View Full Version : PS3Forums *New* Design 2: Feedback Requested
After a rather prolonged and arduous amount of deliberation and revisions we think the latest version of the forum is finally ready to go, but before we approve this version we'd like to hear what the forum goers think. So you can find the new design at the link at the end of this. Please let us know your views. If you have any suggestions on how to improve it we'd love to hear them.
For this design we have tried to make it feel more like a PS3 forum (notice the XMB liquid smoke and PS3 image in the header, as well as the X, square, triangle and circle next to the forum titles and new forum console icons). We've also tried to bring the forum back closer to PSU.com - by adding a PSU news feed, the PSU footer & width, and top level links.
Some other points to note are that we have added a Folding@Home link which will take you to the official PS3Forums Folding@Home thread (to help increase our participation rates ((we need to stay ahead of the official team! ;))) and also a new section dedicated to the community featuring the Post of the Week, Thread of the Week and Member of the Week.
Of final note is that the post design has been included on the homepage for mock up purposes only and obviously this will not appear on the main design, and neither will the 'Post reply' or 'New Thread' buttons. The colors used in the Who's Online section will also probably stay the same as they are now. And lastly, we will of course be allowing users to stick with the current Aria theme or VB default if they so wish.

I like the new look, and have found nothing wrong with it that you didn't explain in your post. I've been looking forward to the launch, and didn't realize how close it was even from your blog entry. I think it will take a while to get used to, but what won't? Any change would take a while to get used to, and I look forward to trying this new theme out when it's available.
But, I do have 1 question, and I know it was because of the mockup, but did you make up some of those users names, because I haven't heard of either of the mods, and I was just curious, lol.
I thought you had made up all of the names until I saw myself listed, and then I started seeing other familiars. :-)

I too like the new setup. The dark border on the left and right make it slightly easier on the eyes. Very snazzy look.

I'm glad that you decided to make it match PSU, Morpheus. There's a much nicer transition between the two sites now, and it doesn't look like a tacky gaming site.

1. I dislike having all the section icons the same colour and I think it would look better if they were all different colours.

2. In the "Who's Online" panel, some of the usergroup colours are mixed up.
i.e The SMC is light blue.
Is the SMC actually going to be light blue?:???:

And, I guess I do agree on tghe whole color thing, it does seem overwhelmingly blue.

I don't like it, I really like the current one now. It's more homely and inviting. The new one looks sterile and cold like a doctors office. Sorry, I just really like the one we have now.

I missed that part.
I like it. The current one is a bit too bland for my liking.
I'd like to see is an option to turn the back ground from light to dark. Some websites do this and its really nice for those long eye straining sessions on the PC.
Example: http://www.ffxionline.com/ In the bottom left is an option to make it dark.

I'm still not a fan of the blue. It needs to be deeper or something, in the forum bars I mean. That baby / sky blue just looks odd. Even if it was a really deep purple or something. I dunno, just any very deep colour would suit it more imo.

you should add a classifieds section on the board.
I love it especially the posts of the week,thread of the week and member of the week but the only thing I would to be changed is if the icons next to the forums were the colour of the actual console, not all the same colour

you guys should also break out some of the forums into more specific. sometimes i want to post something but there is no section for it so it just ends up in the wrong place or dont post it at all in fear that the nazi guards will ban me or give me one of those ghiey 'infractions'

I agree with roosters93. It would be nice to add some highlights and/or brighter colors to the section icons as well as the "buttons" above each section. Overall, I like it.
I always wondered why PS3forums looked nothing like PSU, I like that you've made an effort to make them co-exist now. (its sad that people don't know ps3forums is even related to psu)

I realize that I am brand new to this site but hey, everyones opinion counts right? I really like it compared to the current theme but I was wondering if users would have the option to make it the full width of the screen? I myself, and I'm sure many other people do as well, have a widescreen monitor set to a wide resolution which would end up with a lot of wasted space on the left and right sides of the page.
Looks much better than the first revision. This I could live with if you are open for slight feedback and changes once it goes live and we actually get to experience it.

It's good, I think you will get more traffic on PSU.com as well with all the new links around.

The logo has been left out on purpose as we are getting this done separately.

I really like the new design. The colors match PSU so much more and the stronger PS3 theme is welcomed.
The integration of PSU content and news updates is a really cool feature as well.
The only things that I think should be worked on are the width of the page and the extremely dark colors...If there was a mix of some lighter shades of blue in there along with a wider page to prevent it from feeling cramped, the page would be better. Other than that, this new version looks fantastic.
Looks good, but will it run faster and load quicker? This forum takes forever to load on every machine that I have ever viewed it on (slow and fast internet connections, good and hokey PCs)...that would be the most important improvement. If it werent for the fact that its the best site around for info and discussion, the load times alone would have turned me off a LONG TIME ago.

I would have to agree with this also. Allow it to go to 100% width while keeping the minimum size to 700 ot 800 pixels...

Better than desing #1, but I still think I need more BLACK! Black makes a forum look nice and sleek.

It looks all bunched together for some reason. IMO.
You probably have the same issue I do with a high resolution monitor being forced to display a forum set up as fixed width for the lowest resolution monitors (800 x 600 for example). Looks very bunched together.

Black theme will come shortly after this one :). We will give users the choice to choose between them but this new one will be the new forum default. We will also keep aria for a while for those that prefer the old theme.

We are always looking for new moderators. These are hand picked by the Admins and other Mods every few months.

Okay everyone - the official launch date for the new skin should be Tuesday. That's not definite but we are going to try our best to get it done for that date.

I like the look of it with one exception. When picking which forum you want to view. It's too busy, nothing makes "PS3 Discussion" or "PS3 Games" or "Wii Chat" pop out.
It either needs more margins, a color that stands out more, a larger font, less text near it or maybe the table column width increased even when the column doesn't need to be wider to fit the enclosed text.
When you are at this screen, what you are going to be doing 90% of the time is picking which forum to view. As a UI design, you want to have the most obvious tasks be the most prominent ones. Just my $0.02. Really like the new design!
To make the icons POP more, what about getting colored icons? May take a few hours to manually color them unless you can find icons colored already. I think it would fit great since its black(ps) and white(360/wii) only.

It's basically done bar a few minor tweaks (I'm using it now), but the coder has been away for about a week now, so I'm just waiting on him to finish the last few changes before we go live.

Looks good the new design, will take abit to get used to. looks more in line with psu.com now
