Nintendo has announced that more than 200,000 unique visitors have made use of its new Wi-Fi Connection service since last month's launch, logging nearly 3 million connections around the globe.

Wi-Fi Connection allows Nintendo DS owners to play titles such as Mario Kart DS and Tony Hawk DS online, via either Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless router or a special USB dongle.

The service launched alongside Mario Kart DS in the US on November 14th, with a European release following on November 25th. Since then, according to Nintendo, more than 45 per cent of DS owners have taken the game online.

So far, Nintendo has yet to confirm whether any third parties will publish games which make use of the Wi-Fi Connection service. The first party title, Animal Crossing: Wild World, is out today in the US, while Metroid Prime Hunters will hit the shops on March 20th.

This is showing what Nintendo can do and what the power of a free online service can achieve.

This means great great things to What Nintendo can do with the Revolution.
It begs the question what type of online experience do you expect with the revolution?

I expect it to be extremely simple to use and well moderated for childrens games. More than anything, Im hoping that Nintendo can "tame the wild" so that online play can be an enjoyable experience for families and young people. It's really hard to say what the Revo will bring to online since little is known about how you will be able to communicate with each other.

My main hope is that it won't be a noob-fest like Live was. Screaming 12 year olds are teh debil!

I have always said jokingly with my friends that the first person shooters microsoft creates shouldnt be rated M but that the mic should be. Giving one to anyone under 18 should be against the law.

And it's true, I reflect back on when I was into PC gaming during the quake/ut era in the mid to late 90s, and I try to think of why the online experience was better socially than xbox live.

I just have to think that lowering the age of those able to compete really did online gaming in at least for me. It used to be kids couldnt afford a 2k+ computer, but now everyone can afford an xbox. This is not to say that there werent those players with problems, or whiney kids... but it was a small segment, most were people using the mic for what it was supposed to be for, communication and teamwork.

Anyway right now nintendo's wifi system is a huge disappointment, it is nice to appreciate the simplicity which I think it should retain. But it is incredibly limited, im hoping they are able to update the wifi system for the DS and definetly for the rev... Although they are obviously on the right track, as the #s show.
