Mitsubishi Poised for a 3D Blu-ray Player
At a recent golfing event here in the US, Mitsubishi took some journalists and asked them to strap some 3D glasses (a little smaller than the ones shown in the photo) to their face and take a look at the demo of some new 3D-imaging technology the company is working on.

All in all, it was reported that the 3D worked quite well. But the big story from the day was that Mitsubishi has a Blu-ray player in its labs that can convert existing 2D movies into 3D on the fly. Even better, the company hinted that it may be available early next yer.

Although the company didn't want to talk pricing, it did say that it was in talks with one video game console manufacturer to install this 3D technology into existing systems. Hmmm. Well it can't be the Wii, so is it the PS3 or Xbox 360?

Hmmmmm......... console with Blu-Ray ?

Who could they be talking about ?

[EDIT] - New information from CNET :

In an effort to inject new life into the fading rear-projection category, the company's pitch was that the 3D technology worked with existing DLP TVs and projectors (due to DLP's native 120Hz refresh rate, which allows you to split it into 60/60 for 3D) but not with LCD and plasma displays.

There you go, Mitsubishi looking after their electronics manufacturing business. So IF Sony release a Mitsubishi backed 3D solution, you can bet it will not work on your LCD or Plasma. Otherwise the only money Mitsubishi would make would be on the sales of the goggles only. Not worth their time IMHO.

SONY, its obvious! Microsoft is in the HD-DVD camp, this is BluRay we are talking here.

Wouldn't that be one helluva firmware update :) Couple that with a PSEye and you have some VERY interesting repercussions!

I really love 3D, but it puts strain on my eyes and typically triggers my migraines. Pretty impressive if true though, although I find myself doubting the extent at which this 3D goes.

Wow, what a shot to the HD DVD camp. I know they're trying many different things and touting better quality but this will shut them up for sure.

I wonder if they can get this working in conjunction with PVR.

3D Tv shows, how sweet would that be

Could this 3D implemention work on exsisting Bluray players or will the Bluray players have to support it?

Its Sony for sure. I was just at a TV training, and Mitz and Sony have been working on a bunch of stuff together as of late. The 3D stuff looked pretty promising as well.

I believe the cell is capable of converting 1080p footage into 3D masterpieces....It would require 3D glasses and a firmware update though.....

i hate 3d glasses :(

however phillips should be releasing their 3D HDTV in 2008 whch DOESN't need glasses. it tricks the brain to see a 3D image without glasses on.

now if you can get it working with that TV you are truely going to be in the next gen. O M F G!

I think I would prefer 3d glasses to that Philips tv. The tv looked tiny and unimpressive. I want to be immersed by 3d content, not have it leap out of a tiny 19" screen.

I know that there is 3d glasses, but what about 3d lenses?
That would be really cool if they would work out a way to apply them easily

yeah i read about this already...and it is manufacturing a Blu-ray player system that would be 3D compatible...but if the tech works...it would be a nice add-on to the current blu-ray players...even the PS3...games in 3d...wow...

We will definately be playing hi-res 3d games by the middle of this generation.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the Mitsubishi HD TV that Mitsu has been working on. It's a DLP-based system, but it incorporates lasers instead, making the form-factor equal to that of a plasma or LCD TV/monitor. Allegedly, the display for that tv was said to look far crisper (and produced far better color saturation) than did even their best current plasma tv setup. Also, apparently that Laser HD TV was supposed to be able to create screen images that appeared to be in 3D without the need for glasses. Hmmm...I wonder if there's a link here, or if the two incidents are completely unrelated.

There's a couple of different 3d technologies out there, the first is the familiar red green lenses which as Bakari elluded to causes lots of people headaches(literally) but is cheap to implement. The other is the one used by the military in training sims and by 3d amusement rides, this has been much more expensive to implement but significantly increases the duration that users can watch (no more headaches). It sounds like this would be a variation of the latter and thus a very promising technology.

Why? Sony makes DLP TVs, so do alot of others. Not everyone gets a plasma.

Chances are many of you have worn polarized lenses in sunglasses. wearing 3d glasses would be a similar experience.

UMM, Sony does NOT make any DLP Tv. They never have and never will. They did however make LCD rear pro, and now LCOS rear pros.

As for the goggles, Mitz is making them for there TV sets as an add-on. They are expensive, and I doubt will take off unless they sell them with consoles also. Since Sony and Mitz have been working together on the TV front as of late with the 120hz processing to be exact, it would make sense that they would work together further.

Sounds interesting, kinda like the Michael Jackson 3D shows at Disney Land, or the Terminator and Shrek ones at Universal Studios. Except the 3D never worked so well on me because my left eye is basically blind...so without much depth perception its hard to see a lot of it fully.

But see it says not Plasma or LCD's, but with the new ones coming out with 120htz capability so I don't see any problems there, the problem will be with older sets only 60htz capable.

Put on your blue and red 3D glasses! (or polarized sunglasses)

Will have to see it to believe it. If it uses software to create polygonal faces and then renders it twice from slightly different viewpoints to make 3d, that's ok (but won't look as good as a movie, it'll look like a game).

I think they're just simulating it by post-processing -- you won't see any extra detail that wasn't in the original by watching it in 3d. I'm being skeptical about this. (and it's not sony -- they make tvs. I'm pretty sure it's XBOX).

It will be with Sony as a console maker, but you can use it on any new Mitz TV for sure

Hey I actually have something cool to say. Believe me if you want...

I was working at Circuit City earlier today and a Mitsubishi Rep came in to talk about the new TVs and such (reps come in periodically).

And he said something about this new feature (only in newer TVs) how it has some chip to decode certain 3D images. He gave one example where if you are playing split-screen, you can put on glasses to where it will only show your half of the screen and it will eliminate screen looking. He wasn't too elaborate but that was all I was able to get out of him.

He also said that it will be out in a couple of years :o

Oh yeah, he said this technology will be able to be effective on the PS3 and the next generation XBOX (the one after the 360).

DLP, SXRD same difference. It's still 2 million mirrors on a chip.

Haven't seen anything yet on Mitz's goggles, a link would be appreciated. Thanks.

THis CELL saga will rupture the market for electronics...so I guess Philips will play along ...Paramaount is screwed if they just want to end the war with these tactics they pulloff

So on the top will be he Blu-ray manufactures and Blu-ray followers.....Paramount give it up and let the HDD developers bleed....I don't need them.

NO, Its not the same. Not even close. SXRD is LCD, or LCOS to be exact. Its 3 LCOS chips with 2mill+ Pixels, not mirrors. Each chip has a 1920x1080 native resolution.

DLP isnt even close to that. Its a single DMD with a little over 1 million mirrors. The MAX resolution on any DLP set is 960 x 1080. It then Wobbles the mirrors to get to 1920 x 1080. Now this may be fine for some, but for people who want what they pay for its not. I for one can tell the difference. In slow motion no. In fast motion for sure. The chips cant keep up.

As for the Goggles, there is no link that I have found. Everything I know came from a Mitz rep. at a training I was at for there crappy DLPs.
