Copying the update file to the root directory of the usb flash drive through pc and then using the flash drive on one of the usb ports on the ps3 to update the firmware...if it is possible that way with the ps3.(I update my tv's firmware this way)
Anyone has tried this way with ps3?Or is it necessary to connect the ps3 to internet to update the fw?

That's the only way I update mine. PSN has slow speeds, but in order for it to work you have to create a folder named "PS3" and under that another folder "UPDATE" and in that folder put the update file...

where do you actually download the update file?

Yeah. I find it way more convenient to download updates this way. While I'm downloading on my computer, I can still play games or watch movies w/ the ps3. It's also alot quicker.

where do you actually download the update file?

You download the update file onto your desktop computer's harddrive. Then transfer it to the flash drive with the correct directory structure, insert it into the PS3 USB port, and do the update.

I agree that it's way better to update this way, but it usually takes about 24 hours for Sony to post the update on their website for downloading.
