Just got a PS2, recommend me some games

Just got my hands on a PS2, for the first time. I've bought God of War, which is excellent. What other games would come recommended? I'm more of an action fan than anything else, GOW is almost a perfect game for me. :)

I have my eye on Shadow of the Colossus, what style of play is that? Also, what are MGS games like to play, I've heard they're quite cutscene intensive, not sure if I would enjoy that or not?

Shadow of Collosus is a must-have. (Its style of play is action/puzzle solving with a very cool minimalist type of story). MGS games are almost like playing a movie....its very cool if you are into that type of thing. As far as other action games I highly recommend the Prince of Persia games, Ratchet and Clank games and the Socom Games.

ummm... ps2 its been a while but besides GOW i think MGS 3 is good.... that colossus its okay but you really have to have time to get into it, because you have to eat exercise and then battle... to build your charecter up. i like fifa 05 or 06 im not sure but its the latest one on the ps2. i cant remember any other games that i liked... im sure there is more but i just cant remember. oh i know which one i liked a lot ... GTA San Andreas its about the only game i played on it since it came out... there is a lot to do in that game and it is very fun playing it. yea that hevenly swods is pretty **** good you should really save up for a ps3 but to fully enjoy your games you would need a HD TV also so its gonna get pretty **** expensive... but if your a big gamer you wont regret it. i spent 7g's total just to get a true HD experience with the ps3 and 6 games included.

Looking forward to this Shadow of the Colossus though. I hadn't even heard of it until today.

When I've beat GOW, that's next on my list.

I'll give Prince of Persia and R&C a look. Is SOCOM a FPS? If so, I'll give it a miss. The reason I got the PS2 was to give me a break from the 360's deluge of FPS's. :)

God of war 1 and 2, devil may cry1,2,3, Prince of persia1,2,3, Dynasty warrior3,4, Shadow of collosus, Resident evil4, final fantasy12, Rygar, castlevania lament of innocence and curse of darkness. Those would keep you busy awhile...

Most definitely Resident Evil 4. The PS2 version has some amazing extra features but the game itself is graphically fantastic on the PS2 and in my opinion one of the greatest games of all time. It's a survival horror but has alot of action, it's a good length with lots of variation and immense detail and plenty of boss fights and hundreds of enemies.

I'd also reccomend any of the GTA games for the PS2. King Kong, Tomb Raider Legend/Anniversary, Prince of Persia look great on the PS2 and are great adventure games. Although they are exploration games without constant action. Devil May Cry is also good if you like lots of fighting. You would really like Heavenly Sword if you had a PS3.

I think that the games to have on PS2 are God of War 1 and 2, and Resident Evil 4. Bully and GTA are the top of the line if you are into sandbox games. I think Socom is at least worth a look. I am not a big fan of FPS games myself, but I love Socom. It's a squad based 3rd person shooter that is all about tactics and stealth.

..as for Heavenly Sword, I am unsure. It could end up being God of War, but it could just as easily end up being Dynasty Warriors. Either way, the game is beautiful.

I agree. I play more PS2 games now on my PS3 than I did on my PS2! All these stunning next-gen titles that keep flashing before me that I can't play because they're going to be months off, have made me desperate for new games so I'm going through the PS2's back catalogue and getting games I never bothered to on release.

Have to say though they are not half as pleasing on the eye as the PS3 games I've seen so far. Bring on HS and UDF!

There's tons of games out for the PS2, all depends on your personal taste. Well if you have God of War then get number 2. Also get Devil May Cry 1 & 3 (2 was horrible but there is the Anniversary package), Shadow of the Collosus, Final Fantasy X and XII (if you want to try RPGs) and a lot of other games have already been said. But those are games I would recommend.

If you like Shadow of the Colossus then I would give Ico a try, I thought it was an amazing game. Also I would try Beyond Good and Evil, I just finished it and I was surprised on how good it was. It might be a long shot but Escape From Monkey Island was also a great game but only if you like that kind of game. You can get all of them for about 15 dollars a piece off of EBAY.

I would STRONGLY recommend a game called Rogue Galaxy. Its done by Level 5 and is a marvel on the PS2. Seamless loading during levels, and great game play. Combines aspects of the typical RPG with some new elements such as a real time combat system, as well as a weapon fusion system. I picked it up and I absolutely love it.

Plus you're a space pirate. Hard to go wrong there.

I think everything has been said. Personally i would add all of the Medal of Honors, Call of Dutys, and The Getaways. If you like drinking party games i would suggest the Buzz games. Buzz Junior is hilarious.

You should get RE4 just because of its lenght.
Its longest action game in history of video games.

Thanks, but I think I'll wait until I get a Wii before I get RE4. The Wiimote looks well suited to the game.

I personally love Shadow (even I have yet to finish it), God of War series, MGS series, and recently got addicted to the Jak and Daxter series. Also, Ace Combat series is a good'un, but the 6th is making it's way to the 360. Gameplay is pretty much identical throughout - the good stories are what sets them out IMO.

Yes I was thinking the same thing. If you are planing to get a Wii do that not only because of the Wiimote but because its better graphically on the Gamecube.

It's funny how you mention that you like God of War and are looking for similar games, then a few people start recommending you FPS, RPG, tactical shooters, platformers etc. It's ok if you want to diversify but since you mentioned you are looking for the same style of action games, I would add the following comments:

Shadow of the colossus is a great game, one of a kind, it is not however an action game like God of War or Ninja Gaiden. It has to do with positioning (running, climbing, jumping) almost like a platformer. The combat aspect of it is very simple compared to GoW as it is a single button attack once you are positioned.

Rogue Galaxy is a great JRPG and I would recommend it to anyone that liked FFXII or Dragon Quest VIII, as far as fulfilling a taste for real-time action fighting with combos, not really.

Socom is a great tactical shooter, as far as fulfilling a taste for real-time action fighting with combos, not really.

Besides God of War, obviously I would recommend God of War II. Since you just got a PS2, you appear not to be shy of older games, so I would next recommend Devil May Cry 1 and 3 and Prince of Persia 1 (sands of time) and 3 (two thrones) (in both cases, the second games in the series were not great imho). Another title I would recommend if you like the gory style of GoW is the first Mark of Kri; it looks like a Disney cartoon artwise, but trust me, it's not.

Once you are looking for other style of gaming, just say so and I'm sure you'll get many suggestions. The PS2 library is huge and diversified.

Guitar Hero. thats all you'll ever need. since i got it, i've spent more time on it than i have any other game. and i have only played about 3 games other than guitar hero's since i got it. its got lasting appeal, gameplay, multiplayer and to top it off A PLASTIC GUITAR! what more can a person want/need?

but yeah games!....

SOTC is highly recommended even though the framerate isnt all that.

devil may cry 1 or 3 (avoid 2 like its the plague...seriously) awesome games.

resi 4 is slower paced but cannot be missed. a true classic.

hitman blood money (slow but a good game nonetheless) takes time to play a level though.

burnout & gran turismo (crazy paced or simulatoristic, your preference)

cant go wrong with GTA's as you no doubt know... vice city being the best (BY FAR)

Well said. This is one of my favorite games of all time. It is a RPG but it is an action RPG where you wield a sword type weapon and gun type weapon at the same time. Level 5 is simply amazing, the graphics are fantastic and the whole game is on the whole.

I would reccomend Onimusha Dawn of Dreams for a great action game.

The only games i can recommend you are socom 1,2,3, and combined assault because were the only games i ever played other than gta's which were awesome!!!
