:D well this is my first post so yea...

I got a gateway 22" monitor and couldnt get it to out put to 1080p, just 720p and 1080i, but all of a sudden last night I decided to see if 1080p would work (before it would go to a black screen) and it did... :D sweet... Lol just letting you all know :p

22" doesnt matter

It is possible to get PC monitors with 1080p. The smaller the screen the closer you need to get so the more detail you can see so 1080p! There are quite a few monitors that can do it, it all depends on viewing distance. He still is getting 1080p like some forum members just on a smaller screen. Don't knock it till you tried it under the right conditions

Yes, you will not see any differences between 1080p and 720p with a 22" monitor. The difference is only noticeable at 40" screens and up.

I read how other people say that the screen size doesn't matter, but rather the distance you view it. However, I still do agree that 22" is a bit small when talking about 1080p but hey congrats on just being able to say you got 1080p!

Exactly which is why it is only monitors and not fully fledged TV's that have 1080p at such a small size. You wont be that close to the TV

10-04-2007, 00:58
it depends on how good your vision is - 1080p is 2 million pixels of information (approx).

The eye at its focal point can discern 88 million pixels of information. Outside the narrow focal point however and that resolution drops dramatically (to around 1 - 2 million pixels).

Don't listen to them, you will see a difference if it is truly outputting 1080p, the only question is, is your monitor 1920 x 1200 with 1:1 pixel mapping, or is it a different res and/or doesn't have pixel mapping..? If it has both of the above mentioned, then it is truly outputting it @ 1080p so congrats! If not, it is fooling either your eyes or your brain, but it is certainly not outputting @ 1080p. :-( Seating distance, how far away are you? It makes the difference. :-)

How close are you away from your monitor right now? I'm about 20-24". Yes it does help to be closer with a smaller screen but you can certainly tell the difference, it's not like you watch a 22" screen from across the room anyhow no matter what the resolution is.

100% incorrect. Totally wrong.

Yes, you will not see any differences between 1080p and 720p with a 22" monitor. The difference is only noticeable at 40" screens and up.

Again, 100% incorrect. This is a total false comment.

Resolution goes hand in hand with seating distance and screen size. If you sit at the right distance from a 22" monitor that is a true 1080p screen, then you will see the difference. Very easily.

Same thing goes for large TVs, If I were to sit 11-14ft from my 60" it would look more like 720p to my eyes and brain than anything else. But If I sit at the proper distance for my screen size and resolution then it would look like it should - 1080p.

The same goes for smaller screens, sit close enough - 1080p. Sit too far and its worthless.

By telling people you need 40"+ you are lying, you are giving them incorrect information - its not helping people understand the truth. And it sounds like you have nothing to base this off except your own opinion, but I'm here to say that what I am saying is 100% fact.

couldn't agree more to that :)

as for the OP, I've yet to see a 22" panel that has a res. of 1920x1200
the only thing I could think of is that your monitor can accept 1080p and display it at lower res.(like some other TV's do with 1080p signals)

Yes, while I don't personally think the people posting such information are dumb...... I think that they are doing a disservice to other people by posting information that is really inaccurate. The science is behind this 100%, otherwise I wouldn't post anything. It does frustrate me to hear that people still think and post that anything under 40" is not what "1080p is for" and that "1080p is for 40+ inches"... when it is totally untrue.

You could have a 100" HDTV and if you sat at the wrong distance (too close or too far away) your not going to get 1080p... you're going to get less than that. Screen size has almost nothing to do with it. Its distance TO your screen size + resolution. End of story.

My friend have a 24inch dell.. he set at 2-3 feet since it's his computer monitor. The difference between Forza 2 and GTHD demo (720p upscaled to 1080p vs 1080p) is really easy too see even at his sitting distance..

I tend to disagree, I do notice the difference with my Sharp Aquos 32" 1080P LCD. 1080P is more sharper than 720P.

For a 22" 1080p monitor to see 1080p in its full resolution you need to sit between 2.5 and 3.5ft around. For your best bet is the 3.0ft mark.

The SMPTE and the THX are more for bigger screens really since we are talking about angles, but still... around 3ft or so and your fine.

That monitor is not 1080 resolution. It's 1680 x 1050. 1080 is 1920 x 1080. So it is just scaling the image.

That is complete and utter BS.
Even on my old 19" CRT, playing Far Cry.. at 1280x1024 resolution, the pixels were quite noticeable, every texture seems 'bigger' to the eye, appearing in clumps. But if you play it on 1920x1200, suddenly the world is refined, even if you squint you cannot define any pixels sticking out on the screen. The birds flying around in the air no longer look like self-animating creative origami, they actually fly and look like birds, with grace. There's a huge difference, even on a small screen. Your eyes are so much closer to the screen, you can't help but notice the differences.

I think that no matter how big your monitor / tv is, the higher resolution it is, the better.

Afaik, 1080p on a 22" is impossible. How can you display a resolution greater than the maximum capability of the monitor ?

As has been said, your monitors maximum vertical resolution is 1050. Not to mention that 1080p displays 1920 width, which is far far greater than your monitor is able to handle. So if you're running at 1080p, then your image is being squashed. Imo, this effect would make the image look worse than running at proper 720p. In fact, the image you're getting should look so distorted that it isn't even worth it. Or, your ps3 is automatically forcing 720p when you select 1080p, which would be the smart thing to assume.

FAIL There are no 22 inch 1080p lcd monitors. Your monitor probably has a resolution of 1600 X 1200, it just downscales 1080p to that resolution.
