View Full Version : What's so great about Halo?

I'm not trying to create a fuss but I'm just trying to understand the big fuss about Halo.

I've played the original on the xbox and it didnt impress me too much. It had great graphics but really, isn't it just another sci fi fps?

What was so engaging about it that MS is building basically their console brand around this game series?

for me and 3 friends it was all about the mindless fun and senseless violence of multiplayer

and that was it

single player was absolutely boring. people on this forum say to read the books but in my view I feel if a game is as great as people champion it to be it needs no help in explaining it's storyline (Stuff like that is saved for curiosity and sheer boredom on wikipedia)

To put it simply: Halo was the most awesome/painful case of blue balls I ever experienced

I don't expect much from Halo 3 either with it's bloom effects in full speed

Co-op, simple as that. If you played it alone it isn't as fun, get a friend and play it another run through with him.

i guess it introduced online game play on a console back in the day but now it's just common place?

the colors are very nice and the storyline is quite compelling mixed with the fact that the original xbox had nothing you could play on it except for halo (kotor jade empire)...

I could ask you the same about Viva pinata, the metal gear franchise, Mario , the DS, Halo online........All things i don't like with a passion ,but that does not make them bad, only that they don't appeal to me, same with you and halo, if actually playing the game did nothing for you then take that as a sign that you just don't like it, and nobody on any online forum is going to change that if actually playing the game did nothing for you.

I've played through both Halo & Halo 2 numerous times, Halo 2 twice in first 24 hours after laying my hands on it!
I really can't pinpoint what's so great about them. The wholeness is the great thing: balanced set of decent controls, decent story & decent graphics. Throw in the best co-op I've ever played and it's nailed.

Actually this thread is stupid, same as I'd run around asking "what's so good about candy" which majjority eats.

The multiplayer and the vehicles in it is what made me play and have so much fun with Halo. I think what made it so special back then was that there wasn't any FPS game on console with such a good multplayer mode.

Other than that there wasn't anything special IMO, the singleplayer was ok and the storyline sucked.
And I got tired of shooting pokémons in the end.

Halo and Timesplitters were the first FPS games to really suit the controller on a console and not feel like a mouse and keyboard were required.

MP is also really fun on Halo, lots of replayability, especially with a large group of mates

well goldeneye on n64 was pretty good on the console

but i guess i understand why its so big now on the xbox

For me the thing that sets it apart is the music. IMO music is very important for a game to be AAA. Every game i've ever really enjoyed has had great music e.g zelda series, FF7, Bof2, SSBM.

When i loaded halo for the first time and the music game on it blew me away. From start to finish i think it was pretty close to perfect.

Other than that i think the story is quite good and it is simple to pick up and play. The controls are really easy to use especially with the vehicles. Plus SP co-op is awesome:D

Halo's like one of those tv shows that isnt exactly brilliant, but you're familiar with it and know all the characters.
So you wanna know what happens in the next episode.

The multiplayer thats it, the story mode wasnt very impressive it was the online game play that created all the hype.

Can these trap threads just be locked upon initial posting.

All it ever ends up being is fanboys dogmatically saying Halo sucks or is awesome. Even though the success of Halo should speak for itself, a lot of people are egotistical and think they know better.

I think Halo 1 was a huge step in FPS on consoles. Its control was great, graphic were amazing for the time, story line was good.

It was everything a FPS should be, and all on a console. Then Halo 2 came, improved on anything minus the storyline (IMO)...and added online multiplayer.

Nothing really just that it has a huge fanbase that will like whatever is put out to them...

I can just imagine what the answer to this would be on a 360 forum:

"Halo is great because it's great. If you're too stupid to see it's greatness go die or something, because hating Halo is unamerican and lets the terrorists win. Enjoy your ban."

Personally, I don't think there's really anything special about it. It came out at the right time and did everything well. Sometimes that's enough.

For the most part.

halo 1 was fun...

halo 2 boring...I'm sorry multiplayer doesn't justify a purchase in my book if your campaign sucks.

Are you serious? Halo is probably the most well rounded FPS ever made. The story is compelling, deep, and epic, and its so large that there are sites DEDICATED to theories of the story's ending and just the storyline and plot in general!

The gameplay is almost perfect. Never before has dual weilding been so efficient and easy. Online is a complete fragfest slaughterhouse, complete with mindless violence and n00b combos. And with new playlists every now and then, it never dies.

Sure, theres the team killer ******* or 12 year old racist every now and then, but just mute him.

The graphics, for Halo 1 and Halo 2, were impressive for the hardware they were running on. Halo 3, on the other hand, can be much better than what we saw in the beta, and Im sure it will look better.

I used to be sceptical about Halo as well, but then I played it, now Im hooked and I have Halo 3 Leg. pre ordered.

IMO Halo 1 I didint like, Halo 2 was really good, but it was the Halo 3 beta that really made me a believer.

I didn’t have the original Xbox and I only played Halo and Halo2 when I got my 360 well over a year ago (there wasn’t much else to play on the 360 at the time).
I completed the single player missions (both games) to see what the fuss was about and also to catch-up on the story. OK these games seemed quite dated (even a year ago) but we need to compare these games to what was out when the games were originally released. So I’ll try to answer the question based on the fact that I played Halo and Halo 2 years after many others and I’ve only played them in single player mode.

What was good about Halo/Halo2 (Single Player):
Vehicles: Most other first person shooters didn’t (and still don’t) allow you to jump into a vehicle drive around mowing down the enemy or jump on the back of a vehicle take to enemy down with a big machine gun while you are being driven around. Having said that I was never quite convinced about the control schemes for the vehicles, it only seemed right for the tanks and another little thing I didn’t like was why couldn’t the vehicles carry any of your extra weapons or ammo? You could look at the vehicles see loads of space on the back, look at the pile of weapons/ammo next to the vehicle and have to leave them there to go into battle because you couldn’t load them unto the vehicle, man that just seemed wrong.

Aircraft: Most other first person shooters didn’t (and still don’t) allow you to jump into an aircraft take off (flying the aircraft yourself) and take down enemies on the ground or get involved in dog fights with enemy aircrafts. They really seemed to nail the flying controls and dog fights on the head in Halo 2.

Ingenuity: a lot of early shooters simply involved moving from point A to point B and to achieve and this you simply needed to have a very powerful gun with loads of ammunition. In Halo (like some of the others) strategy was really required to progress and strategy didn’t involve just shooting an exploding drum next to the enemy rather than shooting the enemy (like so many other shooters). In open areas you could find yourself on foot with a rifle that wasn’t going take out the enemy and you had to figure out a way of progressing.
In Halo 2 ideas like playing as an Elite allowed you to temporary go invisible and sneak up on the enemy. You could also use a Sword type weapon which was quite useful and it was a lot better than the melee attacks usually found in shooters. This made the game feel a little like a fighting game at times which was a refreshing change from shooting. Having said that I found some parts of Halo2 repetitive and on a couple of occasion I found myself thinking the level designers have really just reused a part of the game without any real effort. But you did get a range of environments from corridors to open areas.

Story: Whether you like the story or not, the game had a story with a mystery about what big Halo really was, it also had a story about the races in the game. The story was told as you played the game not hinted at during gameplay. Some may say you were spoon fed the story but I liked the pace and was glad I didn’t have to search the internet to workout what the story was really about.

So what is good about Halo/Halo 2 (single player) now?
Even with the vehicles and aircraft etc I suppose no very much because times have changed. Think about the poor reviews of Halo 2 on Vista, this tells us that if Halo 3 is simply a visual upgrade with a different story, a few extra vehicles and some upgraded weapons then we can expect some really poor reviews for Halo3.
Think of the cover system in recent shooters, think of how some of the newer shooters allow you to control your team members. Halo 3 may or may not have a cover system, it may or may not allow you to control your team members, but if it doesn’t offer anything that is innovated then there will be nothing special about Halo 3 regardless of the graphics and story.
So if the original poster was asking what is special about Halo 3? Then I really don’t know yet. It all depends on if it’s an ambitious game or just an upgraded cash cow. But having said that multiplayer mode is sure to be popular regardless of the single player mode.

Its the best multiplayer experience I have ever had...

1)Everybody has it so its easy to play and find people you know...

2) the weapons are balanced well, and has a great pace to it.

3) Just look at Resistance and compare it to the Halo 3 beta...which one was bettere???it wasnt even close...There are no better multiplayer FPS games out there

Single player was fine, im more of a multiplayer type of person though...

I disagree there, sport. Halo: CE was **** near perfect, landing it a 9.7, while Halo 2 faltered, getting a still impressive 8.5. And Halo 3 will have the good things from both things plus more, so I think I will give it a 9.8.

Halo brings nothing new to FPS so to be honest i have no idea whats so great about, I've beaten both so far which aren't great and i'm not looking forward to 3. The only way i'll play Halo 3 is if they release it on pc then i'll be an ass and download it.

You win this thread.

Halo pretty much brought FPS games to consoles, the step up in graphics and gameplay from anything available on the PS2 at the time was huge. Ground breaking. Yes, I had Golden Eye and Perfect Dark on the N64, they were ok but nothing like this.

Halo2 defined how online multiplayer should be done. Ground breaking.

And having played the first two, who can resist finishing the fight in the third?
