"Xbox 360"
Until Microsoft makes their official announcement on it, this one is still firmly in the rumor category, but we’ve gotten word from one of our trusted sources that Microsoft has pretty much settled on a name for the next Xbox: the Xbox 360 (let that sink in for a moment, because you’re probably going to be hearing it a lot for the next several years). Our source, who has worked on several projects involving the Xbox and the Xbox 360, has seen the proposed packaging and other design elements for the new console, and says that as of right now the console is being branded as the “Xbox 360.” That’s definitely not that first time we’ve heard that mentioned as one of the possible names for the next-generation Xbox; last year a marketing firm conducted a survey where they asked people whether they thought Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or Nintendo N5 sounded more “next-gen” (apparently Microsoft was worried that calling their new console the “Xbox 2” would make it seem older or less “cutting-edge” than the PlayStation 3).
Found it here ----> http://engadget.com/entry/1234000760030410/
hmm, well in terms of what this probably means for design of the console, we're looking at some sort of circular shape, by i doubt spherical cause it is so impractical but if that is the name they go with, then there has to be some sort of curves built into it.
Also i kind of like the idea of panoramic games, of course that probably isn't what they mean, but it would still be nice.

I personally don't really like the name. But it is possible that once released it could grow on me. :?
Irregardless of the name chosen, expect to hear it referred to as "Xbox" a lot. That is the main brand they are trying to build.
Round, NO, curvy, yes.

hmmm.... siren didn't fight the rumor stating it was false. So that tells me 1 of 2 things.
A. The next Xbox will be called Xbox 360.
or
B. Microsoft is honestly still considering the Xbox 360 name and haven't made a final choice.
no if they are actually planning on releasing THIS calendar year, they have a name.
They already have the name, cardboard standees, posters, and commercials being made. They might not all be finished (just like something drastic might force them to change the name), but they already have their advertising campaign laid out. (Name of a product is part of the advertising, duh) It would be suicide to just shoot from the hip against Sony, who has already proven that they can put companies out of buissness with just hype (dreamcast).
edit: Curves don't really surprise me much, looked at the new caddy? all the new american cars have sharp lines that are themselves gental curves. Quite sharp looking, and from and advertising really brilliant, trying to associate american influence to make the public recognize their product as american, even if the public doesn't realize it.

Xbox2, Nextbox, Xenon, Xbox Next, Xbox 360.. does it really matter what they name of the system is.. im sure everyone will be referring it to just a regular xbox. Why not name it galactic pink warrior in a square box?

Why not name it galactic pink warrior in a square box?
Because that would assuredly scare some people away. They should put a Hello Kitty emblem on the front while they're at it.
Wow, can you imagine the little girls that would overrun this site if that happened? :D
well, now that i have THAT visual forever ingrained in my skull...(having to walk home through the bad part of town with a big pick box with giant hello kitty emblem on it)
The more that i think about this name the more i dislike it. Generally a good name is catchy, and you would want to talk about, just because it was on the top of your mind. This doesn't do it for me. It sinks right to the bottom and promtly squirts out my ears. I can't see such a name ending up being used, unless they were planning on something associate dwith the console that makes it neccessary (i.e. spins, hologram, 3d)
Just doesn't sound strong, and no amount of advertising is going to make me feel that a circle is stronger then the number 3....hmmm wait a minute....(insert ironically questioning original thoughts...)
I actually think the name is pretty good. From what I have seen of the system and what they are trying to accomplish it actually makes sense.
On top of it, anything is catchy if you position it right.
How about the following names? They make even less sense than Xbox 360
Vaio
Wega
Yet both of those are actually very well know Sony brands.

How is making sense, and being catchy the same thing? I get what he is saying it has got to be catchy. How much sense does X-Box Zeon make? none, but It is hella lot more catchy Zeon, or even how about X-Sphere, get rid of that whole "Box" image that they are trying to lose. I know they got a big pissing contest with Sony, and are trying to not look like inferior system, but I dont think 360 is it, i know they worked the "3" into the name but I think they would of been better going with something that makes no sense but is still catchy.

They are trying to come back to the same point? Xbox 360 is far from being a good name. (In my personal opinion) Anyway, a mod over at TXB has already confirmed that the name of the next Xbox won't be anything we've heard yet (including X360).
Actually, those names (Vaio and Wega) both make plenty of sense.
Vaio is an acronym for "Video Audio Integrated Operation".
Wega was a German audio and video manufacturer that became a subsidiary of Sony. It eventually became swallowed into Sony, and Sony uses the name for their TVs.

I have to disagree with you there. 360 has all kinds of bad connotations with it, and in general it is a good idea to use metaphors that you can predict as to how the audience will react.
Air Jordan's by nike. Air was added because when you hear air you think flying, freedom, superman. With "Jordan" you immediately get a very specific image of Michale Jordan dunking the ball from the foul line, and scine you can wear these shoes, the images gets transfered to you doing the same.
Now by the same analysis, lets say "Xenon", "Xbox 360" and "Xenon 360"
The following are answers i got from collegeus as first thing that popped into their heads
Xenon = chemical, glowing, light, futuristic, scientific, edgy, extreme
Xbox 360 = Xbox connotations (size, graphics, personal experience) circular, surrounding, spinning, all encompasing, complete, everything, all the time (??)
Xenon 360 = Metallic, machinery, green, glowing, powerful, motion, speed
These answers all came from other people and i kind of disagree with some of them, but it sounds like people like the "Xenon 360" the most, They really seem to like saying the word.

They're not going to throw away the "Xbox" name after building up the franchise.

IMO the Xenon is the coolest one out of those. for some reason I wouldnt like it if microsoft put any numbers in the name like Xbox 2 or Xbox 360.

I just thought of a name for the next Xbox...
1st. Code named Xenon
Xenon is a noble gas from the periodic table of elements that is used in super powerful lights.
Xe is the Symbol for this element.
X - Xbox
e - Evolution
Xbox Evolution or the Xe
EDIT:: Is it me or is this concept of the X2 oddly good? The color choice sucks, but that could change over time. Anyone, know who did this? Rather are we sure its a fan?
http://www.ccfx.net/nextbox/images/xbox2/pages/concept7_c.html
Rounded controller, smoothed edges, plenty of room for a "hood scoop" HDD attacxhment... look at the concept "bottom" deisgn, which reminded me of that. Also, the honey comb structure does relate, though not directly, to Xenon in a chemical chrystalin structure sort way, you know.
Advertisements could play up the science/chemistry angle too. Elemental to gaming entertainment Xe... Xbox Evolution.

I dont really like that design you brought to everyones attention.. its in no way any smaller in area then the xbox if i look at it right now.. the only thing is its thinner from top to bottom. Siren said its dramtically smaller.. so all these mock ups are fake.. and that controller looks like something a dreamcast would sh*t out, definetly not feeling the honey comb design either. but Xbox Evolution is a good concept name to go with.

hmm i think 360 would have more to do with how you can position it. Having all wireless controlers for instance you could sit anywhere around it hence 360.
Or maybe the console is capable of more than one monitor out. Maybe you can hook 3 screens up to it at once. Ofcourse this would only be a 180 degree field of view but you see my point in that if they did call it the Xbox 360 they probably made it function to fit the name.
I think the name will be something different though. Its important to early marketing of an anticipated product to 'leak' out information purposly to get public opinion and start early hype.
This probably has nothing to do with that name, but maybe 360 has something to do with the graphics of the system. This genereation is often refered to as the 128 bit generation. If the graphics were of that quality, I would definetely like to get a look at it.

360 has nothing to do with the bitrate of the console, just a name. ;) The next-gen consoles are actually going to be based on 64-bit architecture.
mckmas8808
02-27-2005, 21:57
I never understood the bit architecture thing. With NES being 8bit, SNES bieing 16bit, PSone was 32bit. So what does that even mean? I mean N64 was a 64 bit system, so how can the PS3 and Xbox 360 also be 64bit.
PeanutButterMunky
02-27-2005, 23:45
Most PCs are 32-bit, and now 64-bit architectures are being introduced. I can't explain any technical aspects, but the "bit" isn't so important a thing to be concerned with.
Epsilon-Zero

current consoles use 128bit graphics processors and use 32bit CPUs.
i believe the N64 used both a 64bit graphics processor and a 64bit CPU.
correct me if im wrong here
PeanutButterMunky
02-28-2005, 02:09
I'm certain that's wrong. There's no way that the N64 had a 64-bit CPU. Those weren't even around when the N64 was released.
Epsilon-Zero
02-28-2005, 05:44
umm yah they were. Servers have been using 64bit processors for over 10 years
also explains why devs complained about how hard it was to develop for.
MS still havent said a word on what the name will be, and were also speculateing the name PS3, so i wouldnt count on anything at this point till MS have their public announcement, E3 will be most likely, i have my doubts about GDC in March but its growing speculation that it will.
Still my main concern is will Sony have a fully working PS3 in a playable form before E3? but theres no point dicussing that because this thread wasnt made for it. So speculate away!

I can't say anything about the N64.. but the ps2 is a 128bit processor, making use of 2 64bit "SPE"s, as everyone seems to be calling them now.
The xbox uses a 32bit cpu and 32bit ram
Think of bits as a tube of sorts... and think of GHZ as the speed stuff goes through the tube... its a bit rough as an example, but it holds... to further elaborate.
If you have 200MHZ (say that means pushing 200 things through a second) and you push stuff through a 32bit wide tube you can get 32 things times 200 a sec through. Now say you use push things through at a rate of 100 a second or 100MHZ and use 64bit wide tube, well, you get 64 things times 100... the same.
Now, the ps2 runs a 128bit cpu at 300MHZ with 2x64bit SPEs the Xbox is a 32bit cpu at 733MHZ with 32bits RAM (as I recall, I might be wrong.. I don't have much info on X1... everytime I google I just get X2 stuff insead -_-), do the math and you can see how important the relationship is.
EDIT:: AHA!! I've been looking for this stupid post!!! I made some mistakes I need to correct. I believe the ps2 actually uses a smt 2x threaded 64bit processor, giving it 128bit processing... it isn't single threaded, like I suggested. My bad, I apologize for any missinformation.

Level 5, the company responsible for developing hits such as Dragon Quest VIII and Rogue Galaxy, have announced that they will be developing a new RPG for the PlayStation 3. Although no English name has been revealed yet, a rough translation of the Japanese name would be White Knight Story.
Level 5 has announced that the game will be a fantasy RPG and that players will take control of a boy who finds an ancient artifact capable of transforming him into a 7-metre tall White Knight from ancient times.
The source of the announcement is Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, and the article also revealed that the game's produce is Akihiro Hino, the man who is currently president at Level 5. More information on the game will also be revealed at the Tokyo Game Show, which will kick off tomorrow and end on the 2nd.
