We're already driving into the weekend, expecting to hit the usual slowdown on updates, however, recent developments in the QJ forums (thanks for the tip, Glynnder (http://www.qj.net/tags/glynnder/6753)!) have made us think that this is probably one of the homebrew community (http://www.qj.net/tags/homebrew-community/8885)'s most intense weeks in a long time. The OE source code (http://www.qj.net/Open-Edition-Firmware-Reversed-Source-Code-Released/pg/49/aid/99320), Team Wildcard (http://www.qj.net/tags/team-wildcard/14220)'s 3.40 LE CFW (http://www.qj.net/Team-Wildcard-releases-3-40-LE-PSP-Custom-Firmware/pg/49/aid/99357), Dark AleX (http://www.qj.net/tags/dark-alex/5160) actively talking (http://www.qj.net/Dark-AleX-wasn-t-hired-but-actively-talking-to-Sony-/pg/49/aid/99380) to Sony, and now... a Nintendo DS Emulator (http://www.qj.net/tags/nintendo-ds-emulator/11892) on the PSP.

For all intents and purposes though, and right off the bat, we'd have to say that we can't host the download. One of the main reasons is that the emulator taps into the BIOS (http://www.qj.net/tags/bios/565) - thus leading to its illegality - and the second reason being its infantile stage. We hear the emulator isn't working all that perfect; running games ends up in lock ups and glitches.

So right now, we'd just have to report about its existence, and for the sake of discussion, talk about the implications. One of the biggest hurdles here, of course, is that, how would a DS emulator work without the DS' biggest features: the touchscreen? The experience of getting to play the real Nintendo DS will be watered down in an emulated Nintendo DS on the PSP, but see, isn't that what emulators are defined as?

We know you have a lot of questions, proclamations, and out bursts of joy. So we'll leave you with two options: 1) you may comment below, or 2) proceed to the forum thread for an in-depth discussion.

I always thought it was possible but I didn't expect it to happen this soon

Thats what i'd suggest. I think thats how it is does on PC too.

But when you think about it, the DS is under a 95MHz, the PSP is a 333MHz. Plus DS games are only about 120mb.
So in all seriousness it could be done, PSP has the the higher tech needed to preform it.

WOW, i love the comments of this. The DS fanboys are all in damage control, lol.

Don't expect this emulator to work perfectly! In fact, don't expect it to work on most commercial games, and the ones that do start - don't expect those to be playable.

Neat to know of its existence, but it'll probably take a full year+ until we see it at a semi-playable stage. Only if the developer continues it, of course! Adding a dynarec might help it out, but I'm not even sure how well the DS games are emulated on the PC, or how well the emulation process has been documented.

I don't understand why someone would want to do that. The games would be much less playable without the touch screen.

Exactly. Pretty much every DS game I've played uses the touchscreen.

It is like the iPhone NES emulator, good idea but horrible control. Since the iPhone has no hard buttons you have to use the touch screen with a graphic of a controller and the developer himself says it sucks.

Get her a DS, not only does this emulator require hacking your PSP but it would take years for it to work perfectly

besides the DS design and games is much more suitable for young children

I saw a video on Youtube showing off the emulator and it looks terrrible

the thing was clugging along at only 2 fps,

Also how is it possible to play the games with the screens turned on it side?

also it's my understanding that a machine running emulator needs to be at least 5 times as powerful to what it's running (unless it has similar hardware than that ratio is shortened), with a very narrow allowence gap the emu developer is going to struggle to get a working emulator going

Those are just estimations. I mean, the GBA emulated several SNES games pretty well with an SNES emulator, and some of the SNES's specs were higher then the GBA's. It just depends on the game.

I find this pointless myself, the main feature of the DS is the touch screen like they have said and without it takes a lot of fun out of the majority of the games.

Oh the irony.

You know that this won't really play games.....it basicly brings home the point that PSP is faster then DS.

(Does anyone NOT know that?)

This is hilarious. Now I can make fun of my DS-owning friends! (Hey, they don't know that it can't run commercial games, do they?);)

i doubt this emulator could ever be functional....the n64 emulator still pretty much not playable for most games. But i hear that the nest version of n64 emu will have some serious speed boost. Still this is a cool concept, but never playable i think.
