View Full Version : Revolution graphics barely better than GameCube’s

The January 2006 issue of EGM features some more ammunition in the ongoing console flame war with reports that early Nintendo Revolution graphics are “barely better than those on GameCube.”
From the Rumor Mill [all bolded text is Q’s]: “Visually impaired
The Q hates being the bearer of bad news, but it comes with the territory (at least that’s what the rumormonger handbook says). During a recent powwow with a few well-known gamemakers, some discussed their hands-on time with early Revolution development kits. OK, here it goes: According to those fellas, the graphics that Nintendo’s next-gen system can produce are barely better than those on GameCube. Hey, sounds a lot like Xbox-Xbox 360.”
That last line is a good reminder that we saw similar visual issues with 360 games early in development as well, and quite a few of those titles turned out decently in the end (for launch titles). Of course, if you’re working with graphics hardware only 2-3 times more powerful than the GameCube’s, don’t expect a miracle in the graphics capabilities, especially with alpha or beta SDKs. The Revolution may get hyped to kingdom come, but there’s a reason why screenshots aren’t being released to the public until next year. Temper your launch expectations, and we should all rest a little easier… till E3 rolls around, that is.

Just rumor right now. Even if this is true,Revolution's selling point is going to be gameplay, not graphical capabilities.

O_o they dont know that.... If it didn't have much more power than the GameCube, they wouldn't be designing Hollywood and Broadway.
This looks like just another false rumor being spread by someone against Rev, then picked up the media... -_-
In all of Nintendo's history, their consoles (not including handhelds) have been on par with the competition's graphics... And Nintendo, although they are putting a larger emphysis on gameplay now, still knows that and they know its important to keep they're graphics looking good.
When it comes down to this article... who am I going to beleive, the Japanese Nintendo reps that said it will be competitive? or some odd little Joystick article, referencing an EGM magazine...
BTW, I HAVE that issue, I'll look through it later, but I highly dislike this magazine... even if it was a free issue... They heavilly support more hardcore gaming, and they dont seem to give a **** about any Nintendo stuff and just talk about its problems... They have an article about Animal Crossing DS, and they try to make look like they liked it, giving it a 7, but the whole article talks about why they didnt like it.(which seems to be that this isn't their kind of game)-_- So I wont be trusting this magazine! =P
Nintendo will be 'on par' with 360 and PS3 as far as graphics go, thats not a problem, and its not hard for Nintendo to do... What really is gonna matter, is the gameplay and that new controller! ^_~
Well, considering we havent even seen engine footage of a Revolution game yet, Im sure tweaks are being made to the system still. Nintendo is probably the most responsible company when it comes to these console launches. They'll show what they have when the time is right.

I wouldn't go that far. But it's still possible. I'm really concerned, because the last Nintendo console I can truely enjoy is the SNES. That says a lot, since i'm still a kid deep down inside.
Gameplay matters to me. But it shouldn't take a whole new controller idea to change this. To me, that's just a poor excuse to be 'different', and I can't find myself using that controller no matter what they use it for.
What also concerns me is that they are going to make a traditional controller to put this 'remote' into, based on the Gamecube controller (I believe). I truely dislike that controller, aswell. :?
I will own all next gen consoles, but I don't see myself being too happy with the controller.

I just hope that Nintendo some how kick up a shit storm and really put word out to all gamers that this is the console to buy. I don't want Nintendo following the same footsteps Sega did. When Sega finally decided to quit the console business I was gutted. I'd hate to see another legendary gaming company going down the pan.
well nintendo said this a while back that the revolution
will have the weakest grapchis out of next gen.
nintendo is done they should just make games
for sony and ms and stick with hand helds.
Well, I guess I can throw in my two cents. Nintendo execs recently went on record and stated that they may not even release the specs of the Revolution. Honestly, I don't understand why they would go to that extreme unless the graphical capabilities were not something special. Then still, Miyamoto said when you see the graphics you will say "wow," so hopefully that's the case.

Not going to happen, it wouldn't be profitable for them. They actually make pretty large profits, and they themselves have stated that the day they drop out of the console industry is the day they drop out of video games all together. As for the rumor, the "2-3 times more powerfull" statement is false, Nintendo have stated that in the past. They would be insane to release a console that underpowered compared to the competitors.

I don't think the graphics on the Revolution will be bad. This is just a rumour. Like the whole thing about the Playstation 3, were people said that you can't let people borrow games, or the games will be $70-80 dollars. These are just crazy rumours, and the chances of this actually happening are very small.

Wasn't the whole point of the revolution to have almost all it's past games BC? I mean for a console specualted at $100- 150 that's pretty good for a graphics card barley better than the one it has now. And the one it has now isn't all that bad, just look how gorgeous Zelda: TP looks.
Ok So Can someone show me the real improvement of this console and how it is next gen material :?

The controller and the way that you can play games. Remember, graphics aren't the only thing to equal next gen.
I think that gameplay is very important but lets face it if they want to get alot of consoles sold they need graphics as good as xbox and ps3, most people still go after that i think.

Looks to me that Nintendo is not trying to make the best looking games here. I know gameplay is what matters to nintendo the most but only there Handhald is makeing them the most money. Nintendo needs to have games that make everone happy and make them more often. I mean you get only one good Zelda game once a gen here.

Why is everyone putting so much emphasis on graphics? I know a lot of you play emulators, do you play them for the graphics or because the games were good. I don't care if the games look the same as they did on the gamecube. The thing is, this new controller is going to change the way we play video games, the way we view video games, and the way developers design video games. The market was getting stale, something like this is exactly what is needed to spice it up a bit.

Because everyone always cares more about looks than heart... =P
Honestly though... Specs can't tell us anything about what the graphics will look like... hasn't anyone learned that yet?
Besides... if Nintendo is truely using some interesting new form of graphics mapping... like say Displacement mapping, or nurbs, or Cube mapping... or WHATEVER... XD then I'd say even with lower specs there will be no difference between 360 ps3 and Rev.
Look at the gamecube... less specs than PS2, yet it looks better! =P

See, with each new generation, there has been a new innovation, except with this generation
with the NES, Nintendo brought out the idea of using 2 hands on the controller.
With the Nintendo 64 and PS1, We had a completey 3 dimensional world, which added so many different types of games other then Puzzle and platform. But what happened this generation? Nothing. Just better graphics and better hardware. Yeah, there was online, but that's just multiplayer with no one in the room, and besides, PC has had Online for a while now, so it wasn't all that great. The Revolution will innovate, and make gaming different. And if they have to cut some corners on graphics to achieve this, then I don't really care.
