Great idea for a thread!
I'll try to add the info I find when searching.

Really looking forward to this title, it's imho
by far the best fighting franchise and the
title I'm looking forward to most.
Yes! Even more then FFXIII and MGS4

A bit sad that I can't play SC3 on my European PS3 :pale
But hey I still got my PS2.

My hopes for this title:
Online with voice communication and leaderboards!
Making all characters useful and original
That they throw in at least 3 new characters
At least 1 new style of fighting
Support for all arcade sticks
Some character customizationLets hope for a great game!

Soul Calibur 4 will include online play!
http://www.psu.com/node/11820

As online becomes an increasingly important part of gaming, one genre has generally resisted the network-oriented push. Fighting titles were deemed too quick to put online, with developers generally agreeing that lag ruined the fighting experience. Last generation's iterations of Mortal Kombat (http://www.psu.com/node/11820#) were pioneers in the area, yet didn't require such split-second reactions when compared to a title like Virtua Fighter 5. However, beat-'em-up developers finally appear to be jumping on the online bandwagon as the latest EGM recently confirmed that Soul Calibur IV will feature online play when it hits the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2008.

"What's changed this time round is that the next-gen platforms (http://www.psu.com/node/11820#) have network infrastructure already in place," says Soul Calibur IV Director Katsutoshi Sasaki. "We've heard from fans that they really want the game to be online, so we figured that, with the current environment, we really couldn't make SC4 without online play."

Give yourself a pat on the back, as developers really do listen to you (apparently). Also more good news: your customizable characters (the system introduced in SCIII is returning) will be playable online as well. "We definitely want to allow users to fight with their customized characters during online play (http://www.psu.com/node/11820#). But we're unsure whether or not you'll be able to trade characters with friends."

More news on Soul Calibur IV when it's availablePoint #1 on my list, check! Great news.

Yay next gen boobs FTW lol! On a serious note, I can't wait to play as Siegried and Nightmare my 2 favorite characters in the game. Mitsurugi looks like he may be interesting again. I hate what they did to his moves list in SC3.

I definitely agree with that. Heh. Anyways..... the game seems to be shaping up to be a (in a way) true next-gen fighter. I love the graphics and the article itself sounds interesting. I have a good feeling about this game.

On a side note: Glad they showed Taki, she looks good.

It'd be interested to know whether or not Kilik will play like he did in Soulcalibur 2.

I know this haven't anything to do with this subject, but why are those betrayers Namco (I wish that Kazuya were real,so could he have gave them a big lesson man) making Tekken 6 look so rubbish, even if it have been in development more than Soul Calibur IV,but it looks like last gen,and it does also look so bad at this time guys:(

But here's the high-res of those screenshots:

So who does the screenshots & scans look?Heh they're at least better than the Tekken 6 ones. But which did have better graphics in the last gen Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection or Soul Calibur 3 -("Please without fanboyistic trolling")-

PS:*I'm just sarcastic guys, because I think Namco makes the footages of this game console ones,so it's therefor it doesn't look like Tekken 6,that the lastest ones were only 50% beta ones,so it'll look stunning at the console version*

I'm looking forward to this game too.

Not sure who I'll be if I play online. Although Siegfried's my favorite, I never really latched onto playing as him a lot. I really like Tira's new look so maybe I'll start using her more.

I noticed any of you guys didn't post the trailer for the game from E3 2007. I find it odd that a "certain" someone who have an interest in the game didn't post anything about the video.

The new character in the game (in armor) appear to use a lance and a short sword. The gameplay/graphics appear to be much smoother. The launch property seem to be increased since it appear that you can launch your opponent pretty high in the air. Siegfried appear to use some sort of ice-based special attack while Nightmare seem to be able to use fire element but so far, he haven't used it in the trailer.

Self-proclaimed Official Soulcalibur IV Thread here.

Something I got from EGM #218 (August 2007).
The characters confirmed in Soulcalibur IV are:
-Ivy
-Taki
-Tira
-Siegfried
-Mitsurugi
-Yoshimitsu
-Nightmare

Something about the characters:
-Siegfried is featured using Soulcalibur and have an icy-like armor
-Nightmare is more of a demonic living armor with Soul Edge
-Taki's costume design will be familiar
-New characters aren't initially revealed

Something about gameplay:
-Stages may be consisted of multiple areas
-It can lead to fewer ring-outs overall
-Many elements of the existing gameplay will be greatly improved
-There will be changes for the Guard Break mechanic
-There'll be a new gameplay that will let you win that doesn't involve the health gauge
-Tag play won't be in
-The developers will push for online play

Something about the story:
-It will be more about Soul Edge and Soulcalibur, Nightmare and Siegfried, and the conflict between those two.

Keypoints from EGM #218 (August 2007) Soul Calibur IV will run 60 frames per second(this was revealed previously).
The amount of detail in the game will be amazing! “The leather straps on Ivy’s thighs make real-time indentations into her skin as she fights.”
The development team is putting so much detail into the game that they are actually rendering Taki’s nipples under her leotard.
New characters will be kept under wraps and revealed closer towards the release date.
“Guard Impact” is back.
Stage design is still very early in development. Make sure to take note of these screens as the game progresses.
The stages will be far more interactive and play a bigger role in battle. They use Zasalamel’s clock tower stage as an example.
The development team is hoping to reduce the rate of ring out victories by making stages much larger than before.
The game will be based on the Soul Calibur III engine and will be reworked from the ground up for balance reasons.
Patching the game is possible if any issues come up with gameplay, but “we don’t intend to make a game that needs to be patched at a later date.”
The health gauge is going to be changed. There will be a way to beat your opponent that doesn’t involve the health gauge or ring outs.
No tag-team play.
In regards to Soul Calibur on the PSP: “We’re happy to hear that players would like to see Soul Calibur on the PSP, so we’ll keep that in mind.”
The “Create A Soul” mode is getting major improvements, such as being able to change your characters voice and certain customizations that will have an effect on gameplay.
Online custom character trading is a possibility, as well as bringing your custom character to a friend’s house.

This, Tekken 6, and SF4, has me excited but I am concerned about one major thing in SC4: the balance. I remember arguing this and there were some that thought I was the biggest fighting player newb on the planet. News flash! SC3 (PS2) is completely broken and was unworthy of one of the biggest fighting game tournaments in the world, Evolution. How games like MvC2 still goes considering what it is is a different story though XP!!!

I sincerely hope they'll put out a beta test game online or something and let the players really get a feel and give some feedback for this game. I would do this for any game, especially a fighting game where the players can really show what developers are over/under looking. What made SC3 so ridiculous were the amount of bugs in the game, also the infamous G22 bug and throw cancels that any tournament hosting SC3 had to make some rules for this. Bring back the Guard Impact factor in this game too as it's not nearly as punishable as it was before, and a player should be rewarded for doing those precise defense moves. I have high hopes for the future fighting games, but there can be simple steps for these companies to really make these games play-worthy for years to come.

IWAO
10-26-2007, 22:54
To the ones, that is looking at these screenshots, and maybe thinking "Hmm why doesn't Tekken 6 look like that yet?" or "It's the same freaking company,so why can't they handle to make these good 2 games look equally atleast" or "Meh Tekkens graphics have always not been good until Namco first begun their work on the console version", so is it because Namco makes every Tekken game first at the arcades, and then after a year or less,so do they release a game, that surprises everyone, that thought this game will probably sucks, and the graphics is like some cartony ones.

And btw, so will Tekken 6 come after Soul Calibur IV,and not before,so just give Namco a chance, because they're working on finally releasing some 720p @ 60 FPS HD screenshots of Tekken 6 in mid November or mid December 2007, so please don't make me waste some times/minutes on explaining why Soul Calibur IV does look (Maybe because the vid footage does look better, than the screenshots, that I do everytime post) better, because it's console software they're using, so please don't ignore Tekken 6, because it's first in 2008 Tekken 6 will be developed on the console software, and use the Full HD 1080p @ 60 FPS graphics, so please keep the dirty negative comments wait some months before using them guys.

And btw so do I hope the Playstation 3 version will look best, because Namco is familiar with the Sony tools and software, so this must be possible as exclusive made Playstation 3 games blows the other exclusives on the other consoles:)

PS: I'll be posting these screenshots in better quality maybe today,so here's another thing to add,if you want (To the person, that started this thread xD.)

CES 2008: Soulcalibur IV Shown
The Force is strong with some of the must-see new fighters in Namco's anticipated brawler sequel.
by Matt Casamassina

January 9, 2008 - At a Las Vegas-held press event this week, third-party publisher Namco showed off a playable build of the anticipated 3D fighter sequel Soulcalibur IV. Press gathered at club Blush in the illustrious Wynn hotel (a resort that houses its very own Ferrari dealership) for the festivities, which included everything from jumping dance music and a full bar to a presentation of the much-hyped game itself. Naturally, IGN's own editors took a break from CES 2008 coverage to stop in and see the new fighter, whose cast of blade-wielding brawlers now features such stars as -- are you ready? -- Yoda and Darth Vader from a galaxy far, far away. You just pre-ordered, didn't you?

Soulcalibur IV is coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The ballyhooed franchise has remained at the tip-top of its respective genre due to its balanced and quick controls, deep fighting system and celebrated selection of characters -- a roster that has in previous games encapsulated such stars as Todd McFarlane's Spawn and Nintendo's very own Link of Zelda fame.

Namco introduced the game with a sizzle trailer -- what the company's EVP of sales and marketing called a "visual delight" -- which set up the gameplay demonstrations to follow. The short video montage showcased several different characters, including Siegfried and Nightmare, as they battled across a variety of different landscapes, many of them destructible. The footage displayed the fighter's polished visual style complete with stunning character and environment art, crisp high-definition graphics, advanced facial animation systems and more, and everything ran smoothly at 60 frames per second, a staple of the franchise.

Company reps said that Soulcalibur IV has been "completely recreated for both the PS3 and Xbox 360," and introduces several innovations. Obviously, high-definition graphics, but also a "completely new battle system," an expanded customization mode in which gamers can personalize their character and change the way they interact, as well as what they do, but also take these fully-tailored creations online. And finally, an all-new storyline that will reveal some big secrets that will "blow your mind."

The Soulcalibur Galactic Battle serves as the means to introduce both Yoda and Darth Vader into the roster. A separate montage video built up to the appearance of the major characters. "From all over the world they come in search of vengeance, honor, salvation," a voice-over announced during a selection of different clips from the game. "Driven by the desire to wield the soul swords. But the swords may have met their match." At this point in the video, the screen faded to black and we could only hear Darth Vader's trademark breathing. Then, both new fighters were shown for the first time and looking spectacular. Attendees on-hand for the event erupted into applause. At the same time, actors dressed in Stormtrooper outfits busted in through the door, led by Darth Vader himself.

Fans should note that Darth Vader is an exclusive character in the PlayStation 3 build of the game, whereas Yoda will flip into the air and take down enemies exclusively on Xbox 360. (We can only imagine the system-advocate wars which are bound to explode over this news, but we're staying neutral on this one.) After the reveal, the game's director noted: "When we see Yoda jump in our game, we're like 'Oh, that's definitely Yoda. That's definitely him.' And we we see Vader using the Force, we're like 'Oh, look at Vader. He's badass.'"

Unfortunately, Vader and Yoda weren't playable at the show. In the two stages of the game we saw during the demo, only three characters got that honor: Cassandra, Mitsurugi and Taki. We should also add that we walked the entire show floor tonight in search of a PS3 running SoulCalibur IV, but there were none to be found. For now at least, it looks like the game is only being shown on 360.

Soulcalibur IV is coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this summer. Namco says that with this game "two beloved properties" have come together for "one beloved game," clearly referring to the addition of Star Wars fighters. We have to admit, while they may seem incredibly out of place in this universe, the Star Wars fanboys in us are delighted to see Vader and Yoda in this fighter.

IGN is off to play the game now so look out for more detailed impressions in the near future.

Maxi looks like, well Maxi.

The new girl looks cool. Her sword kinda looks like she would fight like Xianghua.

Her stance however reminds me of that cheap ass Rapheal. Looks like a fencing character.

Every character is tied into Soul Calibur / Edge to a certain degree, each have their reason for wanting it or destroying, whether it be revenge, damnation or perseverance

They all have their own storyline, pretty detailed for a fighting game

SC Yoshimitsu and Tekken Yoshimitsu are entirely two different beings in style and gameplay.

Tekken Yoshimitsu fits the sci fi element of Tekken as he is basically an alien or something.

Whereas SC Yoshimitsu could be considered an Ogre for justice or what not, to fit with the medieval myths and legends theme.

Tekken Yoshimitsu would fit in SC as well as Darth Vader does. i.e. Not at all. :P

It was brought up that the game will have 32 character slots. There are 24 known familiar characters already. Namco said there will be 3 new characters (initially?) among with Darth Vader/Yoda and bonus characters. Excluding the bonus characters, that's 28 character slots taken up. All bonus characters could take up only one character slot like in the previous game. There could be just one character slot for your own custom characters, and another for random custom character. The last character slot can be used for randomly selecting a regular character.

There usually is a character with random fighting style that change each round. According to what I said above, that character could be one of the three new characters. It could be the new guy in the latest Transcendance Trailer (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/34522.html). The problem is that there's no room for Li Long or Hwang (bonus characters?). It's odd that either of those characters weren't revealed before the new guy in the trailer. I guess there won't be any familiar boss character (Inferno, Abyss or Night Terror) playable nor will either Edge Master or Charade be playable. That's assuming my theory on how the 32 character slots will be used is true.

What are your thoughts?

Vulgotha

Yah, the sword makes him seem really, really out of place. Not that he's a bad character, it's just that a sword-wielding alien android thing has no place in a martial arts tournament. One swing of his sword and opponent would be bleeding all over the arena.

You watch too many moives.
The reverse short sword fighting stance was never a ninja stance.
It was popular to use that stance in ninja moives,
because of it's speed and highly defensive style.
However it's actually from a sword stance in south west of china.

Something I got from the videos:
First battle.
Hilde's moves
BT A? 0:47
3B,B? 0:55. First hit launch. Second hit hit the opponent back into the ground. First hit may not hit grounded opponent (can't be sure) but second hit does.
2_8K? 0:58. A sweeping low kick.
Hilde lost her middle armor piece around 0:58 in the video.

Third battle.
66A? 0:22. High horizontal attack.
B,B,B? 0:24. 3-hits combo that may hit high, hit mid, then hit high.
66B? 0:32. Long-ranged attack that hit mid and have knockdown attribute.
6A? 0:34. Horizontal attack that hit high.
BT B. 0:37. Hit mid.
Unknown. 0:49. Jump into air and attack. Had her back turned for a moment.
6B? 0:57. Hit mid.

In Hilde's command layout, A mostly likely correspond to her sword and B mostly likely correspond to her spear.

Honestly I think it's to end the storyline, if I remember correctly she wanted revenge against Mitsurugi for something but I forgot

Heap of new Soul Calibur IV info in this month’s Famitsu
June 25th, 2008 @ 16:10

The new Famitsu has hit the Japanese streets and those busy bi-lingual internet beavers have translated a section containing loads of new Soul Calibur IV information.

The info is:
Custom characters: Complete freedom for use of parts, color change, and cloth combinations.
Custom characters: Body build and muscle are also adjustable, there’s a 100 levels of modification.
Custom characters: You can change fighting styles and abilities.
Custom characters: 50 character slots.
Custom characters: Use parts obtained and equipment bought; you can build ninja looking characters.
Custom characters: You can edit 20 parts of the character, you can also change voice depths, also equip parts on existing characters.
Custom characters: Adjusting both structure and muscle build makes appearance change more visible.
Custom characters: Appearance and voice can be modified at will.
Single-player story mode: There will be character swapping.
Single-player story mode: Character change can be used to perform combos, but it depletes a meter on screen in the lower left/right side.
Single-player story mode: Teammates may suddenly join and leave at the end of the battle.
Soulless Tower mode: A Single-player mode, the goal is to reach the top.
Soulless Tower mode: Each level has treasure chests filled with goodies.
Soulless Tower mode: Opponents have the ability to swap out while fighting players.
Soulless Tower mode: You can choose multiple CAS or existing characters, CAS may be the key to victory.

Soul Calibur IV will be released on August 1 for 360 and PS3.

According to it, Install Game Data is 6700MB and the Game Data is 2048MB. It support NTSC 480p and 720p, and Dolby 5.1 Surround audio. However, it got debunked by Namco Bandai. (See article below)

Namco Bandai Says Soulcalibur IV Install Size "Significantly Overblown"

Namco Bandai's Soulcalibur IV may be known for massive volumes in some aspects of its design, but a rumored 6.5GB hard drive installation for the PlayStation 3 version is not the sort of bloat that sits well with gamers. Add to that an alleged 2GB save file and PS3 owners with a measly 20GB would have had to do some serious housecleaning in between grumbling sessions. The rumors of its disk space requirements have been greatly exaggerated, says the publisher.

"Those numbers are not accurate and are significantly overblown," a Namco Bandai rep told Kotaku. "The actual amount of space for the Soulcalibur IV install and save data file are inline with other games requiring this feature."

Reps did not respond to requests for more accurate (read: exact) installation sizes, nor did they comment on the hard drive requirements for the Xbox 360 version. We have an open request with Namco Bandai and Sony Computer Entertainment America to find out more.

The Next Step
Mr. Hoshino
Lead Programmer
Namco Bandai Games

The wait is over! I am Hoshino-san, a lead programmer within the Project Soul team! In today’s blog, I would like to touch on some of the challenges we faced during the development process.

With Soulcalibur II, we did multi-platform development. But this time around we had some challenges in developing Soulcalibur IV. Still, our desire of wanting as many users to play and enjoy the game kept us moving forward. We really wanted to make this game available for all next-gen console owners.

Unlike Soulcalibur II, Soulcalibur IV is a completely new title and on top of that we didn’t fully know the capabilities of the next-gen systems. Our goal was for there to be no difference in quality between the X360 and the PS3 and at the same time we wanted to maximize each platform’s potential. Under such circumstances, our rendering team’s efforts at the early stage of the development were extraordinary. Also, keeping up with the SDK and firmware updates for both systems wasn’t easy.

Regarding online play, it was something our team has never done before and it was quite a challenge. Ultimately, the outcome is pretty satisfying and high-quality because a lot of networking experts throughout the company helped us out.

When the idea of “equipment destruction” came from our design team, we honestly got a little anxious as this too would be quite a challenge. With the combination of our effect team’s great performance and adoption of a game engine, the end results were much better than we expected.

All of the new and exciting elements to the Soul series, found in Soulcalibur IV, are the results of our programmers’ enthusiasm. We are confident that players will like them.

Personally, whenever I had a difficult time and was faced with a technical challenge, I would picture players enjoying our game. I didn’t want to make any compromises, I didn’t want to make a game that didn’t satisfy me when I imagine myself playing it, either. These are the kinds of thoughts that motivated me to pursue perfection.

The gameplay, controls, visual and audio of Soulcalibur IV on both consoles have the same quality yet make the most use of their respective system capabilities! Please enjoy both versions of the game and experience the most beautiful game in the world for yourselves!http://blogs.ign.com/NB_SoulCalibur/2008/07/11/95726/

Answered By Hideo Yoshie, Character Designer
We aimed to make a character that is the “king” of an ultra ancient civilization and a character that obviously proves the setting of being the strongest character ever in SC series.
So, he’s wearing a costume from the ancient kingdom that isn’t recorded in history, and it was really difficult and troublesome to make the design of his costume as so just by looking at it.
The final motif of the amour ended up being the “bird,” but there were many other ideas like the lion, cobra, dinosaur and more.
I believe the design combined dynamism and splendor, and is very cool.

His right hand glows red and his left hand glows blue because he holds the Soul Edge in his right and the Soul Calibur in his left.
Also he has 10 kinds of weapons built in his body and shows a variety of fights never seen before, including flying in the air and sitting in the throne.
I want people to have fun by his buzzard actions.
There was an idea for an additional option which he causes an off-site brawl with a pipe chair instead of the throne, but we were not able to put the idea in the game this time.
By the way, the Algol that shows up in the opening demo is Algol when he was still a human.. That’s why his hair has a different color from within the game. There are some more detailed differences, so please go on and find more differences on him for fun through the game.

She's only 32 she's not that old for God sake, quite young actually.

I meant old as in targeted as an object for her boobs. They just keep getting bigger. Its really getting old. Taki also is aimed as an object and they should stop with that. Just make a normal fighting game.

Normal you say? So get Tekken 6, because I don't think Namco will take this out of the Soul Calibur series as long as there's many people, that wants it. So yes I think the Tekken team is better at making a serious one mate ;)

The official release date for SC4 is July 29, 2008 in NA region, July 31, 2008 in JP, AUS and EUR regions, and August 1, 2008 in UK region. It is already sold in some of the stores in America though.

I kept looking at the sales ranking for PS3 and Xbox 360 version of Soul Calibur IV at Amazon.com and Amazon.ca. PS3 version commonly have higher sales ranking than Xbox 360. I guess that mean PS3 version is more popular.
