This is a general question directed at MS as a whole. What is your OP on windows vista? I know this might be the 360 page but I want to get some results... Just a couple questions I have, feel free to add to this if I missed anything that warrants attention!
1 Stability? System lock ups, ect.
2 Compatablilty Issues?
3 Privacy/Security Improvements?
4 Overall Apperance?

I feel that XP is a perfect OS. Windows Vista may have come too soon, or been imposed on the public too soon. Vista is somewhat resource hungry and offers very little incentive to "upgrade." Vista also has 30 versions of itself to confuse the crap out of consumers. Granted, XP had 2 at the start, but not 6.
Gaming on Vista seems to be slower then if you played those game on XP. Take Halo 2 for instance, plaaying it on XP gives you 30-40% better performance.
But that's just my two cents. People said the same thing when MS announced XP and they still had 98.'
It's not like we have a choice in the matter, MS is God in the OS market, we'll all use Vista eventually.
I don't see Vista offering anything to me that XP already doesnt offer.

XP > Vista.
But around XP's release it was like this:
Windows 98 > XP
Like Perfect Sin said, its just too soon for Vista. It eats resources like a fat American in McDonalds and its full of craptastic bugs. In a year or two i will update to it but you have to think. XP still isn't perfect and thats how many years down the line? Vista will come into its own very soon i believe.
It is pretty - thumbnailing files is actually great and the new searchbar is a god send.
System stability is fine, graphical drivers are fine and system performance gaming wise is fine. Vista is quirky [read: crap] for security and stuff though it asks you all the time if you are sure you want to do something or it will even lock you out and not let you delete stuff. It autoscans stuff from msn and decides whether or not you are allowed to open it - even under admin role.
That can all be dealt with though by tinkering under the bonnet and whilst the OS is far from perfect buying XP over Vista as of right now is pretty short sighted imo.
Some of my friends have had a nightmare with it though so I will post my specs.
C2D 1.86 OC --> 2.5gighz
Corsair ddr 800 ram 2 gigs off running at 1066
asus P5B delux mobo
Ati x1950 pro
I know the 8800 cards and a couple of mobos had a bitch of a time with Vista but not me, and I recommend it if you are doing a new build or somethign - I wouldnt pay to upgrade from Xp though.

1 Stability? System lock ups, ect.
2 Compatablilty Issues?
3 Privacy/Security Improvements?
4 Overall Apperance?
1. Stability has been decent at best. I have had a few blue screens but thats basically from overclocking my hardware.
2. Compatability issues have been aggrivating with certain software, but some of this can be suppressed by using compatability mode.
3. Privacy/Security I think it has improved a bit because of vista warning screens but I read online that Microsoft has imbedded spyware to track users of Vista, activity so thats not much privacy at all.
4. Appearance is the biggest upside to having Vista, other than that Vista has a lot of work to ahead to be a solid as XP.
XP > Vista.
But around XP's release it was like this:
Windows 98 > XP
I have Vista, your point illustrates exactly what a new operating system often goes through.
Although, there mightn ot be enough incentive to upgrade to Vista, but Vista is not a step down from XP, like people here make it out to be. If you consider Vista resource hungry, your computer just isn't apt for it yet. Things will pick up, as they always do and Vista will of course (with good reason) be the main OS, as XP is now.

I appreciate your points guys but MS has been developing Vista for more than 5 years and it's not fare to give them any kind of excuses. They could've fixed all the problems in those 5 years instead of making us experiment rats. by the end of the day, MS is always like that they don't care about the customers they care about money. So how give a **** all of us gonna end up using Vista.
1 Stability? System lock ups, ect.
More stable than XP for me. Note - I bought a new computer with Vista, rather than try to upgrade XP. I believe upgrading the OS is bad news (not just to Vista, but any upgrade). I recommend a fresh install.
Early Nvidia drivers gave stability issues; this is an Nvidia problem, not a Vista problem. Nvidia drivers have been stable since April. The NVidia installer is still garbage (makes you reboot 3 times, when Vista should not need to reboot at all for video driver installations!).
2 Compatablilty Issues?
Less compatibility issues than XP had. A lot of very old children's games work just fine for example. Only a few programs have been blocked from installing by Vista - usually low-level stuff like network services. Vista is very, very good at knowing if an older program will pose problems. It also has an outstanding built-in problem report and resolution system.
3 Privacy/Security Improvements?
Definitely improved. You can disable the security pop-ups if you want - but isn't that exactly what we complained about in XP (the lack of security)? So I leave the security on. The built-in antivirus has already done well for me, and the Vista firewall is less intrusive than in XP SP2.
4 Overall Apperance?
No contest, the Vista interface is prettier and (with a 3d card) much faster overall than XP. Bootup time is about the same. Power management / sleep mode is much improved from XP. Installing drivers is painless compared to XP. I'm mostly happy with the improvements to the user experience.

When we got our new computer it came with vista home edition, I like it. It's similar enough to XP to stay user friendly but has enough improvements to make it better. I don't play games on PC so the resource thing hasn't come into play for me, only thing that bothers me is some of the software compatibility. I can't use my old version of photoshop on it and several other programs either won't work at all, or work kinda halfass.
Hmm I'm getting a Vista computer, when my currently computer dies & when I've uploaded all my 2.2GB data on my USB Memory Stick, that'll be this year hopefully as I hope this "Windows Vista Ultamate" will have improved more, but yeah it'll be a good choice for me as my Computer & HDD sucks guys:)
1. I have been on Vista Ultimate for a little over 2 months not and have yet to crash. If you have a dell laptop such as myself, you will notice a BIG improvement with the battery compared to Windows...

Is this really true??? Now i'm getting scared. I have bunch of pirated softwares.
Well overall i think vista is great, not as good as xp but it will be eventually. I mean take this for an example, I couldn't turn set my comp on highest resolution because ATI hasn't fixed the issue yet. For like a week after i bought it, my res was on second to highest res. Now that ATI has just released a new driver, i could set it on highest again.
What i mean is it's just the beginning, so yes you will probably like XP better. But sooner or later, as more compatibility issues solved and more games that require Dx 10 are released, you will have to turn to Vista. As of right now, don't buy Vista just yet, but if you happen to buy a new comp at this time, then don't uninstall Vista. It's not that bad. It probably slows your games down a little because it takes more power to run the OS that's all.
Windows Vista's vista sucks!
Windows Vista is completely rushed and a rip-off. I have been using the Operating System since the Beta's and the full version isn't an improvement. The only reason why I have Windows Vista installed is because I have a beastly computer that is going to be playing Crysis soon.
XP is better. It has less problems, people are familiar with it and its still the standard.
Why buy Vista when Windows 7 - which Microsoft is going to change the face of Windows as a whole are rebuild it from scratch - is coming out in Q4 2009? You can't wait 2 years to get the biggest upgrade? But if you must have Vista and you aren't gaming, get a Mac. You can run Boot Camp, VMWare or Parrellels, which lets you run Windows programs on Mac OS X Tiger/Leopard.
It's sad Windows Vista just came out and Mac OS X Tiger is still up-to-par with Windows Vista... shows how much Microsoft cares:-?

You definitly dont want vista then
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Rights_Management
It will delete programs from your computer that it doesnt see fit and you cant stop it.
You just cannot compare the move from 98 to xp, to the move from xp to vista.
Games run better on xp because DRM on vista is always running.
Xp will give you higher FPS, and linux will do you even more justice, if you can run your game on linux and are willing to learn how.
I looked through all the features Vista has to offer. Most if not all can be done with XP.
Anyone who is serious about there computer and privacy will never get Vista. Anyone who does get vista is making it harder for everyone else to do what they want with there pcs.

Using XP myself, my mate built a new PC and from knocking about with it myself I found;
Stability seems to be very good. Stability usually goes down when you install alot of crap and get file cluttered everywhere but for the most part his seems very stable, very efficient. Nothing really stood out to me as being a problem. I had a bad sector in my RAM and it used to give me a BSOD but XP runs fine on my PC and from knocking about on his it seems just as happy to do it's thing with out errors.
Compatibility has been my mates biggest issue and it's something I expected. He has an ATi video card which never really has the best drivers but it seems happy enough. He was getting some appalling frame rates in some games that should have been running better. More recent patches to the games especially dual core support and Vista compatiblity has improved game performance measurably. Some programs aren't compatible or at least weren't when he first got his new rig but it's getting better and games are being coded with Vista in mind now.
Privacy and security is pretty full on, you can't pick your arse without it asking for permission. Seemed a little too frequent for my own tastes but not being my PC I didn't exactly tell it to stop annoying me, I left it for him to play with in that regard. He hasn't had any problems connecting to my network or anything and it seems to be running ok without cutting his access off at the knees.
Looks hella pretty.

Thanks everyone for your input!!!! I got to play with vista a little today and must say, wireless connectivity is garbage for a laptop!!! My sis just got a vista laptop and connecting to a wireless router is just awful. XP is alot better in that aspect in MHO. I stop playing with it after 15 mins of trying to connect to my router. I saw the dmr post and came to a conclusion. Linux is were I am headed. Ubuntu offers better visuals then vista, without telling me what I can and can not copy, burn, run, or surf. Also knowing that vista can rat me out, well we all know what happens to narc's. Well here is a link to a ubuntu linux vid on utube, http://youtube.com/watch?v=gpOz8duTh-4. I know now the vista is for aunt peggy, not a person like myself who does not wish to be told what I can and can not do with my puter, and Vista is def never gonna get a chance to control my actions. Really its basically the DRM that pushed me away, but it was more like a kick to the head then something I could work around. Thanks again for the input everyone!!!
When you first run it after installing, Vista asks you whether you want it to periodically contact MS with the "rat you out" info. It's not something that happens against your will.

I'm happy with Windows XP, I have no reason to upgrade.

Not from what I have been hearing. Vista will erase programs and files without you having any control over it what so ever!!! There are even youtube vids showing it in action!
Once Nvidia brought out some decent drivers for its video cards, I have nothing but love for vista. Been using it since it came out and I am a BIG PC gamer.

If your not playing games Vista is prob the best operating system out. (as long as you have vista drivers for everything) I have been testing vista since Beta and Business edition since November. And am currently deploying 385 vista system where I work, and all I can say is WOW its STABLE AS HELL. Standard apps run tons faster due to Application caching etc. And the overall networked (domain users) expirence is tons better including but not limited to:
Offline files Cache
Sync of network storage
Print Services
And desktop lockdown (GPOs to lock-down/customize individaul user expirence)
Plus the new imaging techniques you can use (BDD2007, WDS, etc)
In a managed environment Vista is GREAT - Because it is completly hardware independent! The Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) in vista is not directly connected to the kernal so when you image a vista machine it is actually a "custom" install everytime and drivers are installed from a "driver store" This makes the system completly portable to different hardware without a worry.
For instance I can take my laptop im on now, and sysprep the drive and place it in my desktop and have it bootup - it will re-install the needed device drivers and everything works great (no direct connection to the HAL)!
Not linking the kernal directly to the HAL is also a HUGE plus for stability - therefore device drivers are alot less likely to cause serious issues with the system stability - This of it like Linux and its use of kernal modules - this makes the system rock solid. I have yet to have a lock-up in all my testing, the worst thing i have had happen is an app quit.
Overall I would say it is the best system MS has created! NOW if you play games Stick with XP :)
