View Full Version : Blu-Ray Possibility?

I don't know if Blu-ray will eventually be similar to DVD's in that it'll have a reader/writer drive.
But if it was possible to have a BD-ROM writer drive, would it be possible to save game information right on the game disk? Each game disk could potentially be its own save device. I don't want to get into an argument of whether or not its a good idea. I just want to know if its possible for the hardware... could a game be paused to burn save data onto the disc that the game is being played from?
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas took up 4.19 Gigs. I put it in my DVD drive on my PC to find out. Lets say the next GTA installment is 3 times 'bigger'. That'd be 15Gigs. BD-ROM holds 54Gigs, that would leave 39Gigs for storage.
Possible? Good idea or bad?

It's what the Snes did for some games. SMW had a battery inside it to save data on the cart. I would like that but could cause problems like renting and such.
I don't know if it's even possible.

Geez, I never thought about the rental aspect of it. I guess it would be a little strange having someone elses saved game on your disc. But for one of the Mario games on the N64 (it was the one where you fought the bad-butt turtle in the dojo)I rented the game twice, and I wrote down the case number so when I rented it the second time I could get the saved game back. I just had to hope that it wasn't saved over.

39 gigs for storage!!!!???? are you insane? you need like 100 megs at most....even for next gen. i would rather have them use the space for higher textures, better detail in game, BIGGER maps and more game interactivity and all that.

I think that if Blu-Ray dvd's come out it will be nice...It will rock and be one of the greatest DVD but it will cost you about some money around $1,000 or a little bit more...Later

not sure what you're trying to say. you mean put DVD movies on blu ray? possible, and most likely will be done, especially with movies that have numerous parts (like sagas). you could easily have the entire LOTR collection on one BD. but personally i look forward to having 1080p movies :D
ps: Chrisdaone, please don't overuse smileys, and if you haven't allready done so, read the forum rules.

I don't know if Blu-ray will eventually be similar to DVD's in that it'll have a reader/writer drive.
It won't be similar to DVD's as compared to the HD DVD format, its main competitor, Blu-ray has more information capacity per layer, 25 instead of 15 gigabytes, but may initially be more expensive to support.
Blu-ray gets its name from the shorter wavelength (405 nm) of a "blue" (technically blue-violet) laser that allows it to store substantially more data than a DVD, which has the same physical dimensions but uses a longer wavelength (650 nm) red laser.
A single-layer Blu-ray disc (BD) can fit 23.3, 25, or 27 GB; this is enough for approximately four hours of high-definition video with audio. A dual-layer BD can fit 46.6, 50, or 54 GB, enough for approximately eight hours of HD video. Capacities of 100 GB and 200 GB, using four and eight layers respectively, are currently being researched; TDK has already announced a prototype four-layer 100 GB disc
The BD-RE (rewritable) standard is available, along with the BD-R (recordable) and BD-ROM formats, which became available in mid-2004, as part of version 2.0 of the Blu-ray specifications. BD-ROM pre-recorded media are to be available by early 2006.
Also, in addition to 12 cm discs, an 8 cm variation for use with camcorders is planned that will have a capacity of 15 GB.
To ensure that the Blu-ray Disc format is easily extendable (future-proof) it also includes support for multi-layer discs, which should allow the storage capacity to be increased to 100GB–200GB (25GB per layer) in the future simply by adding more layers to the discs

I think for this to happen, all games would have to be recorded on a BD ROM disc. My DVD cam corder (uses small DVDs) does the same thing. If you use a regular DVD, once it's recorded, that's it. With the ROM disc, you can read and write multiple times, no problems.
The DVD ROM discs were expensive though. Over double the cost. With an integrated HDD in every PS3, I doubt Sony or anybody else is very worried about game saves.

I agree....you sure as hell dont need 39 gigs for save and for the most point if a game is dev on the PS3 they are sure to use more than 4.19 G sense they know that they can fit more on a BluRay Disk!?! Makes sense to me!!!!!!

Its a clever idea, although some games now are going to use the whole blu ray disc, i heard that killzone 2 developers said they will fill almost the whole disc
