hand with testing, or if you need a second/third opinion.

I know I haven't been on much, and for that I apologize, but right now I'm making a transition into my Freshman year of college. So trust me, money will be in short supply and I will be writing articles to get some pocket change ;).

The foundation for the new layout is tight. I can't wait to see the finished product.

Keep up the good work Kieran, I admire the dedication and dreams you have for this site, the forums, and PS3Portal for that matter.

Guys, I need your help....

Could you each please spend 10-15 minutes of your time (or more if you have it) brainstorming ideas for the new site. They can be as crazy as you like, or as small as you like, both work.

They must be implementable (i.e. not "Set up a worldwide PS3Land television channel"), creative/innovative and useful.

There are loads of PS3 sites out there now, and beyond good content and good marketing, how can we make a really different and unique website? Sit down before bed or when you wake up, and, with a pen, think about what would make a really cool website or website feature. You can ask any of your friends or relatives for inspiration if you ilke.

Beyond contributing to the success of the site, there will be lucrative financial reward for any amazing ideas

YES!!!!!! Will do, I will write up a huge list of cool things to add!

I am really excited to help out again Rebon...lol, I remember sitting down with you the first time with this site, so I am sure we can do it again. Looking forward to doing everything.

Here you go guys for your research....a list of all PS3 sites both US and international. This will help with ideas on whats out there and help to come up with stuff that is not seen on other sites.

Great Justin! Yes, it helps looking at current sites, though the best angle is asking the following questions:

* What would the perfect ps3 website have, or do for me?
* What do we currently assume sites don't do, which they could?
* What do offline stuff do that sites, especially PS3 ones, do not?
* What do other sites (not in the gaming industry) do which could be implented here?

With this new company I see they do Graphic Design....are we getting a new logo too???

Rebon

We're going to get a new layout and design. The current one is much better than the previous, and a good interim layout, but not good enough to achieve for the long term goals for the site. And yes, we'll be getting a professional logo.

rebon, does this mean we're moving from PS3-specific news to gaming news, kind of like IGN?

Good luck with the new backend :)

We'll be sticking with the PS3 niche - as thats what we're currently dominating at. The possibility of broadening up is there, but it is not likely in the next year or two.

BIG IDEA!!!!!

PS3Clans area on our website, people can join, create, ect for ps3 clans and they can access it as part of our site and their member profiles. The PS3Clan area will have all sorts of things from:
- Clan news
- Leaderboards
- What games we offer for clan matches
- Clan lists
- Challeneges, clan leaders or high ranking officials can send PM's to other clans for challenges
- Upcoming Events

We would have to hire at least 4-5 new staffers that own PS3's and have internet to help run this HUGE section but it would be worth it. We could kind of run it as Gamebattles.com only we would have PS3 only.

OR

We should buy the domain name :
www.ps3clan.com (http://www.ps3clan.com) or www.ps3clans.net (http://www.ps3clans.net) since they are available and do the same thing only link them to our site and forum

Rebon

We actually looked at that, because it fits very well with the whole social community aspect. The issue is that right now we dont know exactly how Sony will do online - and so we can properly plan this out.

We will be doing this once we know more info (create clans, apply/join then, member lists, rankings, clan forums and pages etc).

KlawHammer

I like that clan idea. If Sony's online plan works out, people will be creating clans left and right. If our site can track those ratings, many people will visit our site to see which clans they might want to join, where they're ranked, etc.

It's a good idea, but it might be really hard to try and track all of that.

It was for our old forum (which got H4xz0rz3d).

That's too bad... I would love to positively reinforce good behavior beyond rep, which any user can contribute.

This would be nice to redo. I think it would work well for a lot of contest we do, such as the SOTW. Maybe even awarding members that get into the Member of the Week spot and also the thread one.

Also the F@H contest needs to be redone.

I think its a good idea but other than giving you guys a wedge of points each to distribute I don't see a way of doing it at the moment. Maybe theirs a Mod we could use?
