If i go to the trouble of heaving my pc into the lounge, and plug the PC USB port and the PS3 USB port together using (duh) a USB cable - will I be able to backup all my data to a folder on my PC HDD?

I wouldn't see why not. I didn't do it that way and I haven't read about anyone doing that either, but theoretically it sounds feasible.

I know thats not much help, but its my best educated guess.

let me know how it goes then. My PC is a beast (not that fast, but the case is HUGE), so i dont want to move it unless i have to. It's even harder to move the ps3 to the PC, because it's all linked thru my entertainment rig.

I don't know if the PS3 shows up as an external.
The PC would have to recognize the PS3 and the opposite for anything to happen.
I don't think this will work.

You cant do that anyways - two different ends. Both a computer and PS3 have the flat end not the squarish end (does that make sense?).

You would have to hook up and external of flash drive to the ps3 to backup - you cant do PS3 direct to computer.

Do what I did, use your iPod, just in the opposite direction.

I used mine to import videos.

That, or go get a gig flash card for next to nothing.

Are you kidding me?
There's such a thing as a USB cable with both A ends.

yeah because everyone has those laying around - not like they come with any common hardware.

I work in technology for a Fortune 500 company (relate this to size - not trying to sound like a BAMF) and I've seen those come across my desk maybe twice in my 4 years here. Yeah you could order one or just pick up a cheap flash drive which will get more use in the long run.

This might actually work. I don't really think it will, but I do have a Belkin USB cable that I've used before for transferring stuff from my old computer to the new. It has the 2 ends like that. I just don't think the machines will understand what you're trying to do with them.

Anyway, this information here might be helpful to you, so just in case:

make a backup on the HDD itself. Switch hard drives, get an encasing for your old HDD (Like 20 bucks), turning it into a portable HDD. Plug your old encased HDD into the PS3, and restore the data.

I have a question relating to this backup procedure.

I have a few games, that have been shared by people (Castlevania, TekkenDR etc). Can I back these up?

I have about 10 or so albums on my PS3, do these get backed up?

If they do not, whats the point of backing up?

And if they DO get backed up, im gonna need a 20GB Flash drive right?

From http://www.usb.org/about/faq/ans5/

Q5: How can I connect two PCs to each other with USB?
A5: You need a specialized USB peripheral known as a USB bridge (sometimes called a USB to USB adapter) to do this. Without a USB bridge, connecting a USB port of a PC directly to another PC's USB port can damage the computers

It wont back up everything, even if you do get it to work. If you want your new hard drive to have all your games and downloads, then you should get access to a drive mirroring program and then back it up. Otherwise, you will only be able to back up game saves, music, photos and videos. Not accounts or settings or any of the installed games. A mirror of the drive can be saved and then reinstalled on a bigger partition on a new drive and you would still ahve access to everything you do now without the problem of needing to go back and redownload it (or in the case of GTHD, just not having it anymore....)
