Well, I'm a little confused about what your saying, but I'll try...
-To pick a render go to filters>render>etc
-To hide a layer, you check the (eye) next to the layer in the layers interface.
-Dragging a picture into a layer, (depending on where you drag it) does not always allow you to do it. OR it may make a completely new layer for that dragged picture.

Seriously though, you need to learn some basics before trying some tutorials that use lingo you don't know.

Try using the Lasso tool.... highlight the stuff that you want and drag it to the canvas. Takes about 3 seconds.

1.) A render is usually the image you wish to use in the sig. It usually has a transparent background. To pick one, simply go to File > Open and choose the image you wish to use. You can find some at places like planet renders.com, game renders.com, etc. OR you can cut them out yourself, using Blu-Ray's suggestion ( Open an image, find the part you want, select around it with the lasso tool, and drag it to the sig. )

( Filter > Render chooses different effects to use on the sig, such as Lens Flare or Lighting Effects. The way it's described in the tut is referring to the image being used. )

2.) Cruz already described this one: Just click the little eye next to the layer to hide it.

3.) It depends on what format your image is: If it's .gif, it won't copy over, you will instead have to hit "CTRL + A" to select all, then hit "CTRL + C"
to copy the image. Go to your sig, and paste it in with "CTRL + V". ( This is, of course, assuming you are running Windows. )

If it's .png you should be able to just drag it over using the "Move" tool.
