View Full Version : What are some great, but not so well known used PS2 games?

I'm really enjoying going to EBGames lately and picking up PS2 titles for $5-10. I'm really surprised at the quality of some of these games. It's also cool to be able to pick up something really fun with pocket change.
Anyways, since PS2 games can be had for cheap...what are some really great PS2 titles worth buying that are lesser known about? I'm not interested in big titles cause those are obvious. I'm interested in those ones that are $5 bucks and awesome, just never got promoted when they were originally released, and therefore was under most people's radar.
All games are welcome. I prefer Action, FPS, Action RPG's, Platformers, also games with novel/different concepts, gameplay, etc.
Well, from platformers, Psychonauts is definitely one game you should buy. Such a great game that, sadly, no one bought.
Hmm maybe Psi-ops if you haven't played it?

I always thought 'Haunting Ground' was pretty overlooked. Pretty much uses the same engine as RE4, a nice twisted story, and controlling the dog ads a really nice twist to the game.
Not sure if its that 'lesser known' though.
Fahrenheit (aka Indigo Prophecy in the US/Canada) is a brilliant game. Like an interactive movie with alternate endings. Good graphics and good gameplay.
Beyond Good & Evil is a great game which had very good critics, but didn`t sell a lot. I liked it because of the good story, great gameplay and original ideas (it`s from the Rayman creator)
I hope that one time they make a sequel...

All these are good suggestions. Some of these I've been wanting to play awhile ago but forgot about, there are a few I haven't heard of.
Keep the suggestions coming. I want to get together a master list of awesome PS2 games to get. PS2 games are still great, and if you can get 3-6-to even 10 games for the price of a brand new PS3 game, it's definitely worth it to explore.

Psychonauts, Psi-ops, and Beyond Good & Evil sound good. Indigo Prophecy and Haunting Ground I've never heard of, so I'll look into those.
Okami looks cool. I'm going to wait until the used prices for that get around $10 before I pick it up though.

How is Shadow of the colossus a action rpg?
I say its a platforming puzzle game.

Seriously....Shadow of the Colossus is a must-buy. It has great graphics and it's a great platforming puzzle game with a fantasy twist.
I also suggest Beyond Good and Evil, it's pretty good. There's also Soul Caliber III. It's pretty cheap these days.

ICO is one great game. It was made when the PS2 first came out by the same team that did Shadow of the Colossus. It is a hard game to find.

I played Shadow of The Colossus recently, and honestly I hated it. It felt like it was an unfinished game plain and simple. It was like.."we haven't even finished this game but we got to hurry it up and meet the deadline...I got an idea...why don't we just save ourselves the trouble of putting in a story-line, improving character control and mechanics, and adding in those things we planned which lead up to boss battles. We can just fake it and act like we planned it to be exactly like this. It will work, trust me."
I dunno, that game was all hype to me.

That is how the game was supposed to be. If you played ICO, you would understand the style of games made by this studio. There is infact a very deep storyline, but instead of throwing out in front of your face it lets you interpret and figure it out on your own.

You should give Okami a try. Not well known and a great game.
I would say PSI Ops, Champions of Norrath (loved this game), the Warriors, and Rygar (definitley cheap).

Okami is not an unhyped game at all. IGN gave it so much coverage but yeah it's a magnificent game. And, SoTC is one of the best, most unique games ever made in consoles and it is my favorite.
Coming to the topic a decent game which you may find in the bargain bin is "Blood Will Tell". Its pretty good. Its a hack-and-slash with a nice storyline.
If you wanna FPS you can't go wrong with Black. Nice modern story, fairly long, looks sweet, and is cheap now!!
It was the last PS2 game I bought before I retired the ol girl :)

OK, I went and got some used games this week.
I got Psi-Ops, Killer 7, Red Dead Revolver, and Sega Genesis Collection.
I played Sega Genesis coll. and RDR. I liked RDR. I want to trade in SGC for Capcom Classics 1. I only bought the game cause I never owned a sega system and wanted to play those games once and for all. Now that I have I could have done without. No wonder Nintendo was killing Sega back in the day. Nintendo games were just much better IMO. That's off topic though.
I saw Capcom Classics the other day and want that badly. I loved most of those games when I was a kid and look forward to playing them again. I would have bought it but it was a new copy. I want to hold out and wait for a used copy since new copies lose their value so much and I like the idea of saving $.
I also went game shopping with a friend and he told me about a game called Shadows of Destiny which sounds really good as well. I might check that out. It's got a really interesting concept.
You should at least beat Shinobi 3 before selling Sega Genesis collection. I was playing that the other day, great game I must say.

Too late! I just traded it in to get Capcom classics. I guess I really needed to relive my childhood. haha
I don't want to go too overboard with buying ps2 games, even though most games are pretty cheap. I got 4 titles I haven't even played yet and 5 that I still have to finish so far, and 3 that are finished.
I really got my eyes on Shadows of Destiny. I think it will be hard to find locally though.
Primal is something I've seen around a lot. Don't know anything about it. I'll look into it. Thanks.

3rd person shooter with squad based tactics. A great game and it was a lot of fun to go back and try again and again, multiple ways to beat each level. Fairly difficult even on easy so you won't beat it right away.

Some more good reccomendations.
I saw some games that piqued my interest like Conflict: Desert Storm, Vietcong: Purple Haze, Conflict: Vietnam, Shellshock: 'Nam 67.
They are all war titles, and they all seem very similar. I"m just wondering if any of these are worth picking up? I'm particularly interested in the "Nam" titles.

You say you like action RPG. You should get Champions of norrath like someone said. Its great but I would also recommend you Baldurs gate the best action RPG ever. The same people made Champions and Baldurs.
But you must play Baldurs gate especially the first one. That water still amazes me. It has co-op. Its so much fun playing it with someone. You have 3 characters to choose. They are so good.
Try it please.

If you liked Baldur's Gate that much you should play the original PC game Baldurs Gate + Tales of the Sword Coast and Baldurs Gate 2: Shadow of Amn. Both destroy the PS2 Baldur's Gate games IMO.

Metal gear is worth it especially if you are planning to get MGS4.

I'm guessing between $30-35 US.
As far as Indigo Prophecy...I do have a PS2. I had one for years but I never used it. Last gen my favorite was Xbox, so that is what I bought most of my games for. I mostly used my PS2 to play Vice City and as an extra DVD player. I had a few other games for it, but nothing really great or memorable. I sold most of them off..I picked some really poor games..good riddance.
I'm really just now getting into the whole playstation thing. It's cool cause the lack of good PS3 titles never bothered me, cause I'm too busy catching up on PS2 titles to really notice. By the time I'm done with the PS2 titles there should be a bunch more PS3 titles to choose from.

I hate PC games and their style of play. Baldurs gate for PC is different from ps2. On PC you always have to click on things and I hate that. That's why I had ps1, ps2 and now ps3. I have no interest in PC . I have only played RTSs on it.
Its best action RPG for ps2 that's what this discussion is about.

I'd go with SotC or Ico. Ico really caught me by surprise, I got it for last christmas, and it took awhile to find, only 1 EBgames (out of 5) had it in my city. And it was obviously they one thats far away. But pick up BOTH those games, they're classic (especially since SotC is going for 20 bucks, greatest hits now).

SoTC is without a 'shadow' of a doubt, one of the best and most path-breaking games ever made. Depending on your abilities it can take anywhere between 8 and 16 hours to complete it and the style of gameplay is radically different from most other games. I purchased it when it was newly released and its worth that price too.

Indigo Prophecy. The entire Legacy of Kain series minus Blood Omen 2. The LOK series is the BEST series that no one really played. The only downside is that Defiance left it open for one last chapter but Amy Henning left Edios and it seems that without her they have no intention of finishing it.
Shadow of the Colossus. If you liked Castlevania SOTN then pick up Curse of Darkness, it got bad reviews for a great game. Funny thing is everyone raves how SOTN was the best ever and COD is literally taking that concept and going from 2d to 3d.
Shellshock: `Nam 67 is very good (from the Guerrilla Guys), its bloody, has nice gameplay and good ideas. You start missions from an american base, where you can trade things you stole from the vc for special weapons, some *sexytime* ;-) and other things - really immersive...

Indigo Prophocies is a great game, for the ps2.
I don't know how you define a 'Big Title' but I quite liked Max Payne and I seem to be the only person around my area who has it, the graphics are quite poor but gameplay is good. And Gladiator-Sword of Vengence great graphics but gameplay can get a bit repetative... Or Shadow of Rome, because as far as novel concepts go, cutting off both someones arms and hitting him with them is quite novel, to me at least. I'm sure all of those games are fairly well known but they're good none-the-less.

Easy..
Freedom Fighters
Tactical action game, technically top-notch - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Actually, I find it very depressing that there wasn't any successor to this game. It's from the same guys who made the Hitman series, BTW.
Drakan, The Ancient's Gates
An action RPG (or action adventure) with stylish graphics, cool dragon riding, and some free-world roaming (ok, not the scale of GTA, and some horrendous loading times between different parts of the world, but still fascinating). The Zelda-style lock-on fighting works very well, and there are plenty of caves and dungeons to explore for side-quests.
Mercenaries
OK, with Mercs 2 coming on nextgen hardware, it's gained some reputation again, but the first Mercenaries game wasn't really a big hit. Undeservedly so, I'd say, since it's like GTA, but with a heavy emphasis on blowing up stuff. Technically it's only average, and driving vehicles (at least cars) sucks to a degree, but the action part is so great that it makes up for everything else. Just note that you really ought to play that game with a rumble controller...

Gypsykid, your certainly living up to your name if you couldnt appreciate shadow of the colossus im playing at the mo for the first time and i would certainly consider it in the top 5 games ive EVER played. Yes there arent really any cut scenes, or dialogue, or enemies except bosses, but this is agame of unprecedented scale. It takes the art of making a video game to a new level, and shows what sony can really do, and that is make a game that is not just absorbing and enjoyable its also a joy to behold.

Games are a matter of opinion. Trust me, I appreciate quality and classic games. SOC...I believe..is more hype than anything. Sure the bosses are big and cool and it's a novel idea. I just don't like the game, and the execution. There are TONS of other games that are better than SOC and do a better job at showing what PS2 can do. I honestly think people are just wowed by the big monsters, and can't look past that and see that it isn't a great game...it's just rather...ok.
And what are you getting at by saying I'm living up to my name? That's not cool! In fact it's kind of a lame thing to say. Rather you are referring to the word Gypsy or Kid or Both...just don't go there.

Graphically SoTC might not have pushed the PS 2 to its limits but the game was of an epic level in every aspect. Its background score was one of the best in gaming, its controls were comfortable, gameplay was smooth and easy for those with brains. In fact considering the scale of things the graphics were good. You could see every hair on the colossus and his horse had near perfect physics.
My only point is that even though it may be in the bargain bin it's a very well known PS2 game.
