View Full Version : Ps3 Blu-ray in 720p?!
ive been hearing strange things about how blu ray movies work with a 720p tv.
i was hoping some of you could tell me how it is.:confused:

Blu-rays will play fine on any tv...you can watch a blu-ray on a standard definition tv, it just won't be displayed to its full advantage (not even close). If you watch a blu-ray on a 720p tv, you'll only see the blu-ray in 720p...if you watch it on a 1080p tv, then you'll see it displayed in its full glory...which is truly spectacular!

There used to be an issue where Blu-Ray movies would only display at either 1080p/1080i or 480p - but not at 720p - which meant that if your TV only displayed 720p and 480i/p, it would display at 480p. This has since been fixed though, so as long as you download the latest firmware updates, you'll be good to go on basically any HDTV.

720p is great. I could go 1080i, but because of the interlacing crap... i choose progressive scan.

I have a 1080i tv and i was wondering if i play blurays on my ps3 (resolution also set to 1080i) will it have to downscale it to 720p?

Which update fixed the 720p blu-ray issue? I didn't hear about anything blu-ray related when the updates were released

I've watched Blu-Ray movies on my HDTV (1080i.720p), and to be honest, it doesn't look that much different to me, but of course, my DVD player has options for HD, I don't know, is that I'm not seeing a difference?

It was in release 1.70 IIRC.
I think any 720 HDTV worth it's salt will down sample the 1080x signal anyway (it may even be part of the HDTV spec).

720p for fast action stuff, 1080i for the rest.
not a rule but it's been said by many others.
